The Internet and the New Evangelization

Too many people today experience life as void of purpose. Many find themselves walking aimlessly and without meaning. Sadly, many view life as simply something to be endured rather than savored. Pope Benedict would often reflect upon the important role that the Church has in changing such hearts. The Holy Father had said that “we must find meaning, if we are to live at all.” Pope Francis too has reinforced this mission of the Church when he reminded us “to make sure that when one meets you, he or she leaves knowing that his or her life has meaning to you!” And the truest way that we can assist others in finding meaning in this world is to introduce that person to Jesus Christ. And, for us to accomplish this mission, we have to recognize the internet/social communication as one of the “peripheries” of which Pope Francis speaks, those fringes that we must enter into in order to invite others to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Many years ago, months after I had purchased my new iPhone, it rang during an

important meeting being run by a bishop. Frustrated, he turned to me and said, “please turn your phone off!” And like a dutiful priest, I immediately went to do so, when I realized, I had no idea how to turn it off! After all, why would anyone ever turn off the iPhone? I share this story merely to highlight that technology and the internet are no longer merely instruments, they are cultures, cultures that as a church called to the mission of the new evangelization, we must confront and engage in. Yet, we cannot know how to bring Christ to each person if we do not understand a culture formed by smart phone devices and the internet. Just a few specifics: the language proper to them has already changed the very structure of language. In fact, sometimes it is best not to exceed 140 characters. Language is now more concise and immediate. Consequently, with language, behaviors have changed. We spend hours in front of the computer rarely communicating face to face. And there are even new pathologies in this internet culture that psychologists are trying to analyze and cure. Thus, not only are the devices continually changing, but so are the very lives of those who use them. Yet, as lives are changing drastically with each new technological invention, ironically, we become ever more dependent upon the very way in which the Lord brought people to himself and to his message. To quote Pope Benedict: “What we need in this time of history are people, who, through a faith which is enlightened and lived out in practice, make God credible in the world… Only through people who are touched by God. Can God return to humanity.” God needs each one of us to help Him return to the hearts of all, especially those shaped by the digital culture!
