How is it that we can live the great challenge of St. James and demonstrate our faith by our works? By loving as God loves. And we can only begin to live up to this demand by recognizing that God has first loved us and, thus, has demonstrated the answer to us. In fact, God does not want anything from us that He has not first given us. Thus, to love, as it is the definition of what it means to be a Christian, demands that we try to live as God lives. And how is it that God lives? God lives to love us. And He loves us not because He needs us. He loves us not because we are always exceptionally good. He loves us not because we are always virtuous or ever patient. In the end, He loves us not because we are always good, but He loves us because He is the eternal true goodness. He does not portion out his love on a scale proportional to our merit or usefulness. It is of God’s very nature of goodness to love and not in some abstract way, but in a concrete and personal way. But this my friends should not make us sit back and breathe a sigh of relief saying to ourselves, “Well since that is the case, why worry about being good, being virtuous, living lives of hope, patience and empathy.” And most importantly, if God is going to love us anyway, “Why bother experiencing the incredible pain that goes along with loving unconditionally?” To live as God lives is to love in such a way that we stop making ourselves the center of the universe with everyone else revolving around us. It means loving those who do not please us and who have nothing to offer us in return. It means that we are good to someone simply because they are in need of kindness. And these opportunities to love are the real opportunities of grace in our lives.

SAINT CORNELIUS Feast Day: September 16.

Appearance: Wear papal robes. Attributes: Hunting horn, papal tiara.

Biographical notes: Pope from 251 to 253, he died a martyr during the persecutions under Emperor Gallus. Patronage: Protector of bovines. The actual life of Saint Cornelius, third-century pope and martyr, has had nothing to do with his image in art or with the specific attribute linked with him. Saint Cornelius is most often depicted with a hunting horn,

chosen for him because of his name, which is also why he is the patron lowing the linear chronology of art history, Saint Cornelius has been outfitted with the clothing and attributes of a pope-elegant vestments, the three-tiered tiara, papal headdresses-according to the period of the artist making the depiction. Sometimes he is shown accompanied by Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, who defended him and supported his legitimacy during a difficult pontificate that included internal church problems, such as the admission of those who had abjured their faith during persecutions.
