All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life,

and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him.

He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation

nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son,

full of grace and truth. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

In what ways does Jesus’ coming at Christmas help us appreciate our need to put our lives in God’s hands? Christmas is a time when we celebrate Christ’s coming into the world.

Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Guests of St. Joseph Cathedral: Merry Christmas! This common greeting has uncommon significance as we gather in faith today. Our greeting transcends warm wishes for the holiday, hope for a New Year, or cordial friendship. As we welcome each other with this procla-mation, literally joyous day of Christ, we are sharing a fundamental acclamation that God was born into the human family. We celebrate the event of Jesus’ birth to Mary and Jo-seph in a humble stable. We hear again the announce-ment of his birth to shepherds in the hills surrounding Bethlehem. And once more the message of “peace on earth, good will to humankind” is declared. That declaration of peace and good will seems strange in our contemporary context. We know all too well the scars of violence, hatred, and war. We remain sensitive to the divisions that too often separate peoples and na-tions. But we hear this declaration in faith and resolute-ly believe that the birth of Jesus redirected human histo-ry toward the Kingdom of God. God becoming one of us changed the human race forever. Consequently our Christmas hymns and celebrations echo that Good News and reasserts within our world that God continues to work through the Spirit inviting us always into His peace, His good will, His plan for salva-tion. I join the Cathedral Community in this proclamation of faith – Merry Christmas. I wish you the warmest of hol-idays and look forward with you to the year to come. Warmly, Rev. Joseph M. Estimados Feligreses, Amigos, e Invitados de la Catedral de San José: ¡Feliz Navidad! Este saludo común deja de ser común mientras que nos reunimos en la fe hoy día. Nuestro saludo trasciende el caluroso deseo para las fiestas, la esperanza para el Año Nuevo o la amistad cordial. Al compartir la bienvenida con esta proclamación, literalmente, feliz día de Cristo, compartimos una aclamación fundamental de que Dios nació a la familia humana.

Celebramos el evento del nacimiento de Jesús a María y José en un humilde establo. Escuchamos de nuevo el anuncio de su nacimiento a los pastores en los campos alrededor de Belén. Y de nuevo el mensaje de “paz en la tierra a todas las personas de buena voluntad.”

Esa declaración de paz y buena voluntad pareciera ex-traña en nuestro contexto contemporáneo. Conocemos sin duda las cicatrices de la violencia, del odio y de la guerra. Cathedral Ministries and Programs

Reconciliation

Opportunities for reconciliation are an integral aspect of parish life and minis-try. Reconciliation is too often under-stood simply as the Sacrament of Pen-ance. While the Sacrament of Penance is a privileged experience of for-giveness, reconciliation in parish life is far more expansive and encompassing.

Marriage Annulments The pastoral staff is always available to work in all areas of reconciliation. Outreach to persons who are seeking forgiveness and counsel is a priority for us. We are open to work with indi-viduals who are divorced and remar-ried and desire to explore reconciling their marriage within the Church. Please feel free to contact Fr. Benedict, Fr. Syjueco or Fr. Rojas if we can be of any assistance to you.

The Sacrament of Marriage The Cathedral Basilica is a stunning and hospitable setting for the celebra-tion of the Sacrament of Marriage. Over the last 20 years, we have cele-brated more than 2000 weddings at the Cathedral, respecting both cultural tra-ditions and in the context of our Cath-olic faith. Pastoral Care of the Sick We have a dedicated team of volunteer ministers who take Holy Communion to those members of our parish com-munity who are be homebound and unable to come to church. We wel-come a call to our office so that we can address this particular need.

Office of Social Ministry Social Ministry is a vital element of parish life. It is woven into the liturgy, reflected in prayer, and our religious programs. Social Ministry provides opportunities to have the parish be-come involved through direct service and advocacy. Our Social Ministry Office provides a place where the homeless can receive mail, referrals to shelter, employment, legal help, and housing. We advocate for labor rights, Social Security benefits and work

closely with our immigrant population and those who have mental illness. We participate with the City of San Jose’s Housing Department on issues regard-ing homelessness. We are partners with the Gardner Family Healthcare project to the homeless and have a free healthcare clinic on our site. Our Bridges of Hope ministry partners with Catholic Charities, First Christian Church and Recovery Café. Alcohol-ics Anonymous meets in our hall, serv-ing an urban neighborhood in solidari-ty with the business community and those who are homeless dedicated to maintaining sobriety. We hold three main events for the community: (1) Season of Hope Performance Series during the 12 Days Before Christmas (2) the Feast of St. Joseph, and (3) our annual Health Fair. Cathedral Gift Shop The Cathedral Gift Shop is a part of our parish ministry. We serve our pa-rishioners and downtown community, visitors to our city, other parishes and individuals throughout our valley. We sell religious articles from crucifixes to rosaries, Baptism gifts to holy cards and inspirational items from angels to greeting cards, necklaces and brace-lets, Coffee Mugs to Candles. We have Books and Bibles for both chil-dren and adults in Spanish and Eng-lish. Come visit us! We would love to see you. We are open every day except Mondays and Holidays.

Cathedral Guided Tours Nestled in the heart of downtown San Jose, our Cathedral represents over 200 years of service and faith in the community. If you would like to learn about the Cathedral Basilica’s legacy, architecture and sacred treasures, tours can be pre-arranged for your organiza-tion, club or school. Music Ministry Here at the Cathedral we have 4 choirs and an ensemble of instrumentalists. The English Cathedral choir sings at

our 11:30 am Sunday Mass. There are 2 Spanish choirs that sing at our 10am and 1:00 pm masses. Our bilingual children’s choir sings at both the Span-ish and English liturgies.

Our Saturday 4:30 English mass is led by a cantor as is the Sunday 8:30 am English Mass. All are welcome to join. Rehearsals are Wednesday even-ing at 7:00 and Thursday evenings at 6:30. The children rehearse Thursdays at 4:00 in the afternoon. Liturgical Ministry

The Cathedral provides opportunities for parishioners to have a more active participation in the liturgy by way of various liturgical ministries. Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Com-munion, Servers, Ushers or Sextons and Ministers of Church Environment are those who assist in liturgies by per-forming specific functions. Lectors are readers and bearers of God's Word who reverently proclaim the word of God in the liturgical assembly. Ex-traordinary Ministers of Holy Com-munion assist in the distribution of the sacred Body and Blood of Christ. Servers assist the celebrant in the altar so he can focus his attention on lead-ing the liturgy. Ushers are ministers of hospitality who provide warm wel-come to members of community and visitors giving a strong witness to the joy of being a Christian. Sextons are trained to respond to emergency situa-tions. The ministers of church environ-ment provide the appropriate environ-ment in the church that reflect the litur-gical seasons of the Church in order to better draw the community into the spirit of the sacred mystery being cele-brated. All these ministers get regular training and formation not only to ena-ble them to perform more effectively in their respective ministries but also to grow in their ministries and their relationship with God. To become a liturgical minister, a person needs to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church, in good standing with the Church, physically able to serve and willing to grow in faith and skill. First Holy Communion

Our parish prepares baptized children of age 7 and up who are in 2nd through 9th grades for the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation (Confession) and the Sacra-ment of Eucharist.

UNBAPTIZED CHILDREN ages 7 and up are also prepared to be fully received into Catholicism with Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT The success of a sacramental program depends upon parental involvement. There are parent meetings as well as the need to work closely with the child in the home, reinforcing and complet-ing class lessons. There are basic pray-ers to learn using prayer sheets provid-ed by the parish. Parents are called to be role-models of Catholic faith for their children which includes attending Sunday Mass.

LANGUAGE Classes are conducted in English with a bilingual English/Spanish textbook. Classes in Spanish are offered for those children not yet skilled in Eng-lish.

REQUIREMENTS Children must be 7 years of age or old-er. A certificate of the child’s baptism – if applicable – must be presented and the class material fee must be paid in full. The child may not have more than 3 absences. The teacher provides final approval of the child’s readiness and understanding. Contact the parish of-fice 408-283-8100 ext. 2200.

Teen Confirmation

The High School Confirmation Pro-gram in our parish provides the oppor-tunity for our community to help foster the faith life of our youth. Team teaching and small group discussions are a part of the process.

The program is open to teenagers ages 15-18 in 10th through 12th grade. They gather Sunday mornings for 10 months. Themes include Scripture, Tradition, Mary, Prayer, Sacraments and Symbols, Christian Morality, litur-gical seasons, Sin and Reconciliation, God, Jesus and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Homework and community service are assigned. The involvement of parents and sponsors is encouraged for certain meetings, events and Sunday Mass. 3 retreats are planned for the students.

A Catholic sponsor is required who is at least 16 years old, has received Bap-tism and Confirmation, who regularly receives the Eucharist and is a good model of Catholic life. Contact the parish office 408-283-8100 ext. 2200.

Adult Christian Initiation

Any adult of 19 years and older who desires Baptism, Eucharist and/or Con-firmation may enroll. The process in-volves weekly Catechetical sessions and Liturgical Celebrations.

A team teaching approach involves volunteer catechists, sponsors, priests and a coordinator. We offer scripture reflection and discussion on various aspects of the Catholic faith and prac-tices as well as 2 retreat days.

Liturgical celebrations include Rite of Welcome, Rite of Election, Scrutinies and the Celebration of Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.

La Reconciliación

Las oportunidades para la reconcilia-ción forman una parte íntegra de la vida parroquial y el ministerio. En ve-ces solo se conoce como el sacramento de la penitencia Mientras que sea una experiencia privilegiada del perdón, la reconciliación en una parroquia abarca es mucho más expansiva y comprensi-va.

La Anulación del Matrimonio El equipo pastoral está siempre dis-puesto a entrar en cada área de la re-conciliación. Aquellas personas que buscan el perdón y el consejo son nuestra prioridad. Buscamos a tratar los que estén divorciados y casadas de nuevo para explorar la reconciliación de su matrimonio en la Iglesia. Puede hablar con el P. Hugo.

El Sacramento del Matrimonio En el bello y hospitalario ambiente de la Catedral hemos celebrado más de 2000 bodas durante los últimos 20 años. Ha-cemos lo posible por respectar las tra-diciones culturales de las parejas pero en el contexto de nuestra fe Católica. Se le ofrecerá una alta calidad de coor-dinación. El Cuidado Pastoral de los Enfermos

Tenemos un equipo de ministros vo-luntarios leales que llevan la Sagrada Comunión a aquellos feligreses que por cuestión de su salud, no pueden salir a misa. Invitamos una llamada a nuestra oficina parroquial para poder dirigirnos la necesidad.

La Oficina del Ministerio social El Ministerio Social es un elemento vital de la vida parroquial. Está inte-grado con la liturgia, reflejado en la oración y en nuestros programas reli-giosos. Ofrece la oportunidad para que la parroquia participe en el servi-cio directo y ofrezca asesoría. Nuestra Oficina del Ministerio Social es un lugar donde los carentes pueden recibir correspondencia e información para buscar hospedaje, empleo, asesoría legal y vivienda. Abogamos por los derechos del trabajador, los beneficios del Seguro Social y trabajar de cerca con la población inmigrada. En la Catedral contamos con 4 coros y un equipo de instrumentalistas. El coro de inglés canta en la misa de las 11:30. Hay 2 coros en español que cantan en las misas de las 10:00 y 1:00. Nuestro coro bilingüe juvenil canta en las misas de inglés y español. La misa de 4:30 en sábado es dirigida por un cantor tanto como es la misa de 8:30am en domingo. Todos bienvenidos a ser miembros del coro. Los ensayos en inglés son los miércoles a las 7:00pm y en español los jueves a las 6:30pm. Los niños ensayan los jueves a las 4:00pm. El Ministerio Litúrgico En la Catedral hay oportunidad para los feligreses realizar una participación más active en la liturgia mediante los varios ministerios litúrgicos. El lector aporta la palabra de Dios y la proclama reverentemente a la asamblea litúrgica Los ministros extraordinarios de la Sa-grada Comunión distribuyen el sagra-do Cuerpo y la Sagrada Sangre de Cristo. Los monaguillos ayudan al sa-cerdote en el altar para que él pueda enfocar su atención en la conducción de la liturgia. Los ministros de la hos-pitalidad dan una calorosa bienvenida a la comunidad y a los visitantes, dando

un fuerte testimonio a la alegría de ser cristiano. Hay otros ministros de hos-pitalidad entrenados a responder a cualquier urgencia sucediendo en la misa. Los ministros de ambientación tienen la responsabilidad de reflejar las estaciones litúrgicas de la Iglesia para que la comunidad entre al espíritu de del sagrado misterio que se está cele-brando. Todos los ministros reciben entrenamiento y formación, para reali-zar sus respectivos ministerios efecti-vamente y crecer en su relación con Dios. La persona tiene que estar plena-mente iniciada a la Iglesia Católica, en buen estado eclesiástico con la Iglesia, físicamente capacitada para servir y dispuesta a profundizar en su fe y su ministerio. La Educación Religiosa

Primera Comunión Nuestra parroquia prepara a los niños bautizados de la edad de 7 y en adelan-te que están en los grados 2 al 9 para los sacramentos de la Reconciliación (la Confesión) y la Eucaristía. Los Niños No Bautizados de 7 años y en adelante serán prepara-dos para ser plenamente recibos al Ca-tolicismo con el Bautismo, la Confir-mación y la Eucaristía. EL PAPEL DE LOS PAPÁS El éxito de un programa sacramental depende de la aportación de los papas. Asistirán a reuniones y tendrán que trabajar de cerca con el niño, ayudán-dole con su sus tareas y las lecciones . Hay oraciones que aprender con ayuda de unas guías que recibirán de la parro-quia. Los papas deben de ser ejemplos del Catolicismo para sus hijos, lo cual incluye la asistencia a la misa. EL LENGUAJE Las clases son conducidas en inglés con un cuaderno bilingüe. Las clases en español son solamente para aquellos niños que aún no dominan el inglés.

LOS REQUISITOS

El niño debe de tener al menos sus 7 años. Hay que presentar su acta del bautismo – si es aplicable – pagar la cuota de inscripción por completo. El niño no debe de faltar más de 3 veces.

La Confirmación Da la oportunidad a nuestra parroquia de participar en la profundización de la fe de nuestros jóvenes que están en la High School. Hay equipo de maestros y se promueve el diálogo y la explora-ción de las ideas de los jóvenes. Es para los jóvenes entre 15 a 18 años y en los grados 10 al 12. Se reúnen en domingo por 10 meses. Los temas in-cluyen las Escrituras, la Tradición, Ma-ría, la Oración, los Sacramentos y Sím-bolos, la Moral Cristiana, las estacio-nes litúrgicas, la Reconciliación, Dios, Jesús y los Dones del Espíritu Santo.

Hay tarea y servicio comunitario. Se pide la participación de los papás y padrinos para algunas reuniones, cier-tos eventos y la asistencia a misa. Hay 3 días de reflexión programadas.

Se requiere un padrino Católico que tiene al menos 16 años, ha recibido su Bautismo y Confirmación, que comul-ga regularmente y es buen ejemplo del Catolicismo. Llame a la oficina parro-quial al 408-283-8100, ext. 2200.

La Iniciación Cristiana Un adulto de 19 años que desea el Bau-tismo, la Eucaristía y Confirmación podrá matricular. Hay reuniones sema-nales y celebraciones litúrgicas.

Se trata de un equipo formado por los catequistas voluntarios, padrinos, sa-cerdotes, y un coordinador. Ofrecemos reflexión sobre las escrituras y dialogo sobre varios aspectos de la fe Católica y su práctica. Hay 2 retiros.

Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restorative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons. This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tues-day of each month at the Women’s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church) 49 North 4th Street, San Jose 95112.

The purpose of this group is to pro-vide support, encouragement, and prayer during this difficult time.

Los pacientes pudieran sentirse indispuestos para manejar, no tener un vehículo o dinero para la gasolina o pagar otro servicio de transporte. The American Cancer Society offers many free services to help people with cancer and their fami-lies overcome obstacles in their personal cancer fight so they can focus on getting well. One challenge involves transportation to and from much-needed cancer treatments. Pa-tients may be to ill to drive them-selves, may not have a car or someone to drive or may not be able to afford gas or other trans-portation.
