Annual Diocesan Appeal 2018

“Sharing the Joy of the Gospel, Together in Christ” A collaboration in which every parish contributes toward the support of minis-tries and services rendered by our Diocese of San Jose. The Cathedral goal this year is $135,500. Each household taking part in the campaign helps the Cathedral par-ish reach its goal toward funding educa-tion, training and service to the faithful of our Diocese. If you are on our mailing list, you will receive the details directly. Information will also be available in church. If we achieve 100% participa-tion, we will not only match but surpass last year’s success!

To our online donors...

We Share Program Alert It has come to our attention that the import process from Parish Pay to We Share is problematic. Please review your statements and make sure that your donations that you intend for us have been deducted from your accounts. It appears that these problems start-ed in the month of September. I contacted We Share for someone and was told that the bank hasn’t been honoring their attempts to make deductions. The deductions appear as LPI not We Share. If you would like to con-tact your bank and let them know these de-ductions should be allowed that might resolve the problem. If you would like to contact We Share, I spoke to Courtney Holland and her telephone number is 800/950-9952 ext 2463. Thank you, Tanis Zuccaro

S aint of the Week Saint Gregory of Nazianzus (c. 325 – c. 390)

After his baptism at 30, Gregory gladly accepted his friend Basil’s invitation to join him in a newly founded monas-tery. The solitude was broken when Gregory’s father, a bishop, needed help in his diocese and estate. It seems that Gregory was ordained a priest practically by force, and only reluctantly accepted the responsibility. He skillfully avoided a schism that threatened when his own father made compromises with Arianism. At 41, Gregory was chosen to be an assistant bishop of Caesarea and at once came into conflict with Valens, the emperor, who sup- ported the Arians. An unfortunate by-product of the battle was the cooling of the friendship of two saints. Basil, his archbishop, sent him to a miserable and unhealthy town on the bor- der of unjustly created divisions in his diocese. Basil reproached Gregory for not going to his see. When protection for Arianism ended with the death of Valens, Gregory was called to re- build the faith in the great see of Constantino- ple, which had been under Arian teachers for three decades. Retiring and sensitive, he dreaded being drawn into the whirlpool of corruption and violence. He first stayed at a friend’s home, which became the only or-thodox church in the city. In such surroundings, he began giving the great sermons on the Trinity for which he is fa-mous. In time, Gregory did rebuild the faith in the city, but at the cost of great suffering, slander, insults, and even per-sonal violence. An interloper even tried to take over his bishopric. His last days were spent in solitude and austerity. He wrote religious poetry, some of it autobiographical, of great depth and beauty. He was acclaimed simply as “the Theo-logian.”

S

Although the liturgical season of Or-dinary Time begins this week, to-day’s reading continues with the cel-ebration of the Baptism of the Lord, which concludes the Christmas sea-son. Today, we hear John the Bap-tist's testimony about Jesus and his

identification of Jesus as the Lamb of God. Having been baptized by John, Jesus begins to gather follow-ers. The first followers sought out Jesus because of the testimony and witness of John the Baptist. We are familiar with the title that John the Baptist uses for Jesus—the Lamb of God. We hear it weekly at the fraction rite during Mass. For those who heard John the Baptist, however, this title recalled key themes from the Old Testament. It alludes to the paschal lamb offered as a sacrifice when God freed the Isra-elites from slavery in Egypt, the event that is com-memorated by the Jewish Passover celebration. The designation also recalls the prophet Isaiah’s descrip-tion of the suffering servant of Israel. In using this name for Jesus, John the Baptist predicts Jesus’ pas-sion and death and the new interpretation of Passover that will begin with Jesus’ Last Supper. Jesus’ first two followers, Andrew and another man, were followers of John the Baptist. The details of their time with Jesus are not specified but Andrew and the other follower came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Andrew then brings his brother, Simon, to Jesus. Immediately, Jesus gave Simon a new name, calling him Peter, which means “rock” in Greek. The renaming of Simon to Peter is reported in all four of the Gospels. Jesus asks Andrew and the other disciple, “What are you looking for?” This is a telling question, and one that we might often ask of ourselves. John the Baptist testified to Jesus’ identi-ty, the Lamb of God, using the framework of the Old Testament. Andrew, Simon, and the other first disci-ples were looking for the Messiah, whom they also came to know as the Son of God. What do we look for and what do we find in Jesus? Loyola Press
