CATEGORY 71 STATUS REPORT OF NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE’S HABITAT CONSERVATION FEE PROGRAM RECEIPTS, PROGRAM EXPENDITURES AND PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN This report is submitted to the 75 th session of the Nevada State Legislature pursuant to NRS 501.331. A. PROJECT DETAILS FY 07 Wildfire Habitat Rehabilitation

The purpose of this project is

the rehabilitation of wildlife habitat that has been destroyed by wildfire. This was done through joint efforts with the land management agencies, private land owners and the Department of Wildlife by applying

seed to important wildlife habitat areas. In some cases the Department supplied the seed while the land management agencies did the application work. The total expenditures for this project were $252,550 of this was $203,387 was expended for seed, $41,715 for equipment repair and rental fees, $1,496 for equipment purchases. Steptoe Wildlife Management Area Range and Field Rehab This project was focused on the rehabilitation of the Steptoe WMA range and

fields that had been degraded by the infestation of noxious weeds and loss of wildlife habitat. The rehab process was started by spraying for noxious weeds and then reseeding the treated area. A total of 486 acres were treated for a total cost of $30,404 of this amount $15,540 was used for contractor payments, $12,676 for seed and $2,189 was expended for supplies. The vendors are identified in the addendum.

Wildfire Rehabilitation Head Start This project

focused on the rehabilitation of wildlife habitat around small capacity water developments that had been destroyed by wildfire. It was designed to provide cover and forage a little faster than by reseeding by the planting of live plants. A total of eight sites were planted with approximately 95 plants per site. A total of $2,737 was expended for this project with $2,579 spent for plants $36 for supplies and $122 for per diem.

FY 08 Wildfire Habitat Rehabilitation

The purpose of this project is the rehabilitation of wildlife habitat that has been destroyed by wildfire. This was done through joint efforts with the land management agencies, private land owners and the Department of Wildlife by applying seed to important wildlife habitat areas. In some cases the Department supplied the seed while the land management agencies did the application work. This project encompasses the area 6 restoration, antelope range restoration, Murphy fire reseeding coming to a total of $350,381 with $312,155 spent for seed, $34,837

expended on contracts for discing, drilling and aerial application and $3,389 expended on rental fees, equipment repairs and supplies. See vendors in the addendum.

Jiggs Reservoir Ditch Maintenance

This project was a joint venture with the landowner and NDOW to improve the water delivery to Jiggs Reservoir a popular fishing location for people in Elko County. The project involved the removal of the willows along the main water delivery ditch to enhance flows to the reservoir. The total cost of this project was $3,990 which included rental of machinery and labor. The vendors are identified in the addendum.

Kirch Wildlife Management Area Food Plot Restoration

This project involves the maintenance of

established food plots for upland game birds at Kirch Wildlife Management Area. This is done through the application of fertilizer and reseeding the establish food plots with wildlife bird seed mix. During FY08 50 acres were reseeded on the Management Area. Total expenditure for this project was $3450 for the seed mixture. See addendum for vendor list.

Steptoe Wildlife Management Area Range and Field Rehab This project was focused on the rehabilitation of the Steptoe WMA range and

fields that had been degraded by the infestation of noxious weeds and loss of wildlife habitat. The rehab process was started by spraying for noxious weeds and then reseeding the treated area. Those areas that weren’t successful were reseeded with a total cost of $2,932.

Eagle Valley Reservoir Aeration

This project will replace the existing aeration system in Eagle Valley Reservoir. Because of the conformation and flow characteristics in Eagle Valley Reservoir supplemental aeration is required during the summer period to maintain water quality and prevent formation of areas of severe oxygen deficit impacting the recreational sport fishery. Total spent for this project was $1166 for an air compressor. See vendors in the addendum.

E. PROJECT BENEFITS

Projects completed were designed to protect, enhance or rehabilitate wildlife habitat and their associated wildlife values. The public benefited from these projects by providing game species enhanced habitat to expand into viable populations and thereby giving the public greater opportunity to view and hunt.
