Basic story

• Follow Holden Caulfield as he makes his way through the depths of 50s New York searching desperately for some sense of his identity as his physical and mental health slowly deteriorate. Freshly expelled from a typically preppy boarding school, restless adolescent Caulfield decides to find his way home of his own accord meeting many figures from both his past and present along the way. James Mangold’s innovative take on the late great JD Salinger’s cult classic has all the style and panache of the original text. This moving coming-of-age tale has plenty of ups and downs in store as Caulfield struggles to come to terms with a family bereavement.

Genre and audience

• Semi-biographical drama, which is why we have some of the team from walk the line working on it. (Nowhere boy etc)

• Audience should include Salinger fans everywhere as well as a broader social group including teenagers and young adults.

Location

• Original fifties new york so far? As well as the boarding school.

• Elise: basically I was thinking it might be better to do it in the original new york setting cus otherwise none of the landmarks will stay the same, we can still do it with the modern cast and soundtrack I don’t know really, let me know what you think xxx
