Eye Care In Children at Rushabh Eye Hospital

Page 4: Cataract,Lasik,Retina,Glaucoma Surgeries at Rushabh Eye Hospital and Laser Center

• Children should have a good posture while studying and read in adequate light. • Children should watch TV at a distance of atleast 6 feet or more (excessive TV watching or playing games on computer will lead to eye strain but will not spoil eye sight or induce spectacle number).• A good sleep of atleast 8 hours is a must for every child. •Children should take a well balanced diet, rich in natural vitamin like carrot, spinach, papaya, milk etc. • However, keep in mind no foods/ vitamins can revert back any refractive error (glass number). • To avoid any eye injury keep pointed objects, chemicals, cosmetics away from children . • Children should not rub or touch their eyes often as this could introduce infection. • No eye drop should be instilled in eyes without consulting the eye specialist.

Eye Saving Tips For Computer Users at Rushabh Eye Hospital

Page 6: Cataract,Lasik,Retina,Glaucoma Surgeries at Rushabh Eye Hospital and Laser Center

Step 1. Eyes to monitor - the Ideal distance :Your computer monitor should be straight in front of you ideally at a distance of more than 25 inches from your eyes.

Step 2. Monitor Location :The ideal viewing area of the monitor is 6 inches, below the horizontal eye level.

Step 3. Font color selection :Preferably work with fonts of darker shades on light background & vice versa.

Step 4. Anti-glare screen :Attach an anti-glare screen in front of the monitor which will decrease the amount of light reflected from the screen.

Step 5. Document holder :Use a screen mounted document holder, positioned between keyboard & monitor screen almost at the same distance & height as that of the monitor.

Page 7: Cataract,Lasik,Retina,Glaucoma Surgeries at Rushabh Eye Hospital and Laser Center

Step 6. Light effect :Use suspended lights from ceiling & windows with shades, blinds or curtains. Avoid light hitting directly on eyes.

Step 7. Sitting posture :Use chairs with armrests which are able to provide, support while typing, position of head slightly titled downwards & height of the chair adjusted appropriately so that the feet rest flat on floor.

Step 8. A.C. distance :Avoid sitting at a location with direct blow of air on eyes from a blower or an A.C. or for a long period in a room with low humidity.

Step 9. 20-20-20 rule :Take a short breaks for your eyes every 20 minutes between your work for 20 seconds than look at objects that are at least 20 feet away.

Step 10. Eye exercise :Close your eyes & slowly roll your eyeballs clockwise & anticlockwise. Repeat it for three times.

Cataract Surgery

•Rays of light passes through the eye•They get focused on retina (seeing tissue of the eye)

•An image is created and that’s how we see the world

• Cataract is the clouding of the natural lens in the eye• It results in blurring of vision.

•The only treatment currently available is Surgery … •Phacoemulsification:

•Here the cataract is removed through a 2.8 mm incision -This procedure doesn’t require any sutures. - And new foldable lens is implanted. -Healing and Visual Recovery is faster-Chances of wound infection are minimized-Surgery restores vision in a week’s time.

Refractive Errors

How do we see the world?- In the Normal Eye, the rays of light get focused on retina to produce sharp and clear picture.

Myopia-Here the length of the eyeball is more than normal i.e why image is formed in front of retina .-Myopes can see near objects clearly but not distant objects

Hyperopia- Here the image falls behind the retina as the eyeball is shorter than normalNear objects become difficult to see compared to distance

Astigmatism-Here the cornea is oblong instead of SphericalIt is result of uneven curvatures of the corneaResulting in blurring of image at any distance

Treatment options available: one can choose Spectacles or can use contactlenses or the most effective treatment choose by patients across the world is LASIK – laser Vision Correction

Glaucoma

In the Normal Eye, light rays pass through Cornea, Pupil, Lens and fall on the Retina That’s how we see the world clearly

What happens in Glaucoma?Inside of the eye contains fluid that is constantly flowing and drained out of the eye. Blockage of drainage Mechanism results in fluid accumulating in the eye which damages the nerve of the eye.

Glaucoma causes constriction of peripheral field of vision.

A detailed Glaucoma evaluation is recommended for proper diagnosis

Treatment:

Eye drops

Laser

Surgery

Retinal Detachment (RD)

Rays Of light pass through the cornea, lens ,vitreous and fall on normal retina (macula) to produce a clear image.

Opacities in vitreous result in floaters

Separation of retinal layers from the underlined pigment epithelium Is called as RD

Treatment:

A silicon band is encircled around the eye, and Retina is flattened into place by injecting air/oil bubble

RD due to diabetic retinopathy involves Endolaser with vitrectomy

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR)

In the Normal Eye light gets focussed on retina to produce clear picture

In DR :The blood vessels in the retina develop tiny leaks which causes swelling of retina producing blurred image

Some cases may develop wrinkling and detachment of retina

Thorough Eye Examination with help of OCT and FFA aid in diagnosis

Treatment Available:-Argon Laser -Injection Avastin/Lucentis

In severe cases new blood vessels develop on retinaIn extreme cases surgery (vitrectomy/repair of retinal detachment)

Age Related Macular Degeneration

In the Normal Eye, rays of light pass through the cornea, pupil ,lens and fall on retina to produce sharp image & clear picture.

ARMD: This is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss in people over age of 60 years.

ARMD affects the central part of retina called as Macula. This is the only part which is capable of producing a sharp and crisp image, any damage to Macula will lead to blurred vision, wavy vision, even loss in Central part of vision.

There are two types of ARMDDry AMD and Wet AMDWhat is Dry AMD-? Accumulation of abnormal material beneath the retina called as Drusens

What is wet AMD-?Beneath the macula, there is formation of abnormal blood vessels which leak and bleed leading to more severe vision loss.

Diagnosis: FFA, OCT and ICG

Treatment:

Anti-oxidants

Injection Avastin/ Lucentis

PDT
