History:

Smithtown was first settled in about 1665. A Native American Chief granted Richard Smith all the land that he was able to encircle in one

day on his bull. Smith’s bull, Whisper, helped him to gain the land so a statue of him was erected on the Fork of Jericho Turnpike.

Present:

Today Smithtown is a large town covering about 111.4 square miles and is inhabited by roughly115,715 people. Smithtown’s excellent

school district has two high schools, three middle schools, and nine elementary schools. There are lots of shopping opportunities as well

as many local restaurants to enjoy a nice meal.

Expansion Management Magazine, a national magazine, listed Smithtown Central School District in the top 16% of districts in the country. The large

school district covers approximately 25 square miles and has around 11,000 students enrolled.

The Eastern Campus is located in St. James and has students from Nesaquake Middle School and students from Great Hollow Middle School that attended Tackan and Nesconset Elementary

School.
