Catalysts Catalysts are substances which speed

up chemical reactions. At the end of the reaction, the catalyst is left unchanged.

substances which speed up chemical reaction

Page 3: Catalysts/Enzymes/biological catalysts/what are catalysts/what are enzymes

Catalysts lower the activation energy for both forward and reverse reactionS.They are very important for every segment in our life.

WHAT DO THEY D

O?

Page 4: Catalysts/Enzymes/biological catalysts/what are catalysts/what are enzymes

This means , the catalyst changes the reaction path by lowering its activation energy and the catalyst increases the rate of reaction.

Here is a picture demonstrating this.

Page 5: Catalysts/Enzymes/biological catalysts/what are catalysts/what are enzymes

EXAMPLESThis picture shows an

example of an uncatalyzed pathway

and a catalyzed pathway.The

uncatalyzed pathway,as demonstrated in the picture, has far more

energy than the catalyzed pathway.

Page 6: Catalysts/Enzymes/biological catalysts/what are catalysts/what are enzymes

Here is another picture showing an uncatalyzed substance and a catalyzed substance.clearly, the uncatalyzed substance requires more energy than the catalyzed one.

Page 7: Catalysts/Enzymes/biological catalysts/what are catalysts/what are enzymes

Catalysts make it easier for particles to react. With a catalyst,a lot more particles have enough energy to react.

Page 8: Catalysts/Enzymes/biological catalysts/what are catalysts/what are enzymes

A catalyst lowers the activation energy.

Page 9: Catalysts/Enzymes/biological catalysts/what are catalysts/what are enzymes

For example,Iron catalyst is used in manufacturing ammonia(Haber process)

IRON(Fe) AMMONIA (NH3)

ENZYMESEnzymes are biological catalysts. An enzyme is a large protein molecule.

Page 11: Catalysts/Enzymes/biological catalysts/what are catalysts/what are enzymes

ENZYMES DON’T WORK AT HIGH TEMPERATURES.THEIR SHAPES CHANGE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES AND THEY BECOMES DENATURED.

ENYMES DURING DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES!
