Intangible Treasures

W

e tend to talk about the enormous generosity of our

donors in tangible terms. We use words like “investment,”

“resources,” and “endowment.” And we cherish the brick-

and-mortar results: state-of-the-art facilities, a world-class faculty, and

exceptional academic programs. Cedars-Sinai’s success has been built,

nurtured, and sustained by you, our philanthropic partners.

But the intangible treasures you share with us are timeless. Donor

loyalty across years, and even generations, enables Cedars-Sinai to plan

and grow. Philanthropic vision cultivates new programs and research

initiatives. And compassion is what binds our family of caregivers,

scientists, and supporters.

Examples of extraordinary loyalty are all around the Medical Center.

The inimitable Barbra Streisand is a generous partner whose gifts go

far beyond philanthropy—to education and advocacy. She tirelessly

champions women’s cardiac health and has provided her leadership,

along with her name, to the Barbra Streisand

Women’s Heart Center at our Heart Institute.

In this issue, you will also find the

story of an exceptional couple, Robert

(Bob) and Georgia Roth. When Bob found

himself surviving—and thriving—after heart

transplantation surgery, the Roths made a

gift that will support bold heart research for

generations to come. Compassion, vision,

loyalty: The Roths possess these intangible treasures in spades.

So does the automaker Lexus. For eight continuous years, Lexus has

funneled its pioneering spirit into the Board of Governors Gala, which

supports projects from advanced cancer care to heart stem cell research.

Year after year, the company helps fund game-changing research—and

donates a top-of-the-line luxury vehicle for the gala’s opportunity

drawing—asking absolutely nothing in return.

We are deeply grateful to each and every visionary donor who

inspires success and sustains us through difficult times. And we give a

warm Cedars-Sinai welcome to our new donors: more than 10,000 of

you joined us in fiscal year 2012.

With your gifts—tangible and intangible, but all 100 percent

heartfelt and 100 percent appreciated—the future of biomedicine and

compassionate care at our Medical Center knows no bounds.

Thank you.

The Gift of Life—Twice

T en years ago, Dylan Worthen became the youngest, smallest

kidney transplant recipient ever at Cedars-Sinai. Today, he’s a

healthy tween, thanks to the dedication of his parents, Annette

and Ron, and the visionary care he received at Cedars-Sinai.

When he was still in his mother’s womb, the situation was very different.

Ultrasounds revealed Dylan had multicystic dysplastic kidneys. Simply put,

his kidneys had formed abnormally and were covered in cysts. According

to their community doctor, the condition amounted to a death sentence.

Their refusal to give up hope led the Santa Clarita couple to the

office of Andrew Freedman, MD, director of Pediatric Urology at

Cedars-Sinai and vice chair of Pediatric Surgical Services. Things

weren’t quite as grim as they’d feared. Dr. Freedman told them about

options that could save baby Dylan—including a kidney transplant.

Dylan was born at Cedars-Sinai and, for a year, his kidneys held up.

When a transplant became inevitable, Ron and Annette insisted that one

of them serve as the organ donor. Her smaller size meant the task fell to

Annette, as her kidney would better fit into baby Dylan’s abdominal cavity.

Unfortunately, tests revealed another hurdle. The antibodies in Dylan’s

system would reject his mother’s kidney. Nearly a third of patients suffering

kidney failure have highly sensitized immune systems poised to attack a

donor organ as though it were a harmful intruder, making them ineligible

Fresh CoatCedars-Sinai is receiving a fresh coat of paint as part of a major beautification project to be completed in 2014. Workers will cover an estimated 885,250 square feet of exterior walls with 5,875 gallons of acrylic paint. The Medical Center earned a Community Impact Award from the Los Angeles Business Council for the “transformational development project,” which will include water fountains, sculptures, and roadways framed by palm trees and other greenery. Crews began the repainting project in April 2012 and will complete that part of the beautification effort in July 2013.

“If it wasn’t for Dr. Stanley

Jordan’s research, our son

wouldn’t be here today.

He needed a second kidney

transplant after his first

was rejected. This is very

high risk, and many doctors

won’t do it, but Dr. Jordan

is remarkable. We traveled

to Cedars-Sinai from the

South so he could save our

23-year-old son’s life.”

—Dr. James O. Smith and Dr. Deborah D. Smith, whose gift honored Stanley C. Jordan, MD, director of Kidney Transplantation and Transplant Immunology, Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Center, and director of Pediatric and Adult Nephrology

for transplants. Baby Dylan turned out to be among that one in three.

Cedars-Sinai had the solution. Stanley C. Jordan, MD, and his team of

researchers at the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Center had developed an

innovative process called intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy. The

therapy reduces the risk of rejection by adding antibodies to the patient’s

bloodstream that offset the effects of the hyper-vigilant antibodies already

in place. Unlike many other anti-rejection therapies, IVIG does not suppress

the entire immune system; it works by boosting the patient’s protection

against infection.

About 40 percent of the patients who come to Cedars-Sinai for a kidney

transplant are highly sensitized. According to Dr. Jordan, between 95

percent and 97 percent can be successfully desensitized with IVIG. At 12

months old, Dylan became the youngest Cedars-Sinai patient to benefit

from this remarkable new therapy.

When all was ready, J. Louis Cohen, MD, surgical director of the Kidney

Transplant program, led the operation to place Annette’s kidney into

her baby son. The procedure was a success. The combined efforts of the

multidisciplinary expert team—which included pediatric nephrologists,

urologists, dietitians, nurses, and surgeons—resulted in a healthy baby

and a mother who recovered enough to care for him in her hospital room.

Dylan, now 11, is a typical, energy-filled tween. Although his transplant

bars him from playing contact sports, he remains athletic, enjoying

swimming, baseball, and volleyball. He also loves his PlayStation®, and his

username reveals his good humor about what he went through.

It’s “Kidneykid.”

Did you know?Iconic American writer Gore Vidal and his partner, Howard Austen, gave up La Rondinaia—their longtime home on Italy’s Amalfi Coast—to live out “the Cedars-Sinai years,” so they would be close to the best possible medical care. Austen died not long after they returned to the Hollywood Hills in 2003, while Vidal passed away at age 86 in July 2012.

Nurturing Better Habits Year-Round

When it comes to nutrition and fitness, summer is no time for a vacation from healthier choices.

Cedars-Sinai’s Healthy Habits programs foster good nutrition and exercise habits for both adults and children.

Milk or soda? Carrots or chips? Exercise or TV?

Let’s face it: Unhealthy

choices can be tempting no matter what our age. But a growing number

of parents and children in disadvantaged Los Angeles neighborhoods

now make healthier choices when it comes to questions like the above—

thanks to Cedars-Sinai’s Healthy Habits program aimed at combatting

childhood obesity. Healthy Habits is helping children and families learn

about healthy eating and physical activity with programs reaching

elementary and middle school students, parents of preschool children,

and families in underserved communities.

In partnership with LA’s Best, Koreatown Youth and Community

Center (KYCC), and other community organizations, Cedars-Sinai recently

expanded these programs to include summer sessions. We caught up

with them one day last August. Parents and kids alike proved that it’s

never too late—or too early—to cultivate healthy habits.

8:30 a.m., Bennie H. Potter West Adams Avenues Memorial, South Los Angeles“Okay, let’s dance. Breathe!”

Bianca Bracho-Perez, a Cedars-Sinai community health educator, leads

a small group of women in a one-hour Zumba® routine that includes a

mix of moves ranging from sit-ups to salsa. Latin music pulsating from

a boom box sets the pace. Despite the energy-sapping muggy air, this

group doesn’t miss a beat.

They’ve been working out together several times a week since late

June. Wandering through the maze of moms in motion are children who

seem fascinated by the music and movement. After the women sit on the

ground for a series of stretches, a toddler fitness buff in the making plops

down next to his mom and leans over to touch his toes.

Nurturing Better Habits Year-RoundHelping parents set a good example for their kids is just one of the

positive effects of this Healthy Habits Exercise in the Park program.

Participants have lost weight, toned muscles, made friends—and they leave

this last session of the summer with a resolve to keep moving.

Jackie Cole, for example, is highly motivated after losing 10 pounds over the

summer. She now does Zumba workouts at home with her 6-year-old daughter.

Jackie has discovered exercise makes her feel better emotionally as well as

physically. As she puts it, “I get anxious sometimes, but the workouts help Zen

me out.”

1:30 p.m., Kim Elementary School, KoreatownThe 15 second-graders in Sunny Hu’s classroom sing to the tune of “Itsy

Bitsy Spider,” with the lyrics changed to provide a lesson about how milk,

yogurt, and cheese “can make you tall and grow.” The children enjoy

themselves so much that they barely miss the details of the spider’s perilous

waterspout climb. Sunny, a Cedars-Sinai Healthy Habits educator, has this

group’s full attention for an hour of games and activities designed to stretch

their minds and bodies. Part of Cedars-Sinai’s wide-ranging effort to fight

childhood obesity, the weekly workshop is offered over a six-week period at

KYCC’s summer day camp as well as several other L.A. day camps.

Sunny leads the children in versions of “Red Light, Green Light” and

“Bingo” that highlight healthy foods. She makes the most of every teachable

moment by keeping the focus on fun.

And now it’s time to exercise. Sunny calls out the name of a food and the

class must remember a different movement for each food group. No problem.

These kids are quick. So when Sunny says “green bean,” they immediately

bend over to touch their toes and then rise up to become a “stretchable

vegetable.” The whole class giggles every time the dairy group comes up and

they get to sway their hips and do the “milk mambo.”

The session ends with the students mixing together yogurt, blueberries, and

whole-wheat nuggets cereal to make a yogurt parfait. They appear to enjoy

this nutritious snack as much as if it were a dish of ice cream.

Mission accomplished.

Did you know?Cedars-Sinai’s Healthy Habits programs are part of a strategic effort to combat childhood obesity and reduce or prevent the devastating health effects associated with poor eating habits and lack of physical activity. In the 2011–12 school year, these programs reached more than 2,500 elementary and middle-school children, teachers, parents, and families through more than 17,000 educational encounters.

NotMıssıng a BeatMultiple Grammy® Award-winning

superstar Barbra Streisand—the only artist ever to receive Oscar®, Tony®, Emmy®, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globe®, National Medal of Arts, and Peabody awards—recently set her sights on a different type of record. She is lending her energy, resources, and star power to help end decades of gender-biased research and provide new hope, education, and breakthrough treatments for women suffering from, or at risk for, cardiovascular disease.

From the moment she learned that more women than men die of heart disease—and of the disparity in gender-appropriate research—Barbra Streisand became a vocal advocate and supporter of the Women’s Heart Center at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. She began supporting the center in 2007, rolling up her sleeves and taking an active role in raising awareness and research funding. Then, by 2012, she made her biggest commitment of all—bringing her personal commitment to $10 million, and raising an additional $12 million for a total of more than $22 million, for the newly named Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center.

Through her advocacy as a visible spokeswoman and philanthropic leader, Streisand’s work is music to the ears of women everywhere. Here we take a look at some of the high notes she has hit in this important effort.

A proud role | “I have played many roles over the years, but one that makes me particularly proud is the role I play as a supporter of the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Center.”

Leadership | “I chose to support the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai because of the leadership role they are taking to advance heart care, research, and education focused on women. Shockingly, we are 50 years behind on the research since, up until recently, women have been treated based on tests and diagnostics done mostly on men, and heart attacks present differently in women than they do in men.”

Education and change | “Women need to be educated about female cardiovascular disease, and the medical community must be propelled toward change.”

Facing the odds | “As we go about our everyday lives, it’s easy to take for granted the strong, steady beating of our hearts. But, sadly, the odds are that many of us will someday face serious cardiac problems. The fact is heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States.”

“I am so happy to be a part of this bold new initiative at Cedars-Sinai, and I know the work done by Dr. Noel Bairey Merz and her colleagues at the Women’s Heart Center will help save many lives and serve countless women for generations to come.”

Rising mortality rates | “While the mortality rate for men with coronary artery disease has been declining for the past 30 years, the number of women who die from it is rising.”

Training camp | “I’ve met patients who have consulted two or three cardiologists and they are still misdiagnosed because many doctors are not given the proper training to know the warning signs in women.”

Gift of giving | “For me, the gift is in the giving, not the recognition. But I felt such

a need for people to learn about the situation that I lent my name to it as

a way to bring greater awareness about this cause to people who

might never read the science pages of The New York Times.”

Life-saving | “I know the work done by Dr. Noel Bairey Merz and her colleagues will help save lives and serve countless women.”

Yentl SyndromeTheAfter decades of gender bias in coronary disease research—in which lifesaving treatments were developed through studies conducted solely on men—the tide is beginning to turn, thanks in large part to activists such as Streisand and physicians such as C. Noel Bairey Merz, MD, director of the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center and the Women’s Guild Chair in Women’s Health. Appropriately, this inequality was dubbed the “Yentl syndrome” in 1991 by the late Bernadine Healy, MD, the first woman director of the National Institutes of Health—after one of Streisand’s signature roles, a young woman who disguises herself as a man to receive an education. And, as in Yentl—which she also produced, directed, and wrote—Streisand is playing a dynamic part in eradicating gender disparities.

The Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center is conducting research into female-pattern ischemic heart disease, the development of new diagnostic tools, and the advancement of specialized care for women.

The Center’s physicians and researchers are also working to better understand microvascular coronary dysfunction, a condition that affects mostly women and goes undetected in standard heart disease tests; the heart’s small vessels in this dysfunction lose their ability to dilate and allow blood flow. Researchers are exploring the power of female stem cells in regenerating healthy heart muscle after a heart attack and have also identified gender-specific genes that increase or reduce heart disease risk in women.

Streisand’s latest commitment will support an expansion of these efforts, along with ambitious programs in prevention and education. These efforts will also benefit males, which is important since heart disease is also the No. 1 killer of men.

Second-class citizens | “We can no longer afford the unfair misconception that heart disease is mostly a man’s problem. Nothing could be further from the truth, and in fact this fallacy relegates women to second-class citizens. The need for more research into women’s heart disease is urgent.”

Hope | “Women have paid a huge price for the medical and scientific community not knowing about the important gender differences in heart disease. What gives me hope is knowing that the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Center is here for us.”

On the cusp | “We’re on the cusp of understanding the uniqueness, in terms of gender, in the way symptoms of heart disease present themselves. Women must learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of the disease; physicians should also receive specialized training to diagnose these women and devise better treatments.” Not just a man’s disease | “Tragically, too often women are unaware of the danger of cardiovascular and heart disease. Many people still think heart disease is just a man’s disease. That’s why it’s so important that women empower themselves and get educated about female cardiovascular disease. It’s also important that the medical community expand its research to better understand the gender differences in this area.”

Page 13: Catalyst - Cedars-Sinai

Research for women | “Women don’t typically have the chest pains or left-arm pains. They come into the hospital with nausea and fatigue, but we don’t have the proper diagnostic techniques or machinery because the research in the past 50 years has been done mostly on men.”

Catching up | “Thanks to Cedars-Sinai and the brilliant Dr. Noel Bairey Merz, the medical community will finally be catching up. Proper research will be conducted and communicated to women so that they will be more informed about their own health.”

People who need people | “Heart research done on women also benefits men. Isn’t it funny how females always seem to help males?”

CATALYSTFALL2012 11

“Many people still think heart disease is just a man’s disease. That’s why it’s so important that women empower themselves and get educated.”

8.6 500

million | “Worldwide, about 400,000 women die [each year] from breast cancer, but 8.6 million die from heart disease.”

thousand | “Five hundred thousand women in the United States die from cardiovascular disease each year … more than all cancers combined. That is a staggering number.”

percent | “Consider this: 40 percent of women don’t survive their first heart attack. Now you can see why I’m motivated to do this work!”

percent | “Seventy-one percent of women experience early warning signs of a heart attack, such as sudden onset of extreme weakness that feels like the flu, often with no chest pain at all.”

percent | “Nearly two-thirds of the deaths from heart attacks in women occur among those who have no history of chest pain. Most women don’t know this and, oftentimes, by the time they enter the emergency room, their hearts have suffered substantial damage.”

A Stat Is BornA vocal advocate, Streisand is all too aware of the numbers of women affected by heart disease every year.

Page 14: Catalyst - Cedars-Sinai

Barbra Streisand hosted an intimate event

at her Malibu estate in June to benefit

women’s cardiovascular disease research

and education at Cedars-Sinai. The

evening also brought forth the announcement that

the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Center, under the

direction of C. Noel Bairey Merz, MD, has been

named for Streisand, a supporter since 2007.

In addition to Streisand and her husband, James

Brolin, attendees included President Bill Clinton,

media industry heavyweights Sumner Redstone, Ron

Meyer, and Haim Saban, fashion designer Donna

Karan, and actress Diane Lane. Martin Short provided

the comedy and Lior Suchard offered his mentalist

magic. Songs flowed from Josh Groban, David Foster,

and the host herself.

Streisand first began supporting Cedars-Sinai’s

Women’s Heart Center soon after she met Dr. Bairey

Merz and learned about the prevalence of women’s

heart disease and the disparity in research funding.

“In recent decades, women have made enormous

strides, but not when it comes to medical research,”

Streisand told the crowd. “I was shocked to learn

that heart disease kills more women than all cancers

combined and that more women die annually of heart

disease than men. As a matter of fact, last year, nearly

half a million died from it. Yet given those statistics,

very little money is spent on research specifically for

women. To me, that is just unacceptable.”

After taking the stage to a standing ovation,

President Clinton spoke movingly about his mother,

Virginia Clinton Kelley, her losing battle with cancer,

and about how much Streisand’s friendship meant to

his mom during the year before she passed away. He

reiterated Streisand’s concern about the historic lack

of research on heart disease in women. “Our country

has always believed in being not only a laboratory

of democracy but also a laboratory of science and

advancement. You can’t do that with a straight face and

leave women out.” He went on to describe the passion

and dedication of his longtime friend Streisand, and her

commitment to the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Center

that now bears her name. “I love you for doing this. We

all do, and we thank you.”

On our best days,

our bodies are smooth-running machines. The job of a smart healthcare provider is to use innovative solutions to keep our precious machines operating at peak performance. That’s a mission the people at Lexus know all about.

“From a certain perspective, a human body and a car are similar,” says Mark Templin, group vice president and general manager for the luxury automaker. “It’s our job to make people’s lives better by coming up with solutions to make sure all the complex systems are running optimally.”

Inspired by this shared perspective, Lexus has driven groundbreaking efforts at Cedars-Sinai. Every year since 2005, Lexus has sponsored the Board of Governors Gala. “Lexus has been an absolutely phenomenal supporter and totally dedicated to Cedars-Sinai and the Gala,” says John Coleman, Board of Governors chair from 2010 to 2011. The flagship event has grossed more than $8 million to cultivate projects such as the Center for Cancer Research and the Heart Stem Cell Center.

“Innovation is turbocharged inspiration,” says Nancy Hubbell, Lexus Prestige communications manager. Lexus’s pioneering spirit has brought the company to the forefront of the automotive industry, with technologies such as a state-of-the-art pre-collision safety system that can automatically bring a car to a full stop to avoid an accident. “You have to believe in your goal and take unconventional steps to get there. I’ve toured the Heart Stem Cell Center, and unconventional science is exactly what they are doing,” says Hubbell.

Experts at the Center are using regenerative medicine technology to heal patients whose hearts have been damaged by a heart attack. “Scientists and clinicians at Cedars-Sinai are transforming medicine,” says Board of Governors Chair Steve Hitter. “With Lexus as a partner, the Board of Governors is right there beside them, paving the road to the future.”

Getting your driver’s license marks one of the greatest rites of passage in our society. Hearing your name called as the winner of a brand-new luxury car is a more rare occurrence.

Since 2005, Lexus has helped fuel the Board of Governors annual Gala through the donation of luxury vehicles and opportunity-drawing ticket sales, steering more than $1.7 million toward support for cancer and heart stem cell research at Cedars-Sinai.

Here, recent Lexus winners from the Board of Governors Gala share their experiences, fondest memories, and idiosyncratic habits on the great open road.

climbed the 300 steps to the first level of the Eiffel Tower in Paris this summer, he couldn’t help but marvel at the new heart that got him there. “I wasn’t the fastest, but I made it,” he says.

In January 2008, Bob had a heart transplant. The Newport Beach executive had already faced down a quadruple bypass in 2003 and adopted a rigorous program of diet, exercise, and medication. But it wasn’t enough to forestall advancing heart failure. “His heart just didn’t want to work anymore,” says his wife, Georgia.

“You can’t help but be terrified when you hear the word ‘transplant,’” Bob recalls. “But I was more scared I wouldn’t get a heart than I was about the surgery itself.”

His good fortune was fleeting. He found out his failing heart had also caused his kidneys to suffer irreparable damage. So just one year after his heart transplant, he discovered he needed a kidney transplant as well. After yet another transplant surgery, Bob was finally back on the road to good health. “We were already a close, blended family,” says Georgia. “This brought us even closer,” adds Bob, emblematic of a couple used to finishing each other’s sentences.

Even as he recounts his many medical challenges, Bob maintains his trademark warm smile. “All that tremendous support helped me keep a positive attitude,” he says.

That attitude extends to the expert medical team that cared for him at Cedars-Sinai, with Jon Kobashigawa, MD, at the helm. “They’re not only smart people, they’re kind people,” says Bob. “Everyone made sure I always knew what was happening, and they watched over Georgia, too.”

Dr. Kobashigawa—associate director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, director of Advanced Heart Disease, director of the Heart Transplant Program, and the DSL/Thomas D. Gordon Chair in Heart Transplantation Medicine—is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the heart transplant field. For the second consecutive year, the Heart Transplant Program performed more adult heart transplants than any other U.S. medical center.

“I had a lot of questions, and they answered them all,” notes Georgia, who serves as a tireless advocate for her husband. “She’s been outstanding,” Bob says, adding affectionately, “a warrior on my behalf.”

Bob remains active as president of the company his father founded, World Oil Corporation, but the couple is taking time to “make memories,” he says. They’re finding more reasons to travel and to gather with their extended family, which includes eight grandchildren.

In 2011, Bob and Georgia made a gift through the Robert S. Roth and Georgia L. Roth Family Foundation to name the Advanced Heart Disease Center Lobby in the Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion now under construction at Cedars-Sinai. Half of their gift will go to the Heart Institute Fund, which supports early-stage research and clinical trials, among other causes.

“The progress Cedars-Sinai’s researchers are making with heart stem cells is very exciting,” Bob says of research to repair and regrow heart tissue after an attack. “And it’s not medical care that will be happening 20 to 30 years from now: It’s coming soon. Selfishly, and for everyone else, I want this to succeed.”

As Bob Roth and his 13-year-old granddaughter, Miranda,

“The progress Cedars-Sinai’s researchers are making with heart stem cells is very exciting. And it’s not medical care that will be happening 20 to 30 years from now: It’s coming soon.” —BoB RoTH

Emily Vance knocks lightly on a patient’s door without hesitation, though she admits this was once the most

intimidating part of every shift.Wires snake around a nursing cart,

and Emily is quick to move them out of the way. She stops to make sure the patient’s bedside table is within reach, and double-checks that the cart, full of supplies, is locked.

If it weren’t for her pale blue volunteer jacket, one would think she was already a Cedars-Sinai nurse. Emily is a natural. She buzzes in and out of hospital rooms, checking for potential safety hazards, tending to patient needs—from offering a listening ear to finding their favorite magazine—and always remembering to sanitize her hands when entering and exiting.

She is not a nurse yet, but thanks to the Nurse Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) program in the Volunteer Services Department, she soon will be. A collaboration between Volunteer Services and the Department of Nursing, the TCAB program is designed for people who are considering a nursing career, and who have varying levels of experience. TCAB volunteers shadow nurses, getting a firsthand look at the procedures and duties required. They gain hands-on experience and invaluable insights into a nursing career—all while helping the Medical Center’s nurses do their jobs efficiently and effectively. Even sitting at the nursing station offers insights into the complex level of multitasking involved in successfully running a hospital floor.

“The TCAB program has really given me a well-rounded perspective,” says

Emily, a petite and energetic brunette with sun-freckled skin from daily outdoor workouts. “I get to see things from both the patient perspective and the nursing perspective, and I get a close look at how much teamwork nursing requires.”

Barbara Leanse, director of Volunteer Services adds, “We are always looking for ways to complement and supplement our staff, and introducing volunteers to a nursing career is a great way to do this.”

Emily is now enrolled in the competitive Mount St. Mary’s accelerated nursing program. “When I got my acceptance letter, I was over the moon,” she says. “When I began my first hospital rotation, I realized immediately that the TCAB program at Cedars-Sinai had helped familiarize me with a hospital environment. My experiences with TCAB are going to give me a leg up. So many of the Cedars-Sinai nurses have taken time to explain nitty-gritty details about equipment and processes.”

The nurse manager on her floor, Joanne Pileggi, RN, thinks that TCAB is exactly the type of program needed for the future of the profession. “We need more dedicated nurses in the field, people who care. The TCAB volunteers give to us and we are able to give to them by being role models.”

After her first and most memorable day as a volunteer, Emily was convinced she was making the right career move. “I spent all day holding a patient’s hand while she was getting tests done. At the end, the patient thanked me and her nurse thanked me. I went home feeling like a rock star—not only was I there for the patient, but I helped the hospital out, too.”

I always knew I wanted a hands-on job while making an impact, and TCAB was the deciding factor.

Nurses must navigate touchy situations that concern not just the patient but also the patient’s family. You can’t just be a good healthcare provider; you need to be an empathetic human being.
