LIBRARY RULES.
1. The Library shall be open for the use of Members daily, with
the exception of Sundays, Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter
Monday, Whit Monday, and the first Monday in August, and on
Wednesdays, when it shall be closed at noon.
2. Every Member of the Society whose annual subscription
sliall not be in arrear for more than three months, may borrow out
of the Library any number of printed volumes not exceeding four,
and may exchange any of the borrowed volumes for others as often
as he pleases ; but he must not liave more than four in liis possession
at the same time.
3. Members may take books out of the Library personally,
or they may have them sent to their addresses on payment of car-
riage, on making written application to the Librarian. In either
event, the press mark, title of the book borrowed, the borrower's
name and address, and the date when the book is taken out, must
be entered in the Library Delivery Book, in the first case by the
borrower personally, in the presence of the Librarian, or some-
one deputed on his behalf ; and in the second case by the Librarian
or his deputy. The date when the book is returned must also
be entered in the Library Delivery Book.
4. No book borrowed out of the Library shall be retained
for a longer period than one month, if the same be applied
for in the meantime by any other member ; nor in any case
for a longer period than three months.,
5. Every Member who shall borrow any book out of the
Library shall be responsible for its return (carriage paid) in
safety and in good condition ; and in case of loss or damage
he shall replace the work, or make the damage good.
6. Manuscripts may be consulted in the Library on making
arrangements with the Librarian. Extracts from the manu-
scripts are allowed to be made freely ; but in the case of a
transcript being desired of a whole manuscript, the consent

out of the Library except upon a resolution of the Council,
and for a period to be fixed by such resolution.
7. The Library Committee shall prepare from time to time a
list of such works as shall not be lent out of the Library on
account of their rarity, value, or peculiar liability to damage,
or on account of their being works of reference often needed
by Members using the Library ; and a copy of such list shall
be kept in the Library.
8. No book shall be lent out to any person not being a
member of the Societ}^ without a special resolution of the
Council.
Regulation for the Use of MSS.
A general search among the MSS. can only be made in
the presence of a Member of the Library Committee, but a
single MS., or a number not exceeding three, may be consulted
by arrangement with the Hon. Librarian ; but in this case
each MS. must be taken out and replaced by a Member of the
Library Committee, who shall hand it to the Housekeeper.
The Housekeeper shall keep each MS. locked up, and shall produce
it to the searcher when required, and receive it back from
him at the completion of his search, again placing it under
lock and key until it can be replaced in its proper position
with the other MSS. by the Member of the Library Committee.
NOTICE.For the convenience of Members, it may be stated that
the whole of the books, forming the Brooke Bequest (marked
BB in the Catalogue), and the Calendars of the State Papers,
are included in the list of works not allowed to be taken out
of the Library.
