Introduction
Andrew Mentis (Pty) Ltd was first formed in 1950 as a precision engineering works
and subsequently went into the development and manufacture of steel grating. In
1959 Gripweld grating was produced in South Africa by Andrew Mentis, followed by
the unique Rectagrid grating, in 1967. Through continual research and development,
Andrew Mentis (Pty) Ltd has become a leading manufacturer of grating.
The company has been successful in gaining a share in overseas markets, and locally
has supplied vast quantities of quality products to all of the major industries including
power generation, mining, petrochemical, motor, construction, food, paper and steel.
In addition to grating, the company offers expanded metal, Mentrail (guard-rails for
roads), Mentcano (perforated steel sections), industrial handrail systems, steel floor tiles
and Mendrill (automatic drilling and boring machines).
In 2012 Andrew Mentis (Pty) Ltd acquired R & R Engineering (WA) Pty Ltd.
R & R Engineering started in 2000 in the hills of Perth and quickly became the handrail
fabricator of choice, through quality workmanship, to some of the leading Construction
and Project Engineering Companies in WA.
To maintain a quality product, R&R installed the latest Robotic Welders and designed its
own Stanchion Drilling Machine. Coupled with one of the latest auto Bending Machines
available in the world, R&R is able to offer a firm commitment to delivery schedules for
standard and non-standard handrail, at competitive rates.
All Stanchions are designed to Australian Standards 1657 and dedicated Robotic Welders
ensure uniformity and quality in all our welds, which conform to AS 1554 SP.
In 2006, R&R successfully entered the Grating and Tread fabrication market as a direct
result of customer pressure to compliment the R&R handrail.
Now with the combined experience and quality driven reputation of both companies
united, you can be rest assured of Quality Service Innovation.

Mentis Fabricated Handrail System
The Mentis Handrail System has been developed by taking long standing industry standards to a new
quality level through an innovative approach towards manufacturing
and fabrication.
Through the application of robotic welding technology, advanced manufacturing machinery
methods and high standards in fabrication, Mentis Handrail is fabricated to a high quality standard
at competitive pricing.
Mentis Handrail is fabricated to meet Australian Standards AS1657.
In cooperation with you, and with the fundamental drawing layouts and information as detailed in this
brochure, we are able to partner with you in the manufacturing, fabrication and supply of a handrail
system that can ultimately save you installation time on site.
One of the many ways in which this can be achieved, is through the fabrication of Mentis Handrail
panels up to 7 meters long, with the option of these
- being supplied and meeting your, or your customers’, surface treatment specifications
- strapped into manageable packs
- clearly identified with a unique numbering system (which corresponds to a handrail layout
drawing, or general arrangement drawing, to provide the precise location of each panel to
be installed)
- delivered to the required destination
Key factors in specifying the Mentis Handrail System are;
1. Material type - Mild Steel or Aluminium
2. Continuous - or Panelised Handrail panels.
Will each panel be a standalone section with closure bends or will all the panels be joined together
on site to form a continuous rail?
3. Stanchion (Post) Type
What type of Stanchion is best suited to the relevant structure or application, to ensure that Health
and Safety is not compromised.
4. Is Kickplate required? If so,...
What type of surface or floor is the Handrail to be mounted with, as this will affect the kickplate
bracket height on the Stanchion/s.
5. Self Closing Gates
Are any openings in the handrail to be protected with Self Closing Gates? This can include ladder
access openings as well.
6. Surface treatment options
Untreated, galvanised, painted, powder coated or, a combination of galvanised and painted.
Throughout the following pages we detail options available in determining the appropriate Mentis
Handrail System to be used.

Mentis Continuous Handrail
Mentis Continuous Handrail is designed to be prefabricated and joined on site to form a continuous handrail. This reduces
installation time and maintains the integrity of the surface treatment as much as possible. We will always split the handrail into
panels at a stanchion which provides strength at the joint. If this is not achievable, all joints outside a ball will have a spigot
welded inside the pipe to provide a strong connection between panels.
H3
www.mentis.com.au
Mentis Panelised Handrail
Mentis Panelised Handrail is designed to eliminate site welding altogether, which in turn keeps the surface treatment
completely in tack and makes for rapid installation. Gaps between panels should be a minimum of 25mm and a maximum
of 50mm to conform to AS1657 and 10mm on the kickplate, if kickplate is required.
H4
www.mentis.com.au
Mentis Handrail Fabrication Standards
As a standard, all ball to rail joints are seal-welded. This
provides a quality join that will not allow moisture ingress,
looks neat and is extra strong.
As standard, all Handrail joins are designed to occur at a
Stanchion ball. If for any reason a join is outside a ball a
spigot will be welded inside the pipe for strength.

Mentis Handrail Fabrication Standards
When fabricating Handrail we will endeavour to keep the
handrail and kneerail to the optimal length. We are able
to achieve this with our state of the art NC Bender, which
can bend 6.5m long pipe to suit the required handrail panel
including multiple bends. This reduces welding and spigot
joining thereby providing a stronger and higher quality
product.
As a standard, Kickplate is welded to the kickplate bracket
on the stanchions and at all other joints where practical. As
an option, kickplate can be bolted to the kickplate brackets
on the stanchions and at other joins.

Self Closing Gate - Mild Steel - P Standard
The Mentis self closing gate has been
specially designed to overcome the
problems of non closure experienced
by other manufacturers.
Mentis has designed a custom spring
which is three times longer and of
thicker section than those used by
other manufacturers. Current SC
Gates in operation have proven to
perform 45,000 swings without loss
in closing force.
Another advantage of the Mentis SC
Gates hinge mechanism is that the
closing force can be easily adjusted
on site, using a 30mm spanner.
In addition, nylon washers having a
low co-efficiency of friction ensure
long life and no unsightly rust stains.
All components used in our SC Gates
are either galvanised or made from
stainless steel.
Bolting hinges are avaialable to fit an
SC gate to existing stanchions, without
welding.
Important
When ordering Self Closing Gates (SC Gate), it is important to nominate the
swing direction required. (Refer to diagrams below).

Self Closing Drop (SCD) Bars are a cost effective alternative to SC Gates, particularly in areas where space is limited.
SCD Bars can be used in both one ball and standard two rail handrail applications. Designed for areas that are rarely used,
for example maintenance platforms, they offer some protection at an opening in the handrail system.
Drop Bars are generally supplied as a loose componant and can then be welded on site ensuring that the final position is
accurate.
All SCD Bars are manufactured from 32NB pipe.
When ordering SCD Bars, please ensure that Stanchion centres are specified.

Grating Introduction
Overview
Mentis Steel Grating is flat bar (Load
bar) on its edge, spaced at 30, 40
or 60mm centres with a twist rod
forged into the top of the flat bar at
50 or 100mm centres. Accepted
internationally, forge welding is the
strongest method of locking the load
bars in place as each intersection is
fused together with a massive amount
of heat and pressure.
Mentis Grating panels are fabricated
from untreated stock sheets in widths
(length of twist rod) of 965 to 1005,
subject to pattern choice and lengths
(length of Load bar) of up to 5800mm.
Pattern choice relates to load bar pitch
and twist rod pitch
(eg. A = 30mm C/C x 100mm C/C).
Standard grating depth is 25 and
32mm deep, in 5mm thick bars. Other
depths are also available in thicknesses
of 3 or 5mm, subject to availability.
Your choice would be subject to load
applications.
Ordering
A typical ordering code would be
as follows:
Mentis A325MPG
• A, B, C, D or F : Pattern
• Load bar depth (eg. 32)
• 5 : Load bar thickness
• M : Mild steel
• P or S : Load bar plain or
serrated top edge
• G, B or U : Galv, Bitumen or
Untreated
A fully dimensioned outline of grating,
support steel and cutout location is
required. Overall dimensions should
be inclusive of banding and kickplate.
When ordering fabricated grating,
it is supplied in multiple pieces, unless
specifically requested otherwise.
Options
Banding added to cutouts, side cuts and ends of panels is standard but can
optionally be unbanded.
Cutouts can be split for installation. Notification of which cutouts need to be
specifically split is a requirement.
Standard kickplate 130 x 6 and other sizes can be added as required.
10mm x 10mm square bar cleats should be added for slopping grating.

Load Deflection Table - Mild Steel
Use the table below and over the page to select the Grating Pattern that best suits your span requirements
Based on a 4kPa loading, the span indicated to the far right of the tables is what we recommend as a clear maximum span
when the grating is fixed in accordance with our recommendations. Use the nominal spans across the top of the tables as
an indication for other load requirements you may have. The heavy black line shows where the maximum span falls based
on the 4kPa load. Any span left of this line is compliant.

Banding, Support & Fixing Requirements
Banding
Standard branding is 5mm flat bar welded to the perimeter
of all grating panels.
Banding and kickplate banding is considered within the
perimeter of the panel size. They are welded to the side of
the cut bars and kickplate is not welded to the top of the
grating load bars.
Support Requirements
• Grating load bars must be supported.
• Support at maximum span intervals is required (subject
to load).
• Supporting the end of each panel is required but
supporting the sides is not.
• Panels that have more than two supports to fix the grating
to can cantilever on the load bar ends to a maximum of
250mm (subject to load & fixing method).
• Panels must never cantilever in the twist rod direction.
• Banding on a cutout is not designed to support the lopad
bars and therefore support should be provided around
cutouts.
• See the Supports Requirements section on page G20 for
more information.
Fixing Requirements
Securing the panels if required can be with welding,
MA001MG, MA002MG, or Huck fastener and clip for
steel grating, as shown in the diagram.

Fabrication
We supply a Grating Marking Plan which shows the general arrangement of each panel. Each panel is identified with a
panel mark number, which we allocate if you do not provide. In accordance with the Australian Standards we allow a nominal
10mm gap between panels. This should also be allowed around penetrations and from the edge of supporting steel at the
perimeter of the grating. We can send a marking plan for approval prior to starting fabrication.

Grating Fabrication
Most of the grating supplied by Mentis is custom fabricated to our clients requirements, this saves time on site and ensures
the integrity of the surface treatment.
Once supplied with a Grating Design drawing, our team of drafting professionals split the floor into standard grating widths
to suit our stock sheets. Standard widths vary depending on the pattern of grating selected, from the previous pages. Once
combined, by laying panels side by side with a 10mm maximum gap, the panels will form a complete floor area, like a jigsaw
puzzle. Each panel is identified with a unique mark number that is pin stamped and welded to the banding for identification.
These relate to the Grating Marking Plan we provide you, which in turn shows where each panel is located in relation to
each other.
A specialised team of fabricators, with vast years of grating experience, have access to the latest cutting and welding
equipment to produce quality and accurate grating panels. Grating fabrication also extends into the manufacture of stair
treads with a variety of anti-slip nosings.
Once fabricated, we can arrange for the grating or stair treads to be surface treated to your specification.
Generally most clients call for grating to be galvanised.
All grating fabrication is in accordance with Australian Standard 1657-2013 paragraph 3.3.

Square Bar Cleats & Yellow Abrasive Strips
For flat walkways anti slip abrasive
strips can also be used, made from
the same material as the Yellow
Abrasive Nosing on T5 and T6 stair
treads. A flat strip of Yellow Abrasive
material is bolted to the top surface of
the grating, this is done after surface
treatment and means the strips can
be replaced if required.
If the Yellow Abrasive Strips are
required, we recommend the
following spacing to ensure panels
are identical for efficient site
installation of the grating panels.
Pattern A & B
Pattern C & D
Pattern F
Square Bar Cleats are required for sloping walkways, they are welded to the top surface of the grating to provide extra grip.
The Australian Standards AS1657-2013 5.3.3 states that cleats are required for slopes between 10 and 20 degrees. Square
Bar Cleats are 10mm x 10mm solid square bar which run the full width of the walkway.

FRP Grating
Mentis FRP grating is manufactured by interlacing reinforcing glass fibre strands within a polyester resin. Gratings produced
using this technique yield a product having 25-35% (by total weight) of fibreglass reinforcement. All grating is manufactured
from a premium grade thermosetting polyester resin, thermally cured in the mould. For fire retardant protection, the resins
used are complete with antimony trioxide to obtain Class 1 Fire Rating of 25 or less as per ASTM-E-84.
Colour pigmented throughout the resin will be green . Ultraviolet inhibitors are included to meet the specifications of
UL-94-VO. Products manufactured to these specifications can expect a life rating B, or 50 years before rehabilitation is required.

Support Requirements
Grating
#1. End of loadbar support - 25mm min. (for < 50mm grating) or 50mm min. (for ≥ 50mm grating). We recommend
25mm min. or equal to the depth of grating whichever is greater.
#2. Cantilever loadbars only up to 250mm. Only recommend for panels that are properly secured down by methods
other than clipping. No cantilever is recommended in the twist rod direction.
#3. Center support required for panel clear spans greater than recommended in the loadbar deflection table.
#4. Supporting the sides of panels is superfluous.
#5. Cutouts will be adjusted to the nearest loadbar if they fall within 25mm of the loadbar.
#6. Support required for cutouts that don’t comply to #2.
#7. Support maybe required for cutouts when split.
