SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENT
XLPE PROPERTIES
Cross linked Polyethylene – (XLPE) materials are derived through processes which cause a cross-bond ing act i v i t y among convent iona lp o l y e t h y l e n e ( P E ) m o l e c u l e s . S u c hcross-bonded PE matrixes, while retaining thesame outstanding electrical properties asconventional PE, demon-strate, in this new form,vastly improved thermal and mechanicalproperties, especially with regard to hightemperatures strength.
Figure 1 represents the structure of a conven-tional PE molecule. Such molecules will, in actu-ality, comprise somewhere between 1000 – 4000 carbon atoms. By causing the formation of cross-bonds (cross-linking Fig.2) between such enormous molecules, a very tough material will result (as is the case with vulcanized rubber), where only a slight deformation can possibly occur even at high temperature. This is the reason why XLPE is superior in heat resistance.
Today, there are several methods that can be applied to vulcanize polyethylene, and any one process is selected according to the kind of cable involved. For high voltage cable, chemi-cal vulcanization is used, wherein a low density polyethylene is mixed with a vulcanizing (cross-linking) agent and heated to let the chemical reaction take place.
The thermally permissible short circuit current for a Con-ductor of specified size may be calculated from the equations below. For the purposes of calculated, the standard short circuit duration period is up to 5 sec.
1. Copper conductor
2. Aluminium conductor

OPTICAL FIBER CHARACTERISTICS

BASIC CONSTRUCTION
1. Aluminium-Clad Steel Wire (AC wire)
2. Optical Fiber Unit (OP unit)
3. Optical fiber bundle
Usually single mode (SM) optical fiber is applied forOPGW. To achieve the long distance transmission for largevolume of data, dispersion shift single mode fiber (DSF) isrecommended. Typical characteristics of optical fibers areshown in Table 1.

An OPGW combines a groundwire for shielding overhead powertransmission lines together with opticalfibers for transmission ofcommunication signals.
Advantages of OPGW
Telecommunication systems with high capacity andreliability can be obtained because the optical fibersused have low loss and increased bandwidthcompared with metallic conductors and are freefrom electromagnetic interference.
Economical systems can be achieved becausepower transmission and signal transmission arepossible simultaneously, by one transmission line.
Features of TCI's OPGW
A unique spiral-grooved aluminium-alloy spacerhouses the optical fibers in individual grooves torelieve strain during stringing and actual use and tomake tower-top handling easy.
To give the optical fibers adequate heat resistancefor use in OPGW, UV acrylate type of optical fiberbundles is provided.
45
Aluminium clad steel wire (AC wire) is generally used for the strands of outer layer of OPGW.
The merits of using AC wire are:-
High lightning resistance (comparing with Aluminium)
High Tensile strength
And Aluminium Alloy wire is also used in combination with AC wire according to the requirement.
The properties of typical types of AC wire and Aluminium Alloy wire are shown in Table 2.
Cross sectional view of AC wire is shown in Figure 2.

CURRENT RATING CALCULATION FOR ALUMINIUM CONDUCTOR STEEL REINFORCEDThe following equations can used toCalculate the current rating for ACSR.
Ws : solar radiation = 0.1 W/cm2
: Black body radiation coefficient = 0.9Ra : ac resistance of conductor, Ω/cm
Where,
1) Heat dissipated due to wind velocity,
hw = 0.005720.123273 + T + (0/2) D
W/°C cm2
: Wind velocity m/sD : Conductor diameter cmT : Ambient temperature °C0 : Permissible temp. increase °C
2) Heat dissipated due to radiation,
W/°C cm2hr = 0.000567
273 + T + 0 4
100273 + T 4

Ra = K1 K2 Rd
Where,
Rd : dc resistance of conductor converted to R at (T + 0)
Rd = Rto1+ (t-to); t = (T + 0) : Temperature coefficient at 20°C = 0.004to = 20°CRto : dc resistance at 20°C
