4 SYSTEM DUAL PROTECTION

System Dual Protection (SDP) is the

world’s only waterproof performance

clothing technology that manages inner

condensation in wet and cold conditions. In recognition of SDP’s

success, Keela was awarded The Queen’s Award for Enterprise :

Innovation 2008.

This prestigious award was given to Keela for developing

System Dual Protection after it consistently proved its worth

under the most unforgiving conditions. Originally developed

for use in Military applications, this technology has since gone

on to be successful with Tactical Forces, Mountain Rescue and

Emergency Services who require performance clothing that

works as hard as they do, all day, every day. Used extensively

here at Keela International, System Dual Protection has

become a popular choice with the outdoor community and

has subsequently been used to conquer the world’s toughest

mountain summits and survive the harshest Arctic winters.

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation is one of the UK’s most prestigious awards and recognises outstanding achievement in the categories of international trade, innovation and sustainable development.

The ProblemHave you ever wondered why you feel wet inside your waterproof clothing?

No matter which jacket you choose, whether it be the market leader or the lesser

known brand, the results will always be the same… moisture inside your jacket

after a good half hour of physical exertion. If you use a waterproof jacket frequently

and are out in all weathers you will no doubt have experienced this physical

phenomenon.

Although it may look and feel as if your jacket is letting in water, the moisture is in

fact caused by condensation which builds up inside your jacket when it rains or when

the temperature is around 14°C or below.

No matter how breathable your jacket claims to be, there is no, or very little,

breathability in cold or damp conditions. Compare it to a car windscreen on a cold day

which has to be force ventilated to clear the moisture, or when glasses fog up in the

cold or rain due to the temperature di� erence between the inside and outside.

Breathability claims are made but cannot be substantiated in the ACTUAL conditions

in which we rely on our waterproof clothing. International test standards are set

in dry conditions at temperatures of 21ºC and above. Breathability claims, based

on these standards, are far removed from the conditions in which we expect our

products to perform. This is the REAL reason behind the moisture inside your jacket.

Research by the University of Leeds has found that no fabric is breathable in cold and

wet conditions after 60 minutes.

Our Solution

■ An outer fabric, which is coated or laminated

with a breathable membrane.

■ An inner mesh lining, which has a high wicking

hydrophilic membrane laminated to it.

■ The two layers of fabric increase durability and

create an “air gap”.

■ The “air gap” provides a natural thermal barrier,

protecting against heat loss and reducing the

need for bulky layers.

■ The hydrophilic (water loving) membrane

rapidly transports moisture (sweat and

condensation) away from the body, keeping you

dry and comfortable, even in the rain.

■ These moisture-removing hydrophilic

membranes help to reduce moisture build up

on the body.

■ SDP helps to regulate the body’s temperature,

minimising shivering when inactive.

The Munro JacketKeela’s � agship jacket is capable of combating the toughest conditions imaginable. It has helped conquer the highest mountains on the planet and is used by Mountain Rescue Teams, Tactical Forces and expedition teams worldwide. The Munro jacket is everything a jacket should be! So packed with features, so robust and so cool looking, that we are hard pushed to � nd another jacket on the market to match it….Used by extreme people in extreme environments, loved by weekend winter walkers.

The Keela Munro has gained legendary

status in Adventure Travel over the last

12 years. We’ve used this jacket on a hike

across Iceland, climbing high peaks in the

Alps and the Himalaya and walks in all

terrains and conditions. The Munro

is a genuine go anywhere, do anything

item of clothing that comes with great

breathability and it dries out quickly when

wet. It’s got every feature you need and then

some – detachable snow skirt, useful pockets

and a great wired hood – would be spot on

for winter mountaineering, skiing, boarding,

hiking etc. In a line: Great all round winter

jacket – 5 stars.

Adventure Travel Magazine

The team wore the Munro Jacket as an outer layer

with the versatile Summit Top as a base layer and

the Belay Jacket as a mid layer. The team also

wore Munro Bib Pants (Salopettes). The pockets

on the Munro Jacket provided good storage for

chocolate, spare gloves, maps and other essential

equipment. The Keela system was exceptionally

warm and comfortable, keeping us well protected

from the early morning sub zero temperatures

of -15C and the wind chill effect making the

temperatures tumble to nearly -30C at sunrise and

on approaching the summit. We were all really

warm and comfortable with this arrangement with

no symptoms of overheating or inner perspiration.

On our approach toward Mera Base Camp we

were warned by other groups returning from their

summit attempt that it was the extreme cold which

was the greatest challenge. I can only say that my

team, thanks to Keela, had no such experience.

The older it gets, the better it looks! A traditional country jacket that will keep on going and going. Used extensively by bush-craft purists, the Ventile® fabric, which has conquered Everest and has been used by pilots � ying Hurricanes over the Atlantic is one of the highlights of the Falkland Jacket. Combined with our ADS laminate, the Falkland is tough, durable and almost completely silent, making it a modern day classic. Ideal for country pursuits, shooting, � shing and used extensively by survival experts, who literally live in theirs.

The long pedigree of the fabric goes back as far as the late 1930s. With

war looming, the British government thought that there would be a

shortage of � ax that was used in those days for � re hoses and water

buckets. An alternative was required and research was triggered in the

use of cottons, woven in such a way as to keep water in! And it worked.

During WWII, the research speci� cation changed. Britain depended

upon convoys carrying vital supplies, but submarine attacks of convoy

ships made the process di� cult. As home based RAF � ghter planes did

not have the range to cover, Churchill promoted the use of catapulting

expendable Hurricanes from aboard ship. However the aircraft could

not land on board so pilots were forced to bail out in the sea resulting in

many pilot deaths due to exposure. There was an urgent need for a new,

protective clothing fabric that would be comfortable in the cockpit under

combat conditions and that would also keep a pilot warm and dry in the

sea. After many trials, the scientists at the Shirley Institute in Manchester

U.K. developed the fabric called ‘Ventile’. When made into � nished

garments, life expectancy in the sea was extended from a few minutes to

20 minutes and rescue was now a real possibility. 80% of anti-submarine

pilots who fell into the sea now survived. Ventile® fabrics for RAF clothing

went into mass production in 1943 and the military association still

remains today. Garment designs have changed over the years

but you will still � nd Ventile® suits in modern

Tornado jets with the RAF and other NATO airforces.

Ventile® was the � rst truly e� ective all weather fabric whose breathability performance remains unsurpassed. Its secret lies in the uncoated and unlaminated construction. The fabrics are 100% cotton, utilising the nest, long staple � bres, only found in the top 2% of the world’s crop. After gentle spinning and doubling, the yarn is woven into a very dense Oxford weave, using up to 30% more yarn than conventional woven fabrics. The performance of Ventile® fabrics results from the properties of cotton � bres which expand when they come into contact with water. The combination of � bres, yarns and weave causes expansion in a uniform manner. This allows the interstices within the fabric to close up, preventing the further passage of water. The fabric therefore provides excellent protection against the wind, rain, snow and cold.

Extreme conditions demand extreme kit.“Our USAR team have had these Belay jackets for over a year now and I can say with some con� dence it is probably the best piece of clothing we have ever issued. The USAR team, who work outside, live in these jackets during the winter months and despite our initial concerns of them not standing up to our high abrasion usage they have lasted and stood up to sustained usage without any problems.The crowning test was during our recent deployment as part of the UK-ISAR team to Japan. Again it is fair to say we lived in these Belays for the week during sub zero conditions with only T shirts underneath. They were consistently warm and stood up under snow, sleet and rain. When they became wet they dried out quickly and were often worn at night when cold conditions demanded additional warmth over a 4 season sleeping bag. I cannot speak highly enough of this jacket’s capability and we have already purchased extras to hold as stock should we need to issue replacements.”

Rainlife is used in our range of rainwear. Rainlife 2000 uses a lightweight outer nylon with a hydrophilic coating, which makes the ideal outer skin for Multi-Activity use.

RAINLIFE 5000 uses a texturised outer with a waterproof hydrophilic coating. This delivers improved breathability and waterproo� ng for fantastic all-round outdoor performance.

System Dual Protection (SDP) uses two membranes with an air gap between. The outer, a waterproof, windproof, breathable fabric with a hydrophilic coating, protects from the surrounding conditions, while the inner layer, a revolutionary high wicking mesh, laminated to hydrophilic � lm, absorbs moisture away from the body. The waterproof, laminated inner layer acts as a one-way valve, ensuring moisture is released through the breathable outer fabric and not wicked back through to the body, reducing the build up of condensation in cold, wet conditions, keeping the body dry and comfortable. The air gap provides a thermal barrier, protecting against heat loss and aids body temperature regulation, reducing the need for layering.

Our range of � eece and insulation garments are soft and hard wearing with excellent thermal properties. Worn alone or as part

of the layering system they are an invaluable piece of kit for any outdoor enthusiast. Our

Zetland micro � eece is the lightest of our range. It provides excellent � rst layer insulation, providing warmth without weight. Our Zetland 200 is a medium weight material for colder conditions. All are made to Keela’s highest standards for washability and pill resistance.

Keela’s Active Dispersal System (ADS) range is the ultimate moisture management system. Its specially structured star yarn rapidly removes moisture away from the body, dispersing it over a large area for fast evaporation into the outside atmosphere, keeping you drier for longer. The moisture management is inherent in the manufactured construction and cannot be washed out, ensuring it lasts the lifetime of the garment. ADS also protects from the sun’s harmful rays and has a UV protection level of +40. ADS works in harmony with your body, providing maximum comfort during periods of high activity outdoor sports.

Keela’s exclusive E.S.P collection incorporates a specialised technology which has been proven to increase blood circulation, provide relief from muscle spasms and improve balance. Trailed by athletes and amateur sports enthusiasts, E.S.P technology improves performance, decreases recovery time after injury and was found to have natural rejuvenation and healing properties through use in occupational health application.

This softshell encompasses a knitted outer with a durable water repellent � nish to repel rain

and snow, laminated onto a waterproof membrane. The inner brushed lining provides a comfortable inner which provides insulation. It has inherent stretch for ease of movement. AirXsteam fabrics are designed to to reduce the number of layers needed to insulate and protect. Used as a protective outer or as an insulating lightweight mid layer, providing a high warmth to weight ratio.

AirXream Advanced is designed to minimise the number of layers needed to insulate and

protect against extreme elements. Used as part of a layering system or alone as an outershell, the durable water repellent � nish repels rain and snow while the tight weave gives excellent wind proo� ng. The textured brushed lining provides a comfortable insulating inner and the inherent stretch provides ease of movement.

The Fusion provides a heavier, warmer option for colder conditions. The � eece insulation

back traps air, providing excellent warmth. The tightly woven stretch outer face is extremely abrasive resistant but soft and � exible. The spandex yarn provides the stretch properties of this material giving excellent wearer comfort. AirXtream Fusion is also 100% windproof and water resistant.

Incredibly soft, lightweight and breathable with excellent water repellency so you remain dry, warm and comfortable, even under the

most extreme conditions. Ounce for ounce as warm as down, Primaloft micro� bres are similar in size and shape to down, resulting in nearly equal insulating performance when dry and even better when wet. Because its individual � bres are water repellent, Primaloft retains much of its ability to keep you warm, even when moisture has soaked through. Similar to the structure of down with incredible softness, Primaloft is highly compressible and easy to stu� . Its resilient � bres are quick to regain their loft to provide uncompromising insulation. Comfortable and supple, Primaloft insulation is soft and supple like down, making it an excellent choice for active outerwear. It allows unrestricted movement and its light weight makes it comfortable for extended wear.

An important part of your layering system, softshells are designed to replace the 2 layer mid and outer shell system. Keela’s AirXsteam range provides both insulation and protection from the outside elements in a single fabric...

Designed specially for the requirements of travel use, Stretch-Tec has Lycra yarns incorporated into the fabric to provide superior stretch and comfort. To � t the

demands of travel use, the fabric is easy care and needs little ironing. Its ease of movement and fast drying properties make it ideal for all year round trekking. The tightness of the weave construction also provides protection against wind. Stretch-tec Advance is a heavier, more durable version of our standard Stretch-Tec with an added mechanical “Push Pull” function. Stretch-tec protects and has a water repellent � nish to repel rain and dirt. The inner texturised fabric removes moisture.

Ventile® was the � rst truly e� ective all weather fabric whose breathability

performance remains unsurpassed. Its secret lies in the uncoated and unlaminated construction. The fabrics are 100% cotton, utilising the � nest, long staple � bres, only found in the top 2% of the world’s crop. After gentle spinning and doubling, the yarn is woven into a very dense Oxford weave, using up to 30% more yarn than conventional woven fabrics.

The performance of Ventile® fabrics results from the properties of cotton � bres which expand when they come into contact with water. The combination of � bres, yarns and weave causes expansion in a uniform manner. This allows the interstices within the fabric to close up, preventing the further passage of water. The fabric therefore provides excellent protection against the wind, rain, snow and cold.

Scu� er materials are comfortable functional materials with excellent durability and freedom of movement. Used in a range of technical clothing which holds its shape due to the elastane 4-way stretch � bre. The outer has a unique DWR (Durable water repellent) � nish, while the inner provides excellent wickability to keep you dry.
