    Wing bearing design driveshafts are character-ized by the fact that the transfer of the torqueoccurs through mechanical allowance, bymeans of keys placed on the bearing blocks.The keys are mated to corresponding slots ma-chined on the connecting fitting yokes.

    "WING BEARING" or "C - Positive type" driveshafts

    Spicer Italcardano driveshafts main feature is that torque transfer occurs throughmechanical drive, by means of keys placed on the bearing blocks .

    These keys are mated to corresponding slots machined on connecting fittingyokes.

    This feature offers great advantages for all those applications characterized bycontinuous load variations or shock loads.

    The main benefit of having bearing blocks directly connected to output flangesare:

    Extremely high flexibility of use

    Fitting for all applications with short application lengths Smaller joints working angles

    Quicker dismantling of the whole shaft (4 bolts each side)

    U-joint kits can be disassembled and replaced without dismantling thewhole shaft making field maintenance easier

    This type of driveshaft is already an established leader. A series of end fittings a-re available to facilitate its utilization.

    Coupling dimensions

    Spicer Italcardano can supply a wide range of Wing Style end fittings; these canbe also supplied semi-finished in case the customer prefers to machine the parts

    or due to broach availability. In this case it is necessary that connecting dimen-sions meet specifications listed in the table below. This allows the best workingconditions, avoiding vibrations or premature wear of the u-joint bearings. Quota-tions can be submitted upon request.

    Double centered joints are designed for high and variable angle requirements. Bydividing the angle between two coupled yokes equally at any total angle betweenzero and the maximum operating angle, constant velocity is always produced onthe driven shaft in any position.Constant velocity joint is basically two standard single-cardan joints connected inphase by a coupling yoke .A unique centering device divides the angle between the shafts into two equal an-gles.The result is constant velocity, so this CV can eliminate many vibration problems

    related to single cardan driveshafts.These vibrations can cause intermittent stress levels that exceed design limits oftransmission, differential gears or other components.In a conventional driveshaft assembly the majority of shaft mass does not operateat constant velocity and at high speeds damaging vibrations can result from tor-sional and inertial forces at moderate angularity.At high angularity and torques, these vibrations are caused by secondary coupleloads at low speeds.In either case the CV is designed to eliminate the vibration and resulting stresspeaks since the shaft mass operates at constant velocity.

    Universal joint kits used on the Spicer Italcardano range of driveshafts meet Inter-

    national standards. They may be used to connect all mechanical components ha-ving this type of connection.High quality manufacturing finishing and heat treatment processes contribute toreach increased durability.

    Cardan shaft applications and theory

    Theory regarding cardan shafts can be found in a lot of manufacturer's brochuresand it is worldwide well known among the automotive and off highway engineers.

    We decided therefore to make this brochure of very simple use by listing only themost important concepts to be taken into consideration.

    Driveshaft selection - Application form

    Later on forms for vehicular and industrial applications are enclosed, to be filledout for a correct selection/sizing.Beside a vehicle drivetrain layout should be provided with the following informa-

    tion:

    Minimum and maximum working length for each driveshaft Minimum and maximum working angle for each driveshaft Connecting dimensions to the mating components

    Besides the data of the form, in order to perform an accurate bearing life estima-tion, it is necessary to provide a "duty cycle" representing the average workingconditions of the driveshafts for such specific application.

    In order to provide a full product warranty any application must be submit-

    ted to Spicer Driveshaft by using the application forms enclosed hereinaf-ter, for a technical approval.

    Speed and deflection angle

    Driveshaft permissible speed is influenced by:

    Centrifugal force Shaft size Shaft length Balancing accuracy Angle

    Therefore max rotational speed has to be limited to a certain value (n permissible).Because of the kinematic behaviour of the center part of the driveshaft during theoperation, a certain mass acceleration moment must not be exceeded if a quiterunning is desired.This mass acceleration moment depends on angle deflection (), speed (n) and themass moment of inertia of the center part of the driveshaft.Practically a certain (x n) must not be exceeded.

    When approaching the critical bending speed, a further reduction may be considered.

    Critical bending speed

    Since the propeller shaft is an elastic rotary body it is mandatory to check the maximum criticalbending speed, which must be sufficiently lower than:

    Nc= driveshaft critical bending speed [rpm]Dm= tube average diameter [mm]L = distance between joint centers [m]

    Ncmust be considered as theoretical critical bending speed of the driveshaft, but for safety rea-sons maximum operating speed must not exceed 70% of the above calculated speed.

    Damages caused by failure due to critical bending speed can be very dangerous therefore par-ticular care has to be dedicated to this subject.

    Driveshafts balancing

    Balancing is performed to compensate mass eccentricity, therefore preventing vi-brations and overloads on downstream units as a result of centrifugal forces.

    The operation is carried out according to standard ISO 1940. Quality grade de-pends on process accuracy and repeatability which are influenced by:

    Measuring system accuracy (rigid, or soft suspension) Type of balancing machine Mounting tolerances Angular play for longitudinal direction

    All these factors together may lead to inaccuracies of up to 80%, therefore whilefactory balancing grade is G16, customer verification tests at their own rigs

    should be carried out at G32 quality.

    Installation and maintenance instructions

    Most of Spicer Italcardano driveshafts have a permanent lube sliding section (dueto an anti friction coating of the spline) which does not require re-greasing for the

    entire operating life.In case of special arrangement with spline zerk fitted we suggest to re-greasewhile the shaft is in fully collapsed position, pumping no more than 30 grams ofgrease.Service Free universal joints do not require maintenance.Re-lube u-joints need to be regreased at least every 12 months or 2000 hrs(whichever occurs first) unless unfavourable environmental conditions lead toshorten that period.

    Re-lube operating instructions

    1. Clean zerk head very carefully from dirt2. Universal joints: pump grease until it purges out of all spider bearing block

    seals3. Sliding section: pump no more than 30 grams of grease

    Grease: Lithium complex soap PAO EP2 according to spec DIN51825-KP2-K-20

    Handling and Assembling instructions

    WarningAll below recommendations must be considered only as general instructions for

    assembling, disassembling and maintenance of driveshafts: Dana Corporationshall not be liable either directly or indirectly for what has been indicated.Whoever will carry out described operations will do it by taking the whole respon-sibility of the consequence of his behaviour.

    All the above operations must be carried out by skilled and qualified personnelonly.Driveshafts are components that can cause damages and injuries to things andpersons during the operation, even if they are correctly sized and installed.Therefore end users must take all necessary precautions to prevent and avoidsuch damages by installing, if necessary, specific protections/shelters.

    HandlingWrong driveshafts handling such as shocks and impacts may cause serious da-mages and compromise correct functionality.They must be always handled horizontally by fixing with adequate ropes asshown below.Always make sure that shafts cannot fall or roll when moved and do not rest it a-gainst the sealing section of protective tube. Do not remove or damage balancingplates welded to the driveshaft.

    General assembly rulesDo not damage or tamper with components of the driveshaft as it is supplied.During assembly take all necessary precautions against accidental falls or une-xpected sudden movements of the driveshaft.

    Take care of cleaning mating faces as far as lubricants, rust, paint and dirt is con-cerned.Remove any safety wire that has been set against accidental coming out duringtransportation.Do not force with levers or other tools, especially in the universal joint area.

    Make sure to use good quality attaching hardware such as high grade fastenersas regards dimensions, surface treatment, strength and assure a correct tighte-ning torque is applied by using dynamometric wrench crosswise.Rigid (non sliding) driveshafts must be connected to a sliding flange at least oneside.

    In case of painting sliding driveshafts the area where spline seal seats must bemasked (not painted).

    Assembly - Operating instructions1. Insert keyway and pilot diameter of one universal joint into corresponding fe-

    male faces of the mating flange/yoke2. Be sure that male/female mating faces are completely coupled together to

    their final position by using a rubber or wooden hammer (see picture below)3. Insert bolts and tight at specified torque being sure that they are free of grea-

    se and dirt which could compromise clamping force to be reached.4. Repeat item 1, 2 and 3 for the universal joint at the other side.

    The metal wire which secures bearing blocks in their positions during transporta-tion has no influence on shaft functionality, therefore removal is not necessary.
