Let’s be honest: if we could we would all bike without a backpack, without any extra weight in general! A lot of mountain bikers and cyclists are almost obsessed with cutting weight to the bare minimum – and they are willing to spend quite some money on saving grams. Road bikes are fi-ne-tuned with superlight parts and we see high-end carbon mountain bikes leaning on rustic alpi-ne huts. Even most trekking and touring cyclists are experts when it comes to weight reduction. Yet there is stuff that is indispensable on a bike ride! Multi tool, spare tubes, water, energy bars, First Aid Kit… And then you have to be prepared for the elements – for sudden showers, for cold and wind. You need to bring even more essentials on extended bike trips to rather remote places. The longer (or the more challenging) the ride the more spacious the pack has to be – and the mo-re important it is to have one that lightens the load! It’s not only the rucksack’s net weight that counts. A clever construction, thought-through details and a perfect fit are even more important. A sweat soaked back, pressure points, chafing or a pack that brings you out of balance on dif-ficult terrain will ruin your tour. The right ruck-sack won’t move on the roughest rides and it will save energy – and nerves.

thE dEutEr EXtra long sErIEs

Tall people can enjoy a perfect fit with our Extra Long EL-models! Taller sportsmen and -women between 1.85 – 2 m often have difficulty finding backpacks that fit their longer backs. Our favourite Deuter backpack mod-els are available to suit taller people with extended back lengths by 6-9 cm. Overall, backpacks in the Extra Long (EL) series have also grown in terms of volume. Back systems, features and details remain the same in the EL models as they are in the standard models, however.

shorter back Women have – in general – shorter backs than men. The SL carry systems are therefore shorter than Deuter’s standard backpacks.

narrower shoulder strapswith soft edges, smaller buckles and very narrow strap extensions prevent the SL shoulder straps from chafing or putting unwanted-pressure on the chest area. Since women normally have narrower shoulders, the shoulder straps are positioned closer together to pre-vent strap slippage.

Conical shaped hip beltTo fit women’s hips comfortably the hip belt should form a conical shape when closed. This conical shape is achieved by the diagonal construction of the belts’ anchor points as well as the curved shape of the SL hip fins.

You may think that a multi trial world champion and stunt show star like Hans “No Way” Rey has seen and biked it all – but this rocky, exposed path at an altitude of 4.000 m above sea level in the remote Andes region of Argentina is so tech-nical, he has to stay all focused. Yet there is so much distrac-tion! The scenery is dramatically beautiful, a series of moun-tain ranges down to the rain forest. The way winds over nu-merous passes and peaks and there is not one person to be seen. High above the condor is circling against a clear blue sky. The beautiful, black vulture spreads its wings wide – showing a massive wingspan of almost 3 meters – and sails over the wilderness and this exotic group of people.

It’s a team of five mountain bikers: Hans Rey and his com-panions. When he ended his career in competitive sports in 1997, the trial legend decided to discover the world on his bike. He travelled to the Himalayas, rode waterfalls in Ja-maica and met up with head hunters on Borneo. “I’ve been to 70 countries – but this route is the best I’ve ever done. Not just the trail itself was fantastic – the landscape was stunning. Absolutely breath-taking,” Hans, who lives in Cali-fornia, says. So it is Argentina this time… The northwest province Jujuy was part of the Inca empire in the Middle Ag-es. One of their trade routes led from the high altitude de-sert, the Puna, all the way down to the rain forest. And this route still exists today and has been rediscovered by trekking tourists. “However, it’s still very unknown – it’s still a secret spot,” says Hans Rey. They had started in the small, ancient settlement of Tilcara, 2.500 m above sea level: Hans, Tibor Simai, a local guide, a photographer and a cameraman. On

the first day a gaucho on his horse helped the cameraman with his heavy equipment. In the end, they had to make up their way to a pass at an elevation of 4.200 m. “We spend the first night in a tiny place with one farm house. It was very special to meet the locals. We were so impressed by their simple lifestyle and they seemed so happy and content. They live from and with nature,” Hans explains. Their landlord had set up simple bunk beds in an empty room, where they cud-dled in their sleeping bags. They couldn’t just call to do the reservation since there is no phone line. The landlord had learned of the group’s visit via a special radio station.

The next day was pure pleasure. “The route led on endless crests and ridges. And just as the day closed we headed down towards the rain forest – a descent of 2.500 m.” They see condors and wild horses – and they do not meet one human being. But it was a strenuous stage: “We had been shooting photos for 12 hours without finding any source of

water where we could fill up. It was difficult to bike on tech-nical single trails only and at such a high altitude,” Hans re-members. The more challenging the situation the more im-portant it is to have the right backpack to lighten the heavy load. “I was so glad to have my Trans Alpine Pro. It’s by far the best multi-day pack I’ve ever owned,” says Hans. What he loves most? The fit! “It’s perfect! Even when it gets really technical, it just doesn’t move on your back. Super safe and super comfortable!” And Hans also appreciates the quick gr-ab access to all the gear: “The Trans Alpine Pro has many compartments and pockets – and each and every one of them has its specific purpose. It all makes sense – and makes it easy to get organised.”

They spend another night in a remote place with about ten farmhouses – it’s a three hour march to the next street. Then the mountain bikers dive into the rain forest on the third day. The Calilegua National Park with an area of almost 80.000 ha is home to toucans, hummingbirds, monkeys, jaguars and pumas. The ride on the old Inca trails ends in a small place with a big name: San Francisco – an epic trip none of the bik-ers will ever forget.

Deuter’s integrated Shield System features a multi-layer construction which minimises, or even prevents injury occuring during a fall. Mutu-ally complementary foam layers and plates combine to give comfort and maximum safety during a fall. The shock-absorbing core component is the viscoelastic SC-1* Foam. SC-1 Foam sets benchmark standards with its progressive shock-absorption function. A slow impact increase leads to the PSA back protector reacting gradually, whereas a rapid impact shock means the protector’s resistance increases progressively quick-er. The SC1 foam also features a ‘Memory Effect’ – after a deforma-tion it goes back in its original shape and can therefore be used again and again. Two layers of PE offer additional protection against sharp or pointed objects while soft foam pads guarantee carry comfort.

Super-polytex: Made from 600 den Pol-yester thread and with a thick Pu coat-ing, this multi-purpose fabric is robust and lightweight. It is most suitable for backpacks, used in average conditions to keep the weight to a minimum. “Deuter

Super-Polytex BS” is produced in accordance to the strict blue-sign standard. Same functions and durability qualities as Deu-ter-Super-Polytex.

3D-AirMesh: A 3 mm thick and therefore three dimensional Polyester mesh. The op-timum air permeability and padding effect turns it to the ideal lining fabric for back padding, shoulder straps and hip belts. It offers maximum durability and comfort.

Neoprene: Neoprene is a elastomer foam usually laminated on both sides to Nylon or Lycra to protect the surface and increase durability. We use Neoprene for hip belts that need to be flat, extreme-ly flexible and robust. The protective fea-

tures make it the ideal material for our Neon Belt and the Camera Cases. And we use its insulation qualities for our Tube Insulator

Microrip-Nylon: 210 den Nylon fabric with strong ripstop threads and Pu coat-ing. This fine, lightweight and yet abra-sion resistant Nylon is optimal for light-weight backpack construction.

Ballistic: High-density woven, Pu coat-ed Polyamide 420 denier fabric with high strength and low weight makes it espe-cially suitable for our Trans Alpine packs. Shiny finish.

ripstop 210: ultra-tigh weave, hard wearing 210 Denier Nylon. Recognisable by the very technical, shiny surface in-corporating tough Ripstop threads. This light-weight and extremely robust fabric is perfectly suited to the manufacture of

lightweight products. Top quality Pu coating. This highly techni-cal material is used for lightweight Alpine and Trekking models.

ripstop 330: His technical 330 denier Nylon material is the perfect balance between durability at minimal weight. Thicker reinforcing threads woven into it give it that Ripstop look and technical shiny surface. Top quality Pu coating. Ex-

clusively used for the Aircontact models.

pocket rip: We use this robust Ny-lon fabric in 250 den and 330 den. The lightweight fabric is durable and has a 2.000 mm water column thanks to the Pu coating.

330D Hybrid Check: A very dura-ble Polyamide material with a stylish look. The tightly woven Nylon fibres of-fer high abrasion resistance and the Pu coating provides good water protection (>1.500mm WS). The material’s check de-

sign results from the yarn’s varying surface. Despite the 330 den, the weave structure adds great stability and tear strength.

Hexlite 100: Extremely lightweight Rip stop Poly amide fabric with textured struc ture. The 100 version of the fabric is used for ultra lightweight backpacks, the 210 den fabric is used for the ACT Trails mo dels and the lightweight alpine and

bike backpacks. The reinforcement fibres woven into the fab-ric increase the tear strength and add stability to this thin fab-ric. Pu coating inside.

Hexlite 210: This lightweight 210-de-nier Ripstop Polyamide material is used for ACT Trail packs and weight optimis-ing Bike and Alpine backpacks. Thick-er reinforcement threads make it resist-ant to tears even at such minimal weight

and lend it that striking honeycomb structure. Pu coating inside.

Matrix rS 150 D: A fine, lightweight Nylon weave with silky feel. The diago-nal weave structure with ripstop function provides high abrasion resistance. The Pu coating grants excellent water resistance and makes the seams especially durable.

taffeta Carbonite: Comparable to the 190 “Deuter-Taffeta-Nylon”. Taffeta Car-bonite however, is highly waterproof due to the special carbonite Pu coating. This together with its ripstop weave for in-creased tear resistance, makes it ideal for

our waterproof accessories.

taffeta-Nylon: It is a fine weave of 190 den threads for the Deuter rain covers. Lightweight and with small packing di-mensions. The Pu coating grants excel-lent water resistance.

Wide AirMesh: Larger holed skin con-tact fabric with excellent breathability and lighter weight. 3-5 mm thick, this Polyester fabric combines durability with comfort.

Soft Air Mesh: Lining material used for back padding and shoulder straps. It is breathable and extremely abrasion resist-ant. At the same time it offers great com-fort with a soft touch on the skin, which is especially appreciated by women. We

therefore use Soft AirMesh especially for our female specific SL backpack range.

What counts? the right backpack material! Deuter is known for its durable and reliable backpacks, because we use only high qua-lity fabrics and we know which material to use on which part of the pack to create efficient performance and low weight. Our backpacks feature ripstop, abrasion resistant, colourfast, uv-resistant, quick drying, water resistant, long lasting and lightweight material. The two most important synthetic materials are made of Nylon (Polyami-de) and Polyester fibres. High-density Polyamide fabric is extreme-ly abrasion resistant in a thin layer and is more robust than Polyes-ter. It is popular due to its high performance in a lightweight layer. While Polyester doesn't absorb water and doesn’t bleach when ex-posed to uv rays. Plus the rugged Polyester fabric has a typical soft touch and is lightweight. The fabrics are specified by their thread thickness in denier (den), which is the thread weight specified over a thread length of 9,000 metres. This means that a 9,000 metre long 600 den thread, for example, would weigh 600 grams. To provide high water resistance, Deuter fabrics are coated exclusively with po-lyurethane (Pu) which is abrasion-proof, cold resistant and flexible.

YKK® zippers: The best available on the market – these top quality zippers are very robust and reliable.

Durable spring steel frame: Spring steel is extraordinarily stable and elastic. It is very durable since it springs back into its original form when twisted or turned. In a lightweight round profile construc-tion it allows a very flexible frame build. In a flat profile, it const-ructs a frame with an extremely high form stability. We use both for our Aircomfort models to give our patented ventilation mesh panel its stable tension.
