FROM GATES HYDRAULIC HOSE AND ASSEMBLIES GETTING THE BEST SERVICE LIFE

MiningSolutions

How long will a hydraulic hose assembly-last? It depends on how it’s used. Thiscatalog and other Gates literature showthe recommended limits for our assem-blies (and also the hoses and couplingsused to make assemblies). These limitsinclude installation, maintenance andconditions of use. These limits MUSTbe followed or the assembly can failresulting in personal injury or propertydamage. If you do not have this impor-tant information, you can get it at nocost from your local Gates distributoror Gates �eld representative.

Hose assemblies in use should beinspected regularly for leaks, kinks,cover blisters, gouges, abrasion andother damage. Damaged or wornas-semblies must be replaced immedi-ately. You can increase assembly life ifyou do the following:

Hose Assembly Installation –Hydraulic hose assembly installationss-hould comply with hydraulic hoserouting and plumbing standards per SAEJ1273 for the proper application of hoseassemblies.

Working Pressure – The hydraulicsystem pressure should not exceed therated working pressure of the hose.Pressure surges or peaks exceeding therated working pressure are destructive-and must be taken into account whenselecting a hose.

Minimum Burst Pressure –Burstpressures are pressures referred to inthis catalog which were intended fordestructive testing purposes and fordesign safety factors only.

Temperature Range– Do not exposehose to internal or external temperaturesexceeding the recom-mended limits.Consult additional technical data whenhydraulic �uids contain emulsions orsolutions. The �uid manufacturer’srecommended maximum operatingtemperature for any given �uid mustnot be exceeded, regardless of hosetemperature range.

Fluid Compatibility – The hydraulicassembly (tube, cover, reinforcementand couplings) must be �uid compatible.The correct hose must be used becausephosphate ester and petroleum-basedhydraulic �uids have drastically di�erentchemical characteris-tics. Many hosesare compatible with one or the other, butnot all �uids. For example, Gates G2XH,MegaTech®and C5D hoses are capableof handling phosphate ester and petrole-um-based hydraulic �uids.

Minimum Bend Radius –Do not bendor �ex hose to a radius smaller than theminimum recommended and do notsubject hose to tension or torque.This can place excessive stress on thereinforcement and severely reduce theability of the hose to withstand pressure.

Hose Size –Hose size (inside diameter)must be capable of handling therequired �ow volume. Too small an l.D.for a given volume of �ow results inexcessive �uid pressure and heatgeneration which can result in tubedamage.

Hose Routing – Restrain, protect orguide hose, with clamps if necessary,to minimize the risk of damage due toexcessive �exing, whipping or contact-ing other moving parts or corrosives.Determine hose lengths and con�gura-tions that protect from abrasion,snagging or kinking and provide leak-resistant connections.

Hose Length –Correct hose lengthshould include considerations forlength changes under pressure,machine vibration and motion, andhose assembly routing.

Hose Applications –Select the proper-hose for the application. Suction appli-cations (Gates GMV or G4H) and special�uid or high temperature capabilities areamong the applications requiring partic-ular consideration and a speci�c hose.When additional information is required,contact your local Gates representative.

NOTE: Do not use Gates hydraulichose in place of permanent piping.

Hose Shelf Life

Storage environment, along withrubber materials can vary theshelf life limit. Shelf life is di�cultto quantify as many variablesa�ect the hose. Proper storageprecautions can result inthree to �ve years shelf life. Beyond this time there canbe signi�cant service lifedecrease, depending onstorage environ-ment variables. Some variables are:

• Temperature— Hose shouldbe stored in a cool, dry areanever exceeding +100°F(+38°C). If stored belowfreezing, pre-warming maybe required prior to handling,testing and placing intoservice.

• Direct sunlight, rain,heaters or being nearelectrical equipment

• Humidity and ozone

• Oil, solvents, corrosivematerials or fumes

• Insects or rodents

• Radioactivity

• Space allowance and bends

Store hose in original container. Never stack hose too high, asits weight can crush hose atthe bottom of the stack.

Gates recommends hose inextended storage be visuallyin-spected and tested prior touse. Hose judged marginalshould be replaced to avoidpotential failure, propertydamage or bodily injury. Storehose on a �rst-in/�rst-out basis.Unusually long storage, orpoor storage environment candeteriorate hose, reduceperfor-mance and may lead to premature failure.













FOR SAFETY’S SAKE

1. Receive hands-on training withGates recommended equipment.

2. Follow current Gates operatingmanuals and crimp data.

3. Use only new (unused) Gates recommended hose and couplings with Gates crimpers.

4. Wear safety glasses.

Select and InstallAssemblies With Care1. Select proper hose assemblies

for the application. Many factorsand conditions affecting the insideand outside diameter of the hosemust be taken into account.

2. Hose assembly routing must not create an injury hazard or damagehose. Refer to the standards,regulations and directories that applyin the countries where the equipmentis sold and used.

3. Select hydraulic components sothat the application’s temperature,

pressure and bend radius do notexceed recommended componentlimits.

4. Hose must not be stretched, kinked,crushed or twisted during installationor use. Hose must not be bent toless than the minimum bend radius.

5. Use only GT7NC and GT8NC hose for non-conductive applications. For instance: cherry pickers. All otherGates hoses are electrically conductive.

6. DO NOT use hydraulic hoseto transmit high pressure gasesor steam.

Follow GoodMaintenance Practices1. Establish a program of inspection,

testing and replacement of hoseassemblies from factors including:

Severity of application.Frequency of equipment use.Past performance of hoseassemblies.

2. Only properly trained persons shouldinspect, test or service hose assem-blies. Update training periodically.

3. Document maintenance, inspectionsand testing.

4. AVOID FLUID INJECTION INJURIESFluid under pressure cancause serious injury.It can be almost invisible escapingfrom a pinhole, andit can pierce the skin into the body.Do not touch a pressurizedhydraulic hose assembly with anypart of your body.If fluid punctures the skin, even ifno pain is felt, a serious emer-gency exists. Obtain medicalassistance immediately. Failure todo so can result in loss of theinjured body part or death.

5. Stay out of hazardous areas whiletesting hose assemblies under pres-sure. Use proper safety protection.

WARNINGSerious injury, death and destruction of property can resultfrom rupture or blow-apart of a hydraulic hose assembly that is:

Damaged or worn outAssembled or installed incorrectly

Never underestimate the powerof a blown hydraulic assembly.

Evaluation of a hose and cou-pling combination requiresconsiderable impulse testing

and cannot be determined bya simple burst or pressurehold test. (1) This working pressure per BCS174 means frequent pressure surges. Qualification testing requires 100,000 impulse cycles at 133% of the dynamicworking pressure.

(2) This working pressure means very little pressure surging. BCS174 says that the internal hydraulic circuit of a roof support system represents an almoststeady-state condition with little or no dynamic loading, and hoses consequently will tolerate higher ratings. Determined by EN 853 2SN, it is theallowable working pressure under static load that approximates a 1:2.5 ratio to burst pressure. This is based on the EN specification burst pressuresand not the higher Gates minimum burst pressures listed in the table above.

Caution: Water, water/oil emulsions and water/glycol solutions must be kept below the temperatures listed in the table below,relative to line pressures.

Caution: The fluid manufacturer’s recommended maximum operating temperature for any given fluid must not be exceeded. If different thanthe above listed hose temperatures, the lower limit must take precedence. Actual service life at temperatures approaching the rec -ommended limit will depend on the particular application and the fluid being used in the hose. Intermittent (up to 10% of operatingtime) refers to momentary temperature surges. Detrimental effects increase with increased exposure to elevated temperatures.

Do NOT expose hose to maximum temperature and maximum rated working pressure at the same time.
