All carbon fiber is not created equal. There is a reason carbon fiber is com-monly referred to as “composite”—it is comprised of several elements including yarns, fiber and resin. Additionally, manufacturing techniques vary wild-ly across the industry. Think of composites like flour, eggs and sugar. Now think of Easton’s carbon fiber like a wedding cake. Anyone can mix-up the ingredients and bake a cake. But do you want just any cake at your wedding? Professional chefs know that everything needs to be perfect to make a great cake (from the ingredients to the mixing to the timing and temperature).
Easton’s industry-leading composites are a product of the best materials, the most elaborate production techniques and stringent testing. Additionally, Easton owns a leading-edge composite production facility in Tijuana, Mexico. This 65,000-square foot facility (what we call EMX) is just over the border from San Diego, California, allowing our design team to easily and routinely check production. Controlling an entire production facility allows Easton to develop new designs faster and produce much higher quality products with more innovative materials and processes than would otherwise be possible.
Easton’s testing labs offer yet another competitive advantage. Our testing area occupies an entire floor of our Scotts Valley, California, headquarters as well as large spaces in a number of Easton’s other facilities. Easton’s cycling testing program benefits from the company’s work in other sports—who else has a 200-mph baseball cannon?

100% HAND BUILT & ACOUSTICALLY TUNEDEvery Easton wheel—from the entry-level EA50 to the top-tier EC90 Aero—is 100-percent hand built and acoustically tuned by Easton-trained builders. Wheel building is as much art as it is science. High, uniform spoke tension is necessary to build strong wheels that stay true. Nothing does this better than experienced human hands and ears. It’s a painstaking process. This systematic approach to precision tensioning and truing sets the standard in the industry.
PREMIUM SPOKESUsing only top quality spokes is critical for our high tension wheel builds. We only use premium quality stainless steel spokes from Sapim™. Most of our wheels use straight-pull spokes, and every wheel gets a specific spoke type depending on intended use: straight gauge, double butted, triple butted and bladed. The smallest techni-cal detail—like a spoke nipple—can literally make or break a wheel. This is why Easton pays close attention to even the smallest components and design elements of our wheels, even on the entry level models. We design our own hubs, rims and nipples, and use the best components available.
THERMATECThermaTec™ is a proprietary brake track surface treatment that improves braking performance and reduces the effect of heat on carbon sidewalls. While most carbon wheels perform poorly under braking, Easton wheels with ThermaTec have braking consistency and modulation on par with aluminum wheels, and unsurpassed strength and durability in a carbon clincher. ThermaTec has made the EC90 SL and EC90 Aero clincher wheels the favorites of editors from Bicycling, CyclingNews, VeloNews and WIRED magazines. “The braking performance of Easton’s new EC90 SL is the best we’ve ever experienced in a carbon clincher” – Bicycling Magazine.
CERAMIC BEARINGS Easton’s R4 SL hubs—utilized on all EC90 wheels and EA90 SLX wheels—roll on premium, grade-3 hybrid ceramic, sealed cartridge bearings. Ceramic bearings roll more efficiently and last longer than standard, steel bearings. This difference will keep you rolling faster for longer.
R4 TT FRONT HUBThere’s more to aerodynamics than tall rim profiles. Our R4 TT hub—utilized on the EC90 TT (90-millimeter), EC90 TT (56-millimeter) and EA90 TT front wheels—features unique, wing-shaped end caps to improve aerodynamics. Additionally the hub flanges are closer together (effectively narrowing the frontal area). Thanks to these features the R4 TT hub’s profile is reduced by 50-percent, helping these wheels cut through wind faster with no ill effects in crosswinds.
VARIABLE NIPPLE BED TECHNOLOGYThis proprietary Easton process places more material where it’s needed to support spoke tension. Variable Nipple Bed Technology allows us to create an aerodynamic, deep dish rim—like the 90-millimeter-deep EC90 TT—that weighs less than some traditional box-section hoops!
THREADED EYELET / NIPPLETo create an airtight, tubeless seal, the new EA90 RT wheels are outfitted with our patented threaded eyelet/nipple system. This revolutionary system allows the spoke to be attached to the rim without penetrating the tire bed, elimi-nating the need for a rim strip. The secret is the nipple, with threads on the outside which thread into the eyelet in the rim, and on the inside which thread onto the spoke. The threads are left hand on the outside of the nipple, and right hand on the inside, this allows the wheel to be trued like a normal wheel, without the need for a custom spoke or spoke wrench.

Leave it to Easton—the composites experts—to create the first zero compromise carbon fiber road clincher. The EC90 SL offers the very best braking performance in carbon rims. Period. We did it with the help of our exclusive ThermaTec™ brake track treatment, available only on Easton’s composite clincher wheels. ThermaTec brake track treatment provides smooth, easily-modulated braking power and reduces heat build-up under heavy braking. Of course ThermaTec is only one highlight of the EC90 SL. The 38-millimeter deep carbon rim is molded into its final shape in one process, ensuring superior strength and impact resistance. The EC90 SL is the only com-posite clincher rim to survive tests in our laboratory for impact and fatigue resistance as well as our brake track torture test, handling temperatures up to 500-degrees Fahrenheit. Every EC90 SL is entirely hand-built and acoustically tuned in Easton’s own factory.
The tubular version of the EC90 SL takes many of the same great features and brings weight down to 1,250-grams. These wheels are strong enough to handle Spring Classics like Paris-Roubaix yet light enough to win mountain stages of the Grand Tours. The EC90 SL is the one race wheelset to have if you can have just one. THE VETERANA FEW MOMENTS WITH GEORGE HINCAPIE
George Hincapie is the most recognizable road racer in America today. The 38-year-old on the BMC Racing Team is known as “America’s Classics rider” and is a perennial favorite to win any race, from the rugged Gent-Wevelgem to prestigious Tour de France stages. Hincapie has com-pleted 15 Tours de France, and is the only teammate to as-sist Lance Armstrong in every one of his record, seven TdF victories. We caught up with our longtime favorite road racer and got to know him a little better with this Q and A.

EC90 TT The EC90 TT is the lightest 90-millimeter-deep wheelset on the market. It’s the result of our drive to create the fastest wheel possible for our sponsored road and triathlon racers. Years of engineering experience and repeated sessions at San Di-ego’s Low Speed Wind Tunnel have helped us create a wheelset that weighs just 1,440-grams and is unmatched in a wide range of wind conditions. The EC90 TT wheelset utilizes the deepest rims in Easton’s line (90-millimeters deep) and feature our proprietary Variable Nipple Bed technology which places material only where it’s needed to support spoke tension. EA90 SLX Years of obsessive refinement and careful engineering have resulted in our lightest aluminum wheelset to date. At just 1,398-grams the EA90 SLX is perfect for any ride or race that features significant changes in elevation. THE ASPIRING PROONE RACER’S QUEST TO CONQUER AT THE TOP LEVEL
Colby Weber lives and breathes bike racing. The 25-year-old California native works at a bike shop, lives with his parents, and coordinates his life around training and racing. “I’m at the point in my life where I want to take racing more seriously,” Weber states. He’s the perfect example of the rider that we had in mind when designing the new EC90 XC wheelset. Weber hand-picks every component on his race bike, from the front derailleur to the seatpost clamp. He pays for all of his parts and is not obligated to ride any specific equipment. We sat down with Weber for a minute to learn why he chooses Easton.
EC: How long have you been racing?
CW: This is my 3rd year of racing mountain bikes
EC: How many hours do you ride per week?
CW: My weeks vary from 12-18 hours of riding. Typically it’s a mix of both road and MTB.
EC: What’s your favorite XC race?
CW: My favorite race so far has to be the BC Bike Race. It’s like a whole XC race
season smashed into eight days of amazing trails.
EC: What pro XC race do you aspire to win the most?
CW: I would love to win the Downieville All Mountain title
EC: How light is your Niner race bike?
CW: Current bike weight is 21 pounds
EC: Why do you ride Easton?
CW: I ride Easton products because they are light as well as extremely tough. I race
and train on all the same parts, and with Easton parts I know they will perform.

EYELET / NIPPLEEaston’s tubeless Gen 5 tubeless rims—featured on EC90 XC, EA90 XC, EA70 XCT, Haven and Havoc wheels—uti-lize our patented threaded eyelet and nipple system. This revolutionary system allows the spoke to be attached to the rim without penetrating the tire bed, eliminating the need for a rim strip. The secret is the nipple, with threads on the outside which thread into the eyelet in the rim, and on the inside which thread onto the spoke. The Threads on the outside of the nipple are left hand, and right hand on the inside, this allows the wheel to be trued like a nor-mal wheel, without the need for a custom spoke or spoke wrench.
CASSETTE BODYEvery cassette body is machined from 7050 alloy for optimal strength. Two oversized, sealed cartridge bearings keep things rolling smoothly and a 3-pawl system contacts a 30-point gear ring for 12-degrees of engagement.
BEARINGSWe use premium grade double sealed cartridge bearings in our hubs. Why? Cartridge bearings are best for a num-ber of reasons: The friction reducing properties of a fine sealed cartridge bearing just can’t be beat, so rolling re-sistance is reduced to an absolute minimum; cartridge bearings are replaceable—easily and inexpensively; and our bearings are double sealed, so contamination is virtually eliminated. Finally, we use proprietary grease formulated specifically for bicycle wheel conditions.
BEARING PRELOAD ADJUSTERSOur bearing preload adjusters allow easy micro adjustment of the wheel bearing tension for a smooth spinning wheel and extended bearing life.
ABC™ (Armored Ballistic Composite) is much more than a marketing gimmick. ABC is Easton’s trade name for a hybrid composite material that optimizes strength and toughness without adding weight. This advanced com-posite—only used in Easton’s EC90 XC, Haven Carbon and Havoc Carbon wheels—is the single biggest contribu-tor to the strength and durability of Easton wheels. Like any composite, ABC’s strength comes from its individual components—a high-end fiber called HMPE™ and a revolutionary resin dubbed MRES-B™.
HMPE™ (High Modulus Polyethylene)The material of choice for military applications from assault helicopters to next-generation helmets and ultra light-weight body armor, HMPE is the strongest of the man-made fiber families. HMPE is Easton’s alternative to Aramid-class (Kevlar® and others) fibers in applications where a high strength-to-weight ratio needs to be combined with exceptional impact (ballistic and blast) strength.
MRES-B™MRES-class resin utilizes impact-resistant components to enhance the ballistic and blast performance of the fin-ished composite. By using MRES-B in our material and combining it with proprietary fabrication technique, Easton’s Armored Ballistic Composite (ABC) composite hybrid can achieve optimal strength and toughness with 15-20% less resin (in other words, it achieves the same durability at a lower weight).

At a mere 1,285 grams (26-inch), the EC90 XC is the lightest UST wheelset on the market. In fact these wheels are about 200-grams lighter than the closest UST competition. The EA90 XC wheelset was designed from the ground up for competitive trail riding and cross country racing. The aluminum rims are welded for an airtight UST seal right out of the box (no fussing with rim strips or sealant). And because the internal rim width is a generous 19-millimeters, these wheels easily accommodate tires as wide as 2.35”. The rims are laced with 24 Sapim double-butted spokes to a flashy set of anodized red M1 hubs and sealed cartridge bearings keep the EA90 XC spin-ning trouble free.
This wheelset is available in a wide array of axle configurations—the front wheel is available in 9x100-millimeter (standard QR) or 15x100-millimeter (QR15) and rear wheel is available in 10x135-milliemter (standard QR) or 12x135- or 12x142-millimeter—ensuring that any trail rider or cross country racer can enjoy the EA90 XC.

TAPERWALL™ TECHNOLOGYTaperWall starts with computer-modulated draw benches that create multiple thicknesses in the same tube, so the tube walls can be reinforced anywhere with incredible precision. In aluminum the result is jeweler-smooth walls that eliminate stress points (boosting strength, reducing weight and improving fatigue life). In our carbon composite components, Taperwall applies more material to wall surfaces where stiffness is paramount and less material to areas requiring more compliance. The advantage is clear in aluminum or composite: Taperwall radically enhances strength and durability, at less weight. Additionally, Taperwall produces lively, responsive ride quality and improved shock absorption.
DST™ (Distributed Stress Technology) DST reduces stem clamping stress by changing the shape of the interface between the bar, stem and faceplate. By distributing clamping forces over a larger area and moving the stem bolts away from the edge of the stem, we distribute stress more evenly along the center section of the handlebar.
TOP-LOCK™Found on all Easton stems, means that the stem body and faceplate have a corresponding shape that allows the stem to ‘lock’ on one edge when tightened. This radically changes the amount of contact area between the bar and stem, adding better grip and improving stiffness between the bar and stem interface and improved stem bolt fatigue. This lets us build lighter, stiffer and stronger stems that work better with lightweight handlebars.
INTELLIGENT FLEXIBILITYOne big advantage Easton’s carbon fiber components have over aluminum is Intelligent Flexibility. Easton engi-neers custom-tune each carbon bar and fork by strategically adding flexibility in some areas (to damp road vibra-tions and trail chatter, for example), while simultaneously adding rigidity to other areas (to boost power transfer or improve cornering). Intelligent Flexibility provides incredible rigidity when it’s time to stand up and sprint, yet yields a crisp, supple ride that will keep you fresh on long rides.
SEATPOSTS AND R.A.D.™Each and every Easton seatpost leaves our doors with a five-year warranty. How can we be so confident in the durability of such a crucial component? We engineer, analyze and test every last detail in house; we use only pre-mium materials; and we rely on proprietary technologies like Relief-Area Design (R.A.D.). R.A.D. is that flat spot that runs the length of Easton carbon steerer tubes and seatposts, corresponding with the clamp zone of stems and seatpost clamps. Removing material in these critical zones prevents clamping forces from pinching and dam-aging carbon tubing, thus eliminating the weakest point on a typical seatpost or steerer tube.

AERO VS. STANDARDEaston road handlebars are available in two options—standard and Aero. Aero basically means that the tops are wing-shaped, or tear dropped. Aero handlebars are also more aerodynamic (hence the name Aero) because the bars feature less frontal surface area.

LEANDA CAVEFASHIONABLY FAST
Since Leanda Cave turned pro in 2000, she has found victory in triathlon’s most prestigious events, including the ITU world championships and the ITU long-distance world championships. Although the 33-year-old grew up in Great Britain and Australia, Cave currently resides in Tucson, Arizona. Training in the sunny, desert climate is obviously suiting Cave very well—she recently won the Wildflower Triathlon, one of the most popular events on the U.S. tri circuit. We spent a few moments catching-up with Cave just before Wildflower:
EC: How many days/months of the year do you spend away
from home?
LC: It’s normally around eight months at home and four
months away during the summer when it tends to get
too hot in Tucson. I do go away for up to two weeks
during that eight months to race venues (if there are a
few races on the East Coast for instance).
EC: Where is your favorite place to train?
LC: Home. I just love being home. Torsten and I bought
our house here in Tucson, Arizona, last year and we are
so blessed to have such great training facilities right
out our door.
EC: What’s your favorite triathlon?
LC: There are actually many. Normally if I win a race, it
becomes one of my favourites! But I would say
Escape from Alcatraz has to be high up on the list as
I have won it 3 times!
EC: Have you ever done any road races or criteriums?
Marathon racing? How is triathlon different?
LC: I had a number of injuries early in my career as a
triathlete and so I took to road and criterium racing. I
was actually quite successful as a cyclist and placed top
three in major bike races around the south of Queensland,
Australia. I have never raced a full marathon outside of
triathlon, but I have done a few half marathons. It’s
actually quite funny because I always feel better biking
and running during a triathlon than when I do them
individually. It’s like I need a swim to warm my legs up!
EC: How have Easton wheels and components given you
an advantage racing elite triathlons?
LC: My Easton wheels are amazing. I haven’t had such great
results on any other wheels. They are most of all light
weight and aero without losing any stiffness and that is
so important. The components are equally important.
I want to have the lightest bike possible, and the Easton
components are very light without compromising
performance. Best of all they look good (I’m a chick... I
like my stuff to look good!).
EC: What would you be doing if you weren’t a
professional athlete?
LC: I’d be designing high-end fashion for one of the top
fashion houses in the world.

ALL MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE RIDING AND RACING IN THE PERUVIAN ANDES
Easton Cycling’s Ali Goulet and Dain Zaffke recently escaped the confines of the typical work week and went on a field trip to Peru. The main objective of the trip was to race the Inca Downhill (a Megavalanche-style, mass-start downhill plunge with more than 5,000-feet of vertical drop), but they discovered that the Peruvian Andes are an ideal destination for rugged All Mountain riding. With local guides, the pair packed a lot into a short week. “We visited a remote Que-chua schoolhouse at 12,000-feet and delivered groceries for the kids to bring back to their families; we went to Machu Picchu; and we did an epic, six-hour out-and-back ride complete with a traverse over some recent mudslides where one false step would have meant certain death (literally),” Goulet stated. “We logged a lot of miles on ancient, Inca trails. And the race was a blast.”
The Inca Downhill turned out to be about as foreign to the Easton duo as the Quechua language spoken in the highlands. The race comprised of three runs (two race runs, and one qualifying run). Each run began at nearly 15,000-feet above sea level, with a 150-rider, mass-start sprint down a steep and rocky, gla-cial moraine field. There were sections of taped-off singletrack, but the entire mountain was free game, including steep hillsides and a paved highway. With no trail in sight on the upper course, the group was fanned-out 25-riders across with each racer fighting for position going into the tight singletrack. When the dust settled, Zaffke and Goulet were the two top Americans finishing in 4th and 10th place in the elite downhill. “There were a lot of fast riders there, from all over the world,” Zaffke said. “But I managed to avoid the crashes and didn’t have a single mechanical and that alone gave me a big advantage.”

Sam Blenkinsop has been making headlines in elite downhill racing since he turned pro in 2006. The humble 22-year-old from New Zealand already has one world cup victory to his credit, and he seems to be getting consis-tently faster with every race. We spent a few moments catching up with “Blinky” to see what makes him tick.
EC: How many days/months of the year do you spend

SB: The time away from home is mostly five to six months
a year. This year it’s just four months so it’s a bit shorter.

SB: I found the wheels are nice and light and fast rolling,

pit. I like the feel of the bars. It’s good to have a good
feeling bar ‘cause that’s what your hanging on to.
EC: What’s with the pet goat?
SB: The goat was just a friend’s. We had it at my house for a
few weeks, just to eat the weeds and stuff in my backyard.
EC: What do you like to do aside from downhilling?
SB: When I’m at home I like to try ride moto like twice a
week. I also like going out on the jet ski and just chilling
with my mates.
