2. What does chipless cold-forming really mean?
In this process, the component material is stressed beyond its yield
point, being deformed plastica lly, and, thus permanently. In the
profiling proces s, the g rain structure o f the m ate rial is, unlike cut-
ting, d isplac ed, not removed. This proces s c an b e readily seen on
the micrographs to the right, illustrating thread s formed and rolled.

3. What Economic Advantages does the Rolling Process offer?
extremely s hort ma chining time
long service life of tools
full utilisation of the machine
simple o peration
Rolling s pee ds , ra nging from 2090 m/min. (60270 S FM) a reconsiderably higher than the cutting speeds used in thread cutting
operations. When cutting with thread chasing heads speeds rarely
exc eed 10 m/min. (30 S FM). Thus wh en us ing threa d rolling pro-
cesses the net thread rolling time will never be the deciding factor
in the w ork cycle.
Please refer also to the practical examples on pa ge 19.
To g ive ano ther exa mple: Thread ing a 5/8" UNF, 0.748" long on a
ca st s teel journal. The time to threa d c ut wa s 4.8secs per piece. However, when rolling wa s p erformed only 0.8 secs were requiredwith an a xial-type rolling he ad and 0.2 secs with an radial-type(see Fig. 4). For a ny thread rolling proces s performed w ith Fette
atta chments the long too l life of the threa d rolls g ives very low too l
costs . (See examples below).
The we ll designed Fette thread rolling hea ds are co mpa ct units
need ing a rota ry motion in order to funct ion properly. To mee t tha t
requirement simple turning lathes will suffice. But these rolling
heads ca n also be used on turret lathes, a utomatic lathes and CNC
lathes, giving thread production without problems on any workpie-
ce, a ble to be ac comod ated in the machine, in a s hort part of the
total cycle time.
The thread rolling sta rting d iame ter is no t a s in thread cutting, iden-
tica l with the outside (major) diamete r of the thread , but is the pitch
diameter of the thread. With many workpieces this means a consi-
derable saving on material, especially if the material has been
drawn to the pitch thread d iameter when it ca n be used immedi-
ately. No cutting process takes place and no bothersome c hips a re
produced with the thread rolling o peration.

4. Welche technischen Vorteile bietet das Rollverfahren?
hohe P rofilgena uigkeit
hhere Festigkeit des Gewindes
pressp olierte Ge windeflanken
hhe re Versc hleifest igkeit

4.What technical advantages are offered by the Rolling Pro-cess?
A high d egree o f profile acc uracy
A stronge r threa d
Burnished thread flanks
Improved wear resistance
The inherent tens ile a nd fa tigue strength under reversed bend ing
stresses are basic to the uninterrupted structure. Micrographs
(P ag e 9, Fig. 1, 2, a nd 3) show distinctly how the ma terial grain fol-
lows the threa d profile.
The b urnished thread surface with a roughness level of below 5 m
improves resistance to corrosion and reduces abrasion within the
thread. The w ork hardened flank provides increas ed s urfac e tens i-
le, yield, and shear strength. Due to pressure deformation, a resi-
dual compressive stress system builds up at the thread root, which
counteracts tensile loading.
When compared to a cut thread, the load capacity of the rolled
thread is increas ed b y 612 %. P lea se refer also to Fig. 5, 6, and 7.

5. Which Fette thread rolling heads are available?
With its versatile thread rolling head program, offering axial, radial
and tangential-type thread rolling processes, Fette can satisfy
almost any thread rolling requirement.
Axial type thread rolling
Axial-type thread rolling he ad s us ually c onta in two o r three, b utin spe cial ca ses up to s ix threa d rolls. They c onsist of a nnular
grooves ground o n the pe riphery of the rolls.
The rolls revolve around t heir horizonta l a xis feeding the co mpo -
nent a xially one pitch per rotation into the hea d (see Fig. 8.a).
As the rolls a re moving axially a long the c ompone nt a ny required
length of thread ca n be ma nufac tured.
An a dditional significa nt a dvantag e is, that the component ca n
sta nd s till, while the rolling hea d is moving a round.
As w ell as the rolling he ad ca n sta nd s till, while the c ompo nent is
turning.
The rolling hea d ca n be mounted universally on the longitudinal
carriage, the turret, the spindle or tailstock of standard and auto-
matic lathes.
Radial type thread rollingIn rad ial-type thread rolling one mus t differentiate betw een tw o
versions.
Type E g enerates the thread being po sitioned by traversing a xially
over the c ompone nt, (see Fig. 8c). The thread is p roduced in one
single revolution of the rolls. The threa d rolls a re put in co nta ct a nd
radially penetra te into the co mponent. The ma ximum thread length
is restricted by the width of the roll.
The extremely short mac hining time for the thread is a great ad van-
tage. Production of threads having an extremely short thread run-
out is also feasible. Mounting possibilities for the (E-type) rolling
head are s imilar to tha t of the a xial-type thread rolling he ad .
Type EW funct ions like type E, but it fea tures a utoma tic initiation of
the rolling process started by contact of the workpiece with a trig-ger mecha nism.
Tangential-type side rollingThe ta ngential-type side-rolling atta chme nt is eq uipped with two
opposed thread rolls, w hich a re traversed towa rds the component
at 90 to its axis. During the progress ive feed, it forms the thread
mainly in a tangential direction (Fig. 8d).
The forming proces s is c ompleted, in general, when the c enter line
of the roll meets the c enter line of the c ompone nt. This situation is
usually reached after 15 to 30 contact revolutions of the compo-
nent. Ta nge ntial and rad ial-type rolling, s uch a s Type -C, offer simi-
lar ad vanta ge s. There is no relea se me cha nism in the tange ntial
side rolling p roces s. Tang ential-type rolling he ad s c an be conven-iently mounted on the cross-slide o f screw ma chines and automa-
tic lathes a nd CNC lathes.

jeglicher Art erzeugt werden.

fhrung praktisc h fast unbe grenzt anw endb ar.
In vie-

maschine mit Durchlaufeinrichtung kann Stangenmaterial sogar
mit endlosem Gewinde gerollt we rden. Auch d as Ge winderollena n Hohlkrpern, z.
eingefhrten Dorn a bges ttzt. Die Res twa ndstrke zwischen
Gewindekern- und Rohr-Innen- sollte allerdings nicht unter
0,5 mm + halbe G ew indetiefe liegen.
6. What Types of Threads can be rolled?
Almost all the normal types of threads can be rolled. Such as paral-
lel and tapered V threads, knuckle and half knuckle threads, par-
allel type wood screw threads and in certain circumstanc es butt-
ress thread s. Flank angle s hould no t be less than 10 . Within this
range of c onditions a ny spec ial shaped thread ca n be rolled.
Diameters may be rolled between 0.055" and approx. 9.055".
7. Where else can Fette Thread Rolling Heads and Attachmentsbe used?
Assuming that axially parallel grooves are regarded as being
threads with infinitely large helix angles, one can understand that
knurls, serrations, a nd similar c onfigurations are rollab le. Re ga rd-
less of w hether they a re axially pa rallel, right or left hand ed helica l

as for hose connections a nd c ouplings can also be rolled.
Surfaces of cylindrical components can be burnished with burnis-
hing rolls, a nd pipe ends c an b e reduced, beveled or swa ged withprofiled rolls.
Cylindrica l components ca n also b e ma rked w ith any type of
inscription, symbols and company marks.
8. What Types of Material can be rolled?
As the ma terial w ill be p las tically d eform formed b y press ure, it
should have a minimum elongation of 5 % and a tens ile strength of
1700 N/mm2/246.000 P SI sho uld not be e xceed ed.
Structural steels, ca se hardening s teels, s tainless steels and heat
treata ble stee ls w ithin thes e limits are s uitab le for rolling, as are
soft brass, copper and aluminium.
Not suitable would be materials that have less than 5 % elongationlike c as t iron, ha rd bras s a lloys and other hardene d ma terials. The
consistancy of the respective component material will have a cer-
tain influence upon the tool life of the rolls. You will find more infor-
mation in the Technica l Manua l Cata log ue.
9. What other Properties are expected from the component?
As far as the configuration of the component is concerned, the
thread rolling proces s ca n b e e mployed virtually w ithout restriction.
Provided, of c ourse, the c omponent ca n be c lamped and position-
ed properly, and the rolling head can be brought into the correct
machining position. In many cases one will have an option to either
have the rotary motion performed b y the hea d or by the compo-nent. Threads c an a lso be rolled on automa tic sc rew mac hines, for
examp le on b ars, w orking b ehind a s houlder, prior to c ut off the
com ponent. When using a rolling hea d o n a Fette rolling mac hine
which is eq uipped with a feed-through a ttachment, b ar ma terial
ca n be rolled w ith an unlimited leng th. The rolling of thread s on
tubular parts, suc h as pipe, is fea sible in ma ny ca ses . When rolling
thin-walled pipe, thes e ca n be s upported b y an a rbor. The remai-
ning wall-thickness left between thread root diameter and inner
pipe diame ter, should not be less tha n 0.020" + one ha lf the depth
of thread however.

10. On which Machines can Rolling Heads be used?
As fa r as the rolling o peration is co ncerned , the o nly requirement is
that e ither the co mponent o r the rolling he ad or both a re rota ting
towa rds one another. Rolling head s c an be used on a ny type of
lathe, drilling machines, and automated lathes including CNC auto-
matic lathes.
Certain req uirements, such as mac hine pow er, torque, and speeddepend on the type of rolling to be done and the selected rolling
head design. Please refer to pa ges 20 and 21 to the explana tory
notes for the individua l rolling sys tems .
11. What advantage do thread rolling heads offeron CNC machine tools?
Fette thread rolling heads are also working on NC and CNC machi-
ne tools with efficiency and economy. All known classical advan-
tage s of the Fette thread rolling sys tem ca n be use d w ithout any
restrictions.
Fette thread rolling heads help to reduce expensive CNC machi-
ning time, as the thread s a re produced in sec onds and in only onepas s, w hereas the CNC thread c utting requires numerous c ycles.
The extreme ly high lifetime of thread rolls c omp a red to a s ingle
point tool meets todays requirements for lowest personal efforts in
setting up and operating the C NC mac hine.
The ad vantage of a c hipless cold formed thread c ompared to a cut
thread with a single point tool is very often used to produce a
smaller component or to reduce work piece weight. In this case,
thread rolling is a necess ity. S uch co mponents c an be completely
machined with the use of Fette thread rolling heads on CNC equip-
ment. A second clamping or the rolling of the component on a
separate thread rolling machine is therefore not necessary.
Fette thread rolling he ad s c an b e eq uipped with sha nks (DIN 69880
draft) with s hanks similar to VDI or as per cus tomer requirements .
Further details of the use on CNC machines such as proper feedrates, closing of hea ds or presetting o f heads ca n be s een in the
correspond ing p arag raphs in the Axial pa rt.
12. What Power Requirements are necessary for rolling?
In general, the pow er req uirements for threa d rolling a re less than
the capacity for modern machine tools. In special cases, the rolling
procedure requires an estimate of necessary power.
With the Axial-method, threads are progressively formed along theaxis of the workpiece. In this way the thread length is formed prac-
tica lly without influenc e of the nec es sa ry drive pow er. With rolls for
threads courser tha n 20 TP I or 2 mm/0.079" and for trap ezoida l
and Acme profiles, the formula should be used. The Radial-method forms a co mplete thread in a s ingle revolutionof the rolls. This also produces a moment of high torque require-
ments on the ma chine, so it is recommended that the torque and
drive power be calculated. It is also very important that the compo-
nent to be rolled is securely clamped.
With the Tangential-method, a thread is formed within 1530 revo-

ob erflc he in Mete r pro Minute (v = m/min).
St hle. Hhe re Werksto ff-Festigkeiten be dingen da geg en kleinere
Rollgeschwindigkeiten.
Da be i dem Axia l-, Ra dial- und Ta nge ntial-Rollverfahren d urch die
unterschiedlichen Be arbeitungse inrichtunge n jeweils and ere Ab-
hngigkeiten zwischen Drehzahl, Gewinde-, Gewindesteigung,
Ge windelnge , Vorschub , Rollges chw indigkeit und Rollzeit beste -hen, w ird hierzu Nhe res bei den einzelnen Abs chnitten ang eg e-
ben:
a ) Axialrollen: ab Se ite 24 empfohlene Rollges chw indigkeiten2060 m/min, evtl. auc h b is 90 m/min. Da be i bes timmen Ro llge -
zeit bzw. Bearbeitungszeit.
b) Radialrollen: ab Se ite 252 empfohlene Ro llgesc hwindigkeiten2060 m/min.
zeiten extrem niedrig.
13. Which rolling system and which type of rolling head shouldbe used?
The se lection c riteria a re compiled o n pa ges 20 and 21 depe nding
on the ma chine a vailable, subject to the type of the c omponent
and to the length of thread to be rolled. It must first be decided,
whethe r an a xial, radial or tange ntial side type rolling he ad should
be used. P ag e 19 shows various components w ith a note as towhich rolling s ystem is pa rticularly recomme nded for a ce rtain
thread rolling p roces s.
Conditional to the s ize a nd type o f the thread that is to b e ma chi-
ned, the rolling hea d a nd the size to be used c an b e determined
from the individua l tabulated cha rts.
We wo uld b e pleas ed to provide yo u with add itional technica l and
price information on reques t.
14. What kind of coolants and lubricants have to be used?
Conventional cutting fluids are normally suitable for rolling appli-
ca tions. For insta nce emulsions having a 1:10 to 1:20 dilution a re
commonly used, some times with high pressure additives likewiselow viscos ity c utting oils. High pressure a dd itives will reduc e fric-
tion between rolls and components, thereby increasing the tool life
of the threa d rolls.
Please consult us if dry machining is needed.
15. Which cycle times may be expected?
In cold forming o perations, extremely short cyc le times are not just
a w elcome attribute, but rather a condition of the process. B eca use
in plastic deforming the material must be caused to flow, and, in
this c as e, higher rolling s peeds are better than low s peeds.
Rolling s peeds are obta ined s imilar to c utting s peeds . S FM or
m/min can be ca lculated using the blank diameter of the thread tobe rolled.
Ba sica lly, Unified a nd V-type threa ds c an be g enerated at higher
rolling s peed s tha n Acme , Trapezo ida l threads , as these have large
masses of deformation to cope with. On the other hand, the rolling
speed for materials with a higher coefficient of elongation can be
higher tha n for mate rials w ith elonga tion values at the lower limit of
5 %. Higher ma terial strengths require lower rolling spee ds .
In the axial, rad ial and ta ngential side rolling proces s, d ifferent re-
lationships are found to e xist b etween speed, thread diameters,
pitch of thread , length of thread , feed , rolling s peed and rolling
time. More information on these fac tors is presente d in individua l
sections of this c ata log.

(60 SFM to 180 SFM) pos sibly to 90 m/min. (270 S FM). C ompo -
nent diameter and RP M along with the thread pitch a nd length
of thread govern cycle time.
b) Radial rolling:from pag e 252 Reco mmende d rolling spe eds are
2060 m/min. (60180 S FM). S ince the rad ial rolling ope ration is
performed in only one revolution of the roll, rolling time is extre-

c) Tangential side rolling:from page 304 Recommended rolling speeds are 20
80 m/min. (60240 S FM). The c ontrolled feed req uired in this
operation, must provide that the rolling operation is c ompleted
within 1530 revolutions of the component. Within 5 to 7 addi-
tional component revolutions, at the most, the attachment is
moved in rapid reverse travel out of the engagement position.
Rolling times of only a few seconds or even fractions of a second
are a n es sential feature of this thread rolling process , which is
always of great ad vantage economically. Close tolerances a re
easily maintained.
