SCITEC 2011 Working Team

The Beijing-Italy Week for Science, Technology, Economy and Culture is a consolidated eventwhich supports scientific, technological and entrepreneurial exchanges and relations betweenItaly and Beijing.SciTEC 2011 brokerage event is part of the Sino Italian Exchange Event – SIEE; it is based onthe collaboration agreement among CNR - National Research Council of Italy, IDIS Foundation- City of Science, BAST - Beijing Association for Science and Technology in December 2010. Thisinitiative was born and developed from a strong relationship between the Campania Regionand the Municipality of Beijing. The strong Italian and Chinese partnership’s enhancement involves other national researchbodies and on the Chinese side, bodies of primary importance in the development of innovativecircuits, Italy-China joined the SCI.T.E.C. Week such as ENEA, INVITALIA, ISPRA, GSE and thegeneral goals of the SIEE program.Since the 2011 edition, the cooperation program has come into a new phase, thanks to thecollaboration between Fondazione IDIS and the European Enterprise Network – EEN, a networkof excellence set up by the European Union, which the Department of Cultural Heritage of CNRis one among the 60 Italian contact points. Each EEN partner helps small companies to makethe most of the European and international marketplace by means of searching of internationalbusiness partners and new technologies and facilitating the access to the EU funding or finance.Cultural heritage and tourism, Urban sustainable development, ICT, Environment , New energies,Saving and life science, Biomedicine are the main cooperation areas which will join 5th Beijing-Italy week for Science, Technology, Economy and Culture; these sectors represent Italianexpertise highly qualified and appreciated at international level.The 2011 means an important step for the Italian cooperation program with Beijing: theagreement signed in April 2011 between Foundation IDIS - Città della Scienza and the BeijingScience and Technology Consulting Centre, thanks to their Cooperation Office in Beijing whichsupports the actions of the projects, aims at the creation of a strong network dealing withqualified services supporting enterprises and research Institutes both Italian and Chinese.“Italy-Beijing Platform”, is able to promote collaboration opportunities, to select and givetechnical assistance on specific projects, to guarantee qualified and reliable expertise fortechnological and commercial initiatives; it will be the next target to become true since 5thBeijing-Italy Week.The operating bureau of Città della Scienza in Naples and in the Cooperation Office inBeijing,supported by web applications, will lead to implementation of a market-place, bothmaterial and virtual, which will be able to support the development of investments andexchanges between Italy and China.In the 2012 the organization of a new edition of Italy-China week is expected, with a programfull of events, integrated and coordinated initiatives among different Italian regions and cities.This program aims at the consolidation and expansion of the Campania Region initiative, whichis interested in the creation of positive relations and contexts in China for enterprises and bodies.

National Research Council of Italy

The National Research Council (CNR) is a public organization; its duty is to carryout, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors

of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic andsocial development of the Country.

The Department of Cultural Heritage Following a recent re-organisation, the National research Council of Italy plays a new role inthe field of cultural heritage knowledge and conservation. Through a scientific networkcharacterized by the integration of different expertise of Cnr, the Department of CulturalHeritage aims at creating fruitful synergies among philological, historical, archeological studiesand scientific and socio-economical ones. Such innovative approach allows the study of theheritage in all its aspects: from knowledge to diagnosis, from restoration to conservation, fromvalorization to management. In this context, Department of Cultural Heritage is a managementunit with the task of planning, coordinating and verifying research actions and results of CnrInstitutes involved in the study of cultural heritage in order to increase the value of eachoutcome. At National level DPC aims to be point of reference and place of discussion on allmatters and aspects concerning the cultural heritage that companies, institutions and otheroperators have to face with.

Activities and projectsThe network of know-how and skills of DPC aims to:• enhance and integrate interventions of conservation and valorization of the heritage in

national and international co-operations• promote researches, develop skills and strategic actions for knowledge, diagnosis,

conservation, valorization, fruition and management of the cultural heritage, with particularregard to the Mediterranean area

• participate to and encourage the development of a socio-economic integration policy of thecultural heritage, in line with the European Union directives, so to increase and strength theinfluence of the country at international level.

The main projects of DPC refers to:• the historical knowledge of good and its position in reference to space and time• archeometric study of the heritage made of different matter• diagnosis of the state of conservation• information technologies for conservation and restoration• scientific techniques and procedures • culture and landscape.

ENEAThe Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and SustainableEconomic Development

ENEA, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable EconomicDevelopment is aimed at research, innovation technology and advanced service in the field ofenergy, particularly in nuclear energy, and sustainable economic development.

ENEA has the role of national agency for energy efficiency, in compliance with the EU directive2006/32/CE on energy end-use efficiency and energy services, and gives technical support andconsultancy to the Government, the Regions and local authorities, providing information tocitizens, business and public administration.

ENEA carries out research and development activities in its own facilities, which are equippedwith the most advanced instrumentation and plants: 9 Research Centres and 5 Researchlaboratories, where activities for other Italian science institutes and private companies can alsobe hosted. Finally, ENEA has a network of local offices throughout Italy and a RepresentativeOffice in Brussels.

Beijing Association for Science and Technology

Founded in July 1963, Beijing Association for Science and Technology(BAST),isa organization for science and technology staff in Beijing area, with morethan 330 societies, foundations, country and district-level associations for

science and technology, grass-roots organizations as well as 400,000 members.Over the past decades, BAST has developed rapidly and formed sound organizational system,recruiting a great number of science and technology elites. BAST has achieved remarkableprogress in booming the popularization of science and technology, cultivating the science andtechnology talents and promoting the integration of S&T and economy. Thus BAST has a greatinfluence on capital sci-tech circle and the pubic. As a bridge and link in connecting the partyand the government with the science and technology staff, BAST plays a significant pole inpromoting the development of science and technology.

BEIJING MUNICIPAL COMMISSION OF COMMERCE (BJMBC)

As a component of the Municipal Government, Beijing Municipal Commission of Commerce isresponsible for domestic and foreign trade and international economic cooperation of Beijing.It is also known as Beijing Municipal Government Ports Office.

Main Mandate of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Commerce1. To formulate development strategies of domestic and foreign trade and international

economic cooperation, draft local rules and regulations governing domestic and foreigntrade and international economic cooperation, propose and organize the medium and long-term plans and annual plan of domestic and foreign trade and international economiccooperation.

2. To formulate development strategy of domestic trade, study on and put forth proposals onreforming the commercial distribution system, formulate guidelines for the layout of thekey facilities in retailing. Wholesaling and distribution, promote the restructuring of thecommercial distribution sector and improve of such modern distribution modalities as chainstore operation, modern logistics and ecommerce; monitor and analyze market situationand commodity supply and demand, organize the adjustment of market supply of mainconsumer goods and government reserve; formulate the plan for emergency; improve thedevelopment of urban and rural markets.

3. To research, formulate and organize the implementation of the guideline for the majorfacilities of the city’s service sector related to daily life: coordinate the planning andconstruction of the city - level central business districts, specialty shopping streets andassorted commodity market places; regulate the service sector related co daily life.

4. To research, formulate and organize the implementation of the plans for such special sectorsas auction, impawning, leasing, trade of second-hand goods and recollection of recyclablegoods.

5. To administer the work of import and export commodities, trade in technology and contractsof processing of the city; to verify the tax rebating of various import and export enterprisesin Beijing: to supervise the public biding of import electromechanical products; to guide thework of foreign trade promotion as well as the establishment and development of exportprocessing zones.

6. To study on and put forth policies concerning the foreign economic cooperation of the city;be responsible for multilateral and bilateral economic and technical aids of the city: beresponsible for the work of overseas contract projects and labor cooperation; to steer thework of overseas investment.

7. To study on the development strategies of foreign investment utilization, to put forth andorganize the implementation of long-term and annual plans, be responsible for theadministration work of foreign investment, to steer the work of foreign investmentpromotion, to strength the economic cooperation and exchanges between Hong KongSpecial Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region and Taiwan region.

8. To institute a fair trade warning mechanism for import and export, to organize industryinjury investigations, to coordinate the work pertaining to antidumping, countervailing,safeguard measures and other issues related to fair trade for import and export, to beresponsible fur the coordination work related with the World Trade Organization.

9. To draft local laws and regulations governing port, to study on and put forth port developmentplan and policies and organize the implementation, to be in charge of the port work.

10. To guide and promote development for the associations, societies and social intermediaryorganizations relating with domestic and foreign trade.

11. To undertake other assignments entrusted by the city government.

Zhongguancun Science Park Management Committee

Zhongguancun Science Park Management Committee ( referred to as theZhongguancun Administrative Committee ) is responsible for the ZhongguancunScience Park ( including Haidian, Fengtai, Changping Park, Electronic City,

YiZhuang, DeSheng Park, Shijingshan Park, Yonghe Garden, Daxing Bio Pharmaceutical IndustryBase, Tongzhou Park )to guide the development and construction of a comprehensive municipalagency.

Main responsibilities:1. Implement the relevant state laws, regulations and policies, research and develop the park’s

development strategy and planning involved in organizing the preparation of park space-related planning, organization and research park-related reform, promoting sustainabledevelopment.

2. The development of park development and management policies, the drafting of local lawsand regulations related to the draft, draft government regulations.

3. Coordinate and integrate various types of innovation resources, innovation andentrepreneurship to carry out the park, high-tech R & D and industrialization, technologyfinance, human resources, intermediary organizations, intellectual property protection andother aspects of promotion and services.

4. The responsibility for managing municipal finances allocated special funds for thedevelopment of the park, and to assist relevant departments to supervise use of specialfunds.

5. Authorized by the Municipal Government of Beijing Zhongguancun Development GroupCompany Limited municipal financial investment funds to meet funding responsibilities,according to its state-owned assets supervision and management, and strengthen itsoperational guidance.

6. To guide the work of the park, take Zhongguancun National Innovation Model the dailywork of the district leadership team, responsible for the various associations within the parkliaison.

7. To carry out international exchanges and cooperation in the park, raise the level ofinternational development of the park.

8. Bear park foreign affairs, publicity, liaison work.9. Undertake other tasks assigned by the municipal government.

Fondazione Idis-Città della Scienza

The activities of IDIS have been lasting for more than twenty years; they focus, nowmore firmly than ever, on the dissemination of scientific culture by promoting socio-economic development: and this is the peculiarity that distinguishes it from othersimilar realities and that make Città della Scienza of Naples a unique model on the

international scene. Città della Scienza is a complex system that includes a Science Centre, aBusiness Innovation Centre, with an Incubator for new enterprises, an Innovation and TrainingCentre and a Meeting and Congresses Centre.

The Science Centre: is the first interactive science museum in Italy, an educational tool for thedissemination of scientific and technological culture in order to stimulate the visitor’s will tounderstand the scientific phenomena through an innovative methodology.

The Business Innovation CentreThe Business Innovation Centre aims at the support of the innovations processes anddevelopment of Campania Region, both by promoting the birth and the development of newenterprises and encouraging innovation processes and local development.

The Innovation and Training Centre is the operational area of Fondazione Idis-Città della Scienzawhich provides for innovation and sustainable development processes within the economic andproductive regional sector; it supports the creation and development of new businesscompanies to facilitate innovation and economic processes and to promote the local area in aEuropean dimension.

The cooperation program “China-Italy Innovation Bridge” wants to be a “bridge” for aninnovative system between Italy and China through two points of access: Città della Scienza inNaples and Beijing Association for Science and Technology in Beijing.The new program – which improves the collaboration between Campania Region and Beijing,operating since 2006- is based on the letter of intent, signed by Fondazione Idis, the NationalResearch Council and the Beijing Association for Science and Technology (BAST) on December2010 , which aims at:Promoting the collaboration among scientific, technological, commercial, cultural and touristicareas, as well as among other reciprocal sectors of interests.Improving exchange activities in research and university sectors, through the mobility of theresearchers and the promotion of the scientific and technological cooperation.Promoting new technologies in Cultural Heritage (Virtual Museum, preservation anddevelopment), according to the Agreement Protocol signed by the Italian Ministry of CulturalHeritage and the Chinese Ministry of Culture in 2010.

Beijing Science & Technology Consulting Center (BSTCC)

Established in 1991, Beijing Science & Technology Consulting Center(BSTCC), which ratified by Beijing municipal government, is an independent legal entity directlysubordinated to Beijing Association for Science & Technology (BAST).

BSTCC Development Orientation• Develop the overall superiority to upgrade the promotion competence of S&T association for

the development of technology and economy of Beijing.• Develop the organizational superiority to upgrade the service competence of S&T associations

for organizing S&T personnel to contribute for our country.• Develop the regional superiority to upgrade the communication competence of S&T resources

in Beijing area cooperating with external.

BSTCC Work Frame• Implement the strategy of national innovation - Establishing an innovative technology services

system.• For the purpose of promoting technology transfer, accelerating commercialization and

market-orientation of technological fruits, BSTCC has launched a series of S&T exchange andcooperation projects, such as the SMEs International Cooperation Exhibition, the GoldenBridge Project and the China Overseas Intellectual Resources Program.

EEN Enterprise Europe Network

The Enterprise Europe Network is the largest network of contact pointsproviding advice on technology transfer and business opportunities to EUcompanies and researchers. It has been funded in 2008 and brings together

more than 600 organisations from across 45 countries, including Development Agencies,Commerce Chambers, Business Innovation Centres, Universities and Research Centres.

Gestore dei Servizi Energetici - GSE S.p.A. is the publicly-owned companywhich promotes and supports renewable energy sources (RES) in Italy.

GSE fosters sustainable development by providing support for renewable electricity (RES-E)generation and by taking actions to build awareness of environmentally-efficient energy uses.

In order to promote the Italian renewable energy operators, GSE created Corrente - The ItalianEnergy World: an institutional platform open to free-voluntary participation by renewableenergy operators wishing to develop and strengthen their technological and commercialcompetitiveness.Corrente, supported by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, promotes the Italianoperators throughout the world, enabling them to reap the numerous opportunities arising oninternational markets. International Foundation for Advanced Studies in Architecture

The Fondazione Internazionale per gli Studi Superiori di Architettura(International Foundation for Advanced Studies in Architecture) was establish in1992 and become “Moral Agency” by decree of the President of the ItalianRepublic in January 1996.

Foundation’s primary aim is the development and diffusion of architectural and urban planningstudies. Moreover the Foundation, headquartered in Naples, pursues the following main aims:the establishment of scientific infrastructures for research and study seminars, the establishmentof course and graduate training in architecture, the promotion of cultural exchanges withuniversities, associations and foundations – both Italian and foreign – which pursue similar aims,the establishment of scholarships for students and graduates in architecture, the collection ofbooks, drawings, sketches, graphic works and photographs, the publication of works ofarchitecture.Over the years, the International Foundation for Advanced Studies in Architecture has playeda very considerable depth of scientific activity nationally and internationally, through projectsof scientific interest in Europe and in the world making international seminars. The Foundation is now the owner of a project, funded by the Italian Ministry of University,called European School of Urban Architecture, which is proposed as an international academyof post-graduated research. The School promotes a rigorous approach to the analysis, designand construction of contemporary city. The three-year curriculum of the School obtainedrecognition of equivalence with the title of PhD by Italian Universities. In China the Foundation organized - with the Italian Trade Commission and General Commissionof Italy for Shanghai World Expo 2010 - the Exhibition Italian Architecture for Chinese City,edited by Uberto Siola (Foundation’s President) and Franco Purini: an opportunity of exchangeviews, between Italian and Chinese architects, to discover new solutions for the city of the thirdmillennium.

Osservatorio East & Far East

Osservatorio East & Far East provides services to study and collect information concerning theeconomic, social and administrative management of the European Union and the rest of theworld, organizing meetings, seminars, training and development aimed at promoting theexchange between Europe and the countries and / or areas of the world, promotion andmanagement of community programs in the areas of EU cooperation, research and training,organization of missions, conferences and seminars, conferences and other popular events andtraining. East & far East has been created by a group of Professors of the University of Naples,experts in International cooperation, researchers, civil servants, professionals, all sharing theobjective of giving birth to a new entity where to merge and increase the value of the singlefounders’ potential. The aim is to pursue common goals through a new structure easy tomanage, overcoming the complicated procedures typical of Italian Universities and publicbodies. The association aims to favour social, cultural, economic and scientific cooperation inthe European Union and in particular among western and eastern countries recently enteredin the EU. Its goal is therefore to create concrete opportunities of collaboration andconfrontation among cultures and communities, in order to favour intercultural dialogue andmutual understanding, contributing to build and enforce a common sense of European identity,which gathers and promote the various differences as an added value. East & far East has beencreated by a group of Professors, experts in International cooperation, researchers, civil servants,professionals, whose common goal is to create an active player in economic, political andcultural cooperation between countries. The different skills are essential to the success of theactivities and objectives of the association, represent the key to achieving them.

L’Orientale University

“L’Orientale” is the most important Italian University for what concernslanguages, literature, arts, archaeology, religion, economy, politics and law ofthe various parts of the world. It is divided into 4 faculties (Literature andPhilosophy, Foreign Languages, Political Sciences and Arabic-Islamic Studies) and

it offers 14 first level and 22 second level degrees, in addition to the various specialist courses.University “L’Orientale” offers very particular regional studies, mainly focused on socio-politicaland cultural systems of European, American, African and Asian countries. An University, then,which has a strong humanistic soul but also a huge involvement in social, aesthetic, andeconomic problems of the entire world. In each of the four faculties, students have thepossibility to study subjects related both to italian cultural heritage and to Eastern European,African, Asian and American languages. In addition to the particular educational patternsoffered, “L’Orientale” is characterized, mainly for some peculiar sectors, by a strongcollaboration and cooperation between students and Professors and by the high possibility totake part to cultural exchanges both within the Erasmus countries and with some Universitiesand research centres in Japan, Latin America, Australia, United States. For students who aim tobecome researchers, “L’ Orientale” offers 20 PhD courses, both in the University itself, both inother institutions such as the European School of High Studies and the Human Sciences Institute.

In this process, from a strategic perspective, Chinese Government encourages rationalutilization of marginal land resources to carry out the large-scale cultivation and base establishment of non-foodbioenergy plants. China should develop the bioenergy industry under the rule of ‘no competing for food with humanbeings and no competing for lands with food’. China has more than 1.0 × 109 hm2 of various types of marginal land

resources which is adaptable for cultivation of energy plants, 20 percent of which could be used to grow herbaceousbioenergy plants.

Research on large-scale cultivation and development of herbaceous bioenergy plant in marginal land should be re-searched and proposed in order to utilize the saline-alkali land, desertification land and other types of marginal landin China, to select the herbaceous bioenergy plant with high yield and strong ecological adaptability and to cultivateherbaceous bioenergy plant and evaluate its production potential in the marginal land in the Beijing suburbs. Thisresearch would lay a solid scientific foundation for the development of biomass material production and ecologicalrestoration in marginal land.


This project plans to cooperate with the relevant research institutions in Italy and do some international cooperationin the following scientific realms:

1. Interchange and share the resource of herbaceous bioenergy plant in China and Italy, and research its stress resis-tance in the same time.

This area of research covers different aspects of the research activities on cultural heritage. The conservation andthe preservation of monuments and artworks is aninterdisciplinary field requiring close co-operation between human sciences (philology, history, archeology, etc.) and

natural sciences (chemistry, physics, geology, biology, information technologies, etc.).

The Institutes of the CNR - DPC themselves are specialized in human, historical and archeological studies/topics, onone side, like the Institute for Aegean and Near Eastern studies (ICEVO), the Institute for the study on the Italic andAncient Mediterranean Civilizations (ISCIMA) and the Institute of Archeological heritage monuments and sites (IBAM);and, on the other side, Institutes more devoted to the development and testing of technologies to be applied tocultural heritage, like the Institute for Technologies applied to cultural heritage (ITABC) and the Institute for theConservation and enhancement of cultural heritage (ICVBC).

Relying on an integrated and multidisciplinary model of scientific network, the strategy carried out by the CNR - DPChas its starting point in the approach of the heritage considered as a “chain”.

The different moments of a study or of an action on an artworks follow coherently one after the other with the aim ofstudying the various aspects of the heritage and so increase the its final value. The different moments of the “chain”include knowledge, diagnosis, monitoring, valorisation, preservation, use and management.

Another strength of the CNR - DPC is the creation and the development of relationships with other public and private,national and international, players of the sector. These are private and public research organisations, universities,networks of excellence, public bodies and companies. Offer & Request: Environmental Monitoring and Remediation Strategy for Polluted Areawith Special Regards to the Commercial Port

An important effort has been dedicated in the last decade to investigate distribution patterns, sources, pathwaysand fate of a number of contaminants in the environmental system of the harbour of Naples and surrounding marineenvironments.

In particular, the Naples harbour founded as a military district in the period of Greek colonization, gradually grewin importance through centuries becoming theatre of important commercial and tourist activities. Many commer-cial and industrial activities insisted inside the port area (Sciarelli et al., 1982), about 30 industrial activities likeshipbuilding and repairs, electrical and sanitary plants whilst all others are located outside, northward of the east-ern Vigliena area, immediately related to the harbour (national and international societies managers of petroleumrefinery products). Presently, the harbour of Naples represents one of the most important commercial port of theMediterranean sea.

An intense monitoring program of seawater, sediments and biota started in 2001 and provided a clear “images” of thestate of contamination of the area and detailed information on the potential impact of different kinds of remediationwhich could be applied to restore acceptable pollution levels in this key commercial area of the Mediterranean.

An important research activity was implemented to verify the real effect of contaminants in terms of potential trans-fer from sediments to the water column and ultimately to the marine ecosystem. Sequential extraction procedures aswell as investigation on the physico-chemical parameters which control the dynamics of contaminants from sedimentsto the other interface were carried out providing an important “vision” of the cost effective approach to remedia-tion. On the other hand, geochemical modelling and contaminant speciation techniques were adopted to explore thepotential effects on the distribution of contaminants played by abrupt changes in physical parameters (pH, Eh, T, S,etc.) in order to forecast effects of dangerous release of pollutants in a highly dynamic environment.

Integrated remediation approaches were followed to verify the best practice for sediments restoring. In particular,soil washing and geoxidation by Fenton mixture were used to low high concentration of PAH and PCB with importantand significant results. However, the very fine grain size characterising the sediments basically exclude the possibilityof a definitive cleaning by organic contaminants but reduce the more labile and bioavailable fractions.

Offer & Request: Optimization Software for Scheduling Ship Transportation of Oil and BulkProducts

DESCRIPTION:

We have extensively studied the problem of the scheduling of fleet of freight ships that move oil or other bulk prod-ucts between production and consumption points. The problem has been formulated as a mixed integer optimizationmodel of large size and we have derived several theoretical and practical results that enable to solve these largeproblems at optimality or near optimality in reasonable time. This allows to perform the strategic and tactical plan-ning of a fleet of ships in a optimal way guaranteeing that the available ships are used at their best and that charter-ing is used only if really needed. The solution methods are based on the use of state of the art optimization softwarecombined with ad hoc subroutines. The method can be customized, with limited extra work, to different logistic prob-lems involving different types of products and different types of transport means (ground, air, combination thereof).An application of this software has been used by AgipPetroli (ENI) for the scheduling of crude oil tanker ships.


The proposed approach tackle a very complex problem using an extremely detailed mathematical model and sophis-ticated solution techniques. Its benefits are to be found in the quality of the solution produced and in the short timerequired to produce a solution. For example, the scheduling of 30 large sized oil tanker ships over a period of 3months can be produced in few hours, while tactical adjustments to an existing schedule may require few minutes.

CURRENT STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT:

The actual state of the system is a fully developed prototype in C under a linux environment. The system uses subrou-tines from commercial integer programming software but can be adapted to open source packages. The competencesthat have been developed in the realization of this project can be adapted to tackle the solution of similar logisticsand transportation problems using the latest development in the theory and practice of optimization of large andcomplex systems.

Typicalcomplex issues are the distribution of rest shifts – usually concentrated on the same days (Saturdays and Sundays), themanagement of demand peaks, the assignment of overtime, the dimension and the frequency of the shifts for differ-ent categories of contracts and of service type. Such problems can be modeled with very large integer programmingmodels that are able to accommodate, when properly designed, the different requirements of a specific service. Wehave develop an optimization model and algorithms for Alitalia Staff Rostering able to produce an optimal rosteringthat guarantees the coverage of the demand with the minimum staff size and the perfect balancing of the rest shiftsamong all staff members.

DMB is a collection of software tools that perform knowledge extraction from data. The methods adopted are basedon several models and algorithms that have been developed by a team of researchers of CNR-IASI and other scientificinstitutions. The main characteristic of the DMB system is that it extracts knowledge in form of logic rules, regardlessof the form of the input data. The main feature of the method is that it is based on the solution of several difficultoptimization problems used to model the feature selection and the formula extraction steps. Such models are solvedwith special algorithms developed ad hoc that exhibit a fast and robust behavior also with very large data sets. Themethods have been applied to Microarray analysis problems, living species classification through mitochondrial frag-ments analysis (Barcode), TAG SNPs selection and prediction.


The method proposes a innovative way to analyze experimental data in biological and genetic setting, providing atype of information that standard statistical methods do not support. The field is extremely active and new dataanalysis and problems are produced with the introduction of new experimental instruments and protocols, requiringnew high quality research to adapt the methods of analysis to the quality of the data.

Dystrophic phenomena may favour the growth of potentially toxic phytoplanktonic species in lakes, artificial reser-voirs and coastal waters. Particular attention has been paid to cyanophytes (or cyanobacteria) prokaryote organismsable to perform photosynthesis. IRSA carries out researches on this topic in three main areas: environmentalfactors behind the proliferation of cyanophytes, fast methods for detection of cyanophytes and impact of cyano-tox-ins on ecosystems. The role of nutrients in controlling the development of phytoplankton biomass is evaluated usingthe Algal Growth Potential test (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata). Analytical protocols based on immunoenzymaticscreening (ELISA) and quantitative analyses by HPLC are instead used to quantify the cyano-toxins concentrations.The potential toxicity of cyano-toxins is, then, tested on target organisms such as the crustacean Thamnocephalusplatyurus. The research results are integrated into guidelines for the management of the ecosystem. IRSA has recentlyconducted research activities on cyanophytes in Lake Pusiano, Lake Como and, more recently, in Lake Occhito, wheremassive blooms of the cyanophyte Planktothrix rubescens occurred.

DESCRIPTION:

In the last years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has become quite popular in Western countries, representingan alternative therapeutic approach, suitable for all the people willing to find a more natural and global approachto well-being and to gain an harmonious contact between human being and Cosmo. Chinese pharmacology founds itsefficacy on a wise utilization of plants, minerals and animal products.

As an example, plants belonging to the Panax genus, in particular P. ginseng (Asian ginseng), P. quinquefolius (Amer-ican ginseng), or P. japonicus (Japanese ginseng) represent one of the most important medical plants in the Orient.Among the three principal species, the P. ginseng species is known to have the most prominent medicinal effects(more pharmaceutically active ginsenosides). Therefore, Panax is commonly referred to as the ginseng species. Vari-ous clinical and pharmacological effects on the central nervous system, cardiovascular, endocrine and immune systemwere associated with its use. Ginseng and its constituents have been theorized to exhibit also anti-stress, anti-oxidantand anti-aging activity. Although the pharmacological effects of ginseng have been soundly proved, just a few studiesaimed to explore in detail the mechanisms of its actions and to structurally characterise bioactive molecules havebeen reported up to now and they would definitively contribute to provide scientific evidences useful also to furtherprompt the spread of TCM in Western countries.

Safety and therapeutic efficacy strictly rely on the product quality. Ginseng has been traditionally authenticated bymorphological and histological inspections, although, in many cases, these approaches are far from being reliable. Infact, the majority of ginseng products is sold in the form of powder or shredded slices: this obscures or abrogates theoriginal features of the plant and renders authentication via morphological and histological methods quite difficult, ifnot impossible. Therefore, expensive ginseng species can easily become a possible target for fraudulent labelling andsubstitution, also with other herbal products and poisonous plants.


In this contest, theInstituteofFood Scienceand Technology of the CNR (Italian National Research Council, ISA-CNR),due to its innovative and multidisciplinary technological platform, can provide a significant contribution to this re-search area.

Concerning the issue of ginseng authentication, “molecular profiling” strategies based on mass spectrometric tech-niques could be developed for discriminating different ginseng species as well as species of different geographic ori-gin. Furthermore, this analytical approach will also be integrated by methods based on nucleic acid analysis, whichwill be developed in order to assure an indisputable certification of authentication of the analysed ginseng samples.

Therefore, the rapid and reliable methodological approach, shortly described above, may easily be applied to otherbiological active molecules belonging to the TCM with the added value to expand the herbal industry and assure moresafety and efficacy to the consumers.

In terms of basic science, the collaboration with ISA-CNR can be extended to study, at molecular level, how the nonnutritional food components present in TCM herbs exert a protective effect towards degenerative pathologies. Thisgoal can be achieved by the contribution of the following two units: the Food Chemoprevention group and the Pro-teomic andBiomolecularMassSpectrometryCentergroup. The former has a proved expertise in cellular models aimedto assess the mechanism(s) of action of potentially chemopreventive compounds. The latter perform proteomic andmetabolomic studies in order to identify and structurally characterize bioactive molecules, as well as to gain an in-sight into the metabolic pathways involved in the biosynthesis of such molecules.

The same strategy here described for ginseng can be easily transferred and applied to other compounds derived fromor present in TCM.

The aims of this project are as follow:

1. Identify parameters of the general environmental conditions of fish farming. In particular, indicators of nutri-tional status and development of a diagnostic system to evaluate these parameters; as indicator of nutritionalstatus will be used leptin, a hormone whose levels in the blood are linked to the nutritional status of the indi-vidual.

2. Identify parameters of the quality during the preservation time of caught and farmed fish species in order toproduce a diagnostic system for these parameters.

3. Development of an improved system of conservation (biopackaging, edible coating) of fish fillets. As indicatorsof the conservation status of the meat will be used chemical and biochemical diagnostic parameters (e.g, his-tamine, oxidation of hemoglobin, ammonia, ATP, changes in pH, trimethylamine, etc.), some of which will beassessed during the packaging phase.

DESCRIPTION:

A fruit or vegetable is a living, respiring, edible tissue which has been detached from the parent plant. Fruits andvegetables are perishable products with active metabolism during the post harvest period. The shelf life of fruits andvegetables can be extended by, in simple terms, retarding the physiological, pathological and physical deteriorative

processes (generally referred to as post harvest handling) or by inactivation of the physiological processes (generallyreferred to as food preservation). Packaging has an important role to play in maximizing the horticultural fresh pro-duce shelf life.


The main project activities are summarized as follow:

1. Selection and analysis of biobased biodegradable materials suitable for the design of innovative and safe EMAPof horticultural fresh produce;

2. Experimental packaging prototypes for the evaluation of materials and EMAP system using horticultural freshproduce;

3. Assessment of the quality parameters of the fresh products related to microbial spoilage and sensory percep-tion. The critical quality factors for each product will be analysed by performing relevant sensorial, microbial,physical and chemical analyses.

The proposed project aims at increasing shelf life of horticultural fresh produce by mean the develop of the innov-ative and safe biodegradable Equilibrium Modified Atmosphere Packaging (EMAP) film systems, based mainly on theuse of environmental friendly biodegradable raw materials and aimed at the improvement of the shelf life, quali-ty and safety of specific high value sensitive produce. The growing popularity of EMAP vegetables and fruits can beexplained by the behaviour of the modern consumer who demands fresh vegetables and fruits of a long shelf-lifewithout the use of preservatives. EMAP of Fresh Produce is an effective method for prolonging the shelf-life of freshand minimally processed produce, making it ideal for long haul transport, exporters, the hospitality trade and retailpackaging. Because EMAP enables processors to extend shelf-life without using chemicals it is also ideal for the pack-aging of organic produce.

The Built Heritage Lab, (BHLab), an Italian laboratory has developed a specific methodology for the management ofthe diagnostic, fact-finding and design processes, aimed to the architectural heritage conservation by means of ef-

ficient solutions favoring technology transfer and innovative and eco-sustainable methods. Its activities regards thedevelopment, definition, testing, optimisation and transfer of methods and technologies for the study, enhancementand enjoyment of Cultural Heritage, by means a significant number of case-studies in Italy and abroad, with refer-ence to sites of great international importance. In support of this process, the laboratory has developed: integrateddiagnostic analysis systems having a low impact on the monument and the environment; technologies and tools fortechnological adaptation, upgrading and energy efficiency and the use of renewable resources for the built heritage;a multicriteria analysis application tool for selecting technological solutions for the restoration of buildings of sub-stantial historical and artistic importance. The institute carries out researches in the field of the knowledge, theconservation and the protection of monumental buildings and sites.

The main activities of research are:

i) Integrated sustainable methodologies for the study, analysis, preservation and valorisation of the built heritage In-tegrated diagnostic analysis to support decision making for restoration projects and

The laboratory has developed a protocol for intervention through a multidisciplinary approach using integrated diag-nostic analysis systems with low impact on monuments and on environment; design procedures for planned conser-vation, technologies and tools for technological adaptation. BHLab has also developed the concept of "Green Con-servation", which promotes an holistic approach to the conservation interventions and the upgrading of historicalbuildings and urban centres. The "Green Conservation" focuses on research that integrates traditional and innovativetechnologies aimed at the plant adaptation and at the improving of the energy efficiency measures and of the use ofrenewable resources in the built heritage.

This approach was recently tested in a medieval castle located in alluvial plains of the Po river, turned into a countryresidence in the mid 1700s, with the aim to choose the most sustainable solutions in such example of historic ex-cellence. The integrated analysis of historical data, the diagnostic surveys, the architectural reconstructions of thebuilding phases and archaeological excavations, combined with the energy audit and energy efficiency study, guid-ed the design and project choices. For example an integrated system of natural materials panels, ventilated walls,radiant heat and air conditioning system has been designed for the attic floor able to reduce the 40% of the heatingrequirements energy demand and thermal losses.

The Venaria Reale project was promoted and accomplished by the Ministry for the Cultural Heritage and RegionePiemonte, with the support of the European Union and the Ministry for the Economy and the cooperation of the Townof Venaria. It was the largest cultural conservation effort and restoration project ever undertaken in Europe, involv-ing the complex and its countryside. The renovation concerned the buildings, park and gardens, the old town centerbut also facilities, parking areas and the road network, making the complex a standard of greatness in restoration andmanaging: experimental restoration techniques, innovative methods, ancient materials and new settings, traditionalbuilding techniques and modern artistic languages, handicap accessibility and expense reduction.

The complex of the Venaria Reale is managed by the Cultural Exploitation Consortium "La Venaria Reale", that bringstogether the Italian Ministry for the Cultural Heritage, Regione Piemonte, the Venaria Reale Town Council, the Com-pagnia di San Paolo and the Fondazione per l'Arte of the Compagnia di San Paolo.

The Consortium is in charge of the Reggia di Venaria, the Gardens, the Orangery and the Stables, as well as for theVilla dei Laghi and parts of the Borgo Castello in theParkofLa Mandria. It cares about conservation, maintenance andrepairs, permanent and temporary exhibitions, tourism development and exploitation.

The most suitable restoration methods and materials were selected according to the results of deep historical re-searches and based on the conclusions of over 5.800 preliminary analysis and diagnostics: stratigraphy, tomography,chemical analysis, thermoanalysis, mercury porosity measurements, analysis of soluble salts, infrared and X rays dif-fraction measurements, traditional and laser technology surveying. Since its start, the Venaria project has compliedto accessibility laws and avoids any architectonic barrier so the complex is entirely accessible to everyone. More-over some programs have been specially dedicated to physical-sensory and cultural accessibility: a tactile itineraryfor partially-sighted and blind visitors, dedicated iPod Touch devices for deaf, electric scooters for disabled peoplevisiting the gardens, services for visitors with psychological distress or mental disabilities. Since its start, the Venariaproject has complied to accessibility laws and avoids any architectonic barrier so the complex is entirely accessibleto everyone. DESCRIPTION:

Fondazione Idis is highly specialized on the project and realization of both temporary exhibitions and museum instal-lations, since it designs and coordinates “in house” all the exhibitions in the museum “Città della Scienza”, such as“Futuro Remoto: a voyage between Science and Fantasy”, which is the main Italian interactive exhibition for scien-tific disclosure.

The Foundation has projected the “Science Centre” in “Città della Scienza” ( as regards as contents and internalinstallations) but also it has dealt with projects and feasibility studies for other Italian museums (The Museum of Nat-ural History in Maglie (Le), the museum of energy, etc.)

In the archaeological site ofPompeii, Idis is the head of the team who has designed the “Antiquarium” , the introduc-tive area before starting the visit ofPompeii, which is realized with 3D and virtual representations about the daily lifein the ancientPompeii.

As regards as the cooperation actions for the cultural development, it has coordinated an international team of Ital-ian, Israeli and Palestinian experts for the design of a Science Centre in East Jerusalem, at the University Campus ofAl Quds ( which has been already realized a first part of ), but also the “Festival della Scienza” in Nigeria. Nowadaysit is working at the elaboration of a project for the realization of a Science Centre in Senegal/Burkina Faso.

CUEN Srl Society (totally managed by Idis) owns all the expertises for graphic ideation and design, multimedia systemsand web.

In collaboration with BAST and BSTCC, inChina, Idis has started a number of new Chino-Italian initiatives of coopera-tion.

A) Bioassays on sediments and water conducted with different aquatic model organisms (planktonic and benthonic).

Biological Assays and bioaccumulation tests (in lab./in situ)using Paracentrotus lividus to test embriotoxicity andspermiotoxicity after exposure to toxicants; Use of benthic crustaceans Corophium orientale and Ampelisca diademato test sediment toxicity. For C.orientale this lab defined a standard ISO protocol to evaluate sediment toxicology.Useof planktonic copepod Acartia tonsa for acute and chronic bioassays; Use of embryos, larvae and adults;evaluationof different end-points (motility, mortality and apoptosis). Balanus amphitrite and Mytilus galloprovincialis are alsoused in monitoring program to evaluate aquatic toxicity.

B) Heavy metal detection

Coastal areas and portual sediment analysis.In Mytilus galloprovincialis we evaluate bioaccumulation in in situ moni-toring program for long term studies related to heavy metal and human contamination.

C) Zooplankton biology and ecophysiology

Research on Biology and Physiology of calanoid copepods. Productivitiy and fecundity with different phytoplanktonicdiets. Use of calanoid copepod for ecotoxicological bioassays. Studies on compounds affecting copepod reproduction,viability and induction of apoptosis.

D) Rearing and culture of some marine organisms

Experimental rearing of sea urchin Paracentrutus lividus and copepod Acartia tonsa , different phytoplanktonicstrains. These organisms can be sent to other laboratories for toxicological tests.

E) Sediment analysis and treatment

Toxicological, technical and economical evaluation of sediment treatments for their re-use in different processes.

Offer & Request: Power Supply Kit of Liquid Methane

DESCRIPTION:

MARE research activities produced are dedicated to new solutions power supply kit of liquid methane patent.

The project M.A.R.E. provides a gradual development of liquid methane for possible use in various fields, throughsuccessive stages, by:

1. adoption of a power supply kit of liquid methane on the current circulating means which allows the use ofmixtures of diesel fuel (10-20%), methane (80-90%) with significant savings on fuel costs and reducing harmfulemissions, compared to a particularly low investment;

2. adoption of specific engines fueled with natural gas, developed by the SEA project, in the various areas ofpossible use;

3. processes of use of biomass, the most innovative and interesting phase of the project, focusing on the produc-tion of biogas quality transportation and fixed installations, through:

• car manifactures and regulation institutions;• the existing agricultural production in Campania ;• ad hoc crops in marginal areas or no longer used for food production;• the municipal solid waste.

APPLICATION FIELDS: Truck, bus and boat transport.


This application on the current circulating means allows the use of mixtures of diesel fuel (10-20%), methane (80-90%)with significant effects:

• A strong reduction of the emission and pollution in the cities, ports and on the main roads;• An improvement of the energy-efficiency;• A cost reduction in the energy production compared to a particularly low investment.

Zilio Group develops new technologies, applied on industrial scale, in order to safeguard the environment and reducethe management costs and the management of the systems. In particular:

Zilio Group deals with proper treatment to remove polluted compounds from water for human consumption.
