AbstractThis report lists reference guides to the mammalian faunas of U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Most states and provinces have relatively current (published 1980–99) comprehensive references to the identity, distribution, behavior, and local literature on mam-mals. The list includes works specifi cally dealing with endangered, threatened, and rare mammals of several states, and includes cita-tions for critical reviews of listed works appearing in the Journal of Mammalogy, Mammal Review, Journal of Wildlife Management, and several regional natural history journals. This catalog can help local researchers identify effi ciently references that address local species or groups of species elsewhere within their ranges.

Key Words: mammal faunas, mammal guidebooks, state mammal references, regional mammal references

CATALOG OF STATE AND PROVINCIAL MAMMAL PUBLICATIONS FOR THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA, 1980–1999 1

IntroductionComprehensive reference guides to local and regional faunas are an important resource for better understanding the distribution, rela-tive abundance, biology, ecology, and natural history of individual species and local faunal assemblages. Such guides provide an entryway into the local and regional literature, often including the “gray” literature. This is important to wildlife managers and other investigators who can benefi t signifi cantly from comparing their results and observations with research fi ndings reported elsewhere. Organized listings of references can aid investigators in identifying effi ciently works that address a species elsewhere within its range. In addition, “mammal guides are not only an invaluable reference source for the professional, but are also an important stimulus to the layman and government at all levels” (Hickman 1981).

Numerous regional mammal faunas have been published. Hickman (1981) cataloged over 400 reference guides to the mammalian faunas of almost 150 countries, dependencies, and well known, geographically isolated areas. His list included approximately 150 guides to individual U.S. states and about 30 references for Cana-dian provinces, all published prior to 1980. Many of these guides have since been revised or updated, and numerous additional state and regional works have been produced. Whitaker and Hamilton (1998) provide a partial list of state mammal faunas for the states east of the Mississippi River, but there has been no thorough listing of North American state and provincial mammal publications produced over the past two decades (1980–1999). Here, I provide a catalog of state and provincial mammal references published during this period.

Organization and ContentA number of general principles defi ne the scope of this work and, therefore, the included references. I include works for both technical and non-technical audiences. Generally, I list only complete state and provincial faunas, excluding works covering only a small area of a state or dealing with only a limited number of species. There are three broad exceptions to this rule. First, I include works with a more limited scope if they provide information that fi lls signifi cant gaps in our understanding of a state’s or province’s fauna (e.g., the Padgett and Rose [1991] and Rose, et al. [1990] references listed under North Carolina and the Quinn [1990] and Cary and Wehau-sen [1991] references listed under California). Second, works deal-ing exclusively with bats or marine mammals are included for several states because these groups of species are often treated poorly by authors or omitted completely from traditional state

faunas. Third, endangered, threatened, and rare faunas are given special attention due to their conservation interest. Thus, I identify references to this subset of species when I am aware of them. In all three cases, the works of more limited scope have generally been produced after publication of a comprehensive treatment of the area’s mammal fauna. I include annotated checklists, larger distributional studies, bibliographies of a statewide nature, selected government agency reports, and an occasional serial article when I believe them to be important recent works for a state. As with the works of more limited scope, I typically include these types of references only if they were published after recent comprehensive treatments of an area’s fauna. I exclude lists of museum holdings, expedition samplings, and minor distributional records, however, as these are generally narrower in scope or represent incompletely an area’s fauna. I also exclude works covering fossil faunas. Although, I agree with Hickman (1981) that inclusion of fossil forms would be a nice addition to many regional guides and would like to encourage that practice.

I place a greater importance on utility than consistency and there-fore take liberty in interpreting the above guidelines. The goal in compiling the catalog is not to be all-inclusive, but rather to provide access to the most signifi cant works for each state and province. In many cases, this meant making a subjective determination and leaving a work off the list. Therefore, it is reasonable to suspect that there could be omissions of some important works. This is mostly due to the massive amount of literature involved and the subjective nature of evaluating the importance of each work. I apologize for any signifi cant oversights and welcome additions, corrections, and other comments that would improve the usefulness of the catalog. These can be sent to my attention at Bureau of Integrated Science Services, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, P.O. Box 7921, Madison, WI 53707-7921.

References are listed fi rst alphabetically by author and then by year under individual state and province headings. In cases where multiple editions of a work were issued during the period covered by this survey, I list only the most recent edition. Although this work covers the period 1980–1999, it also includes a few references published in 2000. General references covering the North American mammal fauna, or large portions thereof, precede the state and provincial listings. These works can be consulted fi rst to determine the likelihood of a particular species occurring in a given state or province. Regional references covering a smaller geographic scale are listed under the states they cover. Twenty-one states and 8 provinces lack up-to-date guides or are covered in regional works only (Table 1).

Many of the listed reference works have been critically reviewed. When a book review has been published in the Journal of Mammal-ogy, Mammal Review, Journal of Wildlife Management, or one of the regional natural history journals (Blue Jay, California Fish and Game, Maine Naturalist, Murrelet, Northeastern Naturalist, North-western Naturalist, Northwest Science, Prairie Naturalist, South-western Naturalist), a citation follows the reference to provide access to the review(s). These citations will allow researchers to ascertain conveniently how others have assessed the quality of the listed works.
