    Botanical art and illustration is the well-established tradition o portraying plants or scientiic purposes, recording vanishing

    species or historical recollection or rendering the beauty and inspiration we experience in the lora o the world around us

    Denver Botanic Gardens Certiicate in Botanical Art and Illustration program is designed to teach a comprehensive series o

    classes in botanical illustration, oering participants the drawing and painting skills required to render accurate and useudepictions o the plant world with a ocus on detail. This program is or the dedicated illustrator, as well as the devoted ama

    teur. It culminates in a certiicate or some students and oers an ongoing program o botanical classes or others.

    ELEctIvE coURSESElective courses serve a variety o purposes. They are d

    signed to increase the students knowledge, ability and e

    perience in botanical art. In addition to the 13 requir

    courses, you must select 100 elective hours. The number

    elective classes oered in any one year may vary. Gu

    instructor workshops may be taken as electives.

    Please note: To receive credit or any course, attendance

    required at the irst class and at 80 percent o all classes

    Selected lectures at Denver Botanic Gardens can qualiy

    elective credits. Participation in one lecture gives one el

    tive credit hour; you can receive a maximum o 15 cre

    hours rom these lectures. Caf Botanique, organized

    tanical Art and Illustration students, Gardens members, t

    general public, academia and artists. Pre-registration is n

    Botanical Painting on Vellum with Kate Nessler

    Painting and vellum have a long and rich history, dating to 8000

    BCE, continuing with the manuscripts o the Middle Ages, and

    succeeded by botanical paintings by such artists as Redoute, Ehret

    and McEwen. The current resurgence o vellums use by contem-

    porary botanical artists attests to its unique beauty and longevity.

    You will learn about vellum -- its properties, possibilities, quirks

    and beauty--rom unrolling a ull skin to mounting the nished art

    in the mat. This workshop will include demonstrations and detailed

    inormational handouts. Using each artists own style while

    incorporating new techniques, we will work together to nd our

    way across this challenging surace. The group will work, share

    diculties, discoveries and accomplishments. Individual artists will

    work with condence to expand and strengthen their own skills.

    Kate Nessler has been painting plants or more than 27 years.

    Her work on vellum is recognized both nationally and interna-

    tionally. She has exhibited widely and won awards includi

    three gold medals rom the Royal Horticultural Society (RH

    UK, and an Award of Excellence rom the American Socie

    o Botanical Artists. In 2009 she was awarded the Kend

    Distinguished Alumni Awardrom Kendall College o Art a

    Design, Grand Rapids, MI.

    Her work is included in many private and permanent collectio

    including the RHS; The Hunt Institute or Botanical Documentatio

    PA; The Morton Arboretum, IL; The Alisa and Isaac Sutton Collectio

    NY; The Highgrove Florilegium, UK; Brooklyn Botanical Gard

    Florilegium, NY; and The Shirley Sherwood Collection, UK.

    Chinese Brush Painting with Sally Yu Leung

    Three Friends of Winter: Pine, Bamboo and PlumPine (Pinus spp.), bamboo (Bambusoidea), and plum (Prunus

    mume) have been known to the Chinese as the three riends

    o winter since the 10th century. Despite the icy weather, both

    pine and bamboo remain green. The rugged pine is a symbol o

    longevity, nobility and venerability. Bamboo exemplies integrity,

    or it bends in the storm, but does not break. In addition, its straig

    exterior and hollow culm, symbolizes humility and delity. The

    to bloom in the New Year, plum is emblematic o perseveran

    and purity. Other than introducing the unique characteristics a

    techniques associated with traditional Chinese ink painting o pi

    bamboo and plum, this class will also explore the abiding rhyth

    o nature and human culture in China. You will learn a number

    Chinese characters to create interesting sayings to compleme

    pine, bamboo and plum as well. Writing Chinese characters a

    painting not only gives insight into Chinese culture, but can a

    be a relaxing and meditative practice.

    Introduction to Botanical Illustration

    Are you new to drawing? I you can write with a pencil, you can

    draw with one. Step-by-step, acquire the techniques you need to

    draw what you see. Simple exercises train you to observe objectively

    Drawing on Tradition: Field Sketches with Arthur Lakes

    At the turn o the 20th century, Arthur Lakes was Colorados

    Renaissance man. A prolic illustrator, Lakes was also was

    a minister, geologist, proessor, paleontologist, writer, and

    naturalist. With a resh and straightorward approach to eld

    sketching, Lakes work oers a perect launching point or our

    plein air adventure. Begin at Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison, where

    the biographers o Arthur Lakes will orient you to his work and

    methods. Move out to the ridge to capture grand panoramas in

    Micron pen. The next two days will be in the Gardens, learning
