Three Friends of Winter: Pine, Bamboo and PlumPine (Pinus spp.), bamboo (Bambusoidea), and plum (Prunus
mume) have been known to the Chinese as the three riends
o winter since the 10th century. Despite the icy weather, both
pine and bamboo remain green. The rugged pine is a symbol o
longevity, nobility and venerability. Bamboo exemplies integrity,
or it bends in the storm, but does not break. In addition, its straig
exterior and hollow culm, symbolizes humility and delity. The
to bloom in the New Year, plum is emblematic o perseveran
and purity. Other than introducing the unique characteristics a
techniques associated with traditional Chinese ink painting o pi
bamboo and plum, this class will also explore the abiding rhyth
o nature and human culture in China. You will learn a number
