2012 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF FCCWA. The AGM will be held on 10 December. In this issue of
Cat Call will be nomination forms for Governing Council, and Membership renewal forms. There will
be five positions to fill on Governing Council next year.
Governing Council Nomination forms are due at the FCCWA Office by Friday 26 October 2012
Membership renewals for 2013 are due at the FCCWA office by 1 November 2012. Club Affiliat ion Fees for 2013 are due at t he FCCWA Office by 1 November 2012.
GROUP 3 SPLIT FOR FCCWA CAT OF THE YEAR AWARDS FOR 2012 is: male and female for entire, neuter and spey for desexed and male and female for kittens.
DUE BY DATE FOR KITTEN REGISTRATIONS. Concern has been expressed that 84 days (12 weeks) is too late for breeders to register their kittens. Effective from 1 September 2012 - kittens must be registered within 70 days (10 weeks) of their birth. After this time the usual late fees w ill apply. This means that the due by date matches the earliest that kittens should leave the breeder's home. We thank members
for their cooperation.
A reminder that Breeders may ask the FCCWA Registrars to amend the colour of kittens, free of charge, up to 6 months old.
A reminder also, that there has always been a $10 charge for Transfer of Breeding cats/kittens.

PRESENTATION OF SHOW CATS
Exhibitors, please be aware that several visiting judges this year have commented on the presentation of
some of our cats at shows. The Show is a beauty competition and all the
entrants, both long hair and shorthair, MUST be groomed with clean coats free
of knots, clean eyes and ears. In particular they must not have any evidence
of FLEAS or flea dirt. Judges have been very critical and disappointed when
they are presented with a dirty cat or one that has fleas, which has happened
this year. If you need advice on how to prepare your cat for the shows please
ask us in the Office and we will put you in touch w ith someone who w ill help.

and respect this Code of Ethics in their actions and dealings within the Cat Fancy.
4.1 F.C.C.W.A. (Inc) Breeders shall maintain comprehensiv e records of all cats
owned by them, all litters bred and the names and addresses of new owners of kittens sold by them.
4.2 The Breeder shall breed for the health, quality, temperament and the
betterment of the breed. It is the responsibility of the Breeder to ensure that a prospectiv e new owner who wishes to either breed or show the cat/kitten is
prov ided with the best potential show or breeding cat/kitten available. Cats/kittens with breed faults or sub-standard animals SHOULD NOT be sold for
breeding and showing. 4.3 Breeders shall maintain the best standard of health and care for their cats and
keep only the number of cats which can properly be cared for and protected from illness and stress related problems.
4.4 Breeding cats shall be immunised regularly and tested against diseases

gift or sale to a new Owner. 4.11 Transfer may be made for "Breeding" or "Non-Breeding". "Non-Breeding" means
that should the cat produce kittens, none of the progeny can be registered. The kitten is to be desexed. It is the responsibility of the Breeder to explain to
the new owner the meaning of the "Non-Breeding" status. It is also important to point out to the new owner that, by signing the transfer application form, they
are signing a contract to have the cat/kitten desexed.

There have been three shows run by FCCWA affiliated clubs since the last Cat Call. All three have been well supported and hopefully all participants enjoyed themselves.
Birman Rex and Others Cat Club – Monday 4 June 2012
This two ring show was run on the Monday public holiday due to a clash with a COAWA show on the Sunday. A total of 94 cats registered for the show, with a reasonable proportion of dedicated show enthusiasts having been to both the COAWA show and FCCWA show. We
were lucky enough to have two visiting international judges who were in Australia on their way to the ACF National in Melbourne. Lucy Arends-Wagner from the South African Cat
Council judged in ring 1 and FIFe judge, Lone Lund, from Denmark, judged in Ring 2. Lone stepped in at the last minute with the scheduled judge having to withdraw after a family emergency. The ACF’s ILO (International Liason Officer) Lesley Morgan did an amazing job
to not only source such an excellent replacement but to get her here in time for the show. Supreme in Ring One went to Siamese Cindylin Pegasus owned by Rod Pattinson, and Ring Two Persian Shawtop I Know Who My Daddy Is owned by Penny Kelly
Oriental Shorthair Cat Club “Christmas in July” - Sunday 1 July 2012
This three ring show had a distinct Christmas flavour with the hall and cages decorated with tinsel, bells and santas. A total of 123 cats were entered for the show which created a few
headaches with set up as there recently has been a decline in the number of available tables at High Wycombe. However, some clever numbering by show secretary Sue Game meant that the cages just fitted the available tables even if it did mean that Group 1 and Group 2
cats were mixed in together. The only other alternative would have been to put all cats in single cages which would have been very unpleasant for some of the larger Group 1 cats. In Ring 1 we had TICA judge Steve Savant from the US and it was interesting watching him
bringing out all of his top 5 cats to make his final selection in each group. Rings 2 and 3 were made up of our talented local judges – Jane Horstman, Wayne Raftopolous, Betty
Payne, Pamela Lanigan and Christine Selby (COAWA). Apart from the Christmassy theme, another notable feature of this show was Kirsty Connell and Suzanne Bolland’s use of the Thermomix in the kitchen to produce a range of delicious freshly-made pizzas and other
food. Supreme in Ring One went to Russian Tachali Countessa Tatiana owned by Maree Carle, Supreme in Ring Two went to Russian Tachali Contessa Arina and Supreme in Ring 3 went to Siamese Cindylin Pegasus owned by Rod Pattinson.
Birman Rex and Others Cat Club assisted by the British Shorthair Cat Club – Sun-
day 15 July 2012 The newly created British Shorthair Cat Club celebrated their arrival in the form of rosettes
cheerfully emblazoned with Union Jacks. A total of 117 cats (including 24 Russians) were en-tered in this 2 ring event. Judges for this show were FIFe judges Charles Spijker and Alexey Shchuki from the Netherlands who are in Australia for the first time. Once again, show man-
ager/secretary Pamela Lanigan had to plan her setup very carefully to accommodate the lack of tables, but a growing number of owner cages meant that a smaller number of the heavy triple cages were needed. The show appeared to run very smoothly, but as everyone who
has ever been involved in running a show knows, there is always lots of activity going on in the background to make sure that the judges and exhibitors are looked after. As usual,
Pamela and her team did a great job. Supreme in both Ring 1 and Ring 2 went to Siamese kitten Suntra Ling Lek owned by Rod Pattinson.

For more than 40 years, Dr Don Nickels has been dedicated to the
animals of Western Australia and to the veterinary profession. He has also been a huge supporter of FCCWA and many people would have
been in contact with him as he provided vetting services at shows, at Cottesloe Veterinary Hospital or through his involvement in assessing
cats in experimental breeding programs. Dr Nickels has now retired and FCCWA have sent him a letter of thanks and certificate of appreciation.
We wish Dr Nickels all the best for his retirement.
Krispy Kremes are coming back! Earlier this year FCCWA ran a small fundraising campaign selling
Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Very few people were asked to partici-pate as we wanted to test out the process and see whether they would sell.
We had an enthusiastic response and so have decided to run an-
other campaign, and will have Krispy Kremes deliv ered fresh to the show that is scheduled for 21 October 2012.
If every member sold one box to family or friends, we would have
a v ery successful fundraiser which would boost FCCWA’s capacity to offer more serv ices to members.
Watch out for more information as the date gets closer.

The 2012 ACF National Show was held at the Melbourne Showgrounds on June 10. This 40th anniversary show was organised by a team with members from all over Australia including
our own Carole Galli (sponsorship coordinator) and Pamela Lanigan (website). Show Manager was Lesley Morgan from Tasmania and Show Secretary was Robbie Walker from Queensland.
A strong contingent of FCCWA members headed east to participate in the show including Pamela Lanigan, Carole Galli, Penny Kelly, Lynne Moorman, Lee-Anne Pitman Pryde, Sue
Game and Linda Horton. Many of the FCCWA members took cats and/or assisted in the show as stewards or scribes. There were also a number of COAWA members there and it was
great to see such a large and enthusiastic group from Western Australia. The show itself was three rings and there were 415 entries. The show committee had done a
great job in publicising the event and so on the day, hundreds of people flocked to the show-ground to see the wide range of cats that were on show, especially one large Maine Coon that had captured the attention of the media.
Most of the results were announced as the day wore on, but the final placings were
determined by panels of judges. Each finalist was brought before three judges who voted to decide the best in that group.
As the judging panel narrowed down the results, it was thrilling to see a West Australian Russian Blue win Supreme All Breeds Exhibit! A fantastic and well deserved result for Lucy Nikiforos (COAWA). Congratulations also go to Nick Skeet (COAWA) whose brown
Burmese kitten won best group 3 kitten in show Full show results can be found at http://acf2012.breedsite.com/results/
At 2 years of age “Rupert” weights 9kg and still has some growing to do. He is so big that it was hard
to see FCCWA member Sue Game as she “stewarded” him to the judges bench.

Concerto (3) and Dbl Gd Ch Tuam Centrefold (OEW). I did not buy her as a show cat and she is always indoors. By my side, in fact, as much as possible. Odds seems to derive all she
wants in life from our companionship and food. She was named Odds n Ends by me because of her eye colour. Both eyes retain a good blue
and orange. Odds still has a full coat, though not as heavy as when she was younger. She needs constant grooming and bathing (which she enjoys). She is not deaf and has fair eye site. Odds biggest problem is from a stroke she had five years ago. As a result she can't hold
her head properly so she sees things slightly askew. This gives some moderate problems with drinking and eating while walking is a zigzag affair.
Her biggest problem is jumping (she probably can't see and judge where to go) and jumping is confined to an upholstered couch and chairs plus my bed. She manages the 19 stairs in
my house in her own fashion. Odds n Ends has a definite schedule, which is run by sunlight, for her requirements of food,
water or attention. All these are met by mother. There or are no mews or vocal requests. A sweet look is all that is needed. (unlike my Bengal, Lots a Dots, who loudly tells me what she expects & now!) Routine and timing are very precise--who needs a watch?
The contrast between a Persian and Bengal is amazing. When my Bengal, Nanlow Lots a
Dots, arrived 10 years ago she was not top cat. She still isn't and the challenge is always on. Odds has dominance over food, where she sits, where she sleeps on my bed, and especially who gets to sit nearest to me. She is loosing somewhat in the chase and now sometimes be-
ing chased rather than being the chaser. She goes at considerate speed considering her age. Both communicate with me--Odds by looks and body language, Lots by verbally yelling and
pacing around.
It has been a rewarding life with both of my little friends. I will miss Odds when she dies as she is my companion cat, always with me (shower, toilet, meal times, sleep times--all times)
We never know when we get a new kitten what rewards await us. Unfortunately we do know
there will be an end. I have enjoyed our relationship for
what it gives both of us. Jane Horstman

Cat Act 2011 Update
A committee convened by the Minister for Local Government’s Office is working on a set of draft instructions and regulations which will determine how the Cat Act operates. There are a
large number of issues to consider, not least of which is how the Act will be funded. Some of you may have seen in the news that the Minister for Local Government has announced that
the State Government will allocate more than $3 million to help implement the cat legisla-tion. This will largely be used to fund the created of cat management facilities (essentially cat pounds).
The committee will consult with each group that is impacted by the legislation and these will include local councils, rescue organisations, vets, microchip implanters and breeders.
Although initially it was hoped that this process would be over by now, other government issues have taken priority and slowed things down. At this stage it seems most likely that
any further discussions will not take place until September/October. However, we are constantly being reassured that there will be provisions in the regulations
to recognise breeders and other participants in the Cat Fancy and there will be accommoda-tions to allow us to continue with our hobby. When the Act finally comes into play, all Coun-cils will review their policies to make sure they are in line with the state legislation. Our un-
derstanding is that where people who are not members of a prescribed organised have more cats than are allowed, they will be encouraged to register their cats and will be granted per-mits to have the additional cats on the understanding that they will not be replaced. It is
hoped that members of prescribed organisations will have expanded capacity but at this stage we don’t know what this will look like. There is no intent that Council Rangers will go
in and seize people’s existing cats and if you are experiencing any issues relating to the leg-islation it would be worth approaching Governing Council, or contacting the Minister for Local Government’s Office directly to check.
FCCWA Governing Council has endorsed a subcommittee consisting of Mark Garden, Kirsty Connell and Linda Horton. The subcommittee has met with representatives from COAWA and
ANCATS and will continue to work together and give a consistent response once the regula-tions are available for input. This will have impact on everyone. If you wish to know more or
want some input into the process, please speak to members of your Governing Council or the subcommittee.

VETTING IN
We all know that excellent presentation of your cat for the judge is of the utmost importance at a cat show . This standard should be no different for the vet, whom is judging your cat very strictly on its health and vitality.
This article is by no means aimed to pick at particular owners or breeds, but rather makes comment on some generalizations I have noted in my career as a veterinarian both involved in vetting in shows, but also as a breeder/exhibiter.
The role of the veterinarian at any show , be it in-line or in-cage vetting is to thoroughly examine your ani-mals for any signs of disease, particularly contagious disease, that can be spread easily in the show envi-ronment. Common contagious diseases include (but are not limited to) cat flu, fleas, ringworm and ear mites.
Please note, that if a veterinarian has even the slightest suspicion of any problem, and deems your cat a risk to other animals, it should be removed from the premises without fuss and upset. That diagnosis is based on observations at the time of the examination, and further diagnostics may well be required to
substantiate further. It is unlikely though, that these diagnostic tests can be performed at the show venue. Regardless of whether the vets diagnosis on the day is correct or not, if a vet deems that cat unfit for the show it must be removed. The veterinarian is doing their best to protect your animals from acquiring conta-
gious diseases. Ultimately the responsibility lies with the exhibiter, to bring only healthy cats to the show in the first place. Below I will outline some characteristics of the common contagious diseases that could be easily spread at
a show , followed by what I look for when examining for ‘vetting in’.
COMMON CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
CAT FLU The disease ‘cat flu’ comprises a number of viruses and bacteria, each contributing to various clinical signs of disease. Cats may be affected by one or several of the disease causing agents, in addition to secon-dary bacterial infection. The clinical signs of cat flu include; sneezing, snuffles, nasal discharge, pneumo-
nia, conjunctivitis, watery eyes, gum disease and gingivitis (often with very healthy looking teeth), tongue ulcerations, appetite loss and weight loss, fever and abortion in queens. More troublesome, is that a cat may have cat flu, and be capable of spreading cat flu, w ithout having clinical signs themselves. It is im-possible to tell which cats are carriers on the day of a cat show. If any of your cats have shown any of the
signs mentioned above, particularly on a recurrent basis, it would be extremely wise not to show that indi-vidual, as it may be a carrier. Cat flu is highly contagious, even if the cat is not show ing clinical signs of dis-ease.
FLEAS Fleas will usually be very obvious to the exhibiter during show preparation, evident as the insects them-selves, or their droppings/flea dirt (tiny black particles of dried blood faeces). Fleas are able to jump in-
credible distances in relation to their tiny body size, and so can be highly contagious in a show environ-ment. They can however be easily controlled using long acting preventative products such as “Frontline”, “Advantage”, “Revolution” or “Advocate”, in addition to shorter acting products such as “Capstar”. Even the act of bathing may be helpful, but be cautions of flea shampoos and powders. Cats are highly sensi-
tive to the chemicals designed to kill fleas, so always be certain to use products specifically designed for cats, rather than smaller amounts of dog designed products.
RINGWORM
Ringworm is a highly contagious disease caused by several species of fungi. It can be very persistent and very difficult to manage in multi-cat facilities, especially in long-haired cats. It is transmitted via fungal spores, (tiny encapsulated reproductive particles) which can spread from animal to animal, or from envi-ronmental objects (eg. bowls, bedding etc). Clinical signs of ringworm in cats may be varied, but can in-
clude; poor hair coat, patches of baldness or classic circular bald spots. Theses areas may be scaly, crusty, dry, red or itchy. Some cats may show no clinical signs, but can be capable of spreading the fungus. The-ses cats would be impossible to detect at a cat show. It would be unwise to bring your seemingly healthy cat to a show if any of your other cats have lesions. Humans and other animals can also be affected. Ring-
worm will often resolve on its own, however medical treatment can hasten the recovery and reduce environmental infection.

VETTING IN (cont’d)
EAR MITES
Ear mites are tiny inhabitants of the external ear canal and sometimes neck, rump and tail. They create intensely itchy ears, often with excessive waxy discharge, or thick scaly crusts within the ear canal. Be-cause they are easily spread, and persist in the environment, it is important to treat the environment and other in contact cats.
WHAT THE VETS ARE LOOKING FOR
EYES
Eyes should be w ide, and show no evidence of squinting. There should be no discharge, and no redness to the conjunctiva (membranes around the eyes).
EARS
Ears should be clean and free of any waxy discharge and dirt. It can be normal to have a small amount of brownish coloured wax, but good grooming practices should see this removed during preliminary show preparation. If you are constantly having to clean a lot of ‘muck’ from your cats ears, it is likely there is a problem such as ear mites or a bacterial or yeast infection.
MOUTH A vet would expect a cats teeth to be bright white and clean looking. I have noted some cats to have a significant build up of plaque and tartar, often contributing to gingivitis. This is of minimal concern when
show ing a cat, but it is beneficial for your cats health to have a clean healthy mouth. However, moder-ate to severe gingivitis with otherwise clean looking teeth may be caused viruses and can be very diffi-cult to treat. These viruses may also cause tongue ulcerations, so pay close attention to your cats mouth,
particularly if the teeth look fine, and have any problems addressed by your veterinarian.
NOSE Nose should be clean and free from discharge or crustings. Watery noses may be suggestive of cat flu.
BODY Body condition, should be appropriate to breed and type, but should show evidence of good muscula-ture and health. Cats should be well covered and not boney.
COAT Coat is very variable among breeds but should show evidence of health and vitality. Dry coarse coats may be indicative of ill health. Patchy or moth-eaten coats, bald or sparsely haired areas or red or scaly
skin is suggestive of skin disease. Coats should be free from evidence of fleas and flea dirt. It is understandable that you may not have had time to perfectly present your cat by the time it is vetted in. It is also understandable that some cats do not tolerate the stress of travel very well, and may be slob-
bery or have had an ‘accident’ on the way to the show. Bearing these things in mind however, to best show your cats’ health, it ought to be clean and tidy before presentation to the vet. Having rolled in dirt in the cat run or garden could look like flea dirt. An excess of normal wax in ears could be interpreted as ear mites. Typically watery Persian or Exotic eyes and nose look very similar to a cat with cat flu. So have
your cat as clean, tidy and well presented as possible, before arriving to the show venue. I hope it has become apparent how contagious the previously mentioned diseases can be, made worse
by the fact than most of them can be spread by animals that are not even showing clinical signs. Even if the animal entered in the show is not show ing signs of being ill, they could be vessels for disease transmis-sion. Do not show your cat if any other individuals have been sick, unless instructed do so from your vet-erinarian. The show veterinarian does their best to protect all exhibitors cats from contagious diseases,
but it is the exhibitor that should be responsible for bringing only healthy cats to the venue.
