T he last week of October was a very busy time at El Castillo. Many of the outstanding construction details were completed and I am extremely happy with the results. The eight, large private rooms on the nursing floor have been finished and will begin to be occupied in the near future. The artwork has been hung on the first and second floors as well as all of the signage that is required. The patio doors in the main dining room will be locked from November 1 until April 1 so that we can cut down on the cold drafts which are a concern for your fellow residents, who sit close to the doors. Residents will not be able to enter from the patio but the doors will be useable as an emergency exit, since they have panic bars. I hope this does not inconvenience residents too much. On the other hand, the private dining room is now open and available for reservations. Please talk to Sandra about the El Castillo LifeCare Community Around El Castillo Allen Jahner, CEO Administrator NOVEMBER 2014 News of the Castle policies for use and any possible costs. Sandra will be posting the details. The Fitness Center seems to be utilized more and more every week. I am glad that so many residents are using the equipment and I am sure that it will help with their balance and strength. On that note, we are discussing the hours of operation and I hope to have some new, extended hours in place by November 15. We will post the new hours on the bulletin boards and at the Fitness Center. Other areas to be opened are the Library and the Café. The library still has mechanical equipment (HVAC), counters, cabinets, computers, reading machines and books to be installed. The mechanical equipment alone will not be here until mid-November so the opening will be about December 1. The Café is going to be later since some equipment has just been ordered and will take about 4-6 weeks to arrive. I want to have staff trained and menus put together before the opening. I believe the earliest opening will be about January 15, after the holiday rush. About two weeks ago, I nominated Lorin Abbey our Senior Living Counselor and Development Coordinator, as Santa Fe Business Woman of the Year sponsored by the Santa Fe Business and Professional Woman’s organization. There were nine nominees in total and I felt that Lorin was not only an excellent candidate but also a great representative for El Castillo. Unfortunately, she was not the chosen one but with all of the talented women who were nominated, she stood out as a true professional. Congratulations, Lorin! Welcome, New Resident!

Mac (Malcolm) and Josie represent half of the

Ozeltons living in the USA. The other half is their sons, David and Steven. Mac tells how the old English name morphed: “A guy named Ralph Osselton got married in the 1830s. Somebody in the Registry couldn’t read his name,

and it came out as Ozelton.” These days, there are Ozeltons (still pronounced “Osselton”) all over the UK, but only one Ozelton family in the States. Mac was a war baby in Lancaster, as was Josie in Birmingham. They met in 1960. She worked for the government; he was “a young lad with a lot of hair” studying at the University of Birmingham. Josie’s sister gave her a ticket to a “fancy ball,” so she went—dressed to the nines—only to find it wasn’t a big deal. “Mac took pity on me!” Mac tells it differently: “She stood out, because she was blonde and looked great dressed in black when everybody else was in white.” They married in 1965, right before he earned his Ph.D. in metallurgy and material science and

then accepted a job in Minnesota. They arrived in Minneapolis on a -30° day in December 1966 and experienced culture shock related to the cold and the food, but soon they adapted and made friends. The next few years brought two sons, two stints in southern California separated by a stint back in England and six years in tiny, rural Florence, South Carolina, where Steven was held up as an example in class. “You should all speak English like Steven,” his teacher announced. Josie recalls, “He lost his English accent overnight!” Mac says, “We knew we weren’t going to spend the rest of our lives in Florence.” They retired in 1999-2000 and, after enjoying vacations in Santa Fe, moved here in 2005. Josie says they came “for adventure.” Mac was fed up with LA traffic, and Santa Fe houses seemed a bargain. “Our flabber was gasted!” Since then, they’ve traveled extensively. Before moving to El Castillo this summer, they enjoyed an around-the-world cruise. Now they look forward to a half-way-round-the-world cruise next spring.

Meet the El Castillo Board of Directors Elkie Kleinman

Cheri was born and raised on a farm in a remote part of Idaho, where getting

to go to town was a big deal. As she puts it, “I grew up doing the things you do on a farm, like milking cows, irrigating, etc., and also riding horses, which I didn’t even particularly enjoy!” Before making Santa Fe home in 1977, Cheri lived in Charleston, SC where her first daughter was born and

then later, her second daughter was born in Juneau, AK, the other side of the United States. She went back to school as a single mother, moving from banking to Trust and Estate Administration. Her vast experience includes the start-up and management of a trust department. In the 1990’s Cheri became a Certified Financial

Cheri Briscoe

Planner. She currently works for an independent trust company. Her husband, also the father of two, and she enjoy six grandchildren between them. They share the love of dance and travel, though Cheri admits to have more of the “travel bug.” They have been abroad to such places as France, Argentina and China and look forward to their next adventure. She also appreciates the out of doors – gardening and walking her dog. A resident nominated Cheri to the El Castillo Board of Directors. She loves El Castillo, not only because she has so many friends here but because she can see what it does for the residents who live here. The warmth of both the staff and the residents gives her peace of mind as a board member. Her joy is in knowing that El Castillo is such a wonderful home to all who live here.

Hope This Information Doesn’t Put You to Sleep….

“Agood laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book,” (Irish Proverb) – a truer statement than most of us imagine. For those

of you who have no trouble going to sleep, staying asleep and waking up refreshed, you are lucky! Sleep is a basic human need, just as breathing, eating and drinking, it is vital for good health.

Unfortunately, an estimated 50-70 million people suffer from chronic sleep disorders, which affects getting enough quality/healthy sleep.

Sleep apnea, “an involuntary cessation of breathing that occurs while asleep,” affects more than 18 million people (National Sleep Foundation). Obstructed sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common of the three types but all cause the person sleeping to stop breathing repeatedly, often hundreds of times during the night, for 10 seconds and sometimes for a minute or longer. Left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious and life-threatening consequences including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, memory problems, weight gain, depression and other ailments.

Some signs and symptoms that may suggest you are suffering from sleep apnea include: excessive daytime sleepiness; difficulty concentrating during the day; snoring, loud enough to wake yourself up; falling asleep sitting, reading, watching television; and waking with a headache, dry mouth or sore throat. If you think that you might have a sleep disorder, the American Sleep Apnea Association has several simple tests that you can take (copies are at the front desk), but they suggest that one of the best tests may be “a complaint by your bed partner that you snore loudly or that you stop breathing repeatedly while you are asleep.”

Fortunately, once diagnosed, there are several treatment options and one that will work best for you. In the meantime:

ED BIELASKI, the ever-entertaining and excellent physical therapist, is back! He will present his ever-informative, interactive program focusing on preventing falls. Everyone can benefit from this presentation.

TEN COMMANDMENTS OF HEALTHY SLEEP 1. Fix regular times for going to bed and for getting up. 2. If you nap during the day, don’t allow yourself more than 45

minutes of sleeping time. 3. Stop consuming alcoholic beverages four hours before bedtime

and don’t smoke at all. 4. Avoid caffeine beginning six hours before bedtime. This includes

coffee, tea, many soft drinks and chocolate as well. 5. Avoid heavy, spicy, or sugary foods starting four hours before

bedtime. A light snack just before retiring is okay. 6. Exercise regularly but not right before bed. 7. Use comfortable bedding. 8. Find a comfortable temperature setting for your bedroom, and

keep the room well ventilated. 9. Block out distracting noise and eliminate as much light as possible.10. Reserve your bed for sleep and sex. It is not an office, a

workroom, a movie theater, or TV viewing venue.American Sleep Apnea Association

Landscaping News Arlena Teitlebaum

We are all enjoying the last of the fall blooms and gorgeous array of deciduous leaves

– the Prunus in the West Courtyard, the Acer in the Center courtyard and the radiance of the Cottonwoods at the river. All of the trees and shrubs have been deep fertilized and we are midway in the fall fertilizing/winterizing of the perennials. The irrigation system has been winterized and we will

I thought I had completed my last carving

commission. I was looking forward to producing a few more gifts to family members. The 18 carvings I had created over the years had been a most satisfying and rewarding pursuit. Sometime during the Christmas season of 2013, Grace and I visited an Albuquerque couple, both

of whom are first generation Chinese-American. We had become fast friends early in our 30 year relationship. At one point during our visit, I announced my plans to curtail my carving efforts in the not too distant future. “D” promptly stated that they hoped that I would do a piece for them before

Memories of China Glenn Whitecotten

I stopped carving. After a pause, during which “oh dear” came quickly to mind, my further thoughts rapidly segued to my asking if they had a theme or subject in mind. Both answered no, but “D” looked at me and said “why don’t you develop a topic from your experience rather from ours.” No time constraints for the completion had been suggested; I could work at my accustomed pace, “dead slow” as the Brits would say. After a week or two (perhaps three) of rumination on various theme possibilities, I realized that “D’s” suggestion was the correct one. The theme would be China. Neither of our friends had visited mainland China. I, on the other hand, had toured there twice (1981 and 2005). I sifted through my recollections of China… prominent among them: Beijing, The Spirit Way, the Ming Tombs and the Great Wall… and the carving began!

Glenn is an artist extraordinaire. A member of the art class, he has wowed us with his beautiful watercolor paintings. But another one of his talents is in wood carving. He displayed his latest work at our Art Show, detailed and intricate, a show stopper for sure. Here is the story:

As usual, I marvel that November is already here… though it shouldn’t be such a wonder since every store in town is now featuring Thanksgiving and Christmas

paraphernalia! The Resident Art Show was a great success. Congratulations to art instructor Christy and the artists who participated, you outdid yourselves! If you were inspired by the show, join the class. It meets Wednesdays, 10am-noon in the Community Room. Christy is an excellent teacher and art experience is NOT required! Also, I want to encourage anyone who hasn’t been to the fitness center or is hesitant at all, to come for a visit. It is just a really happy space where you can work out (or not), socialize (or not), or visit for a change of scenery. Happy Thanksgiving!

A s of October 24 we have 87 members, five new orientations in progress and two Assisted Living residents scheduled! Ladies outnumber the men, 60 to 27

but no matter, everyone seems to have fun while getting in shape. I know I love it! The gym officially opened on August 18 and on August 26, we had our first

graduates (completed three orientations). We currently have seven residents who have 20+ visits, though many others are catching up! Welcamp is interested in how we are doing. Satisfaction Surveys are in the gym through November 14 - so if you haven’t already filled one out, we appreciate your feedback. We invite everyone to join us in our happy and supportive fitness center.

The Transportation Committee continues to be interested in

requests from residents for community events of interest. In October, transportation was provided to view the Aspens, dinner at Jinja and a trip to Las Vegas, NM to tour historic homes and buildings. If you have an idea, share it with Amy Zaharlick, Joan Bohlin, Charles Cole or Gerry McKinney. The farther in advance of an event you can let us know, the better.

Good news from the Resident Garden Committee! Louise Leopold, Jozsie Ozelton and Suzanne Wollter planted six dozen spring bulbs mid-October. We will all appreciate their efforts this spring.
