This jersey is an evolution of our pro racing jersey from just four years ago. It’s also our first aero race jersey that didn’t get retired when the next generation of faster, more aero jerseys came along.

The Aero Race 4.0 Jersey was very fast but also an amazing mix of classic good looks and a stretchy fit that works on a lot of body types, not just the skinny racer. For the 4.1 version we’ve taken it a different direction, away from pro racing, by giving it the convenience features that seamed superfluous when we designed the 4.0 to win the Giro d’Italia.

This updated jersey gets a zippered rear pocket, a flap behind the zipper to protect your neck, updated Velocity dimpled fabric on the front and an angled pocket for easier access. This makes it the one ideal jersey for all your rides, whether you’re sprinting for the win or trying to survive the Sunday group ride.

We’ve done a lot of work on making the best lightweight and ventilated jersey for WorldTour racing. So we turned our attention to using some of that technology to make an extremely lightweight jersey for everyday use. We’ve added a key pocket, gripper elastic around the waist and protection from the zip at the top—little details that aren’t essential

for pro racing but are nice when you’re on your own Tour de Wherever epic challenge. We’ve used our new lightweight and ultra-wicking 50 g/m2 Futura fabric, and we employed a couple of tricks to support the pockets, with a 3D mesh liner on the back and our stretch woven waistband to keep the pockets secure.

YOU COULD FEEL IT COMINGThe inspiration for this jersey came while riding Switzerland’s Flüela Pass between Davos and the Engadin Valley. The air is thin as you approach this 2383m pass, and I was pushing hard on a 230km ride. I could hear the winding engine of the supercar coming up the valley, and before it reached me I could actually feel the rumble as it approached

redline. That Lamborghini Superleggera was a road-going version of Formula One technology, and this jersey represents the same the concept. Here we are using technologies and know-how developed for the highest levels of pro racing, adapted into an extremely lightweight and aero road-going jersey. We’ve used bits of our 50g stretch woven fabric, our ultralight and ultra-wicking Futura 50g fabric on the front and sleeves, and a 3D mesh fabric liner on the back to support the pockets, and added a handy zippered key pocket for some creature comforts. 81g

WE CANWe made a water-repellent jersey. You probably didn’t know you needed it. It’s not windproof, it’s not thermal and it doesn’t replace a jacket; it simply sheds most of the water should you get caught in a summer rain shower. This is a step toward a future in which you’ll just assume all your cycling gear is water repellent, just like you expect it to wick moisture away today.

A few years back it was a bit of a joke in the pro peloton when some riders would wear all black to avoid detection. We developed the Vortex dimpled fabric for the side panels and the new structured GiroAir leg band that helps induce turbulence to improve penetration through the air. In fact, our wind tunnel testing of the 2015 Cannondale-Garmin team-issue Free short showed a 10-watt improvement from the 2014 Body Paint bibshort at 50 km/h. That’s the same fast short that you can get in three different graphic treatments or in a custom design through our Servizio Corse program.

Six-hour races or training rides mean everything has to be right. Our Progetto X2 Air seat pad went through five modifications to improve it for this short. The race fit follows your every move. And we engineered a new bib strap yoke to better follow your body when in the cycling position. Seams are flat to prevent irritation.

There’s no denying that the Gabba short-sleeved race jacket has been a game changer in pro cycling. Most of the peloton pulls it out whenever the weather is cold or wet. But sometimes the Gabba is too warm. Its allover protection can make it feel too hot for racing in cool conditions, so some of our Team Cannondale-Garmin riders asked for protection like the Gabba but with more breathability for milder conditions.

Enter the Perfetto Light. It has the same cut as the Gabba, and allover water protection, but only the front is in Windstopper® fabric. The front is made in a Windstopper® fabric that’s 20 percent lighter than the Gabba. Then on the back we use our Nano Light Pro fabric, which is highly water repellent and stretchy but has no membrane to inhibit air exchange. The fabric is very tightly knit so you don’t feel the wind coming through, but it is open enough to prevent the moisture buildup that can happen with the Gabba during intense efforts or when the temperature rises.

At first look you would think that this piece sits between the Gabba Jacket and the Fawesome Vest. Before we tried it, we thought it would be a nice-to-have garment for the pros for warmer wet races. But instead we found a new product type that covers 90 percent of the Gabba conditions and 90 percent of the Fawesome conditions and is the ideal garment for spring or fall rides, with or without rain, with an extremely wide comfort range.

Perfetto means “perfect” in Italian. That’s the word that keeps coming out when wearing this jacket in a very wide range of conditions.

It was the pros who first asked for a Gabba that’s not as hot as the Gabba but warmer than the Fawesome Vest. So we started from the Gabba and made the back in Nano Light fabric -- the same fabric as our Nano Flex tights but without the brushed fleece inside.

This gives the piece a lot of breathability and keeps you from overheating inside. We further lightened it up by using a lighter weight of Windstopper® (a full 25% lighter than the one used on the Gabba) on the front.

You make think that this is filling a very small niche. But just try it. It can cover most of the conditions of the Gabba (except wet racing and very cold), yet it handles warmer temperatures better. And the fit is exceptional, which is one more reason you’ll keep reaching for it.

The consensus of our Castelli test crew is that this piece doesn’t fully replace the Gabba or Fawesome, but it’s another arrow in your quiver that is ideally suited to cool temperatures, especially when it’s dry or there’s a risk of light rain.

COOLAND/OR WETSPRING DAYSWe made this short for spring conditions, when your riding goes from long winter rides in tights to higher intensity, and you’re riding no matter the weather. This short is made with our Nano Light Pro fabric, an unbrushed version of our Nano Flex fabric. This fabric has a tighter weave so it keeps out more water, and the 270 g weight makes this good for cool weather as well as providing great muscle support. We’ve minimized the seams to help keep the water out and provided reflective logos for extra visibility. When we developed the original Gabba with the Cervélo TestTeam we knew it would be ideal for cold and wet racing. The first few years it remained a niche product for pro racers and a few people who understood how good it was in the wet.

THE ART OF PACKINGAll successful pros have to master the art of packing a rain bag very early in their careers. For the pros, the rain bag is a vital piece of equipment in which they stash all the clothes and accessories that will keep them warmer or drier if the weather turns nasty. Riders will fall back to the team car and ask for gloves, jackets or booties, and then the mechanic in the car will have to be able to find the right pieces very quickly.

As I learned when I was a pro, preparation and organization are essential. This bag is one of my favorite products because the red lining and all the mesh pockets make it extremely easy to find everything when you need it. The flip-open top with zip mesh pockets is a great idea that solves the problem of trying to find small accessories in the bottom of a bag.

Even though I don’t put my Race Rain Bag into the team car anymore, it is still a great way to keep extra clothes, accessories and shoes organized for everyday training or when I am traveling. The bottom shoe compartment is great for quick access if the mechanic needs to get to the shoes after a crash, but for me I like that it can be separated when I travel. I was really surprised how much I can actually fit into the bag and how easy it is to find what I need.

Choosing the right race clothing is an individual matter, and sometimes athletes make the decision without any valid reason—giving no thought to aerodynamics, fabrics, seat pad and so on.

I’d call myself quite picky when it comes to choosing the perfect equipment, and I spare no effort to improve my material. During my career, I’ve done countless aero testing sessions and know that bare skin isn’t really fast, but the central issue is fit. A race combo has to fit really well so that no unwanted aero drag is caused.

The T1:Stealth Top is a piece I’ve always wanted to have as an option.I was involved in the development process of that top from the very beginning. In Kona 2013 a prototype made a decisive contribution to improve my bike split by almost 9 minutes.

Its short-sleeved construction not only provides great aerodynamics; it also protects me from the sun, and, soaked with water, it really is a great tool for keeping cool. That’s the main reason I sometimes even wear it for running.

But it also works in the opposite way: at cool temperatures I sometimes see it as an additional protection layer and wear it over my race suit. The full zip helps regulate my body temperature and makes the top trouble-free to put on in the hectic activity of T1.

The fact that it offers the same two back pockets as my race suit means it is really easy to stow away and organize my nutrition or GPS trasmitter for life timing.

The pockets provide lots of space and keep everything in place securely without causing disadvantageous drag.

The T1:Stealth Top is so versatile that I sometimes find myself wearing it as a cycling jersey for my training sessions on the bike.

If you don’t want to go the aero benefits and

comfort of your Sanremo, try this (optional:

underneath your swimskin):

1. Unzip your Sanremo SS and roll it down to

the waist.

2. Fold back the sleeves, inside out, and stow

them so that they don’t slow you down in the

water (best underneath your legal swimskin).

3. You can easily slide into the sleeves of the

Sanremo Short Sleeve in T1 and benefit from

the performance advantage for the rest of

the race.

1. WASHING

Washing instructions are printed on a white tag inside each piece of clothing. Following these instructions will help make sure that your gear will last as long as possible. Careful washing and maintenance will ensure the highest performance from your Castelli products and extend their useful life span.

1. Always read the care label before washing a piece of clothing.2. Close all zips and Velcro fasteners and turn the garment inside out.3. Hand or machine wash on a lukewarm permanent press cycle (max. 40°C / 104°F)4. Use a small amount of liquid detergent, not powder detergents or any products that contain fabric softeners, conditioners, stain removers or bleach as they will affect garment performance.5. Hang dry or dry flat. Do not tumble dry.6. Castelli Nano Flex products and softshell jackets and wind vests can be tumbled dry on low heat for about 20 minutes to rejuvenate the water repellent finish.

2. HOW TO WASH NANO FLEX PRODUCTS

To prolong the life of your Castelli Nano Flex garments, we recommend washing the products by hand or on a regular cycle in cool water, followed by line drying (we recommend washing most cycling apparel this way).

1. Hand or machine wash on a lukewarm permanent press cycle (max. 40°C / 104°F).2. Use a small amount of liquid detergent, not powder detergents or any products that contain fabric softeners, conditioners, stain removers or bleach as they will affect garment performance.3. Do not use a fabric softener! This can destroy wicking and water-repellent treatments.4. Hang dry or dry flat. Do not tumble dry.5. If necessary to reactive the water repellency, you can also tumble dry on low heat for about 20 minutes. If unable to tumble dry, iron the dry garment on gentle setting (warm, no steam) by placing a towel or cloth between the garment and the iron. Do not iron over the heat-transfer Castelli and Nano Flex letters.

4. WHAT TO DO WHEN A NANO FLEX PRODUCT LOSE ITS WATER REPELLENCY

The Castelli Nano Flex fabric repels water through both a DWR finish and thanks to millions of ultra-tiny nanofilaments that cause water droplets to bead up on the surface of the garment and run off instead of pooling on the fabric and soaking through. The Nano Flex treatment will last approximately 40-50 washes. (Of course, the garment must be washed correctly; if the detergent contains fabric softener the treatment will disappear immediately).

REACTIVATING THE NANO FLEX WATER REPELLENCYThere are two ways to re-treat your Castelli Nano Flex garment and restore the water-resistant finish.

1. Apply a commercially available water-repellent spray-on softshell treatment agent. (See above for spray-on water-repellent treatment instructions.)2. If necessary to reactive the water repellency, you can also tumble dry on low heat for about 20 minutes. If unable to tumble dry, iron the dry garment on gentle setting (warm, no steam) by placing a towel or cloth between the garment and the iron. Do not iron over the heat-transfer Castelli and Nano Flex letters.

3. WATER REPELLENCYWHAT TO DO WHEN A CASTELLI SOFTSHELL GARMENT STARTS TO ABSORB WATER

WHAT TO DO WHEN A CASTELLI SOFTSHELL GARMENT STARTS TO ABSORB WATERCastelli breathable softshell garments have been treated with a durable water-repellant (DWR) finish, which keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job. If the outer fabric starts to absorb water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability as well as reducing water proofing.

The outer coating needs to be replenished periodically to keep it from picking up water and dirt. You can rejuvenate the DWR finish by putting the garment in the dryer at low heat for about 20 minutes, or by ironing under low heat being careful not to melt the synthetic fibers of your garment.

The DWR finish will wear off over time and you may want to re-treat your Castelli product’s water repellency by applying a commercially available water-repellent spray-on DWR treatment by following these instructions:

MAKE SURE THE GARMENT HAS BEEN CLEANED PROPERLYYour Castelli softshell garment could be soaking up water just because it is dirty. First, try cleaning it. If it is fairly new or recently re-waterproofed, the DWR will be revitalized just from cleaning. But once the garment has been thoroughly worn, you will need to restore the water-resistant finish using a spray-on softshell treatment agent. Make sure to clean the garment first.

SPRAY-ON WATER-REPELLENT TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

1. Make sure the garment has been cleaned properly and is dry.2. Lay the garment out flat and spray the entire outer shell with the water-repellent finish, holding the bottle 15 cm from the surface.3. Allow the water-repellent finish to soak in for 10-15 minutes.4. Wipe off excess water-repellent finish with a damp cloth. Check carefully to make sure no areas have been missed.

Remember, the garment will not become waterproof, but it will take longer for water to penetrate the outer fabric.
