XD 171/172 Science Highlights

Sept 4 (doy 248): Cassini begins an 18 day period of interdisciplinary science during the

apoapsis period between revs 171 and 172. UVIS performs a 4h calibration using the

star, Spica. ISS, CIRS and VIMS then perform another observation in the Titan monitoring

campaign (phase 42.2 and range 2 Mkm).

Sept 5 (doy 249): The Cassini Plasma Spectrometer Subsystem (CAPS) orients the

spacecraft for 11h in order to observe the descending ring plane crossing at 20 Rs. CAPS

then performs a 4h calibration of its ion beam spectrometer and its ion mass

spectrometer.

Sept 6 (doy 250): The Cassini spacecraft remains earth-pointed in order to rest the reaction

wheels.

Sept 7 (doy 251): ISS, CIRS and VIMS perform another observation in the Titan monitoring

campaign (phase 74.5 and range 2.3 Mkm). ISS and UVIS then observe the irregular

moon, Bestia, for 10.5h.

Sept 8 (doy 252): ISS performs another observation in their Satellite Orbit Campaign. ISS

and UVIS then observe the irregular moon, Bestia, for 11h.

Sept 9 (doy 253): ISS observes the irregular moon, Bestia, for 13h.

Sept 10 (doy 254): ISS, CIRS and VIMS perform another observation in the Titan monitoring

campaign (phase 91.5 and range 1.7 Mkm). CDA performs a 6h interstellar dust

observation.

XD 171/172 Science Highlights

Sept 11 (doy 255): ISS, CIRS and VIMS perform another observation in the Titan monitoring

campaign (phase 90 and range 1.6 Mkm). CDA performs an 11.5h interstellar dust

observation.

Sept 12 (doy 256): ISS, CIRS and VIMS perform another observation in the Titan monitoring

campaign (phase 83.2 and range 1.5 Mkm). CDA performs a 12h interstellar dust

observation.

Sept 13 (doy 257): ISS, CIRS and VIMS perform another observation in the Titan monitoring campaign (phase 73.6 and range 1.6 Mkm). CDA performs a 12h interstellar dust

observation.

Sept 14 (doy 258): CDA performs a 13h interstellar dust observation.

Sept 15 (doy 259): The Magnetometer performs an 8h calibration while rolling about the X-

axis of the spacecraft.

Sept 16 (doy 260): CDA performs a 13.5h interstellar dust observation.

Sept 17 (doy 261): ISS performs another observation in their Satellite Orbit Campaign.

VIMS and CIRS observe the dark side of the rings for 11h.

Sept 18 (doy 262): CDA performs a 6h interstellar dust observation. ISS performs another

observation in their Satellite Orbit Campaign. ISS begins an 11h movie of the lit face of

the rings at high phase in order to observe spokes.

XD 171/172 Science Highlights

Sept 19 (doy 263): ISS completes the 11h movie of the lit face of the rings at high phase in

order to observe spokes. After a 9h downlink using a 34m antenna at the Madrid

complex, ISS begins a 10.5h spoke movie.

Sept 20 (doy 264): ISS completes the 10.5h spoke movie. ISS, CIRS and VIMS perform

another observation in the Titan monitoring campaign (phase 89.6 and range 2.8 Mkm).

Sept 21 (doy 265): ISS, CIRS and VIMS observe the F-Ring for 13h.

Sept 22 (doy 266): CIRS observes Saturn for 13.5h in order to measure oxygen compounds

(H2O, CO2) in the stratosphere.
