Hal MooreA Soldier Onceand AlwaysMike Guardia

Hal Moore, one of the most admired American combat leaders of the last 50 years, has until nowbeen best known to the public for being portrayed by Mel Gibson in the movie We Were Soldiers. In this first-ever, fully illustrated biography, we finally learn the full story of one of Americas truemilitary heroes.

A 1945 graduate of West Point, Moores first combats occurred during the Korean War, where hefought in the battles of Old Baldy, T-Bone, and Pork Chop Hill. At the beginning of the VietnamWar, Moore commanded the 1st Battalion of the 7th Cavalry in the first full-fledged battlebetween U.S. and North Vietnamese regulars. Drastically outnumbered and nearly overrun, Mooreled from the front, and though losing 79 soldiers, accounted for 1,200 of the enemy before theCommunists withdrew. This Battle of Ia Drang pioneered the use of air mobile infantrydelivering troops into battle via helicopterwhich became the staple of U.S. operations for theremainder of the war. He later wrote of his experiences in the best-selling book, We Were SoldiersOnceand Young.

Following his tour in Vietnam, he assumed command of the 7th Infantry Division, forward-stationed in South Korea, and in 1971, he took command of the Army Training Center at Fort Ord,California. In this capacity, he oversaw the US Armys transition from a conscript-based to an all-volunteer force. He retired as a Lieutenant General in 1977.

Fighting Fox CompanyThe Battling Flank of the Band of BrothersBill BrownTerry Poyser

Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division hasbecome one of the most famous small units in U.S. history, thanks to Stephen Ambroses superbbook Band of Brothers, followed by portrayals in film. However, to date little has been heard of FoxCompany of that same regimentthe men who fought alongside Easy Company through everystep of the war in Europe, and who had their own stories to tell.

Notably this book, over a decade in the making, came about for different reasons than the fame ofthe Band of Brothers. Bill Brown, a WWII vet himself, had decided to research the fate of achildhood friend who had served in Fox Company. Along the way he met Terry Poyser, who was ona similar mission to research the combat death of a Fox Company man from his hometown.Together, the two authors proceeded to locate and interview every surviving Fox Company vet theycould find. The result was a wealth of fascinating firsthand accounts of WWII combat as well asnew perspectives on Dick Winters and others of the Band, who had since become famous.

Told primarily through the words of participants, Fighting Fox Company takes the reader throughsome of the most horrific close-in fighting of the war, beginning with the chaotic nocturnalparatrooper drop on D-Day. After fighting through Normandy the drop into Holland saw prolongedferocious combat, and even more casualties; and then during the Battle of the Bulge, Fox Companytook its place in line at Bastogne during one of the most heroic against-all-odds stands in U.S.history.

The Devils GeneralThe Life of Hyazinth Graf Strachwitz - the Panzer GrafRaymond Bagdonas

This is the story of the highly decorated German regimental commander of World War II, known asthe Panzer Graf. An aristocratic Silesian, Strachwitz first won the Iron Cross in the Great War. Afterfighting with the Freikorps, he was serving with the 1st Panzer Division when the Polish campaigninaugurated World War II.

Leading from the front, his exploits as commander of a panzer battalion earned him furtherdecorations during the French campaign. Transferred to the newly formed 16th Panzer Division, heparticipated in the invasion of Yugoslavia and then Operation Barbarossa where he earned theKnights Cross. The following year, he won the Oak Leaves for destroying 270 Soviet tanks atKalach. Now commander of a regiment, he reached the Volga and fought on the northern rim ofSixth Armys perimeter. Wounded during the battles, he was flown out of the Stalingrad pocketand was spared the fate of the rest of Sixth Army.

Upon recuperation, he was named commander of the Grossdeutschland Divisions panzerregiment, and won the Swords to the Knights Cross during Mansteins counteroffensive at Kharkov. After fighting through Kursk and the ensuing defensive battles, he was transferred the next year toArmy Group North where he won the Diamonds to the Knights Cross at Narva.

For the rest of the war, he commanded ad hoc battlegroups, and pioneered the formation of tankhunter brigades, consisting of deep-penetration infantry armed with panzerfausts and otherdemolitions who would ambush Soviet tanks. Wounded 12 times during the war, he was finallyable to surrender to the Americans in May 1945.

7 Leadership LessonsLeadership, Liberty, and the American RevolutionJohn Antal

This book is about seven defining leadership moments from the American Revolution. 7 LeadershipLessons is not a complete study of the American Revolution; readers will have to go elsewhere forsuch a chronicle. Rather it is the story of seven leadership moments that helped to win libertyduring the struggle for Independence. On these pages you learn about real people facing realchallenges and overcoming what reasonable observers believed were insurmountable odds. Theseleaders, thankfully, were unreasonable for the cause of liberty.

This work is a guide to learning about the leadership that created a revolution, opposed GreatBritain, the greatest power of its age, and created the freest society on earth. In these pages youare able to study the leadership of a select few who changed the course of human events andhelped bring about the birth of an exceptional nation. This is a compact collection of stories thatretell some of the most dramatic events in the founding of the United States. These storiesforleadership is best learned by storytelling, rather than through lectures on process, style, ortechniqueoffer you insights into the meaning of leadership and liberty that can change yourlife.

These seven leadership lessons are as relevant today as they were essential to the birth of theUnited States. The stories are about the leadership that forged colonial British subjects into anation of Americans. They define the leadership that hammered out the standard for howAmericans are expected to lead. In 1775, this leadership created the flame of liberty that lit theworld, and offered a beacon of freedom and human progress to all men.

The Fights on the Little Horn50 Years of Research into Custers Last StandGordon Harper

This remarkable book synthesizes a lifetime of research into one of Americas most storieddisasters, the defeat of Custers 7th Cavalry.

The author spent countless hours on the battlefield itself and researched every iota of evidence ofthe fight from both sides. He was thus able to recreate every step of the battle, dispelling mythsand falsehoods along the way. Harper passed away in 2006, leaving behind nearly two millionwords of research and writing. In this book, his work has been condensed for the general public toobserve his key findings and the crux of his narrative on the course of the battle.

One of his first observations is that the fight took place along the Little Horn Riverits junctionwith the Big Horn was miles away so that the term for the battle, Little Big Horn has always beena misnomer. He traces the activities of Benteens battalion on that day, and why it could nevercome to Custers reinforcement. He describes Renos desperate fight, as well as how that unnervedofficer benefited from the unexpected heroism of his men.

Indian accounts come to the fore especially during Custers part of the fight, because no whitesoldier survived it. However, analysis of the forensic evidence plus the locations of bodies assist indrawing an accurate scenario of how the final scene unfolded. It may indeed be clearer now than itwas to the doomed 7th Cavalrymen at the time, who through the dust and smoke and Indiansseeming to rise by hundreds from the ground, only gradually realized the extent of the disaster.

Unsung EaglesTrue Stories of Americas Citizen Airmen in the Skies of World War IIJay Stout

The nearly half-million American aircrewmen who served during World War II have almostdisappeared. And so have their stories.

Award-winning writer and former fighter pilot Jay A. Stout uses Unsung Eagles to save an excitingcollection of those accounts from oblivion. These are not rehashed tales from the hoary icons of thewar. Rather, they are stories from the masses of largely unrecognized men whoin theaggregateactually won it. They are the recollections of your Uncle Frank who shared them onlyafter having enjoyed a beer or nine, and of your old girlfriends grandfather who passed awayabout the same time she dumped you. And of the craggy guy who ran the towns salvage yard; adusty, fly-specked B-24 model hung over the counter. These are everyman accounts that areimportant but fast disappearing.

Ray Crandall describes how he was nearly knocked into the Pacific by a heavy cruisers mainbattery during the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea. Jesse Barker tells of dodging navalbombardments in the stinking mud of Guadalcanal. Bob Popeney relates how his friend andfellow A-20 pilot was blown out of formation by German antiaircraft fire: I could see the inside ofthe airplaneand I could see Nordstroms eyes. He looked confusedand then immediately heflipped up and went tumbling down.

The combat careers of 22 different pilots from all the services are captured in this crisply writtenbook which captivates the reader not only as an engaging oral history, but also puts personalcontext into the air battles of World War II.

Second FrontThe Allied Invasion of France, 1942-43 (An Alternative History)Alexander M. Grace

One of the great arguments of World War II took place among Allied military leaders over whenand where to launch a second front against Germany in Europe. Stalin, holding on by his teeth inRussia, urged a major invasion from the west. The Americans, led by Marshall and Wedemeyer, argued likewise. It was Churchill who got his way, however, with his Mediterranean strategy, including a campaign on the Italian peninsula, which he mistakenly called the soft underbelly ofEurope.

This realistic, fact-based work posits what would have happened had Churchill been overruled, andthat rather than invading North Africa in the fall of 1942, thence Sicily and Italy, the Allies had hitthe coast of southern France instead. The key element that enables the alternative scenario is thecooperation of Vichy, which was negotiated at the time but refused. If the Allies had promisedsufficient force to support the French, however, the entire southern coastline of France would havebeen undefended against a surprise invasion.

In this book, once the Allied armies are ashore, Germans stream toward the front, albeit through agauntlet of Maquis, Allied paratroopers and airpower. Meantime the Allied forces push up theRhne Valley and titanic armored clashes take place near Lyons. Already in desperate straits atStalingrad, where they had committed their air and armored reserves, the Germans had also yet toswitch to a full total-war economy, with tanks like the Panther and Tiger not yet deployed.

This fascinating alternative history comes close to informing us exactly what might have happenedhad D-Day in Europe come as early as some had wished.

Da Nang DiaryA Forward Air Controllers Gunsight View of Combat in VietnamTom Yarborough

Originally published in 1991, this classic work has now been revised and updated with additionalphotos, many of them in color. It is the story of how, in Vietnam, an elite group of Air Force pilotsfought a secret air war in Cessna 0-2 and OV-10 Bronco prop planesflying as low as they couldget. The eyes and ears of the fast-moving jets who rained death and destruction down on enemypositions, the Forward Air Controller made an art form out of an air strikeknowing the targets, knowing where friendly troops were, and reacting with split-second, life and death decisions as abattle unfolded.

The expertise of the low, slow FACs, as well as the hazard attendant to their role, made for aunique birds-eye perspective on how the entire war in Vietnam unfolded. For Tom Yarborough, who logged 1,500 hours of combat flying time, the risk was constant, intense and electrifying. Amember of the super-secret Prairie Fire unit, Yarborough became one of the most frequentlyshot-up pilots flying out of Da Nangengaging in a series of dangerous secret missions in Laos.In this work, the reader flies in the cockpit alongside Yarborough in his adrenaline-pumpingchronicle of heroism, danger and wartime brotherhood. From the rescuing of downed pilots totaking out enemy positions, to the most harrowing extended missions directly overhead of theNVA, here is the dedication, courage and skill of the fliers who took the war into the enemysbackyard.

It was not long before midnight on 17 May1943 when the inhabitants of Gnne, theGerman village close to the Mhne Dam,heard the air raid warnings. It was widely regarded as a precautionarymeasure, but ninety minutes later, an immense tidal wave was roaringdown the valley towards them. Guy Gibson, who led X Squadron of 19specially adapted Lancasters equipped with Barnes Walliss bouncingbomb, knew that the odds were stacked against him and his men. Some, like Squadron Leader Young, would return home as heroes.Others, like Pilot Officer Byers and his crew, would not. A small numberof those involved would survive crashed aircraft and live out the war inPOW camps. The Dam Busters raids have gone down as the most famousair strikes in history. Yet behind the story of courage and determinationthere lies another, darker side, both for the aircrews and for those wholived below the dams in the path of the flood.

Barnes Wallis was the most famousinventor and designer of the Second WorldWar. Thanks to the film and book of TheDam Busters, he is still a household name today. His story is not just ofthe bouncing bombs that destroyed the Mhne and Eder dams but alsoof the other devices he invented, from the Wellington bomber to theUpkeep, Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs that this book is about. Walliswas one of the most prolific inventors of armaments during the war, andhis Highball, Upkeep and Tallboy bombs, as well as the truly massiveGrand Slam earthquake bombs, helped to destroy such high-profiletargets as the Bielefeld viaduct and led to the eventual sinking of theGerman battleship Tirpitz. His bombs were only eclipsed in destructivepower by the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki inAugust 1945.

The story of Douglas Bader, the RAF fighter pilotwho shot down twenty enemy fighters during theSecond World War despite having lost both hislegs, defies fiction. A fighter ace and highly decorated war hero, hisname remains the one the public associate most with the Battle ofBritain. That he overcame his disability and flew into battle is trulyremarkable. Baders first aerial victory a Messerschmitt 109 wasrecorded over Dunkirk on 1 June 1940. During the subsequent Battle ofBritain, Bader claimed the destruction of seven more enemy aircraft. The legless airman was rich material for the propagandists, who lost notime in manipulating his exploits to increase Britains morale.

Although there were more Hawker Hurricanesthan Supermarine Spitfires engaged in the conflictfought over England in 1940, the publics imagination was captured bythe Spitfire. According to legend, the Hurricane executed far greaterdamage on the enemy than all other defenses combined. New researchconfirms that the Spitfire, although less in number, was in fact supreme, and destroyed an equal number of enemy machines to the Hurricaneforce. Featuring interviews with pilots who flew to war in both Spitfiresand Hurricanes, and following a detailed analysis of combat reports andcasualty records, Dilip Sarkar shatters the myth and argues a caseproving that the Hurricane was inferior to the Spitfire during the Battleof Britain.

In 1940, the defense of GreatBritain rested with a handful ofvolunteer aircrew, Churchills few.Overshadowed in later folklore bythe more famous Spitfire and Hurricane pilots, there were other pilots, observers and air gunners flying the Bristol Blenheim MKIV-F. The futureof the country and arguably that of the free world depended also ontheir skill, morale and sacrifice. Remarkably little has been chronicled ofthese men and their aircraft the Trade Protection squadrons formedby Hugh Dowding allotted to 11 Group in October 1939. Drawing oncontemporary diaries, periodicals, letters, logbooks, memoirs andinterviews with survivors, lauded historian Andy Bird reassesses the vitalrole they played and repositions it in history. In doing so, he justifiablyembraces the heroes we have left behind.

This volume picks up the story as the 8th Army, following its hard-foughtsuccess in Operation Crusader, was forced back to the Gazala area, roughly mid-way between theCyrenaican/Tripolitanian border of Libya and the frontier with Egypt. It covers the lull prior to thedisastrous defeat of the 8th Army in June 1942 and the loss of the important port and fortress ofTobruk. In this volume follow to the fortunes of some of the great fighter aces of the Desertcampaign such as Jochen Marseille and Otto Schulz of the Luftwaffe, Franco Bordoni-Bisleri of theRegia Aeronautica and Neville Duke, Billy Drake and Eddie Edwards of the Commonwealth airforces. While the fighting above the constantly-moving front lines form the main narrative of thisbook, the Allied and Axis night bombing offensives and the activities of the squadrons co-operating with the naval forces in the Mediterranean are certainly not neglected.

Denis Barnham, a young and inexperienced flight lieutenant, spent ten hectic weeks on this indomitable island; he left a well-orderedEnglish aerodrome for the chaos and disillusionment of Luqa. Here is the story of one ofthese unknown flyers a story based on letters written on the day, hoton the event, which tells of a young pilots progress from fledgling toseasoned fighter. Arab MiGs Volume 4Transition and War of Attrition, 19671973Tom CooperDavid Nicolle

Volume 4 in Harpia Publishings highly successful Arab MiGs series expands the history of themajor Arab air forces that became involved in the wars with Israel during the period 1967 to 1973.It solves the intractable complexity of this violent period by dispassionately outlining the sequenceof political and military events in chronological and geographic order. The reader issystematically taken through Egyptian attempts to reconstruct its battered air force and expand itsair defense capabilities, and then reestablish control of its airspace in spite of increasing and evermore aggressive Israeli attacks.

The military support Israel received from the United States not only resulted in both sidesdeveloping, testing and employing ever more advanced methods of air warfare, but eventuallyprovoked a Soviet military intervention, which marked the culmination of the period better knownas the War of Attrition.

The narrative continues with dramatic descriptions of the developments in Jordan, whichculminated in a civil war in 1970, and with an exclusive insight into the previously unknownexpansion of the Syrian air arm with extensive support from Czechoslovakia, in the late 1960s andearly 1970s. The content is concluded with lesser known military events in Algeria, Morocco, Iraqand Libya, where a series of military coups resulted in developments that were to become criticalnot only for the future of the local air forces, but also well beyond the borders of those countries.

The Wiking division was the onlyarmored SS division to fight exclusivelyon the Eastern Front. It is true that it waspartly composed of Flemish, Dutch andScandinavian volunteers whose primary motivationfor most ofthem, was to fight against Bolshevism. It would have been a politicalmistake to go up against the Western Allies. The division fought with anunrelenting energy despite the fact that victory was not always equal toits efforts and sacrifices, as in Cherkasy or Hungary. Among the ranks ofits officers were included high calipered men such as Felix Steiner,Herbert Otto Gille, August Dieckmann, Hans Dorr and Walter Schmidt toname a few. The history of this division, extremely detailed andillustrated by more than 2,500 exceptional photos largely from personalcollections is here traced through a series of three volumes. The firstcovers the period from December 1940 to April 1942, the second fromMay 1942 until April 1943 and the third, recounts the last two years ofwar.
