Case ThyssenKrupp Elevators
Digitizing The Service Business
Dr. Damon J. Knight, Head of Microsoft Practice, CGI
CGI and Microsoft Partners on Internet of Things
• CGI has partnered with Microsoft to bring the
Azure Services for IoT to market. We were the
first Global SI in the world to have
implemented a real enterprise client solution
using the service for transport and
manufacturing companies on the Azure stack.
• CGI has embedded Azure Components
including the Service Bus into CGI IoT Platform
which provides for the rapid development and
deployment of services to enable enterprise
customers to benefit from the new business
insights and services that Internet of Things
can deliver to organisations
What I did last Summer…
• Accepted Project from Satya Nadella
• Created the worlds first Business Driven Solution on the Azure
Services for IoT (ISS)
• Successfully deployed a Proof of Concept
• Won ISS Partner of the Year Award at WPC
• TKE are now in Phase 1 deployment 1/12/14
What he said...
“We wanted to go beyond the industry standard of preventative
maintenance to offer predictive and even pre-emptive maintenance,
thereby guaranteeing a higher uptime percentage on our elevators.”
Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO
ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG
TKE -What, Why, Who, How, Where, When?
• 1.2 Million Elevators worldwide
• Proactive, Predictive and Pre-emptive
• Remote Monitoring, Quicker Resolution times
• Engineer has more options, accessibility
• CGI built a cloud monitoring system
• Used Azure Intelligent System Service, ML, HD Insight
• Built upon a Industrial Framework called IEF

What YOU need to do next Summer!
• Start with what you already have, your current assets maybe hidden?
• IoT is not really about control/real time. It’s termed ‘near enough’
• Open standards are needed to progress the future of IoT
• New embedded Windows 10 releases will have local gateway functionality ‘baked in’
• ‘Smart Edge’ is very important, sending dirt to the cloud is pointless
• Data is not free, did I say that DATA IS NOT FREE?
• Event Handling carefully is key to a successful implementation
• Use the building blocks from MS
• Hybrid cloud strategies are good, offer insights
Key Takeaways…
• START Small and then build up slowly, but DO START
• Don’t get sucked in by ‘shiny object syndrome’
• Businesses don’t buy IoT, they buy increased profit margin and in some cases cost reduction, sometimes both
• Legacy is where the money is to be made (Brownfield)
• Home automation and fitness are good for press, not for revenue
• The value is in the insights – selling an outcome!
• Did I say…. You need a business case, use IoT as enabler
• Get a good partner with deep M2M and IoT experience
