May 2017
Project brief
Plane and inlay inbound and out bound slip roads of the M11, Junction 8. A
total of 4.5km of resurfacing with construction depths varying from 40mm to
200mm in up to 3 layers. Minimising disruption to road users was a key driver
for this project given its prominent location for access to and from Stansted
Airport.
Delivery
• Works were completed over 3 weekends, starting at 21:00 on Friday nights
and working continuously until 06:00 on Monday morning
• 12500t in 11 surfacing shifts and only 6 planing shifts
• Use of 8m wide paver eliminated 4kms of joints between lanes 1 and 2,
Whole life cost benefits through reduced joint failures
• Use of asphalt feeder – provided improved rideability through continuous
paving
• Using walking floor lorries, the number of lorry deliveries to site were
reduced by 40 less loads.
Achievements
• An average of 1000t per shift, per gang
• 73% reduction of programme compared to conventional industry outputs
• Zero accidents
• Right first time
• Continuous learning meant improvements after each weekend allowing for the original four weekend programme to be further reduced to three
“Through collaboration we were
able to achieve a 73%
programme reduction when
compared to conventional plane
and inlay outputs ”
