  • A major oil company operating a vast pipeline network in the most remote parts of the Niger Delta faced significant challenges in acquiring pressure profiles required for pipeline surveillance and pipeline manifold pressures used for hydrocarbon accounting. The company needed to replace the manual data collection process in order to fulfil a mandate for continuous monitoring of their pipelines for early detection of pressure drops that may be as a result of sabotage or leaks. The key considerations were terrain, power performance and long range transmission.The oil company (customer) is involved in all segments (E&P, upstream and midstream), therefore, the request for system was also to be scalable (for future expansion) and to be able to deliver different information over different communication protocols. All operation data need to be remotely monitored in their office domain to facilitate and enhance remote decision support capabilities. One of the project deliverables has to be improvement of current monitoring possibilities but also capability of remote intervention. Therefore, the system should enable two - way communication. Another strong requirement was data integrity i.e. system and communication security. In order to fulfil all system requirements and to ensure reliability and longevity, RPMA machine network with KONAR end devices was delivered. The Ingenus RPMA machine network is purposefully built to support M2M/IoT applications and is comprised of Access points that

    broadcast RPMA wireless signal, End devices that receive the signal from the access points and the RPMA signal itself. RPMA operates in free spectrum 2,4 GHz, ensures efficient spectrum/frequency usage, and ensures security (mutual authentication, message integrity and replay protection, message confidentiality, device anonymity, authentic firmware upgrades and secure multicasts). The built in machine data optimized protocol also ensures the lowest possible battery consumption and at the same time RPMA enables wide area coverage with almost unlimited capacity.KONAR end devices with built - in RPMA modules are installed in the flow-stations, manifolds, at wellheads and other customers facilities and provide connection from field to office domain ensuring reliable information flow. On top of RPMA system KONAR delivered the multiple connection and data export system with its MGMS (Modbus Gateway & Management Studio) enabling MODBUS TCP/IP and OPC connectivity for the customer.Upland Consulting Nigeria provided all necessary support and conducted all field/installation works.

    The Digital Oilfield (DOF) technology is a combination of IT and automation & instrumentation technologies, being an improvement of the existing technologies in the oil & gas industry. This integrated operations technology makes the analysis faster and easier with software involved in efficient data management, provides more realistic image of field processes and the availability of resources, helps to optimize the process and renders much safer operations with the inclusion of remote surveillance and collaborated environments.
