Transcript of Case study
The music video of the song “breaking the habit” by Linkin park is made from a
Japanese company called Studio Gonzo. The video is not what a typical music video
would look like for a mainstream company to produce. This is because the scenes in
the video are slightly creepy and disturbed. Normally a mainstream company such as
Warner brothers, which Linkin Park are signed to, would genially keep their videos
clean of obscene visual content. The video is completely animated making it a more
unique and eye-catching video and something to get the audience talking about. The
graphics for this animation have a comic like sketch to them which makes it seem like
its telling a story. At the start of the video is shows a lot of cogs moving that could
represent time, and the story moving . At 1:13 of the video, exactly after finishing the
first chorus the story starts to revers in time and show how the man, Lead singer of the
song, got on the car as well as a lot of other mini story thought it.

Art in a music video is what the artist uses in the music video to
stand out and makes it there own. Linkin park and Warner Bro’s
records have decided to make the music video a sketchy
drawn animation to give it more of a dark and troublesome
look towards the video. This is clearly shown when having
close up to faces and links in with the song of “breaking the
habit” meaning they are trying to get free of something evil or
troubling. The cogs could represent time in video and give it a
strange atmosphere. As the cogs move, it show time moving as
well. The content in the art of the video is darker and more
sinister than expected by any mainstream industry to
distribute on their company as the video shows twisted signs
such as a letter being wrote saying “I am nothing” then having
blood wiped across it. The video also shows signs of suicide as
the man on the car has jumped from a building to kill himself.

Linkin park uses their website to promote
themselves by using the banner on the top to

daily events by using social networks such as
twitter and Tumbler.
Linkin Park is signed to there own Label
called “Machine shop recordings,” founded in
2002, but also signed with Warner Bro’s
Records. This means that Linkin Park is a
subsidiary band whom has partnered with a
mainstream branch. This would give Linkin
park more freedom than a normal subsidiary
artist would get as they are in charge of
themselves with some management from
Warner bro’s records. Although of this
partnership, Linkin Park decided to be on
Hiatus due to disagreements with Warner
bro’s record on January 2009 but announced
on 23rdmay 2010 they are planning a new
release.
Visual
Synergy is when two different types of media industry's collaborate together to
produces a product the promotes and gives both company more recognition. Linkin
park has two examples of this. The first one is from their song “Iridescent” where
they have collaborated the film industry with DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount
Pictures to make a music video with the film Transformers – Dark of the moon. This
song has also now know as the Transformers films theme song. This greatly made
Linkin park more know and recognisable. In this music video they Include snaps of
the actual film Transformers. The other synergy they have done was with the new
medal of honour game coming out and used their hit on there next album to
promote their album more. Castle of glass has been set out to promote the two
industry's, Linkin park with there album and to promote the new game. They do this
by first using Linkin parks song and having them in the video but also showing
scenes, not from the game, by to do with the game, as war content is shown
throughout the video. It also kept the video to a story of one boy who lost his father
in war and followed him though the steps as well when he joins the army and it
shows his experiences.

Promotional
Linkin Park mainly uses YouTube as a way for
they to gain extended playability, although in
a collaboration with Warner Bro’s records they
are a subsidiary band. This makes them not
have too much money to use to get their
videos more publicity after the event of
releasing it. On YouTube as you can see on the
right the video has been viewed at a steady
rate as the video as gone on. The video as
became number one in U.S rock tracks and
the polish singles.
On YouTube as you can see on that the
video has been viewed at a steady rate
since the video was published. This
makes a very easy and reliable source for
the fans and viewers to find the song of
the artist and how it has over 13 million
views on YouTube shows how the video
has made a lot of publicity though this
type of music video outlet. YouTube has
also shown where the video is most
viewed and the age and gender of the
most viewers. It gives the artist a genial
idea on who they appeal to at that stage.
Giving them an idea how they can
improve and keep the audience happy in
there upcoming songs and music videos.x

As shown on the right “Breaking the habit” was
mostly popular in the U.S when the song came
you in 2004, it also seems popular in the Polish
Singles chart as well. This would of got the
band a lot of publicity around the states in 2004
as it was top of the chart in two rock charts that
the U.S have. This is also shown YouTube as
well as one of the top viewed places is the
united states, this would have been played on a
lot of music channels in the states due to its
popularity and would have been replayed a lot
on music channels and radio channels that
partner with the music channels.
The live version of the music video
“breaking the habit” was taken from the
road of revolution : live at Milton kings
DVD concert. This would give the
audience more interactivity with the artist
as they can interact with them at the
concert and have a special one time
experience of seeing it live. This would
gain a bit more money for the artist as the
fans would pay to see the video live and
gain all the institutions involved more
money from the fans paying the fees. The
album was also released on DVD in stores
such as HMV and sold over 13million
sales including online sales. This is a
good way back in 2004 as computer sales
were not as popular as they are now and
would still get a lot of sales though going
to stores and buying the album.
There are two ways of downloading music
videos. The first one with the “breaking
the habit” would be though ITunes. The
album has been rated 9 stars of average
and sold over 16 million copy's and the
Music video itself has been rated 11stars.
This shows that the music video has been
a huge success on standing out and
getting sales for both the album and the
music video itself on ITunes. The other
way is though downloading the music
video illegally by using sites as YouTube
converts and pirate bay. The statistics to
how any downloads of the song and music
video are untraceable illegally but are
probably quite high as it easier to get it
for free using this way any a lot of people
do it.
