10 HOMES & INTERIORS SCOTLAND
The camping chair, updated in two-tone fabric. Maison, page 73
My favourite
Paris, January, is host to the esteemed international trade fair Maison et Objet the hottest ticket, in, what was this time, the sub-zero capital. Distinguished French furniture house Ligne Roset (known for its collaborations with emerging and established designers) invited a select few from the UK media. The temperature dropped, then the snow fell, but driven from hotel to Villepinte, the crew of five journalists arrived unruffled and in good time to peruse the many wonders on show. With eight exhibition halls in total, only one, perhaps two, can be done feasibly in a day. There was so much to look at and we cant fit it all in, but catch some of the highlights on page 71.
From Paris to New York to Rome... this edition features homes across the pond, and beyond. Ideas are everywhere why stop at Scotland? The first is the Catskills retreat of a Glasgow-born entrepreneur where bold architecture makes the most of the wild scenery in upstate New York. Then its the United Arab Emirates where we step into one Dubai abode with an interior designed by an Edinburgh-based company, via a stylish Roman apartment with a highly unusual focal point a lift shaft. Closer to home, and at opposite ends of the design spectrum, east and west are covered: a wing of an Italianate mansion in Edinburgh and a two-bedroom tenement in Glasgow.
Finally, this edition welcomes its first free Kitchens & Bathrooms supplement a must-have read for whats hot and where to shop.

Unifying the apparently contradictory is an art we master to perfection. Our iconic design exudes an irresistible charis-ma even in its uncompromising minimalism. Like the new ovens 200 series, a stunning composition in Gaggenau Anthracite, Metallic or Silver that elegantly blends into every interior design. Far from being opposites, statement and understatement are united in perfect harmony.
For more information and a list of partners, please dial 0844 8929026 or visit: www.gaggenau.co.uk. Alternatively, please visit our showroom at: 40 Wigmore Street, London, W1U 2RX.
The difference is Gaggenau.

IN THE FRAME
HOW HAS YOUR STYLE EVOLVED
OVER THE YEARS?I dont think I have a style as such. I would define this better as something like an aesthetic approach or things that one prefers. Of course, as with everybody, this approach evolves throughout the years. In the past I was more (much more) formal, probably as a result of the education I got growing up in my family, whereas these days I am freer to enjoy and be surrounded by things I like, without thinking about it too much.
WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST
INFLUENCES?My biggest influences are all my design maestros: Ettore Sottsass, Richard
Sapper, Achille Castiglioni, Alessandro Mendini (who designed the corkscrew, right), Aldo Rossi, Robert Venturi Thanks to their thinking, I have learnt a lot of what I know today.
WHO IS YOUR DESIGN HERO?Nobody. I dont think there are any heroes in design.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE
BUILDING?Casa Malaparte in Capri, because of its unsurpassed privacy and its intriguing mix of authors: the architect Adalberto Libera and the writer/owner Curzio Malaparte. On top of that, I love the weather in Capri and the sea that surrounds the island.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM HOMEMy dream home is my actual home on Lake Orta in northern Italy. Its an old farm and 18th-century villa surrounded by my vineyard.
WHAT MAKES A HOME?Tranquillity, warmth and security.
WHAT SORT OF INTERIOR STYLE
DOES YOUR HOME HAVE?I would call it eclectic. Several of the main rooms, such as the library,
the kitchen and the bathrooms, were designed by Alessandro Mendini, Stefano Giovannoni and Wiel Arets. And I have
a collection of pieces of furniture that were designed by my
colleagues.
HOW DO YOU RELAX?By playing badminton and cooking when my wife Laura lets me.
WHICH ICONIC INTERIOR
PRODUCT DO YOU WISH
YOU HAD DESIGNED?Probably something like Dieter Rams 606 Universal
Shelving System from 1960.
WHAT IS SCOTLANDS GREATEST
ATTRIBUTE?Malt whisky, and the best roast beef Ive ever had!

THISLIFE
When Brian McGrory and James Houston were looking for a holiday place, their first thought was the Hamptons. (For Brian, originally from Langside in Glasgow but
now resident in New York, this is the nearest the eastern seaboard has to a cottage in Rothesay.) But the more they thought about it, the less the four-hour drive, the summer-only culture and the areas party lifestyle appealed. As a restaurateur in Manhattan, Brian wanted a break from traffic jams and wild nights on the cocktails. He also wanted a property that he and James could enjoy all year round.
James is an internationally-renowned photgrapher, works regularly in Paris shooting LOreals advertising

campaigns. Brian has two bar-restaurants in Manhattan and another in the Hamptons which means a whirlwind business life that cant help spilling into his social life as well. Both needed an escape route.
They had decided on the architect before they had a location, never mind a plot of land. One of our best friends has a beach house in Amagansett, in the Hamptons, Brian recalls. On our first night there, we were in awe of what she had created. We loved it so much that for the whole weekend we did not cross the front door. The taste level was exquisite, the architecture so chic, modern, clever and sophisticated.
That night Jonathan Marvel, the architect behind the property, came for dinner. If they ever got round to building their own place, Jonathan had the job.
When the couple finally did start location hunting they decided to turn their backs on the Hamptons and look upstate rather than towards the coast. The way Brian tells it, the first site they visited had them before theyd even left the city. The real estate listing described it as just like Scotland.
More good omens followed. The land was part of Timber-lake Estate, on the north-west side of the Hudson River, in Highlands County. The first bar-restaurant Brian had

opened in New York was called Highlands, and he and his business partners operate under the name of Highlands Restaurant Group. It was kind of serendipitous, he says. It was the first lot we looked at and we were equally taken with the location, the energy of the land and the picturesque lakefront view. It was extremely tranquil, and the estate agent was right it was oddly reminiscent of Scotland.
Other points in its favour? It is two hours door-to-door from our West Village apartment in New York City. Once there, you are in isolation, in the middle of nowhere. It really forces you to relax. We are part of a community of just 15 houses around the lake. The landscape is magical, with tall green pines all around the lake. There are deer everywhere; they congregate in the front garden at sunrise. We also have black bears and bald eagles. We are so close to Manhattan but there is so much nature and wildlife.
Crucially for Brian, it was also a location that they could enjoy all year round. I love every season, especially autumn
and winter. When all the leaves change to amber, red, yellow, burnt orange and brown, it is just spectacular. And there is nothing more magical than looking out onto the frozen lake in winter when it snows, and you have a glass of red wine in your hand and the fire on.
With the plot of land in the bag, the couple were straight round to Jonathan Marvels practice Rogers Marvel Archi-tects in Tribeca to get started on the drawings. Their brief was for a space with a very social, open, airy, light and tran quil centre. The bedrooms would be in different corners of the house, to give family and guests the option of spend ing some time alone. The building had to blend into the spec-tacu lar environment and bring the outside inside. It had to be south-facing to maximise the light. And, as a weekend home for townies with a dog, it had to be practical, paw-proof and easy to clean and maintain.
Jonathan gave them some good early advice, as Brian recalls: He said that if youre going to build your dream home, you

had better do it properly, because if you have to go back and change things it will cost you three times as much. So the budget which started at $1 million went up and we made sure we got everything we wanted.
They also enlisted other chums for assistance and inspira tion. Donna Karans house in the Hamptons is incredible: its organic, spiritual and earthy, with a Balinese flavour. And one of our dearest friends is Jamie Durie a celebrity gardener well known in the States as the man behind Oprah Winfreys herbaceous borders so he gave us a helping hand.
Brians life has not always been dinner with Oprah. He moved to the US in 2000, starting off in San Francisco. His first job was clearing plates at a soul-food diner in the Lower Haight. I kept saying to myself, what am I doing? he recalls. I had to be strong and follow through and not return home a failure.
After a year on the west coast he moved to New York, arriving in Manhattan six months after 9/11. He climbed the hospitality industrys greasy pole, eventually managing Public, a Michelin-starred Australasian restaurant. Finally ready to go it alone, Brian opened Highlands, a cool Scottish eaterie in the West Village,

in 2009. He and his business partners Mary Wan (a chum from Glasgow, where they both worked at Groucho St Judes) and Irishman Donal Brophy chipped in their savings, rolled up their sleeves and stripped the walls and hung the wallpaper themselves. Artists Douglas Gordon and Gerard Burns, old mates from the Groucho days, both invested some cash. They also brought the kind of cachet that money cant buy.
After Highlands came Mary Queen of Scots (now closed) and Whitehall, also in Manhattan. Whitehall which has a British, rather than purely Scottish theme is something of a favourite among the fashion community and beautiful people. Brians latest venture is a pop-up restaurant, Byron at the Surf Lodge. Its a summer-only eaterie in Montauk in the Hamptons, serving quinoa salad and steamed fluke (a kind of flounder native to the area) to the thin and rich.
With that kind of business empire comes the kind of holiday home that is set in five lakeland acres, with some surprises that you cant see from the house. Hence the outdoor lounge: everyones favourite place

to sit during the warmer months. At night we light a fire. Guests who come to visit for the first time have no idea that its there until they see the path.
Brian and James were involved in every stage of the design. There were heated discussions as they thrashed out the choice of tiles, wood for the flooring and for the cabinets. All of the cabinetry was custom-made by a local carpenter who had trained in Germany. He used American walnut for the kitchen, the main bedroom and the living area, spending many days working the grain and matching the grooves and pattern in each door and wood panel.
Choosing the furniture and finishes was the fun bit. Hardwood floors and granite worktops ticked both the aesthetic and wipe-down boxes. They agreed on the Agape Spoon bathtub, strategically positioned by one of the room-height windows. It makes having a bath a special experience, especially at night. When the moon is shining and the stars are out, you really get the feeling that you are taking a bath outside.
The built-in fireplace is the heart of the living room and the Fromental hand-painted silk paper in the bedroom combines luxury and nature in one lush wall covering. The Herms throws and pillows appeal to Brians visual sense and his patriotism they are manu fac tured by Barrie, the luxury knitwear com pany in Hawick.
Of course, there were disagreements. James initially loathed Brians Dala chair, designed by American hotshot Stephen Burks and unveiled in Milan just last year. It is so ugly yet beautiful, says Brian. And comfy. It takes away from a lot of the clean lines and symmetry in the living room. Jamess taste is more Asian, and he particularly likes Balinese style, but Brian was dubious about his desire to design a daybed, have it made in Bali, import it to America and put it in their lakeside kitchen.
I was so against it, he says. I thought it was a weird idea to have a bed in the kitchen-dining room, but I was wrong. Its perfection. I love chilling there with

the papers and a glass of vino. Now that the house is finished and the daybed-versus-Dala
arguments have melted away, Brian and James can enjoy spending time there. They aim to get up every second weekend, although with one of them spending a lot of time shooting in Paris and the other juggling two restaurants in Manhattan and one in the Hamptons, this does not always happen. But when theyre there, they make the most of it.
Every time we go up there we have to pinch our selves, says Brian. It makes such a difference to be able to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and recuperate from the high-octane life that we lead in New York City.
Sometimes its like a spa retreat because of the Agape bath, the steam room and the hot tub. Other times its the perfect entertaining house. There are so many areas for socialising: the kitchen, dining room, the outside dining deck. Then theres the lakeside lounge section which is perfect for sunset cocktails. We have family and friends up all the time, fire up the barbecue or get busy in the kitchen. Its ideal for dinner parties.
Its a busy life. We have a great team working for us so Ive got a lot of support day to day. Mary Wan is such a dynamo

when it comes to business. New York is all about the PR wheel, so we are constantly striving to
improve our product and to stay current in the
press and in peoples minds. A lot of regulars
come in to see me in the restaurants so I spend a
lot of time bouncing back and forwards between
them all.
And thats before he has been out to monitor
the competition: As a restaurateur, you always
have to be on top of all the new places that are
opening up. New York City is all about trends so
you must always be current with your interior
design, menus, wine list and cocktails.
To counteract the effects of all those martinis,
Brian is in the gym every morning for a 40-
minute run. When theyre upstate, hell march

Brian and James love it too, so much so that
theyre already planning their next property
adven ture. We were so lucky with the team.
Our contractor, Rory McKean, was a pleasure
to work with. I deal with a lot of contractors
in NYC with the bar-restaurants and there is
always a problem. Not with Rory.
When he hears whats coming up next, Rory
may live to regret overseeing such a straight-
forward build. We plan to sell this house in
a few years. We want to do something with a
large tree encased in a glass box that will be
the heart of the house. It will push the edges of
architectural-design perception.

Group ShowCollections can take a lifetime to amass, so display them to their best potential Words Gabriella Bennett
Are you a magpie for shiny things spotted at junk shops and car boots sales, or a stickler for gathering fi ne glassware and art? Do you hoard until your house (and spouse) reaches breaking point, or do you cull your displays when changing
seasons and tastes demand it? Whatever the quality or quantity of a collection, investing some time and planning into arranging it goes a long way. You can add colour to walls without the hassle of papering or painting just by mounting plates, prints and quirky kitchenalia (try rolling pins or vintage wooden hangers), freeing up valuable storage space at the same time. Coloured glass bottles, such as those pictured below, grouped in front of a window can even act as mood lighting, changing the rooms atmosphere as the day passes.

BEST IN SHOWApproach a display as if your home were an art gallery, advises Margot Paton of interior design house Chelsea Mclaine. You should feel comfortable around your things, so the most difficult part is to turn them into a well-curated collection, she advises. Colour-blocking creates visual interest by drawing the eye towards a group of similar colours.
Pick a colour scheme and organise your collection accordingly. Colourful collections look best against a neutral backdrop, while a bold colour can bring out the best in a soft coloured collection. Work too, with your rooms original features the home on the right uses art in simple frames fitted into an arched wall to give a calm, orderly feel.

HANG FIREA selection of straw hats on hooks down the hall or in the conservatory can look quirky and be useful, suggests interior designer Mary Leslie. Hang beads, scarves, belts or ties on old lace bobbins or wool sorters so theyre to hand and on display. Create visual interest by mixing up your displays in between the pots and pans suspended from meat hooks in the kitchen, why not add small artefacts or bits and pieces that youve found on holiday. Itll make a talking point if nothing else.
Before hanging larger collections, its worth laying out all the pieces on the floor and working out how theyll com plement or contrast against each other easier than making changes afterwards.

PERFECT FOR...UNIQUE HOMEWARE ITEMS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE
We wanted to open a lifestyle shop that just doesnt exist anywhere else, explains Fee Storey who,
with her husband Adam, owns Life Story, in Edinburgh.
With fashion, stationery and homeware products on
offer in a pared-back layout, its certainly a unique space.
The pattern, shape and form of each item is carefully
considered to create visually pleasing displays, with
plenty of room for shoppers to explore. Asymmetric,
comfortable clothes from fashion label Futori, designed
in a collaboration between Fee and a Japanese team,
hang on rails, while the simplicity of Danish design is
celebrated in Bloomingvilles Clara range of porcelain
teapots and teacups. Taxidermy pieces from a local
designer sit alongside colourful iPod charger cables and
cool Japanese notebooks.
The shops minimalist tendencies are down to Fees
background in textile design and Adams in interior
retail design, while the exclusive, global pieces on offer
encompass the couples ethos. We dreamt of a lovely
platform to showcase the beautiful work we see all
around Europe and, after five months of hard work, our
dream came true! says Fee.

DESIGN FOCUS
NIKKI McWILLIAMSSince graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 2008, Nikki has successfully set up her own business designing cushions, prints and gifts
I make hand-screenprinted cushions in my studio in Dundee. My current collection is based on my love of a good cup of tea and a biscuit: it features giant huggable versions of my favourite teatime treats. Theyre the only biscuits you can use to decorate your sofa without the risk of crumbs! Over the next five years Ill be expanding my product range and doing some experimental screenprinting I always seem to make my best work when I let loose and have fun. My designs are bright, witty and light-hearted but made to last. Its really important that things are well made, and Im so proud that our products are made here in Scotland. My biggest influence is food. Im fascinated by the rituals surrounding mealtimes and by how beautiful food can look.If there was a fire in my studio, Id save my sketchbooks. I like to carry a sketchbook around with me to take note of ideas I have for new designs and doodles that I can develop later on. Without these Id most likely forget Id ever thought of them so my sketchbooks are really valuable to me.
I wish I had invented Twitter. I think its brilliant! I love the building that my studio is in. Its a converted jute mill and doesnt look much from the outside (its just a big cube with windows), but the space inside is amazing. My studio is bright, with a high ceiling and big windows that face south and west, which means I get a nice spectrum of light throughout the day. The pigeons that live on the roof flock past the window all day long, which is nice to watch.

AILSA McCREADIEFrom her base in Dundee, Ailsa designs her strongly graphic prints
My research focuses on traditional and ornamental architecture and its seemingly incompatible pairing with modernism. My designs are inspired by contemporary and Art Deco architecture as Ive always been drawn to the shape and pattern found in everyday life, particularly in geometric forms. My aim is to demonstrate that pattern can be simple, contemporary and beautiful. Im going to immerse myself in the design industry over the next five years. I want to gain as much experience as possible through internships or designer roles through companies, exhibitions and commissions. I have just finished a placement with Tigerprint, designers of cutting-edge gift wrap, cards and stationery for Marks & Spencer. I found it really valuable to work in such a commercial company and to learn production techniques such as foiling and embossing. I have also been selected by Collect Scotland to show my work at Indigo within the prestigious Premier Vision trade show in Paris in September its an amazing opportunity. My designs are hand-drawn and screenprinted on to fabric and paper. Pattern is key I limit my palette to keep the focus on it. I have been hugely influenced by Scandinavian designers such as Marimekko and Ferm Living. Their prints and patterns are simple yet striking, and I love their graphic approach to design. My sketchbooks contain all my research, inspiration and patterns, as well as my dye recipes and experiments, so if my studio went on fire theyre the first things Id save.I wish Id designed Johanna Basfords limited-edition Swarovski Peacock print. All her designs and illustrations are beautiful but the Peacock print is my favourite.

DESIGN FOCUS
HAZEL CARRUTHERSThis nature lover creates delicate and intricate designs for printed fabric and wallpapers
I would describe my work as fun and whimsical and made for people who like pretty and interesting things. I love creating my own designs from scratch and being able to add something to an object. Id like to think that my designs bring new life to ordinary objects in the home just by adding an interesting print or motif to a surface.Over the next five years I will be working hard and having a good time creating fresh ideas in my work. I also have a huge wanderlust and will hopefully be able to do some travelling, visiting all the places around the world that have given me so much inspiration. My designs are playful and imaginative and the hand-drawn elements make them very individual. Covering a wing chair is next on my list for upcycling.
My biggest influence is everyday life, daydreams and the beauty of the natural world and the lovely things found within it. I have always been an outdoors person I think there is nothing nicer than sitting out in the summer in a beautiful garden. If there was a fire in my studio, I would save my laptopit holds a lot for something so easy to carry! I wish I had designed Tord Boontjes wonderful wall hangings. They appear so magical, yet there is something about them that looks very natural at the same time.My favourite building is Neuschwanstein Castle, in Bavaria a real fairytale castle (it inspired Disneys Sleeping Beauty) and one of the many places on my travel wish list.

Hazel Carruthers (above) describes herself as an outdoors
person, and the natural world is where she gathers most of
the inspiration for her designs. These are hand-drawn and
then printed on to fine silks and cottons

Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the creative director of Herms, describes his as a flying carpet, because it carries so many memories. When you buy one of Fort Street Studios hand-knotted wild silk rugs, you take it with you when you relocate, even when, like Dumas, your career whisks you between the fashion capitals of the world. Created by Janis Provisor and Brad Davis, artists who have
been married to each other for 26 years, these are not so much carpets as works of art for the floor. Had Mark Rothko swapped New York for Hangzhou, the centre of the Chinese silk industry, and spent several painful years negotiating with carpet manufacturers and computer programmers, he
too might have created vivid blocks of colour out of wild Dandong silk. These rugs feel as good as they look. Tougher than the
cultivated version, wild silk feels like cashmere underfoot and has a matt lustre that is reminiscent of suede. The density of the thread (there are more than 1.5 million in a 9ft by 12ft rug) means the colour graduations are as soft as a watercolour.Just go carefully with the red wine.
