Professional Wrestling Debut; Future Uncertain due to Amateur Status Ruling

The National Wrestling League is a new Idea whose time has come . This Idea Is the brainchild of Wayne Gerensteln. a 23-year veteran of wrestling and former high school wrestling coach .

Gerensteln spent six years creating the NWL. While still employed as a teacher and wrestling coach. he slaved nights. weekends. and summers developing research . background. data. and contacts necessary to make the NWL a reality.

The early signals from publicity efforts Indicate that the league may be a success. The League's publicity firm states that It has never experienced such an enamored reactlon from the natlon's press. 'We've got something here: states President Bob Cycon. of Cycon Communications. Welch, continued bora. Clarion. Bloomsburg. and Lock Haven. He plans on majoring in Business. His goals this year are defined - to go undefeated. win the states. win the summertime freestyle nationals. and get a full scholarship to a top wrestling school.

Most sports fans rank Welch number one In the state at 167 pounds. He placed fifth In the states last year. and over the summer. won the Empire state Games (for the second time) . 'That was the turning point,'

To succeed in the game of life is what this book is all about.

" "'s the best book of its kind ever published ", says Joe Paterno, Head Football Coach , Penn State University , 1983 National Champions.

Hundreds of great Americans share their secret for success throughout the 336 pages.

March 1<;88. Syracuse -Jon Welch. CanandaiQu::l !eOor(fCY lett). pbced filth at lastyea(s state meet. This year he is undefeated so far and is rank&d number one in the stote at 167 pounds. The guy in forst place is Ethan Bosch. of Section Six. He has good reason to smile. as he ~inned his way to the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award.

says Jon. ' Last season. I had some close matches: I didn't have a lot of confidence. At the games. no one came close to me. Wilen I step on a mat now. I feel like no one can do anything to me.'

' I like being ranked number one,' says Jon. 'It seems I've always been second or third,' referring to his Junior high days. 'I jon't really feel any extra pressure. Befo.re a match. I'm a little nervous. mostly because I'm so anxious to wrestle.'

Tobin Tansey Is Canandaigua's wrestling coach. a large. loud man. He was a bit miffed after a recent match with Spencerport . The way he figures it. some coaches are not putting their best guys against Welch. Says Tansey: ' My philosophy Is to wrestle the toughest competition you can find. It doesn't help Jon or their guy to avoid Jon. I just wish they'd wrestle their best against him.' Tansey now wrestles Welch at 167. 177. or heavyweight. wherever the competition Is toughest.

Welch Is currently 101-17-2. His mark for the season Is 21-0. By Tansey's projections. Jon should have 39 season wins after he takes the state title . A prediction? Not really. but don't bet against it .

Welch Is a balanced wrestler. He likes ankle picks. singles. doubles. high crotches. and throws. 'Jon has no real weaknesses,' says Tansey. 'He's strong. and has excellent technique. He's done a lot of freestyle and Greco Roman. He attacks both both sides, and can score from any position.' Indeed. watching Welch In action suggests he doesn't know how to take a backwards step . He applies constant pressure and enough violence to dominate.

His closest match this year was 9-3 against Section 4's top-ranked wrestler . That came In the finals of the SherburneEarlville tournament In December. The tournament Included some of the toughest teams In the state - Johnson City. Suffern, Baldwinsville. Huntington. Bay Shore. East Syracuse-Minoa. etc .

Welch's Interest in wrestling Is no surprize given his environment (Doesn't everyone In Canandaigua wrestle?). Jon started In third grade with his friend. Todd LeGrette. Todd wrestles 126 for CA. and is approach-

Ing 20 wins himself. Even Welch's family seems wrestling-crazy. In fact. call their house. and their answering machine will Inform you on Jon's wrestling schedule that week!

Welch likes football. and says he might have made a career of it If he were bigger.

He played offensively and defensively. ,,1ade the All Greater Rochester Team. and All state Fourth Team . But he likes the Individuality of wrestling . 'You determine your own outcome,' he says.

When asked about his philosophy on the sport. he simply replies 'Win.' The most recent dual win was against Newark's Corey Comer. a strong wrestler with over 25 wins last year, Jon stepped on him. 18-8. ' He'll do well next year,' states Welch. as if to say 'This year belongs to me.' Days later. he pinned Queensbury's Tom Morton to claim first place In the rugged Canandaigua Bradshaw Tournament.

Welch's weight class at last year's states was extremely tough . After a first-round win. he lost an 8-5 decision to Rory Thorpe. Section 3's top-ranked wrestler. In the closIng moments of that match. Welch had Thorpe bridging , Afterwards. Jon battled back to place fifth .

In the 167-pound finals. Thorpe was decked In less than a minute by Ethan Bosch of Section 6, who took the Most Outstanding Wrestler award. Bosch and Welch are no strangers. They've tangled several times in the past. Bosch always came out on top. but not by rQuch. The last was by one point. two years ago. Bosch Is now wrestling for Syracuse University.

After the states and as if to say. 'Ah'li be bach,' Jon re-dedicated himself to the sport - wrestling. weight-lifting. and going to camps In the off-season and playing football In the fall . And now here he Is. In the midst of his senior season. undefeated and ranked first in New York. The highlight of his career 'hasn't happened yet'. although he's been very successful. Welch even has an Athletic Resume that takes up nearly two full pages. He's working on page three now.

Page 3: CA's Jon Welch: Bloomfield's Bill Opett: The National ... · possibly Speencerport's Jon Raines and Ca nandaigua's Cory Sinton. Sinton Is the '1' In Opett's 15-1 record. That happened

Opett, continued gram has enabled him to Increase his strength as his weight Increased.

Opett's father likes to call his son a ' fish ' whenever he loses a match. For the past four years. dad has been pretty silent. though. Bill's record Is currently 15-1 for the season and 102-17-1 overall. As a freshman. he was 25-8. The next year he won the Class C Sectionals on the way to a 28-6 season. And last year. he won five tournaments and took sixth place In the states. He was 35-5-1 for the year. Three of those losses were at the states; the other two were avenged late In the season.

The Mat Slap. a state-wide publication ranks Opett first In the state at 98 pounds. He'll never see that weight again. but should be highly ranked at 105. Whoever goes to the states for Section Five at 105 should be top-ranked at the states. as this weight looks to be loaded wlth talent thle year .

In addition to Opett. there's Rich O'Lena. iast year's Section Five champ at 98; Barry Barklund. runner-up at 98; Gates Chili's dynamo. Jim Barbato; Byron Bergen's skilled Tim Herman; Mldlakes' Brian Ranger. and possibly Speencerport's Jon Raines and Canandaigua's Cory Sinton.

Sinton Is the '1' In Opett's 15-1 record . That happened In the finals of the Canandaigua Bradshaw Tournament. 2-0. Sinton. a large 112 pounder. scored a reversal with 30 seconds left In the match. He then slapped on a cradle and used It to walt out the clock. Some people watching the match felt Sinton should have been hit with stalling. even before that. Cory has lost only tlhree close matches so far this year. In-

cluding 3- 1 to O'Lena at the Webster Classic .

Dad's ' fish' analogy Is somewlhat accurate If you'd classify an octopus as a fish . That's what Bill resembles when on top. He uses all his appendages - arms and legs -to first wear opponents out and then flop them over. He has a lot of 3rd period pins.

He Is a control wrestler. In tight matches. he keeps a cool head and eeks out a point here and there. always stingy on giving up points. Opett's cerebral style. long limbs. and superior conditioning make him an excellent 118 pound college prospect.

So far. Bill is considering Syracuse University. University of Buffalo. and a few others. He wants to be an environmentalist. For now. though. he is intent on running his way back to Syracuse.

BIoomfield's Bill Opett. top. In Sectional action last season. Opett placed sixth In last yeafs state tournament. He credits coach Gene Wild for much of his success. Wnhout him. I would have never made ~ to the states.'

NWl, continued league attempting to compete with an established sports entity. This Is sports history In the making with the first legitimate teams of serious professional wrestiers.' The League has a financial structure that guarantees It won't fall early by tendering multi-million dollar contracts before the league Is firmly established. And It 's not competing with an established league.

The NWL will be aggressively promoted. 'We'll launch an all-out publicity blitz that will dlstlngulsh the NWL's serious team competition from the fake product that appears on N stations across the country . • says Gerensteln Competition starts this month. January. A 28-dual meet schedule will feature: lhe Chicago Blaze . Cleveland Cougars. Iowa stalkers. Minnesota Grizzlies. New York Bulldogs. LA Breakers. Philadelphia Fury. and Oklahoma Blsons

For further Information. contact the NWL. 203 N LaSalle st. Chicago. IL 60601 (312) 558-1363.

Note: Articles across the country have been discussing the premiere of this new professional wrestling league. Response has been positive. However. In the January 15. 1989 Issue of Wrestling USA Magazine, David Miller. Executive Director of USA Wrestling. states that. 'On November 5. 1988. the Board of Directors of USA Wrestling voted not to support the effort of the National Wrestling League.' The following Is an excerpt from that artlcle:

'The main reason that USA Wrestling can not support the NWL Is amateur eligibility of the athletes. .. . We do not wish to oppose the National Wrestling League and believe In theory that It may be a good Idea. However. at this time. It unquestionably affects 'amateur status' and therefore we are left wlth no choice but to protect our athletes.

Mr. Gerensteln's article mentioned nothIng about the eligibility consequences to athletes Involved In his league. We want to make It very clear to any athlete that competing for the NWL disqualifies you from any competition In USA Wrestling and FILA (the International governing body) events.

USA Wrestling Is now working on a national team concept. a program that funds the development of a full-time national coach In both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestilng. Direct financial support for the travel and training expenses of top-ranked wrestiers In each weight Is also Included

We also encourage all your readers to contact our office If there Is any way that we can help out wrestling In your area . Our address Is USA Wrestling. 225 S Academy Blvd. Colorado Springs. CO 80910 (179) 597-8333. Feel free to call anytime. and we will be glad to put you In touch with someone who can serve you.'

Note: So It seems that there Is a cloud over the formation of this new league. We will keep you Informed concerning developments In this area. USA Wrestling Poster

The new. controversial USA Wrestling Olympic promotion poster was recently unveiled at the USA/USSR dual meet in Phoenix. Arizona. The title of the poster is: "Taking the Heart out of the Competition". It depicts an American Eagle tearing the heart from the chest of a Soviet bear in a breath-taking painting by Tim Prutzer. Posing with their Olympic gold medals are American wrestling stars Kenny Monday and John Smith. Both defeated Soviet athletes in the finals of the Olympics in memorable matches .

The goal of USA Wrestling is to become the number one wrestling nation in the world in both styles. Currently. the Soviet Union is the world 's powerhouse in wrestling. USA Wrestling is dedicated to toppling the Soviet dynasty and the poster is designed to be a rallying point for the effort.

The poster costs $8 .00 and will be sold help focus the attention on the new concerted effort for American Wrestling Excellence .

To order, mail a check or money order for $ 1 0 ($8 plus $2 for shipping) to:

Coach Destefanis works hard to bring national recognition to Central Conn's wrestling program. He has brought In topnotch talent from the northeast. and has a four-year record of 54-20-1 (72.7"10 winning percentage). His team Is now a power In the New England region. ry. Boda staged a miraculous recovery soon

afterwards, and went on to win two more matches and the 119 pound title . Tansey was furious: 'Talk about unethical coachIng! If Boda was really hurt, why was he holding the ice pack on the wrong side of his face half the time?' In the finals, Boda declsioned Dave Miller of Brockport, an opponent Foster has also beaten.

The next match after the Bradshaw Tournament, Foster dropped a 6-5 decision to tough Tom Alol of Wayne Central. AccordIng to Coach Tansey, It was due to being over-cautious In light of the decision against Boda . 'He had his mind on what happened at the tournament. He's back to normal now; he's aggressive like he was before. I still expect him to dominate the rest of his competition: says Tansey.

Canandalgua's KelT'{ Foster. right, In Sectional action wnh Spencerport·s Chris Bannister. Bannister won by a 4-4, 1-1 aT criteria decision In the semWlnals at 112 pounds. Both wrestlers are currently ranked In the state by The Mat Slap, Bannister second ond Foster slxth (at 119 pounds).

At 112 pounds, Foster will face strong competition from a number of standouts. But he has a definite advantage In experience among them all. No one else has been to the states as many times as he had. And maybe no one else Is as motivated as he is.

CA's Kerry Foster Seeks Return to States

In sports, It Is not always the defending champ that Is toughest to beat. Sometimes It Is the past champ who Is best. This Is the person who has won, then lost, and Is now on track to win again. These kind of competitors are good enough to win because they've been there. They're also pissed, because they've lost. So they wrestle with a vengeance.

Kerry Foster, Canandaigua senior, has been to the states twice now. As a freshman 98 pounder, he was 30-7-1. At the states, he went 2-2 without placing . The following year, he moved up to 105 and also made It to Syracuse. Again, he failed to place. His record that year was 32-4.

Last season, Foster wrestled at 112 pounds. He won 33 matches, and lost only three. Unfortunately, one of those was In the semifinals of the state qualifiers against Spencerport's Chris Bannister. In a close match, Bannister came out on top, 1-0 In overtime. Bannister went on to win the qualifiers and wrestle In the states. He Is currently ranked second In the state at 119 pounds.

Kerry Is wrestling at 119 this year. He Is not ranked as high as some other Section 5 wrestlers. Most of the headlines are grabbed by top-ranked teammate Jon Welch. But anyone overlooking Foster this season Is blind. Overall, he Is 118-19-1. This season he Is 25-2. He won Webster Classic, the prestigious Sherburne-Earlville tournament (claiming the Most Outstanding Wrestler award), and took third In the tough Canandaigua Bradshaw tournament.

Tobin Tansey, Canandaigua'S coach, says Foster will drop down to 112 for postseason competition. So far, he has beaten many strong opponents, Including Shawn Knisely, Waterloo (6-2), and Jim Loffredo, Baldlnsville (7-2) .

Tansey feels this could be Kerry's best year so far. 'He's putting In a lot of effort, and he's wrestling better than ever. He's cool and experienced; his knowledge of the sport Is excellent. He uses a lot of freestyle and Greco technique. He Is very aggressive, and goes after people a lot.' Ker-

ry is best on his feet, and he Is always looking for back pOints after the TD.

At the recent Canandaigua Bradshaw Tournament, Kerry lost a bizarre match by disqualification In the quarterfinals. LeadIng by a comfortable four points with Just seconds remaining against TIm Boda of Ithaca, Kerry hit Boda with an elbow to the forehead. He was penalized one point. and Boda's coach decided to default the match. The result was that Boda won by default; he could not continue due to InJu-

Oswego State Update by Scott Justice

Jim O'Neill , former Bishop Kearney, Irondequoit, and Monroe Community College grappler, Is one of the leaders on the Oswego State wrestling team this winter. Competing at 142 pounds, O'Neill Is a second year letterman who was 15-10 last year with a third place finish at the SUNY Championships. ' He really should have been at the nationals last year: Oswego assistant coach Mike Howard commented. 'He lost a berth on a straw vote.'

O'Neill did earn All New York honors last year and twice beat All American Brian Reed of St. Lawrence and Byron Bergen. Jim finished fourth In the competitive RfT Invitational last month and Is currently ranked fourth In the New York State College Poll . Said Howard, 'When Jim wrestles well, nobody can touch him. We're really happy with him.'

Another Section 5 wrestler In the line-up Is 158 pound freshman Steve Amyot of Victor. 'He's tough when he doesn't make freshman mistakes: Howard said. Amyot placed fifth this year at the RfT Invitational.

Head Coach Jim Howard Is In his 27th year at Oswego State. In his tenure, he has cranked out 28 All Americans and three Individual national champions. His squad was third In NCAA Division III In 1982. Currently, Oswego Is ranked 12th In Dlv III and ninth In New York.

Co-captain Brian Darling, a Junior at 126 pounds Is a two-time NCAA national qualifier and took second at the RIT Invitational.

Heavyweight co-captain Jon Buhner Is a

two-time All American. He placed fifth and fourth in the last two national tournaments. Jon has a 3.5 grade point average (out of a possible 4.0), and Is shooting for his lOath college win. He Is top-ranked In New York.

Oswego State has 7,500 full-time students. Its main focus Is Uberal Arts with degrees awarded In Computer Science, Business Education, and Technology Education. The school Is ranked In the top 15% of all colleges In the nation by Barron's Guide and was recently named In a magazine article on 'How to get the Best Education for your Money.'

Section Six's Will Moss Dominating

To the west lies the friendly little town of Albion. It's a Section Six school. but Albion High School competes with several Section Five schools. This Is unfortunate If you wrestle 155 for one of these schools. If you do, you might have to face Wilfred Moss, Jr. His father Is the town barber, and Will Jr. buzz-cuts even better than his father.

Moss Is a rugged, non-stop dynamo of wrestling action. He employs constant leg attacks and punishing riding and pinning techniques. Moss uses superior strength and superb conditioning to wear opponents down. He Is 16-0 this season (as a senior), and 68-4 for the past three seasons.

Last year, Willie was 29- 1. He won a host of tournaments, Including a couple against Section Five opponents. His lone loss was a one point decision to John Gregor of Clar-

NEW YORK STATE COLLEGIATE WRESTLING ''TOP 80 INDIVIDUALS"

ence In the semifinals of the Section SIx state qualifiers.

Moss works extremely hard maintaining his competitive edge. In addition to practice, he does a lot of weight lifting and running . In the off-season, he lifts and wrestles In tournaments and comps.

Will Is a well-rounded, likeable fellow (off the mat, that Is) . He Is the Albion Student Council President and Treasurer of the Wrestling Club. He collects baseball cards. And In his spare time, he Is a star running back for Albion, a small school with a big sports tradition. Last year, the football team was ranked number one In the state for small schools.

Moss's motto Is 'Wrestle every match as If It were your last.' Watch him and It will look like, 'Pulverize every opponent and make him wish It were his last.' He Is extremely active and dominating . 'When you wrestle Will, you're In for a war. If Marvin Hagler were to wrestle, he'd wrestle like Moss.

This year, Moss Is top-ranked In Section Six, ahead of Gregor, who handed Moss his only defeat last year. The ran kings are based on Moss's strong start so far.

While not arrogant, Will exudes confidence. 'I think I am the best In Section Six', he says. 'My goal Is to get to the states.' Beyond that, he's not sure. 'I like to take things one step at a time. I put all my efforts Into the next match; I never look beyond that.'

Willis a C+ to B student at Albion, and will major In Business Administration In college. While undecided on a school. he is looking at Brockport State, University of Buffalo, and Niagara Community College. Look for him to represent Section SIx In the states.
