General Tips for College Admission

Check academic requirements for admissionMinimum GPA?Required courses? (fine arts, etc.)

Make sure the STUDENT completes the application (not the parent)

Determine if additional materials are needed (teacher recommendation form, counselor form, etc.)

Page 25: Cary High School Senior Parent Information Night September 18, 2014.

When To Apply

• Check college admissions deadlines• Some colleges may give preference to early

applicants; check with your colleges of interest

• Many colleges will consider students for certain merit scholarships if they apply by the first or second deadline

• Receiving a decision before March is ideal for most students

Page 26: Cary High School Senior Parent Information Night September 18, 2014.

Admissions Terminology Early Decision: usually binding (you must attend the

college if you are admitted) Early Admission: allows you to receive a decision

more quickly Rolling Admission: the college accepts applications

throughout the year Deferral: the college needs more information (first

semester grades, test scores, etc.) before an admissions decision can be made

Wait List: the student will be admitted IF there is room remaining in the freshman class
