The Latin Quarter of Paris is situated on the left bank of the River Seine, around the Sorbonne. Known for its student life, lively atmosphere and bistros, the Latin Quarter is the home to a number of higher education establishments besides the university itself, such as the École Normale Supérieure, the École des Mines de Paris (a ParisTech institute), the Schola Cantorum, and the Jussieu university campus. Other establishments such as the École Polytechnique (also a ParisTech engineering school) have relocated in recent times to more spacious settings.The area gets its name from the Latin language, which was once widely spoken in and around the University since Latin was the international language of learning in the Middle Ages. Situated in the fifth (cinquième) arrondissement of Paris, Rue Mouffetard is one of Paris's oldest and liveliest neighborhoods. These days the area has many restaurants, shops, and cafés, and a regular open market. It is centered on the Place Contrescarpe, at the junction of the rue Mouffetard and the rue de Lacepede. Its southern terminus is at the Square Saint-Médard where there is a permanent open-air market.

Faimoasa universitate Sorbona a fost fondată în anul 1253 (colegiu pentru 16 studenţi săraci care studiau teologia)
Este numită după Robert Sorbon, confesorul lui Ludovic IX
Numele cartierului vine de la limba latină vorbită de studenţii de la Sorbona până la Revoluţie.
La sud cartierul Latin se învecinează cu mult mai liniştitul cartier Luxembourg
Palatul Luxembourg este sediul Senatului
Tot pe malul stâng al Senei se află biserica Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre (sec XII-XIII) care are un iconostas adăugat la 1900

Pe strada Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre fosta reşedinţă a guvernatorului de la Petit Châtelet datează din secolul XVII
Tot pe malul stâng al Senei se află şi Jardin des Plantes, fosta grădină regală de plante medicinale înfiinţată în 1626 pentru Ludovic XIII
Din 1640 Grădina Botanică a fost deschisă publicului
În cinstea lui Georges Cuvier, cercetător al Muzeului de Istorie Naturală, la intersecţia străzilor Linné şi Cuvier a fost ridicată o fântână
Biserica Saint-Médard datează din secolul IX. Construcţia actuală a fost refăcută în 1655
Rue Mouffetard este una dintre cele mai vechi pieţe stradale din inima Parisului medieval
Institutul Oceanografic a fost înfiinţat în anul 1910 de Prinţul Albert de Monaco, membru asociat al Academiei Franceze
