LONDONThe 2012 Olympic Games will take place

in London, England between July 27 and

August 12, 2012. London will be the frst city

to ofcially host the modern Olympic Games,

or the third time, having previously done

so in 1908 and 1948.

The London 2012 Olympic Games will

use a mix o new, temporary and existing

venues to showcase athletes and sports in

spectacular settings and will eature

26 sports and a total o 38 disciplines.The majority o the Games venues are

located in the metropolitan area o

London, within three compact geographic

zones; however some sports will take place

at venues throughout the U.K.

In London, the three geographic zones are:

OlympicZone

RiverZone

CentralZone

The Olympic Zone, in Londons east areao Stratord. Within the 2 km Olympic

Park are the venues or the ceremonies,

athletics, swimming, cycling, encing,

hockey, handball and basketball. The

venues will be easily accessible through a

network o ootbridges and walkways.

The River Zone, straddling the River

Thames, contains venues or boxing,

artistic gymnastics and equestrian. The

relatively new North Greenwich Arena,

where several sports are held, is theormer Millennium Dome.

The remaining venues in the Greater

London area will be a part o the Central

Zone. Wembley Stadium, Lords Cricket

Ground and Hyde Park, as well as most

o the Olympic Marathon Course, are all

part o several venues in this zone.
