Created for adults and students ages 18 and up, the camp provides musicians of all levels, educators and music lovers with an opportunity to grow, learn and connect. This year five Special Guest Artists will share their insights and knowledge through lectures and workshops. Everyone will have a chance to make music at jam sessions and other activities with Miguel Zenón, Nico Segal’s The JuJu Exchange, Jimmy Cobb, Nicole Mitchell and Terri Lyne Carrington. Additionally, the week includes workshops and demonstrations by renowned professional musicians and music educators including Mwata Bowden, Jose Diaz, Pharez Whitted, Robert Irving III, Dee Alexander, Joan Hickey, Geof Bradfield, Greg Ward, Victor Garcia, Bobbi Wilsyn and others! 35 CPDU’s are available for Chicago Public School teachers. Monday: MIGUEL ZENÓN Multiple Grammy Nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often- contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation, he has also developed a unique voice as a composer and as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Latin American Folkloric Music and jazz. Tuesday: NICO SEGAL’S THE JUJU EXCHANGE With one foot in Jazz and the other foot in everything else, The JuJu is a musical partnership of childhood friends who came up through Chicago Public School music programs. Nico Segal (formerly Donnie Trumpet), Julian & Everett Reid and Lane Beckstrom use The JuJu as a way to build off of their past experiences in order to make a genre-bending style of music that looks to the future while dealing with the problems of the present. Drawing from hip-hop, jazz, classical and pop music, The JuJu will take you where anything is possible. Wednesday: JIMMY COBB Legendary jazz drummer, Jimmy Cobb, was born in Washington, D.C. on January 20, 1929. A superb, mostly self-taught musician, Cobb is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis bands. His inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Co. spanned from 1957 to 1963 and included the masterpiece “Kind of Blue,” the most popular jazz recording in history. He also played on “Sketches of Spain,” “Someday My Prince Will Come,” “Live at Carnegie Hall,” “Live at the Blackhawk,” “Porgy and Bess,” and many, many other hallmark Miles Davis recordings. In June 2008, Cobb received the Don Redman Heritage award and four months later was named one of six National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Masters. He remains active, not only in New York City, where he leads Jimmy Cobb’s Mob but on the international circuit including Japan, China, Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, and South Africa. Thursday: NICOLE MITCHELL is an award-winning creative flutist, composer, bandleader, and educator. Having emerged from Chicago’s innovative music scene in the late 90s, Mitchell’s music celebrates contemporary African American culture. She is the founder of Black Earth Ensemble, Black Earth Strings, Sonic Projections and Ice Crystals, and composes for contemporary ensembles of varied instrumentation and size while incorporating improvisation and a wide aesthetic expression. The former first woman president of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, (AACM), Mitchell celebrates endless possibility by “creating visionary worlds through music that bridge the familiar with the unknown.” Mitchell works to raise respect and integrity for the improvised flute, to contribute her original voice to the jazz legacy, and to continue the bold and exciting directions the AACM charted for decades. In March 2018, Mitchell received the “Champion of New Music Award” from the American Composers Forum. With her ensembles, as a featured flutist and composer, Mitchell has been a highlight at festivals and art venues throughout Europe, the U.S. and Canada. Nicole Mitchell is a Professor of Music at the University of California Irvine. Friday: TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON Celebrating 40 years in music, three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning drummer, producer and educator, Terri Lyne Carrington started her professional career at ten years old, being the youngest person to receive a union card in Boston, MA. Carrington is the first female artist to win a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. In 2005, she returned to her hometown where she was appointed professor at her alma mater, Berklee College of Music. Currently, she holds the position of Zildjian Chair in Performance, Berklee Global Jazz Institute. She is also the Artistic Director for both the Beantown Jazz Festival and Berklee Summer Jazz Workshop, and Co-Artistic Director of The Carr Center, Detroit, MI. To date, Carrington has released eight albums, most recently “The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL,” which features a leading cast of superb female instrumentalists and vocalists including Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, Nancy Wilson, Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, Lizz Wright, Ingrid Jensen, Meshell Ndegoecello, Linda Oh, Patrice Rushen, Regina Carter and others. We’ll move more deeply into a discussion of diversity and bringing more voices to the tables of power, to imagine a truly equitable jazz ecosystem.

Erwin HelferA Chicago boogie woogie innovator and master, Helfer was influenced and mentored by the sounds and personalities of past boogie woogie and blues masters like Mama Yancey, Cripple Clarence Lofton, Speckled Red, Jimmy Walker and Sunnyland Slim. His innovative approach has moved “classic” blues piano music forward in a totally new direction.

2:15 – 3:45 AMu LATIN JAZZ STYLES José DiazMusic Educator Diaz explores the historical influence and interaction of traditional musical styles from Latin America with jazz. Learn the elements of various traditional styles and discover artists and developments that have defined and advanced the music to the present.
