Celebrating Success
This week we held our 2019 Kindergarten information session. Mrs Turner wowed
19 brand new students in the kindergarten room while their parents and carers
took part in an information session in the hall. It is always great to see how
quickly the students take to learning. Mrs Turner’s craft activity was a royal hit.
Transition Programs
Next week our senior students will be participating in Buddy Training to help
them prepare to be Buddy’s to our Kindergarten students next week. On
Wednesday, the Buddy’s will meet and greet their new Kindergarten friends at
their first Little Learners.
On Wednesday 7 November our Year 5 students will attend Newcastle High
School for some taster lessons. The following Wednesday, some of our Year 6
students will begin their official transition to high school with ongoing weekly
visits.
New faces
You may have noticed some new faces amongst our staff this term. Mrs Trish
Meissner is working in our classes supporting students T-Fr. Mrs Fiona Burke is
working in our office on Wednesday supporting our end of year administration
tasks. Mrs Jane Chapman supports students on Friday’s both in class and at
sport. I am sure you will make them feel welcome at our school when you see
them.
Mufti Day
Please be aware that there is a mufti day on Monday. Students are allowed to
wear casual clothes. Please ensure that students are suitably attired; enclosed
shoes are essential (no thongs), no singlet or midriff tops. A hat will be required
for playtimes.
School Photos
Tuesday 6 November is school photo day. All students are to wear full school
uniform and arrive to school on time. Please return the envelopes that were
supplied to each child if you are intending to purchase photos. All students will
have an individual photo on this day. To celebrate our great school, we have
organised for a whole school photo, which will be on display in our foyer. If your
child does not have permission to publish, they will not be part of the whole
school photo, nor their class photo.

KT Tigers In mathematics we are learning to make equal groups.
The Tigers were provided a collection of pop sticks and a collection of plastic smarties. Boys and girls
made a triangle using three sticks. I asked the students to then place a smartie on each of the corners of
the triangle. The students then counted the number of smarties on the triangle.
We repeated the process for a second triangle. The students counted the total number of smarties placed
on the two triangles. What if I made a third triangle? Lots of counting on today. Yipee!
In Literacy students explore the themes of 'Everybody is different' and 'Persistence' as well as adjectives
and the concept of 'opposites'
Introducing “Where is the Green Sheep” has also allowed us to do an Author study on Mem Fox. Mem Fox
is an Australian Author who has written many family favourites, including “Time for Bed”, “Koala Lou”, ‘The
Magic Hat” and “Possum Magic”.
Making connections with the Author has motivated students in their reading. The next time students paid a
visit to our classroom book shelf, within minutes they ran back to me with Mem Fox books in their hands!
They were so excited that her
books were in our room on our
shelf!

5/6D Term 4 is the busiest term in the 5/6 classroom! The calendar is quickly filling up; high school transition, Shine
and Strength programs, Remembrance Day, Presentation Day, Year 6 Farewell… and there’s more to
come! Soon enough we will be preparing for our 20c Fair, raising money for the Year 6 gift to the school. It
is a very busy term filled with fun, team building activities.
This term we have been reading a novel called ‘How To Bee’ written by Andy MacDibble. The book is set in
the future in a world where bees are extinct and the job of the bees (pollinating) must be done by humans
instead. The main character, Peony, really wants to be a bee. She uses a special pollinating stick that she’s
made, attaching feathers on the end. She dips the stick into a bag of pollen that has been collected and
uses the stick to pollinate the apple trees.
This week we were amazed to see photographs of a county in China called Hanyuan County. This place is
the pear capital of the world, and as a result of pesticide use the bees here are so few in numbers that
pear production was greatly reduced. And so humans have begun doing the job of bees, hand pollinat-
ing the pear flowers, just as Peony does in our novel. It made us sad to realise that bee extinction is a po-
tential reality and the effects of this could be huge. Mrs Deards

1/2D Dragonflies Welcome back to Term 4! It’s hard to believe there is only 7 weeks of school left this year. This term
will be another busy term with lots of things happening including presentation day, the swimming
carnival, weekly sporting activities and ‘Carrington’s Got Talent’ so be sure you check the newsletter calendar
and keep the dates free.
This week we have been looking at Aboriginal culture and dreamtime stories in our ‘Celebrating
Differences’ unit. We have also been looking at Aboriginal art and some of the symbols that are
used in Aboriginal paintings. Over the course of the unit we will be looking at a number of different
cultures including Italian, Nigerian, Chinese and Indian. If any parents or carers have any family
heritage from these cultures and would like to share it with our class, please contact Mrs Durie. We
would love you to come and visit our classroom and share your family history and culture with us.
We have been focussing on long and short vowel sounds in literacy as well as the initial consonant
blends ‘ch’, ‘sh’, and ‘wh’. We hoped you liked our magic ‘e’ song we sang at assembly this morning.
Our next assembly will be in week 8 on Friday, 7th December.
Thank you Mrs Durie
1/2C Caterpillars Over the first few weeks of school 1-2 have been looking at the con-
cept of diversity. We viewed the picture book Elmer written by David
McKee in order to explore difference.
Elmer is a colourful, patchwork elephant. One day, he decides that
he wants to look like all the other elephants, and paints himself grey
in order to 'blend in'. Once painted, his friends no longer recognise
him until he lifts his trunk and, at the top of his voice, shouts "Boo!". The
other elephants immediately realise that the grey elephant must be
Elmer and applaud him for his best joke ever. When it begins to rain,
the grey paint that Elmer has covered himself with starts to disap-
pear, and Elmer's "true colours" are revealed, much to the delight of his friends, who preferred his
multicoloured and fun loving personality. Following their happy reunion, the elephants reassure
Elmer that they love him because of his differences, and not in spite of them, and they celebrate
by painting themselves in multi-coloured paint in recognition of Elmer's unique appearance and
personality.
We decorated our own Elmer’s in the colours and pictures that represent our unique personalities
and backgrounds. They will be hanging in our room soon for you to have a look at. Mrs Cunningham
Sports Report Term 4 sports rotations started last week. Students had a wonderful time
participating in golf, lawn bowls, tennis, beach sports and sailing. Kin-
dergarten was lucky enough to be the first class to try out sailing and
had a lot of fun cruising around Carrington Foreshore in their Tacker din-
ghies. Sport rotations will continue for the rest of the term on a Friday
morning.
Last Friday Stage 2 and 3 attended the league tag gala day. Students
had a great time and showed a lot of sportsmanship. They improved
with each game and learnt new skills along the way.

3/4 M
Welcome back to term 4. This term is shaping up to be an exciting one with lots of fun activities
planned. Term 4 sport kicked off last week with 3/4M showcasing their tennis skills. We are par-
ticularly looking forward to sailing this term as well as beach sports. Last Friday 3/4M attended
the NRL League Tag Gala Day along with 5/6D. Students had a lot of fun learning new skills in a
modified game that combined rugby league with oztag.
In history this term with will be concluding our unit on First Contact where students have been
learning about the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders before European settlement
and the reasons for the journey of the first fleet. With Mr McGill, 3/4M is learning about social
justice issues experienced by people with disabilities.
There are a few important dates to remember. School photos are in week 4 and our annual
swimming carnival will be held in week 7. End of term 4 is always a busy time with presentation
day, Carro’s Got Talent and our end of year activities.
I look forward to finishing off the year with everyone in what will no doubt be a busy
but rewarding term.
