Carondelet High School is a woman-centered, independent Catholic secondary school serving young women in Contra Costa County, California. Carondelet welcomes young women regardless of faith affiliation while providing an environment grounded in the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph. After 50 years since its inception, Carondelet continues to educate young women in the spirit of excellence and innovation that characterizes its founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The school follows in the footsteps of brilliant and dedicated educators who established a holistic view of education that included the mind, body, and spirit, and who continue to engender a collaborative world view in the tradition of the Gospels. This approach is what empowers graduates to bring their many gifts and talents to the world through their leadership and service.

While the end result of a Carondelet education is young women who are prepared for university success, compassionate leadership, and a life rooted in values, the school offers a range of opportunities for students to hone their skills and develop their passions in student leadership, the arts, competitive sports, volunteerism, clubs and activities, and many other areas. The school ensures that each student is nurtured within an environment that values diversity and the contributions of all. Carondelet students become part of an authentic sisterhood that is a source of joy during their high school years and beyond.

With the decision of the current president to relocate to the East Coast at the conclusion of the 2019-20 school year, Carondelet seeks a dynamic and visionary Catholic leader to serve as its next president. The new president will work closely with a dedicated board of directors to lead the school community in its pursuit of a new chapter of excellence.

tHe SCHool

Carondelet is a four-year Catholic high school serving young women in grades 9-12 in Contra Costa County. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet founded the school in 1965 to provide girls with a values-based, woman-centered education and academic excellence, preparing students for leadership and service in the local and global community.

Thirty miles east of San Francisco, Carondelet is accessible to the region’s many cultural and educational resources. Students commute from an area that includes 53 zip codes, and the student body reflects the rich diversity of the East Bay area. Students have access to a full college preparatory curriculum, with offerings aimed at developing their hearts, minds, and bodies.

Carondelet High School is accredited by the National Catholic Education Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

aCademiCS

Carondelet is dedicated to inspiring excellence in its students, helping them to realize their full potential and discover their passions as women of heart, faith, and courage. The high school offers students a challenging college preparatory curriculum including elective courses in art, music, physical education, and computer science. Students can also choose from a full range of AP and Honors courses in English, math, social studies, modern languages, science, and visual and performing arts, as well as an Educational Resource Program for those students in need of academic support.

At the Junior and Senior level, Carondelet and De La Salle, an adjacent Catholic boys’ school, combine course offerings, giving the young women of Carondelet the experience of co-ed classes while they remain grounded in the strengths of an all-girl education. Faculty at Carondelet integrate the best educational innovations into the curriculum, including flipped classrooms, blended online/offline classes, and cultural immersion learning programs.

Carondelet also offers students the chance to earn college credit while in high school. Through a partnership with the College of the Siskiyous, students can enroll in online courses that fulfill general education requirements for California state colleges and universities. Throughout the year, Carondelet also provides various opportunities for students to travel both domestically and internationally for educational purposes. Recently students traveled to the Swiss Alps on a STEM-focused trip to learn about sustainability and to France to visit Normandy, Paris, and Mont St. Michel.

For those students who require additional support, Carondelet’s Educational Resource Program creates an educational environment committed to the intellectual, personal, and social development of each student. The school works to guide and empower students by connecting them with a broad network of support services provided by a dedicated educational team that includes college counselors, personal counselors, an academic advisor, dean of students, and case managers.



College PlaCement

Carondelet’s College Counseling provides a supportive environment in which students can identify their goals, reflect on their talents and passions, and make confident decisions about higher education. Counselors guide students in the self-reflection and evaluation, research, and application writing that is the key to a good college selection process.

Each student is assigned to a college counselor and begins meeting in the freshman year. The counselors build rapport and knowledge about each student over the four years, and help their students choose an appropriately challenging class schedule as well as providing advice about athletics, extracurricular activities (including summer opportunities), and standardized tests, in line with the students’ goals and interests.

artS and atHletiCS

The Visual and Performing Arts departments from Carondelet and De La Salle High Schools have partnered to increase awareness and support for both schools’ arts programs. Students perform in plays, musicals, band concerts, and dance performances and display their art in exhibitions throughout the year.

Carondelet’s Athletics program offers 27 teams and 13 California Interscholastic Federation sports to approximately 500 female student-athletes each year. Carondelet encourages students to develop athletic abilities consistent with the highest standards of scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship, and Catholic values. In the school’s history, Carondelet student athletes have competed for more than

40 league championships, 53 North Coast Section championships, and three state titles. Last fall, Carondelet opened its new athletics facility, the Carondelet Athletics Complex (CAC). The CAC is located 2.5 miles from the main campus and provides the athletes with state-of-the-art “home” fields where they host swimming, diving, tennis, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and water polo competitions.

Student life

At Carondelet every student can find an activity, club, athletic team, or honor society to enhance her personal development and her sense of purpose and connection to the school. Students have more than 50 clubs and co-curricular offerings to choose from, including Art Club, Asian Music Club, Current Events Club, and Girls in Tech, to name a few.

Other co-curricular offerings include spiritual life council, drama, honor societies, community service, photography, student government, yearbook, concert choir, band, and inter¬scholastic and intramural sports. Students also perform more than 50,000 hours of community service a year.

Through the Campus Ministry program, students nourish their faith and their own expressions of spirituality through school liturgies, retreats, community service, leadership, and immersion programs. Several prayer services and liturgies are held throughout the school year, and students are invited to participate as lectors, Eucharistic ministers, liturgical dancers, or music ministers. The Spiritual Life Council is the student leadership team in Campus Ministry and seeks to foster a sense of Catholic community at the school.



Carondelet has two wellness counselors on staff who create programming to support emotional wellness and student advocacy. The counselors coordinate and facilitate regular peer support groups. By appointment, they will meet with students individually for short-term needs. When needed, they will support families in providing community referrals for ongoing counseling support outside of Carondelet. The counselors address areas of personal concerns by listening, strategizing, and helping students to develop appropriate solutions and coping skills.

CamPuS

Carondelet’s main campus is made up of brick buildings with several inner and outdoor courtyards, providing many welcoming gathering spaces for the girls. The campus includes the academic buildings along with a small gym, administrative offices, and the chapel. A new Innovation Center is under construction, with a projected opening scheduled for November.

ConCord, California

Just 30 miles from San Francisco, Carondelet is close to the vibrant offerings of the city as well as the natural beauty of the Briones Regional Park, Diablo Valley, Diablo Foothills Regional Park, and Mount Diablo State Park. In Concord’s town center is Todos Santos Plaza, where visitors can find a farmers market, free summer concerts, and several restaurants. In nearby San Francisco and Oakland, sports fans can watch the Oakland A’s, the San Francisco Giants and 49ers, San Jose Sharks, and Oakland Raiders. Stanford University and Silicon Valley are just slightly over an hour away.

tHe PreSident SearCH

In the past six years under the leadership of President Bonnie Cotter and the Board of Directors, Carondelet has renewed and sustained a culture of innovation and excellence in girls’ education centered on the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The faculty has embraced curricular innovation, pedagogical collaboration, and a new faculty evaluation and compensation model. Additionally, the school opened the six-acre Carondelet Athletics Complex, elevating the experience of every student-athlete. This winter, with the opening of the Jean Hofmann Center for Innovation, the school will add 18,000 square feet of flexible space designed to facilitate collaboration and celebrate community. With this momentum, Carondelet aspires to be a model of excellence in all aspects of education for young women.

The next president will partner with the Principal Kevin Cushing and a strong administrative team to lead a culture whose touchstone, the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, nurtures heart, faith, and courage in Carondelet students and the adults who work on their behalf. Indeed, this is an exciting opportunity for a Catholic leader called to work on behalf of this special community.

The next president will:

• Build on and maintain the current momentum to complete key projects and pursue continued excellence in all aspects of growth for girls – spiritual, social, and intellectual.

• Sustain the charism and mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet among the students, faculty, and staff. Alumnae, faculty, students, and parents look to the president to unite the school community around the vision of empowering young women to live with heart, faith, and courage and to respond to the needs of the time and make a positive difference.

• Honor the past, present, and future of Carondelet. This balance requires understanding how the experiences of previous generations of Carondelet graduates differs from those of the current generation, how to support inclusivity and transparency, and how to help the community identify and execute its goals for the future, especially in light of changing faith demographics and the expanding role of laypersons in the school.

• Support and sustain the sense of sisterhood and community that has characterized the Carondelet experience and has extended the impact of the Carondelet education to lifelong relationships.

• Nurture a spirit of philanthropy and build on the outstanding development efforts of the past several years to support new facilities, programs, and endowment.

• Evaluate enrollment trends and marketing strategies, and convey the excellent value proposition of a values-based and academically rigorous academic program that welcomes all faiths.

• Identify and nurture the next generation of Carondelet leaders among the faculty and administrative team.

The next president will need to be an entrepreneurial leader with outstanding communications skills who can inspire the Carondelet community and create demand for the unique gifts of a high profile Catholic education. Understanding the powerful core elements of the Carondelet value proposition and differentiating the school from competitive alternatives will be critical for the school going forward. To qualify for this outstanding opportunity, a candidate will need to be Catholic and an accomplished servant leader with proven leadership experience. The board welcomes candidates from other Catholic or independent schools as well as accomplished executives from other mission-critical career venues such as higher education; non-profit foundations, associations, charities, and the like; or the corporate, civic, and professional services arenas.

While knowledge of education and school operations is desired, other qualities and experiences are also highly valued, such as the ability to inspire and lead a high performing team. This is a wonderful opportunity for a faith-filled leader eager to build on the past while creating a bold new vision for the future.
