RESEARCH ACTIVITYArtificial Heart Research and Development (1991 - present): This multifaceted research effort is aimed at improving the design of existing artificial heart devices, and toward the development of a novel magnetically-levitated, computer optimized blood pump -- named

the Streamliner artificial heart. The theoretical arm of this research entails the use of mathematical models to describe and comprehend the flow fields within blood-wetted cardiovascular devices and for simulating the interaction of these devices with the cardiovascular system.

Experimental efforts include in-vitro flow visualization tests as well as in-vivo experiments, and human investigations. Collaboration is derived from investigators both within the University and from other institutions (including NASA/Langley Research Center, University of California Santa Barbara, and Carnegie Mellon University). A novel aspect of this research is the concept of coupling computer optimization with fluid dynamics analysis. The intent in combining these technologies is to provide artificial organ designers a powerful tool for rapidly developing devices with superior fluid dynamics.

In 1998, the Streamliner became the first maglev rotary pump to be implanted in animals. In 1999, this research was recognized by IEEE who granted their annual Control Systems Award to Antaki and BE Paden.

Blood Rheology & Damage (1991-present): This is a collaborative effort with Dr. Kameneva in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. It is directed at developing improved constitutive models for describing and predicting blood flow behavior -- in natural blood vessels and in artificial devices. This research is also aimed at understanding the implications of artificial circulatory support upon the damage of blood cells and alteration of the physical properties of blood.

Surgical Brachytherapy Device for Implantation of Radioactive Seeds (1997-present): In collaboration with the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh, developed instrument for laproscopically introducing radioactive pellets for radiation therapy. Collaborators include Joel Greenberger, MD, Richard L. Simmons, MD, and Philip Schauer, MD. US Patent pending.

Rapid Prototyping of Bronchial Stent for Lung Transplant Patient (1993): This project involved the use of serial CT imaging and stereolithography to produce a three-dimensional replica of the bronchial airway (lumen). The replica was then used to construct a custom-fit stent for a lung transplant patient. This involved coordinating cardiac clinical staff, radiologists, engineers and engineering students, and rapid-prototyping technicians.

Computational Fluid Dynamics and Optimization (1992-present): Computer-based initiative aimed to capitalize upon state-of-the-art supercomputing towards modeling and optimizing cardiovascular devices. Collaborators include O Ghattas, PhD and C Amon, PhD, from Carnegie Mellon, Y Husseini, PhD and T Gatsky, PhD, from NASA/ICASE, and KR Rajagopal, PhD, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University.

Accelerated Testing of Pulmonary Occluder (1989): Designed experimental apparatus and protocol for accelerated testing.

Solvent Dissolution of Gallstones (1989): Assisted design of novel method for rapidly dissolving gallstones in-vivo: including specialized cannula and computer-controlled pumping circuit.

Measurement of Capsular Contracture (1988-1989): Capsular contracture is the leading cause of failure of breast implants. Compliance chambers used in artificial hearts also suffer from this failure mode. The objective of this series of studies was to assess the efficacy of a new breast implant design. Prototypes were implanted in rats and were tested for capsular contracture. My involvement included the design and fabrication of the testing apparatus and the subsequent analysis and interpretation of the biomechanical data. The majority of manufacturers have subsequently adopted similarly designed implants.

Cardiac Image Analysis (1987-1991): This research involved the development of three-dimensional computer techniques for tracking the motion of the heart from MRI and echocardiographic images. This research resulted in the development of unique fiduciary markers for motion tracking and computer programs for cardiac gated imaging.

Hemodynamic Pulse Duplicator Apparatus Development (1986-1992): Developed novel pulsatile perfusion circuit for conducting various vascular experiments in-vitro. US Patent issued.

Assessment of Ventricular Function (1985-1990): Studies conducted in humans to evaluate right ventricular function during mechanical left ventricular assistance. Cardiac data was obtained at the time of surgery by sonomicrometry and by high fidelity plethysmography. Novel strategies were developed for the fabrication and implantation of piezoelectric crystals to be used in sonomicrometry.

Myocardial Biomechanics (Thesis Topic): A study of the rheological (stress-strain) properties of the heart in humans. A nonlinear orthotropic biomechanical model of the intact heart was developed to quantify the relationship between myocardial stress, strain, and stiffness. Experimental data was obtained via NMR imaging coupled with three dimensional image reconstruction. Additional instrumentation was developed to measure ventricular pressure (via fiber optic pressure catheters) and electrocardiogram for the purpose of synchronizing NMR acquisition to the patient's heart beat -- a challenging task within the noisy NMR environment. Future work will include finite-element computer implementation of the model on the Cray supercomputer.Capsule Summary of Contributions
