A BOOK WITH A LASTING IMPACT — THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF TEARS
LAST WEEKEND the MontereyPeninsula had jazz and musicians comingout of its ears. This weekend it will be wordsand idea coming out of the mouths of writersas the Monterey Peninsula becomes the liter-ary center of the country with the Authors &Ideas Festival.
The festival is about what’s on the mindsof the authors, but it becomes all aboutbooks, if you want to take the authors’ ideashome with you. If you’re lucky, one of thosebooks may change your life.
On Facebook, there’s a sort of gamewhere one friend lists 10books that had an impact onhis life, and then invites otherfriends to post lists of theirown.
When I saw it, I gleefullyjumped in — first of all to seewhat close friends read, andsecondly, because it made me think of booksI consider important.
Some of the books friends listed were:“To Kill a Mockingbird,” “The Catcher in theRye,” “Sophie’s Choice,” “A Tree Grows inBrooklyn,” and “Prince of Tides.” All verygood choices.
My list included “By Love Possessed,” byJames Gould Cozzens, showing how the lifeof a pillar of the community can unravel inthe space of 48 hours, because of an indis-cretion. A tragic hero as mournful as any cre-ated by Shakespeare.
Hemingway, Wharton, Steinbeck, and thecontemporary poet, Billy Collins, appearedon my list, too.
After posting it, I realized my list consist-ed of books I liked, rather than books thathad an impact on me. Aside from the Bibleand spiritually themed books I could onlythink of one book that had such a profoundimpact on me that it caused me to get intouch with the author. The book is “The Yearof Magical Thinking,” by Joan Didion.
Didion is one of my favorite writers.Another is her deceased husband, JohnGregory Dunne. I’ve read just about every-thing Dunne published. His book of essays,
“Quintana and Friends,” has been a fixtureon my nightstand since 1978. The“Quintana” in the title is their adopteddaughter, Quintana Roo Dunne. The openingessay is about her being adopted as ababy. Dunne wrote subsequent articles thatmentioned Quintana. It was almost as if Iwatched her grow up through his writing.
When I read Didion’s book, “The Year ofMagical Thinking,” which deals with hergrief and mourning for her deceased hus-band, I discovered she and I had been livingparallel lives. Our spouses had died within amonth of each other in 2003. We both hadlived on the Palos Verdes peninsula inSouthern California. We were both dealing
whether or not they are grieving for a lovedone because Didion’s opening line: “Lifechanges fast. Life changes in an instant. Yousit down to dinner and life as you know itends,” is a vivid reminder that “In the midstof life we are in death.”
There was something I wished I couldtalk to her about. One moment her husbandwas alive, the next moment he wasn’t. “Yourcancer has metastasized to your liver,”amounts to the same thing. It just takeslonger. Did she understand that being pre-pared doesn’t change anything? “Lifechanges fast. Life changes in an instant. Yougo for a routine check-up and life as youknow it ends. Grief, when it comes, is neverwhat you expect it to be.”
Then something magical happened. I senther a note, through her publisher, asking ifshe felt there was a difference between a sud-den death of a loved one, or one that lingersfor a year.
She kindly responded with a hand-writtennote. She told me she believed all deathswere the same, rather sudden or unexpected,and that she viscerally understood it whenQuintana died.
Yes, sadly I learned that Quintana died atage 39 in 2005. That’s when the tears came— from somewhere way back — a place Ithought I had left behind — but realize I’llprobably never leave. There was an inexpli-cable lightness to the tears, though, for onewoman whose life I will always celebrate,and for another, whom I may never knowpersonally, but whose life will remain irrev-ocably intertwined with mine because herbook had such a lasting impact on me.

with grief. The two of us were deep into“magical thinking,” a peculiar kind of mad-ness, where the bereaved wishes so hard forsomething, he believes he can make it hap-pen.
“Grief, when it comes, is nothing weexpect it to be,” she writes. Didion thoughtthat by wishing, she could bring her husbandback. Precisely my own mad, magical think-ing.
And as if her husband’s death was notenough, Quintana, in her 30s, had lapsed intoa coma from pneumonia and septic shockfive days before John Dunne passed away.Blessedly, I did not have to deal with a seri-ously ill child.
I had to close the book several timeswhile trying to read the first few chapters. Itwas too real. Someone asked Didion whatthe biggest difference is in her life was sinceher husband’s death. Her answer was crush-ingly accurate:
“I’ve noticed how old I’ve become,” shesaid. “To each other, John and I alwayslooked the same as the day we met.”
I remember having the same thoughts.Didion put a face on grief. It is the vulnera-ble naked look one sees on the faces of sur-vivors of devastating natural disasters.
Didion tells of a woman whose husbanddied while they were traveling away fromhome. The woman, because of her “magicalthinking” — her attempt to reverse the out-come — said she had to get home so her hus-band could find her. It was then I understoodwhy I was subconsciously upset about mov-ing from our house into an apartment severalmonths after my wife died. How would shefind me?

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Two subjects reportedinside a vehicle on Mission Street screaming ateach other. No physical altercation observed.The vehicle raced off as one occupant yelledout for help. A search for the vehicle and occu-pants was conducted with negative results.
Pacific Grove: Subject, a 41-year-old male,was contacted on Sunset Drive during a trafficstop and found to be unlicensed. Subject issued
a notice to appear and released.Pacific Grove: Dispatched to a dispute
between neighbors on Lighthouse Avenueregarding their cats. One claimed to have over$1,500 in vet bills for his cat from the ongoingfights with the other neighbor’s cats. The twoneighbors were on their roofs, and one waschasing the other’s cat with a stick. He admittedhe chased the resident’s cat off his property witha stick, but said he meant to scare the cat only.They will pursue civilly.
Pacific Grove: Traffic stop conducted on a42-year-old male on Pine Avenue for an equip-ment violation. Driver found to be driving whilehis license was suspended. The driver wasarrested, booked at PGPD, and released on acitation.
Pebble Beach: An unknown suspect stole abackpack from an unlocked vehicle parkedalong the side of the road.
Carmel Valley: Via Contenta residentreported unknown subject shot at the residencewith a BB rifle. BB rifle recovered; investiga-tion continues.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject reported los-ing a wallet about three days before.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Monte Verde Streetresident reported a hit-and-run accident involv-ing and large tractor-trail combo hitting a treelimb and leaving without making a report.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Police, fire and ambu-lance responded to a report of a fall on cityproperty.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Restraining order
received in the mail about parties on Santa Rita.Carmel-by-the-Sea: Traffic stop on
Junipero Street for a vehicle code violation, andthe 61-year-old male driver was found to bedriving on a suspended driver’s license. Driverwas cited, and the vehicle was impounded for30 days.
Pacific Grove: A traffic stop was conduct-ed on Shafter at 0248 hours for vehicle codeviolations. The driver was found to have a sus-pended driver’s license. An odor of marijuanawas detected, and heroin paraphernalia was inplain view. A search of the vehicle revealed ille-gal narcotics and drug paraphernalia. The 22-year-old female driver was arrested, booked andreleased on her own recognizance.
Pebble Beach: Citizen struck her elderlymother during a dispute. She broke the innerdoor of the her freezer, smashed her cell phone,disconnected the landline telephone inside, andcut the telephone lines outside the home.Citizen was arrested and taken to the MontereyCounty jail.
Carmel area: Person reported trespassersusing forested property for gatherings at night.Several items have turned up missing over thepast two weeks.

Big Sur: An unemployed 53-year-old male from SanFrancisco threatened to shoot other campers, a male and femalefrom Los Angeles, on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road in Big Sur.When contacted by deputies, the suspect was found to be in pos-session of a flare gun that had been converted into a short-bar-reled shotgun. The flare gun was capable of firing .410 gaugeshotgun shells. Ammunition was located at the scene. In addi-tion, the suspect had a crossbow and a pellet rifle. The suspectwas arrested and taken to Monterey County Jail.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A vehicle was stoppedon Ocean Avenue at 0101 hours for CVC viola-tions, and the 17-year-old juvenile driver wascited. A juvenile passenger, also 17, was deter-mined to be intoxicated and was later transport-ed to CPD to be released to a parent on a cita-tion.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Sewage overflow wasnoted from the grounds of a theater leaking intothe street. Fire department assessed the situa-tion and called Monterey CountyEnvironmental Health for further review. Thesewage did not reach the storm drain, butCarmel Area Wastewater District was sum-moned in order to vacuum what residual mate-rial and fluid pooled along the street front.Follow-up to be coordinated via the MontereyCounty Health Department.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Dolores Street residentreported a suspicious subject had driven aroundthe block three times and feared he was follow-ing her. An area check was made, but the sub-ject was gone upon officer’s arrival.
Big Sur: Deputies responded to a report of avehicle burglary. The victims flagged down apassing California Highway Patrol officer. TheCHP officer went in search of the suspect vehi-cle described by the victims and radioed in theinformation. The suspect had smashed a carwindow, pulled out the wires from under thedash and took several items before fleeing.While on route to the area, deputies were askedto conduct a welfare check of a man at highwaycall box 632. A man was reporting his familyhad been killed and dumped in the river. Uponarrival, deputies noticed the man was in a simi-lar vehicle described by the victims of the carburglary. He advised his family was fine, but hehadn’t slept in nearly a week. The victims werebrought to the scene and able to positively iden-tify the suspect vehicle. The man, an unem-ployed 28-year-old Benicia resident, admittedto attempting to steal their vehicle, because his
own was nearly out of gas. The victim’s proper-ty was recovered, and the suspect was bookedinto county jail for making a false report of anemergency, attempted vehicle theft, vandalismand burglary. Held with bail set at $10,000 dol-lars.

Carmel Valley: Carmel Valley residentreported an ongoing problem with his neighbortrespassing.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A vehicle was stoppedat 0041 hours at San Carlos and Ocean for CVCviolations, and the 17-year-old juvenile driverwas found to be DUI of alcohol. A 21-year-oldmale passenger in the vehicle was also arrestedfor outstanding warrants out of MontereyCounty.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Three forced-openplastic security cases for entertainment mediafound on Mission Street.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Junipero Serra Schoolteacher reported sometime over the weekend,possibly last night, unknown persons entered aclassroom and dumped trash outside and movedchairs around. A note was also found in theclassroom, that was not addressed to anyone inparticular. No damage was caused to the school.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Driver struck a parkedvehicle on Eighth Avenue, causing minor dam-age.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A 60-year-old maledriver was stopped on Rio Road for a CVC vio-lation and determined to be operating his motorvehicle on a suspended driver’s license. Thedriver was cited and released at the scene.
Pebble Beach: A Pebble Beach residentreported theft of jewelry out of her house. Noforced entry; possibly from a prospective buyerwhile the house was for sale.
Carmel Valley: A Southbank Road residentreported that his neighbor’s front door wasopen, and it appeared that no one was home.Deputies checked the house and found nothingsuspicious. The residence was secured.Big Sur: Citizen stated that an unknown sus-pect burglarized his vehicle on Highway 1 nearmile marker 51.
