North Carolina Essential Standards

•Students in 8th grade will continue to build on the 4th/ 5th grade introductions to North Carolina and the United States by embarking on a more rigorous study of American History.

•The main focus of the course will be the critical events, people, issues, and developments in the state and nation from the Revolutionary Era to contemporary times.

•We will be comparing the relationships of geography, events, and people to the political, economic, technological, and cultural developments that shaped our existence in North Carolina and the United States over time.

The standards are organized around 5 strands:

Unit 1: North Carolina Geography and American History Preceding the Revolutionary War

Unit 2: Revolutionary War and Creation of a New Nation

Unit 3: Civil War and Reconstruction

Unit 4: Progress of the Nation (Industrial Revolution, Immigration, and Progressive Era)

Unit 5: The World Stage (World War I, Great Depression, World War II)

Unit 6: Cold War and Civil Rights

Unit 7: Globalization in the Modern Era

What will we be learning about this year in American History?

1. Follow directions the first time they are given.

2. Raise your hand and wait to be called upon to speak.

3. Stay in your seat unless you have been given permission.

4. Keeps hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

5. No cursing or teasing.

•Approximately every four weeks, a progress report will be printed and should be returned to me with a parent signature. You are encouraged to monitor your child’s progress in each class online by using PowerSchool for Parents.

•35% of quarter grade•Classswork includes a variety of assignments such as warm-ups, quizzes, group work, in-class tasks, and participation.

Formal Assessments

•65% of quarter grade•Formal assessments include a variety of assignments such as tests, comprehensive writing assignments, and projects.

Grading Breakdown

GRADING SCALE * It is important for assignments

A 100-93 to be turned in on time,

B 92-85 however, late work will be

C 84-77 accepted for partial credit.

D 76-70 The material will not be

F Below 70 learned if the assignment is

not completed.

Grading Scale

• (1) 5 subject spiral notebook • Blue/black and red ink pens • Colored pencils with sharpener • Pencils and erasers • 6 glue sticks or 3 rolls of tape• highlighters• Folder and notebook paper • Student Id cards visible at all times• Agenda

Required Supplies

• Check Mrs. Schratzmeier’s website under “agenda/make-up work” to see what work was missed and update table of contents for interactive notebook.

• Go to the make-up work binder in the classroom and get the missed assignments.

• Ask a classmate or the teacher to see their notebook to get any missing notes. (I will be keeping a notebook of my own that students can use as a guide if they are absent.).

• Turn in make-up work within 5 school days from the time of the absence.
