Hospitality, Dining and Entertainment win big in Carlsbad BY CAROLINA ALBAN-STOUGHTON Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce

In this article we’d like to recognize the Stay and Play winners of the 2018 Annual Business Awards, not only for the outstanding work they do, but also for the tremendous positive influence they have in the Carlsbad community.

On the night of March 16, Museum of Making Music Executive Direc-

tor, Carolyn Grant, sent a group text to her staff. “I don’t usu-ally intrude on their private time (Friday night!) but in this instance I thought it was worth it!” The Museum Of Making Music had just won the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s Com-munity Impact Award, which was presented to Grant at the 2018 Business Awards and Board Installation Dinner. Soon after the text about the win went out, many more came back - her elated staff sharing on the pride and joy of such an impor-tant recognition. “It gives us a boost of confidence. We carry out our laser focused work day after day, month after month, year after year, and it is a wonderful feeling to be recognized for that work, and to know it has been noticed and appreciated by the community.” (The Museum of Making Music, tied in this cat-egory with NRG Energy, Inc.)

The Land & Water Com-pany chef and owner, Robert

Ruiz, had just barely settled at his table. His hectic schedule at the restaurant almost prevented him from attending the dinner. But he arrived just in time to hear his name and restaurant announced as the winner of the Innovation Award. “I walked in,

more important because he was nominated alongside businesses from a range of industries, (such as Compound Solutions, Inc., which shared the recognition in that category.) “It was a huge vic-tory for the restaurant, for the staff, for everybody that’s here, for the brand in general, for people to see that we are in a cat-egory of our own and that there’s plenty of talented people, but it’s our work ethic that sets us apart,” said Ruiz adding that his staff got the good news from people who visited the restaurant after being at the awards ceremony.

FROM THECHAIRMAN

Chairman of the Board CARLSBAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Award-Winning workplacesBack in March, I had the plea-

sure of joining several hundred of you at our 2018 Annual Business Awards Dinner held at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa. The evening is the Chamber’s marquee event whose purpose is to recognize excellence among members of all sizes.

My employer, NRG Energy, Inc. was one of the winners in the Community Impact category. NRG invests in non-profit orga-nizations that are meaningful to its employees in hundreds of communities across the country, by matching employee monetary contributions. The company also provides charitable funds based on the number of hours volun-teered by its employees, and each year every NRG employee spends “Positive NRG” day away from the office and working in the community.

Of all the opportunities NRG has provided me, I am most grate-ful that I was able to discover a passion for service. My day job at NRG involves the commercial management of large wind and solar energy plants. But many mistakenly assume that I manage community relations because I have had a platform to meet so many amazing people and orga-nizations, and to get involved.

One such organization near to

my heart is the winner of the Lead-ership Development Award, The Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank / North County Food Bank. Behind the numbers - 26 million pounds of food distrib-uted a year and nearly 400,000 neighbors served each month - are the people who make it happen. The Food Bank provides its team members training opportunities, including the LEAD San Diego program, conferences, workshops and tuition reimbursement. Food Bank employees put their leader-ship skills to practice by training and mentoring more than 400 partner agencies.

Anyone who donates to a charity expects their dollars to directly impact the intended beneficiaries. The staff of the Food Bank fulfills that promise to a degree almost unheard of – more than 93 cents of every dollar received is spent directly on food and programs for the hungry.

Health and Wellness Award winner, Easy Life Management, Inc. was founded by Rachel Ivanovich with the goal of creat-ing a culture with work-life balance at its core. Juggling a career, rais-ing young children and graduate school, she didn’t find that support at her then-employer, so she forged her own path.

Twelve years later, she has grown the tax and financial ser-vices business to a staff of seven serving 700 clients. Where some may think a health and wellness program means a gym member-ship and healthy snacks, Rachel has taken a holistic approach. Her team members regularly set 10-day goals in five areas to which they hold each other accountable: spiritual, family, business, financial and personal. Rachel believes that the energy created in the work environment is contagious and that her clients respond positively to it.

Each of these winners has demonstrated that culture and investment in their employees is a core reason for their suc-cess. Hopefully all of these win-ners will inspire you. We will highlight small businesses at our 2018 Small Business Awards Luncheon, which takes place on October 12. We look forward to your nominations.

Waste Management and the City of Carlsbad congratulate Luxtera, Inc. for being recognized as a

RECYCLING CHAMPION

Luxtera, Inc. was recognized for utilizing best practices to reduce waste and increase recycling.

http://northcounty.wm.com

To be recognized as a RECYCLING CHAMPION, you must be a business in the City of Carlsbad and be able to demonstrate source reduction strategies, have a recycling program and keep recycling free from contamination. Nominate your business by contacting Waste Management at [email protected]. Include your business name, address, contact information, and why you are a RECYCLING CHAMPION!

THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT

CHAIRMAN’S CIRCLE

The Chairman’s Circle was created

to give prominent recognition to

the companies whose steadfast

support has helped the Chamber

remain a proven collaborative

force that brings business and

community together, energized

by a shared vision and passion

to transform our future.

A well- deserved recognition

You will notice through-out this issue that we are highlighting the eight win-ners of the Chamber’s 2018 Annual Business Awards. We are lucky to have these com-panies in Carlsbad because of the positive impact they have on our local economy, work-force and the community, and feel it is important to share their stories so you can learn more about them and what makes them stand out.

One of the things that all these businesses have in common is that they are guided by outstanding lead-ers - men and women who not only have a clear vision, but also the ability to sur-round themselves with the right people to carry out and execute that vision. That is why the theme for the July issue of the Carlsbad Busi-ness Journal will be “Vision-ary Voices”. This edition will help not only showcase strong business leaders in our community, but also take a look into what is behind the person that inspires people to work together towards a common goal.

As a CEO myself, I know I have benefited from many of the leading entrepreneurs in this area. As a CEO you never stop learning and I have been lucky to have continued to learn from the best. While some may see this position as the ulti-mate career goal, I have seen it as an chance to continue acquiring new skills and perfecting others.

We will be using this opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of our local CEOs, and with the hope that many who have the call to a position of lead-ership will be motivated by their stories.

Take Flight With UsCP Air is raising $20 million to help launch a better way to travel to North County San Diego, delivering on our vision to offer convenient jet service, increase local commerce and create new jobs for our community. Now you can help make it happen.

A VISION FOR THE COMMUNITYWhen California Pacific Airlines begins service, the impact on North County and service city communities will be immeasurable. CP Air not only brings the much needed convenience of jet service to North County (supporting business and leisure travel), but it will also drive significant regional economic growth and create new jobs. CP Air will be Southern California’s only truly hometown airline, an airline that our community will be proud of.

Launching an airline is a very complicated operation. For the last 4 years, we have worked to assemble the best team to meet all of the critical FAA regulation requirements

and we are proud to say that we continue to finalize the necessary steps towards formal certification.

We are fortunate to have passionate, early investors who share our vision and continue to work with us to meet our ongoing capital requirements. In order for us to finalize the launch process, we need to continue to raise the necessary funds to complete the certification process and initiate operational service.

With the JOBS Act now easing regulations on the funding of U.S. small businesses to spur growth and create more jobs, we are now able to invite our community to directly participate

in our vision and become a critical resource to help raise the remaining funds needed to launch California Pacific Airlines.

FUELING A VISIONThe Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act is a law intended to jumpstart the economy by creating opportunities for small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs. For California Pacific Airlines, the JOBS Act means we can now invite more people to invest in our vision to bring a better way to travel to our North County communities.

Local airline seeking investors as it preps for take-offCARLSBAD — Ted

Vallas has a sky-high vi-sion for North County. The 96-year-old businessman and owner of California Pa-cific Airlines is calling out to the community to take part. As his airline prepares for take-off out of Carls-bad’s McClellan-Palomar Airport, he is seeking local investors for early boarding, so to speak.

It is paramount to Val-las that the community par-ticipates in CP Air. “I want this to be a North County owned and operated air-line,” he said. “I am a great believer in the community being behind this operation and getting involved.”

For Phase 1 of opera-tions, CP Air looks to offer commercial flights to San Jose, Sacramento, Oakland, Phoenix, Tucson, Reno and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Phase 2 will include service to Utah, Houston and var-ious other cities. “We are looking to start operations

in early summer,” Paul Hook, COO and executive vice president, said. “We will be starting with Em-braer 145 aircraft, which will give us quick turn-arounds. We can make sev-eral flights a day.”

Currently the airline is awaiting county approv-al before flights can begin, which Vallas anticipates will happen soon. “We are fully certificated for full scheduled service and char-

ter authorization,” Vallas said. “So we will start even if we are still waiting for the county. We are available and ready to fly today if we are called to do so.”

“The county is still doing its required due dil-igence, checking the envi-ronmental status,” Hook said. “We understand that really is the controlling fac-tor as to when we can start scheduled service.”

Vallas’ call to the com-

munity to be a part of CP Air did not go unheeded. John Barkley, the new CFO of CP Air, read about the in-vestment opportunity and jumped at the chance to be a part of local history. “My father was one of the last presidents of the old PSA airline,” Barkley said. He wrote Vallas a letter, and soon he came on board uti-lizing his experience as an attorney with a background in tax and accounting. “I grew up in the airline in-dustry. I never thought we would have another home-town airline in San Diego. The people in our region are fiercely loyal. Now that the Chargers have left, it feels like we have a hole in the community, we all want something to root for. CP Air gives North County a hometown team to be proud of.”

Along with pride, CP Air is poised to have plen-ty of benefits to the area. “We are looking forward

to bringing additional em-ployment, tax revenues and airport recognition,” Hook said. CP Air will bring an estimated 150 jobs to North County in its first year, which could multiply to 1,000 local jobs by year four.

“Our market area is about 50 percent business people up and down and all

throughout the West Coast,” Vallas added. “We will be bringing tourism into North County. The hotels, the restaurants will all benefit. Two local bank executives also advised me that they agree with me wanting to bring the community in as partners. Both Silvergate and FNBSocal banks asked

‘What can we do to help?’With business bound to

be booming, Vallas is reach-ing out to bring more local investors into the fold. “At present time I own 92 per-cent of the company,” he said. “I have about $15 mil-lion of my family’s and my own money invested. And now we’ve been authorized

by the SEC to sell stock lo-cally, and we’d like to keep it a definite low number of investors, primarily in North County.”

Criminal behavior research shows that a crim-inal’s decision to offend or not to offend is heavily influenced by the potential risk of getting caught rather than the reward of commit-ting the crime. Businesses can enhance the perceived risk of detection and appre-hension by implementing Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies. CPTED is defined as a multi-disci-plinary approach to deter-ring criminal behavior through environmental design. CPTED focuses

on deterring criminals by influencing the offender’s decisions through the use of layered physical deter-rents, like well-lit areas and CCTV cameras. This can be achieved by affecting the physical layout, social, and administrative environ-ment of the business.

CPTED has 4 core principles:

Natural Surveillance occurs by designing the placement of physical features, activities and people in such a way as to maximize visibility of the space and its users, fostering positive social

interaction among legiti-mate users of private and public space.

• Keeping areas well lit.

• Eliminate hiding spots by cutting down hedges, removing trees or bushes, and locating dumpsters away from buildings to eliminate hiding spots.

• Use Closed Circuit Tele-vision (CCTV) cameras to surveil areas. Putting up monitors or signs will deter criminal activity by letting people know they

A more sustainable Carlsbad UnifiedApple cores. Yesterday’s

homework. Plastic bottles and juice boxes. Extra copies of handouts. Sandwich bags.

Over 11,000 students and hundreds of staff members can generate a lot of trash. Here in Carls-bad we believe we are edu-cating the environmental stewards of the future — so we are striving to practice on campus the sustainable behaviors we teach in our classrooms.

In Spring 2016, Carls-bad elementary schools received a $29,000 grant from the Carlsbad Chari-table Foundation for the “Recycling Education and Infrastructure for Carls-bad Schools” project. At that time we piloted new programs, such as “twin-ning” trash receptacles (one regular and one recycle) in classrooms; campus Green Teams; lunch sorting sta-tions; and “tap ’n’ stack” lunch trays, which could then be up-cycled.

Since then we have con-tinued to take a deeper look at recycling and sustain-ability, district wide.

We are now in a partner-ship with the City of Carls-bad, which received a grant to help us evaluate and expand our recycling prac-tices. California law AB341 – Mandatory Commercial Recycling— requires cities to work with large commer-cial enterprises to improve their recycling practices and decrease the amount

of trash sent to landfills. Funded by the city’s grant, an environmental/recycling consultant has completed an audit of the recycling habits at all nine of our ele-mentary schools, and has made recommendations for improvements. The city is also helping us buy blue recycling bins for class-rooms and provide training for our custodial staff, who are on the front lines when

it comes to recycling. Fur-ther, the city is working with I Love a Clean San Diego to provide recycling awareness assemblies for our students. Moving for-ward, we hope to expand this effort to our middle and high schools.

“The city’s recycling team is excited to collabo-rate with CUSD to improve its recycling programs,” said Avecita Jones, Man-agement Analyst, Environ-mental Management, for the City of Carlsbad. “We envision many opportuni-ties for the city and CUSD to work together.”

Carlsbad Unified is also finalizing a recycling con-tract with Urban Corps of San Diego County. Urban Corps will install beverage container recycling bins

on each of our elementary campuses, recycle the con-tainers for deposit refunds, and then return the profits to the schools.

In addition, Carlsbad High School’s Green Team and Student Services Spe-cialist Rosemary Eshelman worked with surfer Rob Machado’s foundation to secure funding for water bottle refilling stations at Carlsbad High School and Carlsbad Village Academy, cutting down on disposable water bottles on campus. We also received an addi-tional grant that will help us to install water bottle filling stations at our ele-mentary schools.

Because we believe in teaching students responsi-ble behaviors, environmen-tal and sustainability issues have long been integrated into CUSD’s curriculum, and many of our schools have taken the lead in community recycling efforts. But a robust and consistent recycling plan takes everyone working together to build capacity and keep up the momentum at the school sites.

Whether its Nutrition Services, or Maintenance and Operations, staff mem-bers working in the offices, or students having lunch, we must all commit to developing a culture where recycling is the norm. At Carlsbad Unified we are educating our students so that they develop positive recycling habits for life.

It’s no wonder visitors flock from all over the world to Carlsbad year-round. With one of the most temperate climates in the country, seven miles of pristine beaches, champion golf courses, award-winning accommo-dations, and a vibrant down-town, Carlsbad has a built-in recipe for success.

Carlsbad Village, also known as the Village by the Sea by its locals, has a heartbeat all its own. This walkable and bike friendly coastal enclave enjoys a relaxed, casual atmosphere, natural for a beach town, but is chic and contempo-rary at the same time. And, the great news is that it is all ours to enjoy every day and is the perfect destination to Stay & Play!

Carlsbad Village blends old and new seamlessly and literally offers some-thing for everyone. For our enthusiastic foodies, they can enjoy an authen-tic Mexican breakfast of Chilaquiles at Lola’s 7 Up Market & Deli in the Barrio (opened in 1944) and later that evening dine on Oysters Rockefeller at the new Bluewater Grill. Or, for an inspired lunch, relax on the Tamarack View Deck at Park 101 with their sig-nature BBQ Pork sandwich and a cold craft beer while watching the waves roll in.

Looking for a little family fun? Pedego Carlsbad Electric Bikes specializes in making memories with their exciting coastal tours and excursions. In addition

to gliding through town under electric power, you can also visit the Oceanside Pier, explore the lagoon and skim the coastline in a heli-copter before riding back to the Village.

All-Steinway designation hits the right notesChing-Ming Cheng

knows the importance of a quality instrument. As an associate professor of music at Cal State San Marcos and a renowned classical pianist, Cheng has performed for audiences around the world. While there are many companies making quality pianos, Cheng said there is some-thing special when it comes to Steinway & Sons pianos. “The goal for any music program is to become an All-Steinway School because then you know you can bring students to the next level,” Cheng said. “The potential and opportu-nities that the instrument can bring is immense.”

CSUSM students will see the impact for themselves now that the University has received the presti-gious All-Steinway School designation. Fewer than 200 colleges, universities and conservatories hold the All-Steinway School desig-nation worldwide. CSUSM joined this select group when Steinway represen-tative Robert Snyder made the designation official during an on-campus cel-ebration on April 9. “This is beyond my dreams,” Cheng said. “This marks the begin-ning of a new chapter for CSUSM’s music program.”

CSUSM’s journey to becoming an All-Steinway School began in fall 2014 when Cheng performed

as part of a fundraiser for an innovative music lab at the University. More than $100,000 was raised for the purchase of 30 new, 88-key digital pianos to replace the limited number of 61-key mechanical models previ-ously used by students. In October 2016, nearly $150,000 was raised for the purchase of a Stein-way D Concert Grand piano. Building on that

momentum, on April 9, 2017 the University pub-licly announced its goal to become an All-Steinway School, following a per-formance by Cheng at the California Center for the Arts Escondido. Exactly one year later, CSUSM received the prestigious designa-tion. “This milestone sym-bolizes the excellency of the fast-growing music program at CSUSM,” said Cheng, who performed on the University’s new Steinway D Concert Grand piano as part of the April 9, 2018 All-Steinway School celebration. “Being an All-Steinway School makes it possible for students to reach a level where they can explore and discover the immense possibility in creating music on an

instrument that provides the greatest potential in the creative art of music.”

CSUSM student Spencer Osborne found out first hand when he performed on the Steinway D Concert Grand as part of two stu-dent performances in early April of this year. “The tone is incredible,” said Spencer, who will graduate in spring 2019 with a degree in music composition. “It’s got a warm, rich sound.” Play-ing on the Steinway D pres-ents a new experience for CSUSM students. “The keys are deeper, they’re longer, you get more sound,” said Dana Burnett, a lecturer in CSUSM’s music depart-ment. “It’s like you’ve been driving a Volkswagen and all of a sudden somebody gives you a Tesla.”

To receive the All-Stein-way designation an insti-tution must meet certain criteria regarding owner-ship and maintenance of Steinway and Steinway-designed pianos, including an inventory of at least 10 pianos. CSUSM’s Steinway piano purchases were made possible by the Hunter Family Advised Fund at the Rancho Santa Fe Founda-tion; the David T. and Dorris E. Staples Foundation; the Epstein Family Foundation; Carolyn Funes; Carol Lazier and Jay Merritt; and the support of other generous donors who wish to remain anonymous.

State to survey employers on anti-harassment, diversity policies GAIL CECCHETTINI WHALEYCalChamber

The California Depart-ment of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) recently announced that it will survey California employers by telephone to ask about their anti-harassment and diversity policies.

The goal of the survey is to develop a clearer picture of how California employ-ers manage diversity and harassment issues, includ-ing anti-harassment and diversity policies.

Types of QuestionsEmployers will be selected

randomly for the phone interviews. The survey includes questions about:

Employers’ anti-discrim-ination, sexual harassment and general anti-harass-ment policies;

Employer-sponsored training on harassment and diversity issues;

Recruiting programs for women and minorities; and

Harassment complaint procedures.

According to the DFEH, company names will not be recorded on the surveys and only aggregate survey data will be released.

“Knowing more about California employers’ harassment and diversity

initiatives is key to the Department’s ongoing work to prevent work-place harassment and dis-crimination,” said DFEH Director Kevin Kish, in a statement. “We expect the results of the survey to provide important insights for policy makers and the public alike.”

Survey BackgroundThe survey was discussed

during a Fair Employment and Housing Council meet-ing last December and developed in consultation with a group of academics who study effective train-ing. The survey will tackle different industries and sizes of employers, based on EEO-1 data.

Task ForceThe survey is a product

of the DFEH Task Force on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment in the Work-place, formed in May 2016 to study the problem of sexual harassment, the effects of 10 years of harass-ment prevention training in the state and best practices to prevent harassment.

The Task Force previ-ously issued a Workplace Harassment Guide for Cali-fornia Employers that pro-vides DFEH-recommended practices for preventing and addressing all forms of workplace harassment, including harassment based on sex.

Best Place to Work in Carls-bad Award. At the end of the night, when the announcer read Park Hyatt Aviara as the winner, the news traveled fast throughout the venue, the excitement palpable in every corner. “After we won, I took the award around to different departments. Our colleagues were taking their pictures with the award, taking self-ies, and posting them on their own personal pages,” said Sullivan. “There are so many incredible companies here in Carlsbad. To be recognized as THE best place to work was a very special moment.”

Giving back

While these winners offer Carlsbad a great dining expe-rience, a wonderful place to stay and to work, and a fun environment to connect with music, it is their work behind the scenes that makes them even more remarkable. “We proudly support the local schools, the military, and work to protect the environ-ment,” said Sullivan. “Park Hyatt Aviara was recently awarded a $15,000 grant for the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation by Hyatt Hotels Corporation. This grant will be used to help support the foundation provide resources to maintain and develop this precious wetland.” They’ve also provided job search train-ing to Carlsbad High School students who are entering the workforce for the first time; and as a company that hires former military and veterans, they’ve donated to organiza-tions that work with these brave men and women.

For Grant, it is an honor to help people of all ages connect to music. This commitment goes beyond the traditional tasks of running a museum. “We provide interactive tours for students—preschool through university; intern-ships for high school and col-lege students; music making workshops for families; and for adults, a volunteer pro-gram and band and orches-tra programs. We also have a concert series for all ages and bring musicians from around the world (and close to home) to our intimate venue.” And nowadays when budgets for arts at schools are being cut, the museum is stepping in to fill that void. “The Museum of Making Music makes a difference in so many ways. A common theme amongst

visitors is how important the museum is in bringing music to school children, so many of whom no longer benefit from music programs in their schools.”

Carlsbad hasn’t been for-eign to the eating healthy, organic and sustainable wave. Ruiz, feels it is his duty to continue to expand this impact through his restau-rant and considers himself the flag bearer of sustainable dining in Carlsbad - which not only is good for people’s health but also for the local economy. “We are paying cash money direct to our local Carlsbad community, to local farmers that live here, to local fisherman that fish here,” said Ruiz. “We make everything here ourselves from scratch. So because we don’t purchase anything and resell it we are able to have pure control over what goes from our resources to a per-son’s plate and what they’re going to eat.”

To Ruiz it’s important to make sure the sustainability of his restaurant is “full cycle”, partnering with neighboring cities and organizations to create and collect commer-cial organic or restaurant grade organic waste that can be turned into compost. “Right now the compost site is in Oceanside and then pro-cessed back into soil, which is a high composting soil that gets sold back to the commu-nity. So If you’re going to put in five thousand homes in Bressi Ranch every single front yard in that community is going to need compost. You are basi-cally turning trash into trea-sure in that you are literally taking organic waste, com-posting it and turning it into a super high valuable natural nutrient rich organic soil and selling it as a commodity.”

Sharing the missionCompanies are made out

of people and the passion of people that work at these organizations is contagious. It is hard to walk into the Museum of Making Music and not want to see, experi-ment, and attend all their exhibits and programs. It is tempting to enter The Land & Wanter Co. and not have a natural desire to order everything from their menu. And it is very difficult to visit the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort without wanting to book at least one night stay. All of them know that, and would like to invite others to share in what makes them so unique.

“Often there is a percep-tion in hospitality that you have to sacrifice good cus-tomer service for high col-league engagement. That

isn’t the case here at Aviara. Being a 5-Star, 5-Diamond rated property, and receiv-ing this award, proves that you can have both and with the environment we provide there is a strong correlation between high colleague engagement and high cus-tomer service scores,” said Sullivan, who enjoys taking people around his beautiful workplace as though it were his own home.

Ruiz is as meticulous and passionate about his food as he is about his research, working with the federal government and institu-tions that focus on the ocean and its resources. “We went from opening up ten years ago and saying we want to serve the right fish, and then realized that no one knew what the right fish or proteins or food was.

So then we decided to make our own path and find out what is was. Now we work directly with projects, with all those entities, with new grants, building new kitch-ens inside these facilities to connect to thousands of sci-entists.” For Ruiz The Land & Water Co. is not just about serving good food it is about sharing information and solutions. “We have done a lot of events with food and medicine. You can you can come in here and learn and educate yourself, educate your family.”

“Our hope is that visitors will leave with a sense of how important the music products industry is to music, and to the well-being of communities over the world. In very simple terms, if people did not make, sell and use instru-ments, the world would lose an integral part of its vibrancy and happiness,” said Grand, who can’t hide her excitement about an exhibit coming out this summer called “Listening through the Lens”. “We will present a collection of music photography from famed photographer Henry Diltz. A musician himself, Diltz’s images shape the way we see—and hear—musical icons like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, the Doors, and Crosby, Stills & Nash.” The exhibition opens on June 9, 2018.

turning to entrepreneur-ship to help find this bal-ance. This development, called “mompreneurship,” is becoming more evident among local businesses.

Most mompreneurships begin as small, one-person shops that, with passion, blossom and grow. Some moms start a business because they need extra income to support a family, as was the case with Vonda Lee’s California Cheese-cakes in a Cup, which you may have seen at the Carls-bad Farmers’ Market. Lee began her business in her home state of Oklahoma, when she was a single mom trying to support herself and her two small chil-dren, while also working other jobs. Back then she returned from work and began baking her cheese-cakes in her home oven at night, then delivered them

to vendors in the morning. Sleep was a stranger.

After moving to Califor-nia she worked a job for a while, then after a health challenge she revived her business.“I decided I wanted to do what I wanted to do and started baking cheese-cakes full time,” Lee says.

The challenges were great, because she couldn’t create her blueberry, Eng-lish toffee and chocolate chunk Cheesecakes in a Cup at home. She needed a health certificate and had

to work in a commercial kitchen. And she had to figure all that out herself by researching online.

But hard work has resulted in success, and Lee employs three people to help make and deliver her products. Lee recently took the business wholesale and today you can find Califor-nia Cheesecakes in a Cup at four farmers markets and ten retail outlets. And now that her kids have grown, Lee can work her schedule around her grandchild.

Sarah Davis started her online business, Fash-ionphile, as a law student to help pay her school expenses. Today Fash-ionphile employs more than 100 people, operates showrooms in Beverly Hills and San Francisco, and is about to open one in New York City. Fashionphile also operates a distribu-tion center in the Carlsbad Research Center.

It all started in Davis’ home in 1999 with the crazy idea of selling preowned designer handbags and has expanded to include 7,000 merchandise listings on www.fashionphile.com. “I started selling on eBay before there was PayPal,” Davis recalled. At the time Davis and her husband already had one child, and they would soon have two. The business picked up, and Davis never practiced law. “The business was too much fun,” Davis recalled, and too successful to quit. “I was loving selling on eBay and I could do it wherever and whenever I wanted. It worked with the kids.”

As the business grew Davis sought professional advice and was told that to cope with the growth she would have to hire people. And that is a piece of advice she would pass on to pro-spective mompreneurs today.“If you have an idea that’s working, hire some-one to do the things you can hire away,” Davis says. “I loved the creative part of developing a brand and a culture,” Davis said, which she still does.

Davis encourages anyone with a business idea to take advantage of online tools to try it. “If you have an idea, a passion, you can test it out online through marketing platforms before you quit your job or rent space and buy a cash register,” she says. “It’s possible to start out in a way that’s not dis-ruptive.” And once the busi-ness begins to take off, “you get a rush out of the work you’re doing,” she says.

Today Fashionphile and California Cheesecakes in a Cup are two of 11.6 million women-owned businesses which employ 9 million workers and generate $1.7 trillion in revenue for the US economy.

And as mompreneurs, they have control. “I have the flex-ibility to do whatever I want – work my schedule around kids’ activities,” Davis says. “As an entrepreneur, you have more freedom.”

Aging and joint inflammation: It could be arthritisMembers of the baby

boomer generation are now in their 50s, 60s and even 70s and you can bet they are looking forward to living longer and living well.

But as their bodies change, they will need to become educated on common dis-eases associated with aging and to learn how to avoid injuries that often happen as we get older.

One ailment that affects many aging citizens is arthritis, or joint inflam-mation. It is a timely topic for discussion, especially for older adults.

What is arthritis?Arthritis is one of the

body’s natural reactions to disease or injury and is very common. More than 50 million Americans have been diagnosed with arthri-tis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention (CDC). It is more common among women and occurs frequently as people get older. The CDC estimates almost half of adults 65 and older have some form of arthritis.

Arthritis is not a single disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthri-tis and related conditions. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout are among the most common.

How is arthritis diagnosed?

Arthritis diagnosis often begins with a primary care physician performing a physical exam, and if

necessary, running blood tests and imaging scans to get to the source of the problem. Rheumatologists typically manage ongoing treatment for inflamma-tory arthritis, gout and other complicated cases. Orthopedic surgeons do joint surgery, including joint replacements.

“This is why it is vital for people to establish good relationships with their physicians so they have medical profession-als to turn to when health concerns like arthritis do arise,” says Scott Carstens, M.D., an internal medicine physician at Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley who special-izes in primary care and rheumatology.

Each type of arthritis can have different symptoms. Some do not have any symptoms outside the joint. Other forms cause fatigue, fever and a rash. Most types of arthritis show signs of joint inflammation, such as swelling and stiffness.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease marked by the breakdown

of the joint’s cartilage. Rheumatoid arthritis involves inflammation in the lining of the joints and/or other internal organs. Gout causes sudden, severe attacks of pain and swelling in some joints, most com-monly the big toe.

“Although arthritis is not preventable, there are steps people can take to reduce their risk of devel-oping the disease,” says Dr. Carstens, who recommends the following:

• Maintain a healthy weight“Excess weight puts

an extra strain on joints, which can lead to arthritis,” says Dr. Carstens.

• Eat a well-balanced, nutritious diet“Consuming foods rich

in calcium and vitamin D will help to strengthen bones and muscles,” says Dr. Carstens. Foods rich in vitamin D include sea-food, such as cod and wild-caught salmon, fortified milk and eggs. Yogurt, sar-dines, beans and almonds

are high in calcium, as well as other nutrients.

• Stay active and keep fitExercise helps develop

strong muscles, which can protect and support joints.

• Avoid injuryWhen you injure your

joints, such as while playing sports or due to an accident, you can damage cartilage and cause it to wear out more quickly. Avoid injury by using the proper safety equipment when playing sports and learn the correct exercise techniques.

When to see your primary care physician

If you think you are sus-ceptible to arthritis, see your primary care physi-cian. The damage from arthritis is usually progres-sive, and your physician can suggest treatments or lifestyle interventions that can slow the progress of arthritis.

This well-deserved recognition has made Compound Solutions stand out in a commu-nity that cares very much about sports, health and wellness.

Compound Solutions, Inc.’s owner and CEO, Matt Tiltow‘s vision for the company is to maximize human potential cog-nitively and physically and has a special interest in creating ingre-dients that can regulate sugar and insulin levels in patients with diabetes.

At the Carlsbad Chamber we look to celebrate passion-ate visionaries whose products and/or services create a positive impact in people’s lives. This

year’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award went to Amsety LLC’s founder, Mustafa Behan. Mustafa is in a unique position because he lives half of the time in Germany, yet he chose Carlsbad, California for his US office to support the US sales of his liver health nutri-tional bar.

When Mustafa became a member of the Carlsbad Cham-ber in 2017, his goal was to help his local staff become more involved in the local community in order to provide education on liver health and his product. He demonstrated his go-giver men-tality from the start by donating

hundreds of his bars to the Cham-ber for distribution to our mem-bers. His passion arose from his understanding that liver health affected a lot of people’s fami-lies and was driven to share his innovative solution to the unique needs of liver health patients.

These are two shining exam-ples of innovative entrepreneurs in our community. What they did to win these awards was not only to achieve success in their indus-tries, but also, they shared their stories with the local community they operate in. Independent of where these businesses come from (national or international sales), the companies and its employees are local, and it is for those local businesses and people that the Carlsbad Chamber exists. The Chamber is honored to have a duty to our members to pro-mote and share successes and inspiration. The opportunity to have your business selected to be celebrated is here, and simply starts with sharing your story.

are being watched.

Natural Access Control is used to complement mechanical and operational access control measures.

• Utilize maze entrances in public areas. Having a maze entrance cuts off straight-line access to a potential target, like a bank teller or cashier. Something as simple as a tension barrier that has to be navigated around can act as a deterrent.

• Use curbing and landscap-ing to direct automobile and foot traffic into a controlled, highly visible area.

Territorial Reinforcement measures make the normal user feel safe and make the potential offender aware of a substantial risk of apprehension or scrutiny.

• Use a single, clearly identifi-able, point of entry.

• Use structures to divert per-sons to reception areas.

• Implement a visitor badge system and require that all visitors are properly escorted around your business.

• Ensure receptionists have clear sightlines to all entrances and the ability to quickly and discreetly call for help.

Regular Maintenance of build-ings and surrounding property. • Well maintained areas send

the message that people notice and care about what happens to the area. This discourages vandalism and other crimes.

• Alongside maintenance, Target Hardening is another method used with CPTED. Target Hardening is making a building more difficult to forcibly enter. This can be achieved by using deadbolt locks on all doors as well as protective films on widows that can prevent “smash and grab” burglaries.

“At the City of Carlsbad Police Department, we have been utilizing the principals of CPTED for nearly

30 years. From churches and city parks to new housing develop-ments and the industrial corridor, CPTED helps us create spaces that are defensible by designing the risk for crime out and the opportunity for positive behavior in,” said Jodee Reyes, Community Relations Man-ager for the City of Carlsbad Police Department.

By utilizing CPTED’s strate-gies, you can help safeguard your business and deter a criminal from deciding to commit their crime at your business. CPTED keeps businesses one step ahead of crime and helps make the community a safer place.
