From the Principal Welcome back A very warm welcome back to term 2 to all our students and families. 

 Staff development Day On Wednesday 17th April, all staff spent the day involved in professional learning activities focussed on emerging educational issues and the use of technology in enhancing student literacy. We commenced the day at a joint Epping Community of Schools Presentation with Epping Boys High School and our local primary schools where our guest speaker Paul Higgins challenged us with emerging technologies and the impacts of change in the 21st century. Following this, we returned to school for a series of technology based sessions focussed on developing the literacy skills of students.  These professional learning days are important opportunities for staff to upskill and work collaboratively on our key priority areas.  Anzac Day Ceremony On Monday, the school held its Annual Anzac day ceremony. Students led the assembly superbly with performances from our boy’s choral group and thoughtful readings and reflections by Susie Talsi on the ANZAC story and the courage displayed and sacrifices made by so many men and women. Our thanks to Mrs Owens for coordinating the assembly and to Mrs Chan for preparing the music.  

NAPLAN TESTS 2011.  The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.  On Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May, all our Year 7 and 9 students will undertake the 2011 NAPLAN tests.  

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.  NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children.  All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for special provisions that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom.  An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.naplan.edu.au. By visiting this site, parents and students can see previous test questions and get a feel for the layout and requirements of the tests. I would encourage all students to familiarise themselves with this information and arrive at school ready to give their very best.  Test timetable for both Year 7 and Year 9

New student absentee text message service – parents required to update contact details. At the start of week 4, Term 2, the school will be introducing a text messaging service to notify a parent if their son or daughter is absent from school on that particular day. Parents of students in Years 7‐11 will receive a message at approximately 10.30am and parents of Year 12 will receive a message around 12 midday. These times allow rolls to marked, returned and processed through the front office and the data transferred to a parent mobile number. Parents of Year 12 receive their notification later than other years, to accommodate the flexible timetables of students, some of whom do not have their first lesson until Period 3.  For the system to operate as effectively as possible, it is important that all parent details are kept updated. Of particular importance in respect to this system, is the designated mobile number we use to send the text message to. With our system, one mobile number is messaged, and that will be the Parent/Carer 1 mobile number, as recorded on the student enrolment form (this is generally the mother’s number). If there is no Parent /Carer 1 mobile contact number provided, the system will default to the Parent/Carer 2 mobile number listed (generally the father’s mobile). If no mobile number is provided, no message will be sent. Parents must ensure their contact mobile numbers are accurate by checking via the parent portal on our website and making the adjustments on line. If a mobile number is used as the home number, parents should ensure that a mobile number is also included in the mobile contact field. Alternatively, parents can contact the school office on          9871 4222 and provide these updates over the phone.  The first listed mobile number will receive a text message if their child is marked absent. The text will read:‐ Carlingford HS records show <student name> is absent today. Please provide a note on their return. If incorrect please call the school on 9871 4222 You will note that you are only required to phone the school, if you believe the information sent via text is incorrect. Please note, text (SMS) replies will not be accepted. Parents are required to provide a note the following day as is current practice to explain the absence. We appreciate that there could be come teething problems with mobile numbers following the introduction of the system. Please do not hesitate to ring the school so we can sort out any issues which may arise.  

Parent Teacher meetings It was pleasing to see so many parents present at our Year 7, 11 and 12 parent teacher meetings last Wednesday evening. These are important opportunities for parents to gain feedback on the progress of their son or daughter and discuss any concerns in person with teachers. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you did not get to speak to a teacher or had any concerns which needed following up.  Wishing all students and families a productive and successful Term 2.  David Krust 

Our Mock Triallers 

Do these people look like winners? They certainly are! Our Mock Trial team trounced Cumberland High School in the latest round of this state wide challenge. Karen Zhang, Winnie Zhou, Nicholas Wilson, Jessie He, Julia Dabrowski and Jessica Wang worked as a team to convincingly win the case for the defence.'  As defenders in the case Jessica Wang Julia Dabrowsky and Nicholas Wilson provided shrewd advocacy. Jessie He and Karen Zhang were top scoring witnesses and Winnie Zhou covered her post as Magistrate Official dutifully.

Rostrum Voice of Youth Public speaking develops the self‐confidence, communication skills and expressive language qualities that are so vital in today’s world. To be able to speak well to an audience is a talent that is becoming increasingly important in our daily lives.  Rostrum Voice of Youth is one of Australia’s leading public speaking competitions for secondary schools. It offers students the opportunity to hone their public speaking skills in a high quality, competitive environment.  Carlingford  was represented by Kayla Belo and Jessica Wang of Year 11 in the senior division and Kristina Adzic, Nidhi Balasubramanya, Kayla Lawrence and Shehan Nanayakkara of Year 8 n the junior division of the competition held at Hornsby Girls High School in Term One.  

These students brought credit to our school with original, articulate and well prepared speeches which they delivered to an audience of peers, parents and adjudicators on the night. Junior contestants gave a prepared speech of six minutes on a topics including A Lost Cause and Living On the Edge. Our seniors tackled issues of society in eight minute speeches entitled A Narrow Escape and Seeking Approval with Kayla coming second in her heat.  Congratulations go to all these students for their willingness to undertake a challenging activity outside of school hours and their time and effort in preparing and learning their speeches to such a high standard. I hope that they continue to take an active interest in public speaking in the future. Maria Raynor 

Second Carlingford Student to Represent Australia Timothy Siu, a Year 12 student at Carlingford High, was  recently selected to represent Australia in the Oceania Junior Badminton Championships from the 20th – 26th February. He competed in Suva Fiji’s Yat Sen Hall playing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches. He follows Jin Lee (who represented Australia in Tae Kwon Do in 2010) as only the second Carlingford High School student to play for his country.  Tim competed against the nations involved in an under‐19 trial for selection in 2012. He played against New Caledonia, Fiji, New Zealand and Tahiti and reached the quarter finals in his doubles matches. This successful athlete, who is also the leader of the school string ensemble , wishes to play in the under 19 and senior level in the upcoming years. We wish him good luck and hope to see him wearing green and gold next year. Look out for Tim at school to congratulate him and then in the papers and maybe on TV.

Year 10 Field Trip to Calmsley Hill Farm Abbotsbury.  On  the 30th March, Year 10 and  fourteen members of staff went on an excursion  to Calmsley Hill Farm Field Studies Centre  in Abbotsbury as part of their studies of geographical  issues  in Australia,  in particular  the  topic “Land and Water Management.”

When  students  arrived  at  Calmsley  Hill  they  were informed  about  the  activities  that  they  would  be involved  in  during  the  day,  including  water  quality testing, measurement of abiotic factors within the   environment, studies of land degradation as well as the promotion  of  biodiversity  and  sustainable  land management practices. 

   Year 10 learned valuable field work skills of observation, measurement  and  recording  of  data  and  the communication  of  their  findings.  These  are  important skills, not only for Geography and earth sciences, but for many other educational and vocational fields. Students  enjoyed  being  outdoors  and  learning  in  a different  setting  to  the  classroom.  Most  students enjoyed the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty with some practical learning.  

            

   Many students reported  that  their highlight of  the day was working with  land care group  ‘Greening Australia,’ to  propagate  grasses  used  in  the  regeneration  of  the Cumberland Plain Woodland.  Students had the opportunity to experience typical farm life. They saw many farm animals as well as Australian reptiles and marsupials.
