Men’s Coats: Winter 2014 – Carl Ayers
Lately, Mother Nature has been putting us through the ringer. One day, it feels like a cool
September evening, and the next day it may feel like Christmas in Maine. At one point, more
than 50% of the U.S. was covered in snow, and parts of Alaska were warmer than parts of
Texas. It seems as though Mother Nature is a fan of HBO’s Game of Thrones, for she is
certainly telling us “winter is coming.”
To brace for the harsh winter predicted by The Old Farmer’s Almanac, one may want to
fortify his wardrobe with a full-length topcoat. Whether you opt for a coat that hits
squarely on your knees or a duster that comes down to the ankles, the intent is to cover as
much of your body as possible. Agi & Sam and Alexander McQueen both offer double-
breasted long coats that aren’t boxy and outdated, but rather classic yet modernly stylish.
Andrea Pompilio and CFDA-winner Public School have full-body selections that will keep
the urban dweller warm and protected without sacrificing his style or street cred.
For some, insulation is the key. Rather than bundling up in multiple layers, there are those
of us who prefer to dress minimally and have a puffy coat to buffer against the elements.

Givenchy has a black puffer with details inspired by the basketball court and John Galliano
has a thigh-length option that will add sleek style no matter what you wear underneath .
Vivienne Westwood has a black bubble coat that exaggerates a bit on size, but certainly
doesn’t skimp on warmth. And you cannot go wrong with a coat from Moncler Gamme Bleu,
a brand synonymous with arctic protection.
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice sartorial style to stay
warm. You can combat the weather and still look good while doing it. Bottega Veneta has a
double-breasted shawl-collared coat that is spot on for hitting the slopes or pounding the
pavement. Both Fendi and Juunj offer coats of mixed fabrics that evoke panache and luxury.
If you really want to stand out, select the leather and fur-lined coat from DGnak; with its
dramatic collar, winter won’t be the only thing making a big statement this season.
When it comes to fending off the elements, animals have us beat. For eons, man has sought
the assistance of animal skins and furs to protect us from the fiercest temperatures. This
winter will be no different. Boris Bidjan Saberi has a leather and fur coat with a high collar
that will warm you no matter what the mercury says. Gucci has a shearling coat

reminiscent of the 80’s, proving that it’s always in style to be warm and fashionable. A
horsehair coat from Ports1961 is perfect for the city dweller who have an affinity for
country living. Valentino offers us a fur and leather moto jacket that is equal parts bad ass
and luxurious.
When you step outside this winter, do so in style and confidence. With any of these options,
the unfriendly temperature is one less thing to worry about.
