Caring for Your Pearls | The Pearl Girls: Genuine Cultured Pearls

Caring for your Pearls Pearl can last for many years (just look at the royal collections in Europe and Asia!) however everyone must recognize basic principles about their care. Pearls are soft so they can be easily scratched; they are organic so they are susceptible to cracking if they are exposed to excessive dryness. Also, acids and chemicals can easily damage pearls. The best way to take care of your pearls is to prevent damage to them. So, store your pearls in a soft pouch so your other jewelry does not scratch them. Remove them before washing dishes or doing housework. When you get dressed, put them on last and when you get undressed take them off first. Never shower in them or apply perfume or hairspray with them on. Do not wear in swimming pools with chlorinated water. Our grandmothers used to say that wearing pearls makes them prettier… they must have meant that pearls make us prettier! Over time the oils in our skin can damage the surface of the pearls so you will want to clean them. One option is to simply wipe them with a soft cloth after you take them off. You may wash them in a mild soapy water and lay them flat to dry (if you hang them to dry the silk will stretch). Never clean them in an ultrasonic cleaner and do not use any chemical cleaners on your pearls. Over time you will also want to have your pearls reknotted since those knots are important in keeping the pearls from rubbing against one another causing further damage. With a little care and attention these pearls will be just as beautiful as the day you bought them (or they were given to you) and one day you will be able to pass them on to another person you love!

Caring for your Pearls

Pearl can last for many years (just look at the royal collections in Europe

and Asia!) however everyone must recognize basic principles about their

care. Pearls are soft so they can be easily scratched; they are organic so they

are susceptible to cracking if they are exposed to excessive dryness. Also,

acids and chemicals can easily damage pearls.

The best way to take care of your pearls is to prevent damage to them. So,

store your pearls in a soft pouch so your other jewelry does not scratch

them. Remove them before washing dishes or doing housework. When you

get dressed, put them on last and when you get undressed take them off

first. Never shower in them or apply perfume or hairspray with them on. Do

not wear in swimming pools with chlorinated water.

Our grandmothers used to say that wearing pearls makes them prettier…

they must have meant that pearls make us prettier! Over time the oils in

our skin can damage the surface of the pearls so you will want to clean

them. One option is to simply wipe them with a soft cloth after you take

them off. You may wash them in a mild soapy water and lay them flat to dry

(if you hang them to dry the silk will stretch). Never clean them in an

ultrasonic cleaner and do not use any chemical cleaners on your pearls.

Over time you will also want to have your pearls reknotted since those

knots are important in keeping the pearls from rubbing against one another

causing further damage.

With a little care and attention these pearls will be just as beautiful as the

day you bought them (or they were given to you) and one day you will be

able to pass them on to another person you love!
