Companionship, privacy, security and independence – you’ll find them all, and much more, in an Abbeyfield home.

The Abbeyfield Ferring Society has two houses both serving freshly prepared meals.

Cornwell House accommodates twenty residents in its residential home which is close to local shops and the sea.

Old School House provides supported accommodation for eleven residents in the heart of the village, adjacent to the library and Doctor’s surgery and close to the shops.

We aim to provide quality care in a warm, friendly environment. Respite care can be provided, subject to availability.

We also have a domiciliary support service for people who require some assistance to remain in their own homes.

We’ve all

heard the

buzzwords

put out by

the marketing

people after

our money –

their senior target audience

often described as ‘Silver

Surfers’, ‘Golden Pride’ or

‘The Grey Pound’.

It seems to me, rather than

refer to us as ‘wrinklies’ or some

such word that may prevent us

from spending our hard-earned

Baby Boomer cash, the gentler

words chosen refer to our hair –

especially us ladies.

I’d like to think of myself

now not in the ‘grey’ but in the

‘heavily highlighted’ sector.

Many of us take full

advantage of all the help

out there these days, so we

wax, prune, peel and consult

our hairdressers who skilfully

twiddle our pates in tin foils to

produce a (hopefully) subtle,

possibly younger effect.

When I’m too busy to spend

time thinking about being well

groomed I remember, as a child,

giggling about my Nanny’s

moustache – poor lady was only

about fifty but had succumbed

to the effects of the menopause

gracefully.

It wasn’t so bad for the

gentlemen. Granddad, bald as a

stone but for a few scant long

hairs wrapped over his head

(a crime of fashion nowadays

but remember this was the

1950s) was content to let me

sculpt the remaining locks into

a vertical point with Brylcreem

for my amusement.

Of course one person’s

pleasure is another’s poison

and now we all have a choice

– so if you ditch the peroxide

and grow your own highlights,

that’s fine too.

Otherwise if you do have a

Here’s a great offer to keep

your chimney safe

Wilkins Chimney Sweep of

Brighton and Worthing is

offering residents of Sussex

a special discounted price of

£45 – normally £52 – when they

book a chimney sweep between

January and July 2012.

After 116 years of sweeping

chimneys, Wilkins Chimney

Sweep Ltd, is well aware

of the concern felt by the

older generation over letting

strangers into their homes,

so they insist all their sweeps

are fully police checked to

ensure peace of mind for their

customers.

Says Franchise Director Louise

Harris, ‘We take customer safety

and security very seriously and

have taken this step to make

sure our customers know that

if they are using a Wilkins

Chimney Sweep they are not

Make it a clean sweeponly using someone who is

professionally trained and fully

insured, but also police checked,

so they can rest assured they are

in the very best of hands.’

Worthing based Wilkins

Chimney Sweep Mark Frost

sweeps chimneys and fits cages,

caps and cowls to properties

across the South Coast and says

one of the best parts of his

job is meeting members of the

public,

Says Mark, ‘A chimney sweep

is more than just a man who

puts brushes up chimneys. I

see my role as real community

service and thoroughly enjoy

doing jobs for the older

generation who always have

time for a cup of tea and a

chat.’

Dentures are not something you think about before you need them. So when the time comes – or even if you are caring for someone with a denture problem – you will have questions that need answering. Paul Cullen of The Denture Studio, a qualified and registered member of the General Dental Council, has the answers and is happy to put your mind at rest.

You may be wondering exactly what happens at your first consultation but there’s no need to be nervous. It’s all very relaxed over a soothing cuppa. You can then decide how to proceed.

You will be called back to try your new dentures, and if they are not comfortable or you are unhappy for any reason, that’s the time to say so. Paul will check that your bite is correct

Don’t chew over your denture fears

so that eating is still a pleasant experience. Your dentures will be ready in about three weeks from start to finish. If you need dentures in a hurry, this can be arranged with a one or two day turn around.

Many people hate having impressions taken at the dentist. Some even fear gagging at the crucial moment. Paul is quick to allay such fears, pointing out that he uses quick setting materials, and his technique means you can sit upright. Don’t be afraid to tell him, though, if this is a worry for you.

Finally, Paul will advise you on care and cleaning of your dentures and recommends buying a small nail brush for the task.

You can call Paul at Denture Studio on 01342 322171 to book a free consultation or for advice.

So who else can you call?We can ease the move from hospital to home, says Chris Moon-Willems of Relative Matters

For those who live alone

and have no family nearby,

leaving hospital can be a major

problem. Who will turn on the

heating? Who will arrange care

for you? Who will collect Felix

from the cattery?

Maybe you have a son close

by, but two days before you are

due to leave hospital he injures

his leg and can’t drive. Where

will you turn?

When Chris Moon-Willems

founded Relative Matters, she

intended filling the care gaps

that official sources can’t cover

for those who fund their own

care, but she soon noticed

that one of the main causes of

concern was the return home

after a stay in hospital.

Relative Matters can help you

with all your worries until you

are fully independent again.

Should you need support in

your own home or feel a short

stay in a care home would

enable you to build up your

strength and confidence, this

can be arranged. If you need

help with moving into a care or

nursing home on a permanent

basis, or professional services

– such as physiotherapy – or

assistance of any kind, Relative

Matters will link you up with

someone reliable. Chris has

years of experience with the

NHS and Social Services, and

there aren’t many situations she

hasn’t encountered, so why not

call for an initial chat. It could

save you a lot of worrying.

Sometimes you look out of the

window and long for spring.

Ask yourself if there’s someone

who’d love to take you out,

accompany you or organise a

minibus outing. The western

side of Sussex, with so many

pretty villages and towns

of historical interest, offers

numerous options for trips.

Here’s our selection. We’d love

to hear about your favourites

too.

Midhurst

Approaching the town from

Cowdray – famous for polo

and ill-fated ruins – you’re

greeted by the welcome sight

of a good car park. Follow the

High Street to Knockhundred

Row where the upstairs tea-

room offers cakes, snacks and

history. Once refreshed, explore

the backstreets around The

Spread Eagle and St. Ann’s Hill.

If you’ve read Anya Seton’s

Green Darkness you’ll imagine

the young girl running across

Cowdray’s grounds at night

to meet her lover at “Tan’s

Hill”. For a café at pavement

level with parking outside,

try Comestibles in Red Lion

Street. Route 1 buses run from

Worthing, if you don’t drive.

Escape routesWendy Greene explores West Sussex for perfect outings

Petworth

Dominated by Petworth House

and its stone walls, Petworth

is the perfect hunting ground

for lovers of antiques. Walking

up from the car park, you will

find the delightful town square

surrounded by unspoilt side

roads. Just outside the town,

on the Chiddingfold road

is The Stonemason’s Arms –

originally a row of cottages,

now an excellent watering hole

with great food and a restful

sheltered garden for fine days.

Once fed, you can drive on into

deep countryside.

Arundel

To explore Arundel comfortably,

you need to assess your mobility

then plan the day accordingly.

With a car you are better placed

to enjoy everything from the

Castle to the Wetlands and

the town itself. Buses arrive

from Worthing, Brighton and

Chichester, but the train station

is set apart from the town.

You will never be short of

somewhere to eat in Arundel,

with its fantastic selection of

restaurants, like The Tudor

Rose, cafés, take-aways and

bars to suit all pockets and

appetites. The town is on a hill,

so accessibility is inevitably a

problem to those of us happier

“on the flat”, but wheelchair

user and photographer, Pammy

Long, will tell you that she

visits the town most weeks,

and in particular the Wildfowl

and Wetlands Trust. Members

of WWT can visit free and are

given vouchers for friends.

It’s a perfect place to observe

different birds in each season,

from one of the hides or

indoors. Further down the road,

the excellent Black Rabbit Inn

nestles beside the river. Hardy

folk might enjoy a stroll by

Swanbourne Lake, just beyond

the Castle. This part of town

can be reached on foot or by

car only.

Ferring

A village of two halves sitting

on the River Rife between

Worthing and Angmering,

Ferring is remarkably well

stocked with specialist shops.

In South Ferring, there’s Tudor

Close – a lovely old building

with a restaurant and bar

while in the northern part of

the village, you can buy plants

and vegetables from Ferring

Country Centre, a workplace

for youngsters with disabilities

who have proved that they

are very able indeed in the

field of horticulture. Between

Ferring and Worthing you’ll find

Roundstone Farm Shop, sited in

a lovely old barn near Highdown

Hill – stocking a great selection

of foods and garden items –

with a Tea Room attached.

Findon

Just north of Worthing, this

little village, famous for its

sheep fair and racing stables,

straddles the A24. The Village

House Coaching Inn, one of

Findon’s three pubs, is ideal for

a meal, snack or warming drink

on a chilly day. It’s also a great

place for a party.

large expanses of sea and Downs that inspire her landscapes.

While working at Portslade Community College, she became

increasingly interested in art, began studying and was able to go

on to gain a Fine Art (Painting) degree at Northbrook College in

Worthing. Our cover scene near Ditchling is part of her current

focus in what she calls “an area of ancient histories, wildness

and human traces fashioned by agriculture”. Giclee prints of the

Doctors, Dentists and DeathBy Barrie Keech. Published in paperback by West Sussex County Council. Price £5

Who’ll take out my bad tooth? If you lived before 1879 the answer could well have been the hairdresser or the blacksmith – in fact anyone with tools fit for the task. Barrie Keech’s intriguingly titled book will certainly improve your view of the NHS. Packed with fascinating facts about the history of medical practices generally and locally, it documents the vast and rapid improvements over the past 150 years.

There are statistics showing many agricultural workers living to a ripe old age. In fact the term used for those between 75 and

85 years of age was “ripeness”. People between 55 and 75 were “mature” and the “reproductive age” was considered to be 25 to 35 – surprising when women often gave birth to over a dozen babies.

Illustrated with old photographs, advertisements and announcements, this little book makes a great coffee table read.

Janet Morrison, Independent

Age Chief Executive, says:

“We believe there’s lots of

information that older people

need but don’t always get.

That’s why we’ve put together

Wise Guide. This comprehensive

and concise guide draws on the

knowledge that the team at

Independent Age has gained

over years of advising older

people. We’ve tried to make

Wise Guide as user friendly as

possible because we believe

much of the information

available to older people today

is dense and difficult to read.”

There are tips on how to

bills, make your home safer and

easier to manage, join the online

community without getting

happy and lots more.

Wise Guide is also available in Kindleformat.

It’s always the same, as soon as Christmas is out of the way we’re bombarded with holiday adverts. If their tactics have worked, you’ll now be dreaming of a relaxing fortnight soaking up the sun. The bookworms amongst you won’t be thinking of which outfits to pack though. No, more importantly, you’ll be making a list of all the thumping good books you can indulge in while you laze beside the pool. But rather than load up a suitcase with tomes and blockbusters, why not pack a Kindle instead?

Created by the largest online bookseller, Amazon.com, Kindle is the answer to avoiding excess baggage charges. An electronic

reading device with the capacity to store up to 3,500 books, newspapers and magazines, depending on the model, Kindle means you’ll never find yourself without a book to read again. As thin as a magazine and lighter than a typical paperback, the Kindle screen simulates paper rather than a computer screen, which means you can read it even in bright sunlight with no glare.

Over 300,000 books, as well as many top newspapers, magazines, and even blogs are available to download, typically saving 60-70% on book store prices. Featuring 3G wireless technology, the Kindle uses mobile phone networks, so

Rekindling readingyou can download new books anytime and anywhere a mobile can be used. Other features include fast download time – just 60 seconds – no computer required, long battery life – so you can read for days without needing to recharge – and if you get a bit sleepy, plug in the headphones and your Kindle will read to you.

The only thing you won’t have with a Kindle is a lovely display of all the wonderful books you have ever read. On the upside though… less dusting.

How do I know if I need help with my hearing?

Hearing loss creeps up on us slowly. At first we may only struggle

in noisy places or with unfamiliar voices. Women’s and children’s

voices can be more of a challenge, being higher in pitch than

men’s. Shoreham Hearing Centre answer some of your questions.

Q. How easy are hearing

devices to use? Will I be

able to put them in and

work them?

A. Hearing devices are small

but our dispenser will

carefully discuss all options

to select the best model

and style. Most functions

are automatic, so you don’t

have to adjust them once in

place. We will take time and

care teaching you to insert

and work them.

Q. Are they comfortable?

A. Some are made especially

for your ears and no other.

You will have impressions

made if you have these

styles. Others just involve

a small tube sitting in the

ear canals – both are very

discreet and comfortable,

so you can almost forget

you’re wearing them.

Q. I have heard mixed reports

about hearing devices in the

past. What if I’m not happy

with my device?

A. We offer a no obligation

trial – usually a couple of

months, depending on the

model. On the rare occasion

you may feel devices do

not give you the results

you hoped for – and if with

a little perseverance we

cannot get them right –

we’ll offer a refund.

Remember, consultations can be

in our office in Shoreham or in

your own home if you prefer, or

if travelling is difficult for you.

Just let us know.

Shoreham Hearing Centre is at

285 Upper Shoreham Road

Shoreham-By-Sea

West Sussex

BN43 5QA

Q. What can I expect at my

first appointment?

A. Our dispenser will ask about

your hearing and related

medical history and shine

a light into your ear to

examine your ear drum and

ear canal. The test covers

a range of loudness and

pitch to discover the quietest

sound you can hear. If you do

have hearing loss, we discuss

all options and if a hearing

device is appropriate, we’ll

book appointments to fit it,

teach you to use and ensure

it’s set the best way possible

for you.

Many people find they need

dentures as they go through

life, and most of us have

probably met someone whose

false teeth don’t fit very well.

They may have difficulty

speaking or eating and their

whole appearance may be

affected with sagging facial

muscles that make them look

older.

The denture experts at

Changing Faces® Denture

Clinic believe there is a better

way. The look of a Changing

Faces® denture is influenced

by a patient’s age, personality

and gender, an innovative

approach offered by Changing

Faces® called Denture Genics™.

As well as restoring the smile,

Changing Faces® complete

dentures also offer a dual

effect by correcting the

proportions of the face adding

volume so denture wearers

achieve a more natural,

youthful look.

At Changing Faces®

Denture Clinic, individuals

deal direct with the Clinical

Dental Technician (CDT)

who makes their teeth. It’s

a new approach offering a

discreet, professional service

in a relaxed environment.

Sussex based Changing Faces®

Clinical Dental Technician,

Sandra Davey Snuggs, provides

complete dentures direct to

patients and other dental

devices via a treatment plan

from a Dentist.

During complimentary

consultations, Sandra begins

by discussing your personal

requirements, and explains

the different denture types,

so that you can make an

informed choice. Sandra is the

only Changing Faces® CDT in

Sussex.

Caring 4 Health15

Who you gonna call?Wendy Greene shows there are more than three emergency services ready to get you out of trouble

Everyone’s familiar with Police, Fire and Ambulance for emergency situations, but there are several less well known charitable organisations called out when things go wrong. Take a look at what they do and how you can help.

Sussex Air Ambulance

Air ambulances can deliver a medical crew to the scene of an accident or medical emergency and transport patients to the nearest major hospital or specialist unit, in a fraction of the time taken by a land ambulance. Yet they are a registered charity receiving no Government or National Lottery funding, but run their own lottery and rely on the generosity of companies and individuals. Throughout the year a number of events take place, particularly at Dunsfold, so take

a look at the website www.

sussexairambulance.co.uk

Recently Sussex Air Ambulance

were called to two adults injured

in a road crash near Steyning.

Response time was nine minutes

to the scene – where anaesthetic

was given – and the helicopter

took only twenty minutes to

reach Kings College Hospital.

By road it could have taken

anything up to two hours.

Says Jamie Cheshire,

“Volunteers are our lifeblood,

giving talks, representing the

charity at cheque presentations,

selling merchandise at

fundraising events and servicing

collection boxes. They can

also be drivers and couriers.”

Anyone who wants to become a

volunteer or fundraise should

call West Sussex County

Fundraiser Cheryl Johnson

on 07738 486633.

RNLI

When you spend time on the sea or around our beaches and estuaries, you can rely on our Lifeboat crews to launch in all weathers to get you out of trouble. They are all trained volunteers, so if we want to ensure their continued presence, you could become a member, give a donation, fund-raise or

put them in your Will. There

are six Lifeboat Stations in our

area, holding public events to

show the craft and equipment

needed. Worthing no longer

has a lifeboat, but its former

home can still be seen on Marine

Parade and its history is well

documented at the Library.

The RNLI want watersports to

be fun, and have a range of safety information see www.rnli.org.uk plus educational resources, free through the Shorething website.

Sussex Search & Rescue

SusSAR – the primary volunteer

resource used by Sussex Police

in the search and rescue of

vulnerable missing people – is

on call 24 hours a day, 365 days

a year. Fully approved by Sussex

Police, SusSAR is staffed by

volunteers, who cover the

whole of East and West Sussex,

but can be called out to assist

other Search and Rescue groups

throughout the UK. As a charity

they rely solely on donations

from businesses and individuals.

To help visit www.sussar.org

Switch to digital

You’ve probably seen plenty of

TV and newspaper ads telling

you about the digital switchover

early this year. But what exactly

is it – and how will it affect you?

When the traditional

analogue signal is switched

off in March 2012, it will be

replaced by the new way of

broadcasting TV, using a much

stronger digital signal. The

change will mean you’ll be

able to get more TV channels,

a better picture quality, an

on screen programme guide,

special services like subtitles and

all sorts of interactive features.

You’ll even be able to listen to

the radio through your TV.

Sounds good? In order to take

advantage of these new services,

you’ll need to make sure you

have the right equipment.

You can receive the digital

signal using an aerial, but you

may find you’ll need to have a

new one installed. This should

cost between £60 and £180.

If you don’t already have an

integrated digital television

now may be the time to treat

yourself to a new one. You

can still use your existing set

by having a digital set-top box

(cost around £25).

Check whether or not a new

aerial is necessary by visiting

www.freeview.co.uk.

The alternative to Freeview

(via aerial) is FREESAT (via dish)

with similar channels to

Freeview and is free.

If you wish to subscribe

Sky and Virgin offer a service

with a range of different

packages, depending on the

channels you want to watch.

Our pain-free guide to happy

viewing

Standard installation costs

£30, with a monthly charge

according to the package

you select. For more

information, call

08442 41 42 43 or

visit www.sky.com.

If cable has been installed

in your area, this is another

option. To check, contact Virgin

Media on 0800 052 2525 or visit

www.virginmedia.com. Cable is

only available by subscription,

and the cost will depend on the

package you choose. Installation

costs may be extra.

If you need to buy new

equipment, make sure it

displays the digital tick logo.

This means your equipment

will continue to work after the

switchover happens.

Now here’s the good

news. The BBC has set up the

Switchover Help Scheme for

those who may have difficulty

making the switch. You’re

eligible for this scheme if:

• youoryourpartneris75or

• you’velivedinacarehome

for six months or more

• you,yourpartneror

registered blind or partially

sighted

• youreceiveDisabilityLiving

You’ll be asked to pay just

£40 towards the help scheme,

but in some instances – if you

get Pension Credit, for example

– the help is free. To find out

more about the scheme, visit

www.helpscheme.co.uk.

If you are eligible for help,

Digital UK will send you details

in the post in plenty of time,

explaining how to apply. Once

you’ve registered, someone

from the scheme will visit you

at home, explain everything

clearly and simply, install what
