From the EditorAs the warm, late summer days dwindle into cosy

autumn nights I’m reminded of the days before

television was commonplace in every home and I

used to walk (no car of course) with my parents to

Grandma and Granddad’s house in Battersea for

our regular game of cards.

The stakes were hundreds of farthings kept in an

old Rowntree’s cocoa tin and shared out equally.

As a young girl there was this excited feeling that it was all a bit

subversive and certainly very competitive.

One crisp evening we dealt our hands and when Dad popped to

the loo Mum decided to put a ‘prial of threes’ in his set.

Enter Dad; I’ll never forget his face as he gazed at his cards in

undisguised amazement which melted into disappointment as one

at a time we tossed our cards upturned on the green baize card

table. ‘Only got a pair’. ‘Only Ace high’ ‘No good, not betting’.

‘Aw you rotten lot, look at this – I’ve got a prial of threes’.

I felt my first taste of acting as I feigned surprise, egged on by a

mischievous Mum.

This fun and lovely memory was evoked by stumbling across

those very farthings, still in their cocoa tin.

Whether your cosy evenings are spent enjoying your favourite

TV drama, reading a good book or catching the latest Book at

Bedtime on Radio Four, I wonder if anyone else longs for those

days we gathered together and made

our own entertainment.

Or maybe some of you still do?

There’s nothing old fashioned about good service

Life seems to become ever more

complicated, and the days of

talking through problems with

an actual human being are

fast disappearing. These days

you’ll either get through to a

call centre with endless options

(“Press 1 if you want to renew,

press 2 if you want to query a

bill…”) or find yourself using

the Internet. Wasn’t everything

so much easier before

technology got in the way?

Carpenter Box Accountants

understand this, and take a

different approach. We’re all

about good old fashioned face-

to-face service, and our Silver

Service is a great example. This

aims to help older folk manage

their financial affairs by taking

away the worry, so you can enjoy

the things you really want to

do. We’ll give you a dedicated

staff member who is friendly and

patient and always there to help.

We can help with banks,

household bills, tax returns and

anything else connected with

your finances. If you prefer, we

also make regular home visits

to help with tricky paperwork.

The service is tailored to meet

individual needs and is provided

for a low fixed monthly fee.

We’ll also make sure you’re

not paying too much for

utilities. Carpenter Box are

experts on income tax, capital

and will explain ways in which

you can make tax savings.

The Case of the Disappearing Data

We’ve already spoken

about two of the most

popular computer subjects

– genealogy and digital

photography, but have you

ever thought about the

length of time this data will

hang around? Our ancestors

carved symbols into stone and

they may have been on to

something, since their data

has lasted for millennia. I

doubt much of what we do

today will be around in fifty,

never mind a thousand years.

Printing digital photos is

cheap and easy, but unlike

the dangerous chemicals

used in the pioneering days

of photography, modern

printer inks are not designed

to last. Printer makers claim

ink stability of 20 years and

they may be right, but that’s

not going to be much good

for our descendents. And

the acids in cheap laser or

photocopy paper are likely

to fade the print within a

relatively short time.

So – what about storing

digital data? Remember 3.5”

floppies? Still have a drive to

read them? Thought not.

How much data on these is

now lost? Writable CDs and

DVDs are expected to remain

readable for only 10 years and

I have seen some CDs become

unreadable in less time than

that. Most of us have had

hard drives fail after only five

years constant use and how

long will they last if they’re

not used? Perhaps plug-in

memory cards or USB

drives offer the

best hope, as

they have no

Store it, don’t lose it, says Claire Love at LWS Creative

moving parts or internal

power source, but how long

will USB sockets remain on our

computers?

If we assume that we can

store a file – and access it – in

100 years, will the file itself

be readable? We’re on more

optimistic ground here. Jpeg

photos or PDF documents are

so common that someone,

somewhere, will be able to

read them, but less common

formats, or those specific to

particular applications, may be

more of a problem.

My advice is – keep up with

the times. As new storage

media and data formats

become available, copy all the

old data onto them. It would

be such a shame to lose it,

wouldn’t it?

Dear Dr Sarah…Q. I am a 42 yr old

woman, previously well,

but under a lot of stress

both at home and at work.

I have noticed increasing

hair loss with some actual

bald patches over the last

month or so. What can be

the cause and is there any

treatment?

Mrs C. Grant, Worthing

A. There are many causes of hair loss. These can be

infection, hormonal, dietary/nutritional deficiencies and

stress- which is probably hormone related.

I would suggest seeing your GP for some blood tests in

the first instance. You might also take the opportunity

to discuss the problems you are having with stress as this

may well be the cause, directly or indirectly. Lastly, most

episodes of alopecia like this are treatable and reversible.

Q. My elderly mother

recently suffered a stroke,

causing some speech problems

and a weakness down one side

of her body. She is on the way

to recovery. I am confused as to

why this happened, someone said

it was because she had a bleed

on her brain but her doctor told

me a clot had stopped the blood

supply. Who is right?

Mr M. Pearce, Littlehampton

A. I can’t obviously comment

on the precise cause of your

mother’s stroke. Very broadly, a

stroke really describes the result

of a problem rather than its

cause. To determine the cause of

the weakness/speech problems it

is usually necessary to have a CT

scan of the brain.

It is possible that a small artery

in the brain can leak, usually as a

result of an aneurysm –

an abnormal swelling – the

resulting blood can cause stroke-

like symptoms. More commonly,

these kinds of symptoms are

caused by clots blocking the

blood supply to parts of the

brain and starving it of oxygen.

A ‘heart attack’ in the brain,

if you like. These clots can be

from the heart, as a result

often of an irregular heartbeat

– Atrial Fibrillation – or bits of

fatty deposit lining the arteries

breaking off and blocking the

arteries. So, in summary, both of

your sources are right!

Q. Just recently I have been

suffering from what my husband

calls ‘funny turns’ where I go all

dizzy and either faint or just feel

faint. What could be the cause?

Mrs M. Kent, Worthing

A. ’Funny turns’ is a big

subject! They can be caused by

all sorts of things, some trivial,

some not. A urine or other

infection can easily cause you

to feel wobbly and unwell,

as can certain medications as

well as ear problems. They can

also be caused by problems

with the heart or nervous

system. I suggest you make

an appointment with your GP

without delay to start working

through the possible causes.

Remember too that you should

take extra care in potentially

hazardous situations if you are

prone to having a ‘turn’ without

warning. Take care up and down

stairs, crossing roads and it may

be prudent not to drive for the

time being.

Thehistoryofpantomimehasafewsurprisesupitssleeve,asGillMedwaydiscovers.Oh,yesshedoes!

It’s that time again! Time to

rustle your theatre programme

as you sit back to giggle at the

Dame in her stripy bloomers,

cheer (or ogle) the glamorous

thigh-slapping Principal Boy,

groan at those daft jokes, boo

the villain, and enjoy the slapstick

and ever-so-slightly naughty

innuendo. It’s all part of one of

the greatest of British theatrical

traditions – and for many of us,

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas

without a visit to the panto.

But how did this utterly zany

form of entertainment actually

come about? And why do we

love it so much?

The word pantomime derives

from ‘panto’ meaning ‘all’

and the ‘mime’ bit is obvious

enough. “All without speech”,

then? Hardly. But it made

more sense in Ancient Rome,

when pantomime consisted

of a single actor performing

a story without speaking,

using a series of masks to

represent all the characters

in the play. The ubiquitous

chorus explained the story

to the audience in rhyme

or song. To us, it all sounds

a bit yawn-making, and is

hardly recognisable as the jolly

Christmas entertainment we

know and love.

Pantomime’s journey became

convoluted and unclear for

a long time after the Roman

Empire bit the dust, so let’s

fast forward to 17th century

England. Between 1660 and

1843 only two theatres in

London were allowed to put

on plays with prose. In order

to survive, other theatres

resorted to alternative forms of

entertainment, incorporating

music and dance, circus,

and stories told in rhyming

couplets or mime. These proved

extremely popular – particularly

those staged by an 18th century

actor called John Rich.

Rich was an expert on the

harlequinade – a form of

dramatic entertainment which

had its roots in the Italian

Commedia del’Arte – and

this was perhaps the real

forerunner of our modern

panto. Performances in the

1750s enacted essentially the

same story, with little plot

variation. The handsome

hero, Harlequin runs away

with the beautiful Columbine,

who has been pledged by her

father to an old man called

Pantaloon – with romantic

and comic consequences. John

Rich developed the Harlequin

character to a high level and

received huge critical acclaim.

The next influential figure

in the world of pantomime

was probably Joe Grimaldi,

who made his stage debut as

a clown in 1800. His instant

success meant that the clown

became a leading character in

the harlequinade, and all kinds

of dodgy business with red hot

pokers and strings of sausages

were de rigueur. Grimaldi

himself, an indefatigable

performer, worked as a clown

right up until his death in 1837.

By the middle of the 19th

century, pantomime plots were

becoming more complex, and

the harlequinade itself began

to take a back seat. Stories

such as Cinderella, Aladdin

and Jack and the Beanstalk

were increasingly popular and

colourful shows known as

burlesques used dancing girls

and very extravagant sets to

woo their audiences. A famous

actress of the day, Lucy Vestris,

was already well known for

her performances dressed

as a man – a daring form of

entertainment which delighted

the Victorians – and in 1837 she

became the first ever Principal

Boy, as the hero Ralph in Puss

in Boots.

With the introduction of

good fairies, scheming villains,

magical transformation

scenes and the continuing

development of good old

fashioned slapstick, the modern

form of panto was well on its

way by the turn of the 20th

century. And in 1902 when an

actor called Dan Leno took the

part of Mother Goose, he set

the benchmark by which all

pantomime Dames are judged.

And what of the harlequinade?

It had all but died out by

1900, having survived in British

theatre for around 150 years.

Today’s Christmas

pantomimes, designed

for a family audience and

incorporating song, dance and

buffoonery, are almost always

based on well-known children’s

stories, and have their own

conventions and traditions,

too numerous to cover here.

They have a noble history, and

are part of what makes Britain

great. Long may they continue!

There’s Always Tomorrow

by Pam Weaver

Avon, price £6.99

Traumatised by his experiences

fighting in World War II, Reg is

to his cottage in Worthing –

but he isn’t the same man his

wife Dottie remembers. When

he receives a mysterious letter

through the post, Dottie has no

idea that this letter will change

her life forever.

Reg discovers he is the father

of a child born from a dalliance

during the war. The child has

been orphaned and sole care of

the young girl has now fallen

to him. Dottie struggles with

the idea of bringing up another

woman’s child, especially as she

and Reg are still childless.

And when eight-year-old Patsy

had expected. The young girl’s

arrival opens a can of worms

and it seems Reg has been very

Dottie get to the bottom of

things before Reg goes too far?

Growing to a Ripe Old Age

50 years in the garden

by Edward Enfield

Published in hardback by

Summersdale Books, price £9.99

ISBN: 978 1 84953 170 2

Edward Enfield has only ever

had one garden, but his dealings

with it have extended over

half a century. He came to

his three-quarters of an acre

knowing nothing about growing

anything, and this book is an

account of his horticultural

successes and failures, inventions

and frustrations.

With wry humour, he leads

you through the thorny subject

of roses, counts the blessings of

keeping chickens and exposes

the perfidy of gardening

copywriters – while offering wise

and witty tips on how best to

enjoy the fruits of one’s labour.

This is a blooming lovely

gardening memoir you’ll want

to root through time and time

again.

The Games – Britain’s Olympic

and Paralympic Journey to

London 2012

by Brendan Gallagher

Published in hardback by Wiley,

price £29.99

Here’s a rich and highly

illustrated exploration of Britain’s

remarkable Olympic heritage.

Britain has been a major

player in the Olympic Games

for over a hundred years. As

a founding nation in 1896, it

sits second only to the USA in

the ‘all time’ summer Olympic

medal league table. It also

provided inspiration for the

early Paralympic Games with

its pioneering work at Stoke

Mandeville, Britain’s national

stadium for wheelchair sport.

Written by leading sports

reporter and columnist Brendan

Gallagher, this book considers

London’s previous role as host

– rescuing the Games in 1908

when Vesuvius erupted and

Rome could no longer stage the

events, and then battling with

post-war austerity in 1948. It

charts the explosion in interest

in the Paralympic Games – now

established as integral to the

event – and highlights dramatic

stories of British medal winners

from both Games.

Happy Hundredth, Mrs Sparkles!Staff and residents at The Shelley are getting ready to celebrate a very special birthday

They call her Mrs Sparkles,

because of her glamorous look

and glittering jewellery. And

at 99 and a bit, Vera Barns still

has plenty of sparkle in her

own personality. She’s looking

forward to her hundredth

birthday on October 25, with a

congratulatory telegram from

Her Majesty and a fabulous

party with family and friends to

celebrate the occasion.

“Our chef, Peter is preparing

a gorgeous tea, and we’ll be

entertained by Mr Richard

“Shiny Shoes”, our handsome

crooner – by special request

from Vera,” says Marlene, The

Shelley’s owner. “It’s going to

be a wonderful afternoon.”

Vera herself is the best

advertisement ever for living to

a hundred. Petite and elegant,

her clear eyes and smooth skin

would be the envy of women

half her age. She still walks

well, and goes out regularly for

lunch with friends – but does

confess to enjoying a short

nap in the afternoons, just to

recharge her batteries.

Born in 1911 in Southend on

Sea, Vera has always loved the

seaside. She remembers the

town in those far off days, with

the sounds of horses and carts

and errand boys whistling.

“In the First World War, I

remember the German planes

coming up the river towards

London, but there was a big

garrison at Hornchurch and our

planes used to see them off,”

she recalls. “We were quite

safe, though. I remember being

carried out of bed in the middle

of the night and along to the

Fire Station. There was a big

cellar there and I remember

sheltering with all my dollies.”

Later, Vera moved to London,

and at 19 she married Cecil.

“He was a very kind man and

so easy to love,” she says. “We

were together for 60 years.”

Apprenticed to a hairdresser,

Vera learned her trade and ran

her own hairdressing business

for much of her working

life. Her smart appearance

has always been extremely

important to her.

“I’ve no patience with

people who are scruffy and

don’t bother to dress nicely,”

she explains. “I hate slopping

around all morning in a dressing

gown – I’ve never done it and

I’m not going to start now!”

Vera’s secret of longevity?

“It’s having a positive

attitude,” she says firmly.

“Don’t worry about anything,

put up with whatever happens

to you and just get on with the

job. There have been times in

my life when I’ve felt very low,

but I’ve told myself to shut up

and pushed myself to continue.

It’s always worked for me!”

Happy birthday, Vera. You’re

an example to us all.

Hate those gaps in your teeth

that ruin your smile? Struggling

to eat your favourite foods? If

this sounds like you – and you

wish it didn’t – it could be time

to consider having dentures

made. They can be a lot more

wearer-friendly than you’d

expect, and if you go for the

right design, you’ll also get the

correct fit.

When you first start wearing

your new dentures, they’ll

Super SmilesTop Tips for new denture wearers, from Paul Cullen at The Denture Studio

probably feel quite strange and

large in your mouth, but don’t

despair. Just persevere and

within a few days things should

settle down and you’ll feel

more comfortable.

Eating won’t feel quite the

same as before, either – and it

may take a few weeks before

you feel absolutely comfortable.

Again, perseverance is the name

of the game.

When it comes to cleaning

your new dentures, be very

careful about cleaning solutions

that use bleach. These can

seriously damage acrylic

material and are best avoided

– so choose your product

carefully. Read the instructions

carefully, too, as overnight

soaking is not usually necessary.

A five to ten minute soak will

be fine.

Star Tip: Scrub your dentures

with a nailbrush. You’ll get a

much better grip than with an

ordinary toothbrush.

New care home planned by Worthing Charity Guild Care

At the AGM in September, Guild Care were delighted to announce plans for a new purpose built care home for the community. The home – with 84 en suite rooms – will support Worthing’s increasing number of older people in need of residential dementia care through to highly specialised end-of-life nursing care.

As Chief Executive Suzanne Millard said, “This exciting new project, due to be built in our

80th year, is a very large financial commitment for any organisation but particularly for a charity that relies on the generosity of our local community.”

With 23% of Worthing’s population over 65 compared to a national average of 17% and an increasing number of people diagnosed with dementia, it’s vital to build care homes designed for the future.

Chairman Carol Roberts added, “The Trustees are

fully committed to providing this new home which will be designed as a community resource for Worthing and the local area. Our aim is to provide a high proportion of its beds set aside exclusively for state funded residents. The remaining private rooms will be offered at an affordable rate.”

Guild Care also plan to

incorporate into the home

in-house community space for

respite day care services for

dementia sufferers.

After a difficult year in

2009, Guild Care’s end of year

Financial Report showed a

continued improvement during

2010/11 with staff costs of £8

million accounting for 74%

of the charity’s expenditure

and demonstrating their

commitment to service delivery. We are delighted to hear

appeals for their Healthy Living Programme and Ashdown Centre reached target, but more

fundraising is always needed

to develop their wide range of

services, especially where other

funding has been withdrawn.

Guild Care provide care homes

with nursing, Healthy Living

Centre for older people and

carers, Home Care service,

sheltered accommodation,

respite services for dementia

and children/young people

with special needs, community

outreach and carers’ services,

charity shops and transport.
