  • 1. Education InMalawi By:CarilynPolanco &Iveliz Solivan

2. What is the literacy rate?In south Africa, the education is very low.For the quality of its science andmathematics, south Africa ranks 143rd.Last year, in their national and literacynumeracy test, 15% of 6th graders wentabove or are on the level of minimumproficiency on the language test they took. But in math it was much lower. It was on12% of the students. 3. Percentages In Malawi,Africa the wealthy have a higher percentage of childrenwho have graduated high school and college, than the poor. Thatpercentage is 92%. Believe it or not, there is actually people that areconsidered wealthy in Malawi. Maybe not wealthy how you think but,at least wealthy enough to cover the cost of their secondaryeducation. The percentage of the poor is 88%. The wealthy have ahigher percentage for everything, including the percentage of childrenwho have no education. Their percentage is 75% and the poor havethe percentage of 60%. Out of 12,000 eight grade students, only3,000 of them went to secondary school. There is more students outof school then in school, because in Africa the number of the "out ofschool children" continues to rise. Almost one in three males and onein two females is illiterate. Gender inequalities persist at all levels ofschooling. Female enrollments are about 80 percent of maleenrollments at the primary and secondary levels and less than 55percent at the tertiary level. 4. Quality of Education The quality of education is actually not so good. The schools in southAfrica suffer from poverty. Instead of a normal, proper toilet, half of theschools have to use pit latrines, which arent so comfortable. There is48 secondary schools, 33 of them have no electricity or running water.Less than 50%,to be exact 20% of the schools have libraries. Whichmeans that 80% dont get provided with the resources they need. Andonly 7.5% have books. Which means that 92.5% DONT HAVEBOOKS! Less than 10% have books!!! Can you believe what peopledo? They toss the books into rivers, that these children need to getsomewhere in life, only because they failed to deliver them. Its like ifthe villagers themselves are ruining their education. You know thepeople in the United States are more than lucky to have all theseresources, and we dont even realize it. But you never know if its true, cause you know what they say. ..Things arent always the way theyseem. You know the people in the United States are more than luckyto have all these resources, and we dont even realize it. 5. Is Education Readily Available to allChildren? There is only one phrase that answers that question, but it has a lot ofreasoning behind it. Is education readily available to all children?Absolutely not. According to my sources, teachers are not doing their job. Sothe teachers themselves dont even make an effort. So tell me, whats thepoint of being a teacher if your not gonna make an effort to teach? Manyteachers arrive late to school and then they leave EARLY! Thats not yourjob. Your job is to teach the students. In our opinion, that is veryirresponsible for teachers to arrive late and then leave early. Teachers inMalawi havent earned proper education themselves. Malawi needs money, and it needs food. And it needs a lot of resources. But what it lacks of themost is people who care. It lacks of teachers and adults that are willing tohelp. The teachers union only cares and are concerned with protecting itsmembers. Even the incompetent ones. Its sad to know that all thesechildren are in need of an education and want education and want to go toschool. When most of the kids here, dont even want to go to schoolbecause their tired. Were absolutely taking advantage of our incredibleresources and our wonderful education. Were taking advantage of ourchances to succeed in life. And were not using those advantages the rightway. 6. The Education of Females Its crazy how only 67% of girls dont go to secondaryschool because its unacceptable. Thats why only 25% ofthe wealthy mothers get to secondary school, or higher. And only 36% get primary education. But its sad to knowthat 42% dont have education. They might be wealthy intheir way, but the poor have more education then them.37% go to secondary school and sometimes even college.44% get secondary education, but sadly 49% dont haveeducation. Statics indicate that the average adult onlyreceives 4 years of schooling. So if you live in South Africaconsider yourself lucky to have more than 4 years ofeducation. 7.
