HespenthisfirstharvestatMuratiewineestateinStellenbosch,andhassincecompletedtwoharvestsinCaliforniaandoneinBordeauxwherehegarneredvaluablecuttingedgebestpracticeexperiencethathasstoodhimingoodscientificandcreativesteadtothisday.

Withhighambitions,RichardsignedupaswinemakeratFranschhoekVineyardsin2005,andhassincecompleted9vintagesatFranschhoekVineyards.HebecamepartoftheDGBfamilywhenthecooperationwasacquiredbyDGBin2008,andbecomeaprivateproducer.

BruceJackisaninterestingguy.There’sabitofapioneerspiritabouthim–he’spreparedtodothingsabitdifferently,ashisFlagstoneventureshows.He’salsooneofthosewineindustryfigureswhoisknownasan‘opinionformer’,becausehe’sbright,articulateandispreparedtospeakout.Itwasbackin1998thatBruceJack,now46,foundedFlagstoneasa“virtualwinery”withfacilitiesinitiallylocatedattheWaterfrontinCapeTown.Hewaslatertogiveupownership(althoughstayingonaswinemaker)inordertobecomeconsultantonmegaexportbrandKumala.

HehasworkedinBordeaux,SonomaCoast,Napa,McLarenVale,Barossa,LaRioja,TerraAlta,Jumilla,Rueda,SouthofFrance,andalloverSouthAfrica.HismostrecentventureismakingwinesonthefamilyfarmcalledTheDriftFarmnearNapierintheOverberg.

JohanReynekebeganhisforayintowine-makingin1998,onhisfamily’sfarmnotfarfromthelong-establishedtownofStellenbosch,nearCapeTown.Yearsbeforethis,thefarmhadbegunamovetoincreasebiodiversity,withtheplantingofindigenousvegetation,inparttoencouragethereturnoflocalwildlife.Cultivationofvineyardsalongorganic,thenbiodynamic,lineswasanaturalinclination.Theterroirheldtruetoitspromise.Theancientsoilsaresandyinnature,atopdecomposedgraniteandclay.Biodiversityonthefarmhasnowreachedalevelthatexceedseventhatfoundinthenaturalenvironment.Approachesassimpleasplantingclovertodivertthemealybugfromthevinesshowhowarouteawayfromherbicidesandpesticidesneednotbeascomplicatedassomewinegrowersimagine.The40-year-oldvinesofReynekeproducegrapesforwhatbecamein2004thefirstbiodynamicwineryinSouthAfrica.ItremainsoneoftheveryfewwineriesinthecountrytakingsuchanapproachandtheonlyonetoachieveaJohnPlatter5StarWineryrating.
